We had just seen the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel at the Fifth Ave. and we were actually looking for Annapurna.  Who knew it'd been gone a while.  I wanted to finally go and eat there (after many years of telling myself I'd go) and when we actually made a plan to, it was too late.  Gone.
So me and my 3 golden aged friends ended up at Indian Oven.  The server was very knowledgeable about the different dishes.  I liked that.  I also liked that they accomodated us since one in our group could not have spicy food (funny yes, I know), but she couldn't have the 'chili' part of the Indian regimen.  Unfortunately nothing they have is devoid of spice except the lassi, nan, and salad, so she didn't have a very exciting dinner.
We ordered a chicken karahi, eggplant something or other (smoked and mushed up), and fish tikka.  They were all yummy.  I was so surprised at how the eggplant tasted considering it didn't look terribly appetizing.  The smoky flavour really came through.
The naan was also excellent.  I've had a lot of naan in my lifetime (due to a slight carb addiction) and this was perfection- fresh, hot, and plain.
When one door closes, another one opens.

Undoubtedly one of the best Chicken Tandoori, Saag Gosht and Makhani Prawns I've ever had!  They managed to spice up their chicken tandoori and keep it moist; and that's hard to do because most chicken tandooris I've had in the past were dry and hard to chew :-S

I don't know if other customers have noticed but it seems that you get more portions when you order delivery because the containers are bigger and they fill them up :-D

Anywhere that offers more food is a friend of mine!

A review three years in the making.

I have been on a quest to find the ultimate comfort food and I believe I have found nirvana. Before you dismiss this as just another random, undeserved 5 star review, let me break down my reasons.

    - I have been coming here for over 3 years, long before I started yelping.
    - I have tried many of the menu items and they are yummy and consistently good.
    - The staff is amazing. They make the effort to remember your name and how you like your food without making it feel like a bad episode of 30 Rock or Seinfeld.
    - The takeout containers are huge, stay warm and seem to contain even more than when you eat in.
    - They have specials and deals on ALL the time, be sure to ask about them. Prime example is the butter chicken special. Butter chicken ($12.95) + Rice ($3.00) + Naan ($1.75) = $17.70 can be had for $15, a difference of 15%. Also, $1.99 pints, enough said.
    - This place is perfect for large groups. I've had two of my birthdays there and they can accommodate 20 people without splitting everyone up.
    - For those familiar with Indian food in Vancouver, you will love the naan, butter chicken and chai tea. The naan is made in a real clay oven and easily beats all other naan I've had in Vancouver. The butter chicken is the best I've ever tasted, my main criteria when searching for good Indian food. The sauce is delicious, the spices very alive and complex and the chicken itself tastes of BBQ smokiness and is to die for. (I ended a sentence with a preposition. Yikes!!)
    - The quantity AND quality you get is well above par for the price you pay. A takeout order of butter chicken +rice + naan feeds two for a blissful full-tummy dinner and leaves leftovers for lunch next day, all for $16.80 after tax.

I tend to ramble, but this place deserves every word. I'll finish with this. The Indian Oven is a rare combination of amazing comfort food you can eat while wearing sweat pants and watching reruns, a place you can bring large groups of friends, an outstanding deal for the quality and quantity you get and it is staffed by wonderful people that make you feel like you're their favourite customer.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm getting a little hungry.

Great indian food!  There butter chicken is great (but really, who's had bad butter chicken?) but it was their Vegetable Korma that really stood out.  Would absolutely order again, but won't need nearly as much Naan next time.  We ordered 1 per person, but they came the size of a medium pizza so it's easy for 2 people to share.  Would have given them 5 stars but when we ordered for a 2nd time it wasn't as mind blowing.  Fast delievery in kits is great to.

A great delivery/take out option for Indian food in Kitsilano. Delivery is fast, and the food is very consistently good. This isn't Vij -- it's just your straight-up, basic, yummy Indian food.

If you like your Indian food spicy, be sure to ask for it, because they default to not spicy (at least for us).

    Our usual order:
Butter chicken (as promised on their menu, it really is the BEST in the city)
    Prawn vindaloo
    Saag paneer
Mixed vegetables (sounds boring, actually really good)
Naan (plain, and also the spinach -- very yum)
    Pulao rice

Sadly, haven't been able to get the kids to eat anything other than the naan and rice, even though we've tried pakoras and tandoori -- both just a bit too spicy for our kids' palates.

Last Sunday I came here with friends to pick up our food order to go. That's when we realized that they have a patio! After thoroughly enjoying our take out on our own patio at home we knew we had to go back soon because 1. the butter chicken was amazing, and 2. we wanted to test out that little oasis above 4th ave.

We went there last night with a large group for our weekly Patio Thursday get together and we were not disappointed. Our server was amazing. She kept the food and extremely well valued pitchers of beer ($10!!!) flowing all evening.

For appies we started with the Indian Fries and the Indian Quessidia. The fries definitely stood out as the winner. Our first wave of food consisted of Butter Chicken x 2 and the Eggplant dish + enough garlic naan and rice for everyone. We stuffed our faces and then quickly ordered round #2 - no time to rest and get full, we had more dishes to try!

For the second wave we ordered the Bhindi, Madrasi Chicken and another yummy veggie dish which the name is escaping me at this moment. Again, all of it was yummy, with the chicken winning this round.

All-in-all, this was a great spot. We left full, happy and tipsy all for $35 including tip. The perfect Patio Thursday!

Awful service. The lead waitress was discourteous and abrasive. The food was better, but not bursting with flavor which was disappointing. Unfortunately

Got some takeout to eat at home.  It was ready pretty fast so that's a plus.

Pakoras and dipping sauce are delicious! You must get these.  You will be hooked!

Got the eggplant which was freaking delicious.  Couldn't stop enjoying that with the naan bread. Dal Amritsari was good, but waaaay too salty.  Really salted us out.  Will have to check next time.  Love lentils but it was over seasoned.

    --------

Went back for dinner on the patio. Surprised to be served by a waitress who was not Indian, ok that's new.

She was very helpful and friendly though, but we were quite early for dinner so that's part of it.

We ordered pretty much everything that could be vegan on the menu.

Pakoras - still delicious, MUST have more of these.

Eggplant - everyone devoured it as usual.

Pindi Chana - not as tasty as it could be. Won't get this again

Aloo Gobhi - not bad, not amazing

Mixed vegetables - exactly how it sounds... mixed and nothing special

    Chapati bread.

So overall we had a good night and it wasn't too bad of a price.  I know Indian food isn't great for being amazing and vegan all the time, so we had low expectations.

We asked the waitress about the Dal Amritsari as we ordered it before and it tasted like the salt shaker had been dropped in the pot. She laughed and said she didn't think it was usually salty, but then there's two chefs in the kitchen and sometimes they start adding salt to things without tasting it.  We could order it and just send it back if it was bad...

Strange answer, not sure I wanted to risk being salted out again and disappointed.

If they could get that one dish down, I think my husband and I at least would be back, then we could just get pakoras, eggplant, dal and chapati and be happy.

Maybe in the future, but I think I'll wait a bit right now.

Is there a AA for butter chicken?

If so, here is my first realization in my 12 steps to recovery

I've admitted I am powerless butter chicken--life has become unmanageable.  It will be 9:13 am and I'll be sitting in my office sipping on my morning coffee when the craving comes.  Its all I can think about, butter chicken, surrounded by fresh baked naan bread, eating it with my hands, making a sloppy mess.  Its getting in the way of me concentrating and it might even affect my career. Its all I want, I have a problem.  But at least I am admitting it.

The butter chicken here is bomb,  I'm sure there are more authentic choices, but I can't order anything else.  The portion will last me 2 dinners (in fact, I have left overs from last night in the fridge!!).  The veg pakoras are also super good, crispy on the outside and soft and delicous on the inside.  Be sure to get some mango chuntey for dipping.  The naan could use some improvement... it is a little chewy and can come burned sometimes (this is why I rate Indian oven a 4, not 5), I feel it could be fluffier, but by no means does this hamper the experience.

To me, after a boring day sitting in front of the computer at my lame job, there is nothing better than coming home and chowing down on some sloppy Indian Oven grub, with my hands of course... oh yeah!

This was our first meal in Vancity and what a awesome meal it was! It was a comforting  meal after quite a long, rainy drive up from Seattle. We walked in at 6pm and were seated immediately. I was a bit worried since there was only one other table in the whole place, but then again, it was only a Tuesday night and pretty early for dinner.

    We ordered:

~ Butter chicken - I still don't quite understand the difference between Butter Chicken and Chicken Tikka Masala, but this dish was fantastic! Creamy, full of flavor. Great for naan dipping!
~ Prawn madrasi - We both really enjoyed this dish, which was not creamy at all, but chocked full of flavor, with a little bit of spiciness.
~ Chef Special Chicken - This dish was agreeably our favorite. We were a bit bummed at the level of spiciness since it wasn't spicy at all and the menu said "the spicier the better!" But it was still awesome. Similar to Butter Chicken, but with slightly different spices. Very, VERY good!

We ordered one regular naan and one garlic naan. Both were tasty and plenty for two people. No rice this time.

I know Vij's is more popular, but Indian Oven is very good and deserves all 5 stars. The service was also great, though I was bit thrown off in the beginning since our waitress was white/non-Indian, but her recommendations were perfect and she was very sweet and attentive.

The food, prices, and service are excellent. The decor could use some help, but that's the only aspect that would reduce my rating. I've been here twice so far, and both times I stuffed myself.

I highly recommend the veggie pakoras & butter chicken. The butter chicken is light, smooth, and very flavorful.  They have good deals on beers, and the staff was extremely friendly.

    Great for take-out!

NOT so great for dining in (outdated, ugly decor...and smaller portions than takeout).

That pretty much sums this place up in a nutshell.  We order delivery regularly from the Indian Oven. It has become our go-to place for Indian cuisine.  The price is right at around $11 per entree with good portions and they have a really awesome selection of vegetarian dishes, which is what we usually order.  Butter chicken fans will not be disappointed.  Naan is REAL naan, not like some places that serve you pita bread.  Delicious.

Negatives are that some of the food can sometimes be too much on the salty side. Once I ordered the pindi chana and it was almost inedible it was sooo salty.  But, this doesn't happen all the time, which is why we keep ordering from there.

We have tried quite a few different Indian places in the Kitsilano area and so far, this is our favourite for value and taste.

Location... Location... Location. Great window seating with an outdoor patio on the 2nd floor on the main 4th street drag in Kits.

Service is spot on. The staff is attentive with refills and makes sure everything is made to your specification (ie making sure all the dishes didn't have peas for me).

The butter chicken and eggplant were good but the star of our meal was the piping hot garlic naan which was perfectly crispy and soft at the same time if that's at all possible.

I would definitely come back if I'm in the area but I wouldn't go out of my way to come back since parking is a bit scarce.

When I lived in Calgary, we used to frequent an Indian restaurant called Kashmir on a weekly basis. They grew to know us by order, then by name, and were the last meal we ate in Calgary in the night before we moved to Vancouver (which they gave to us free as a thank you for all the business and referrals).

    So, what's my point?

Last night I had food from Indian Oven for the first time, and in the 6 years I've been in BC, it's the closest I've ever found to the sheer awesome fed to me via Kashmir. The sauce on the butter chicken was near divinity; it was so good - it's been a very long time since I've had Indian food of that quality, and I can't WAIT to go back and have more.

    It was really, really good.

    Now I'm hungry.

We were feeling lazy and thought we'd look for a delivery place. Found Indian Oven, called them up, we were still close enough to deliver to in the West End. The food was here in 25 minutes, hot, fast, and tasty. For two ppl, we got 2 dishes, 2 appies and 2 orders of rice for about $40 odd. It's not the cheapest choice, but the servings are large enough, and we have leftovers enough for another full meal. Would definitely order from here again!

Rogan Josh, Butter Chicken and Eggplant - well, hello new lovers! I've been getting to know you well Once last night for dinner and then today for lunch! And I've got to say, you've swept me off my feet.

Because you've got it going on with:
-Dishes that stayed hot, hot, hot all the way to Burnaby (that's right, I had a dinner date who wanted the "best butter chicken")
    -Full of flavour spices
    -Heaping portions
-Chewy, tasty, fluffy rice and soft thin naan
    -and all under $50!

Indian Oven - you just knocked sushi off of my take out rotation (at least for now!)

Had to try Indian Oven for lunch today to compare the Butter Chicken, and it was definitely good.  Tasty for sure, but not the best I've ever had in town.

Service is excellent and the restaurant is roomy and spacious.  Get a window seat if you can...the view is nice.

Just went for dinner with a group of friends.  Tasty food, good service and decent decor.  Standard Indian fare.  I enjoyed the dinner, but did not feel that it was a rockin' deal nor was I wowed by the food, even though I had the day's special.  Pretty good for Kits though, so you don't have to drive all the way to Surrey for decent affordable Indian food.

Might go again, though not necessarily my first choice for East Indian food.

    Ok!
So it must be obvious by my reviews so far that I'm addicted to curry!!
I have a mother that cooks the best  in the world, so my opinion is biased, but I try to keep an open mind, anyway, I digress....!

The reviewers photos of The Indian Oven's food, swayed me into opting for them.

Was a good and a bad decision....
I ordered a delivery, (lazy Sunday syndrome), and it took the 45 mins they promised to get to me, however I couldn't pay by debit, and had to go out to the bank to get cash, which kind of negated the whole point of getting a takeaway.

It seemed kind of expensive at $40, but then to be fair, that was because I'd ordered enough food for two people......for two days!!
The portions were very healthy sizes, so value for money was actually pretty good!

I'd ordered a potato curry and asked for it to be spicy, but unfortunately it was very tame. However, it wasn't swimming in oil like a lot of takeaway curries, which I appreciated.

The Dall unfortunately only came as a main, and not a side; which was a shame in two ways: one, because it cost $10 or so, and two, because I think the top must've fallen off the salt cellar when they were making it!!
It was dangerously close to being inedible.

This was unfortunately the case with the vegetable pakora I'd ordered as well. Though they weren't quite as bad, and they did taste very good apart from that.

The potato nan was pretty good, (I told you I ordered a lot)!! Not as fluffy as I'd have liked, but it had lost the fight for space in the delivery bag, so was to be expected!

The Indian chips, (fries in North American), were not as exotic as the menu had led me to believe, but there were tons of them, and they were the closest to proper chips I've had since the last time I was at home!! Yummm!!!

    How to summarise???

Service, (apart from the debit card debacle), was good.

Value for money was good, (It did last two days)!!

The food.......well the saltiest thing I've ever eaten was a veggie Shepherds Pie I once attempted to cook for my then girlfriend, using an entire box of gravy powder!!! (Her being my "ex" now has nothing to do with my culinary capability I hasten to add)!!!
Not even I could get through that!!! And I used to eat salt from sachets with a wet toothpick when I was a child!!! (Don't go judging me! There's plenty worse I could have been stuffing down my gob)!!!!

Well, this wasn't quite as bad as that, (and would have been even better if I hadn't been eating it for two days), but was a tad dissapointing!

Suffice to say I would give them another go!!

Just next time I'll request it only to be seasoned with chilli, order half of what my hungover eyes want, and make sure I haven't spent my last $20 on a taxi the night before!!!

I had been to this place quite a few years ago, but I didn't bother writing a review because I didn't know how valid it would be still.

Today I learned that they are very consistent. The quality is still the same as it was in 2003 how I remember it!

I placed an order to go of butter chicken and bhindi with naan and rice.  Everything was really delicious. The butter chicken had just the right amount of spice in it. Same with the bhindi (but I have to admit, my mom does make it better).  The naan wasn't the best I had but it was okay. And rice was okay too.

On top of that, the girl who took my order was very kind to offer me water and refill it as I waited for my order.  They also included disposable plates and cutlery when I asked.  No one seemed to frown at all at my requests.

Plus, they give 5% off of pick up orders ( which isn't much, actually). But my bill came out to be $30 and I have left overs.

I'm very happy that this place is still awesome after 6 years. It will come in handy when I move to the area. Oh, and did I mention they deliver on orders over $25?  And they have an awesome patio you can sit at and people watch on the sidewalks of W 4th Ave. ANDDDD (finally), they have awesome drink specials. Today I saw a pitcher of shaftebury cream ale for $10 and martinis for $5

    Two words. Butter Chicken.

It would be unjust to try the restaurant and skip the butter chicken. They self proclaimed it as the best, and the one eyebrow raise becomes two for it's eye popping goodness. Perfect balance of sweet and spicy, tender chicken succulent till the last bite. Same goes for the panang paneer, amazing texture and plentiful amount of cheese, no scrimping on ingredients here. I like that the naan was a tad flaky and served warm straight from their tandoori oven. Indian Fries were too thick and dense for my liking, but well, why order fries in an Indian restaurant anyway? The roti, I find overpriced for two measly servings of what seemed to be copycat of their naan, flavour and texture-wise.

Wait staff were great, and always seem happy to assist. The ambience clean and inviting with a patio great for two people. A few parking spots at the back available for diners when 4th Ave. gets packed on weekends. This place definitely delivers! (both figuratively, and literally)

    Dear Diary,

I discovered that India grill no longer delivers and that they have closed their location on fourth.. sigh. I have had a long affair with that place and I cant believe they just left me like that?? don't they know who I am?  what we shared together.... the memories?
So in my darkest hour like a shinning light above my head was the Indian Oven.. woohooo my salvation! I was reborn!  alive with the fact I could have indian again in my hood!  I think I am going to take it slow this time, I don't want to rush into anything because I am still hurt by my past so I ordered the butter chicken,  pakooras, and some naan.  That should do for now.  It was ok, with every mouth full all I could do is think of them... India grill....  Will I ever feel again what I felt before?  Is the Indian Oven my rebound indian?  so many questions.

    Wow. Yep. Wow.

Great location? Check. Super fantastic service? Check. Decent prices? Check. Crazy delicious food? Double check!

I'd heard from more than one person recently that this was THE place to go for great Indian food (best butter chicken around, so I was told). They weren't lying!

Some friends and I were in the neighbourhood and decided that this would be the perfect way to end our fun-filled Saturday. Right away the boys were happy cause the board outside the restaurant was very clearly stating their excellent beer specials. And it only got better!

We went after most dinner rushes so had absolutely no trouble getting a table. The service we received was excellent - friendly, prompt, didn't hover but didn't stay away for super long stretches, water glasses never went empty and answered all our questions for recommendations and whatnot pleasantly.

And the food? To die for. Around the table we had veggie pakoras (excellent, not too greasy, lots of them and the chutneys were great), butter chicken (oh nomnomnom), chicken tikka masala (many many yummy noises were made), rogan josh (this is the boyfriend's standard when we have Indian food and he declared it the best he'd ever had), palak paneer (excellent flavour and the paneer pieces were a good size), garlic naan (large but not heavy - half of one was enough for dinner and the other half I'll be eating today with my leftovers) and mango lassis (extremely refreshing, not TOO heavy or sweet and I appreciated that they had ice cubes floating around in them and not just all crushed).

I've been craving really good Indian food for quite some time now, and this fit the bill perfectly. Next time I want to give takeout a go seeing as the word is that you get even more and it's just as good if not better.

Hmm, it's only 10:30 am but can I have my lunch now?

$5 martinis and a table full of delectable Indian treats sure make the wait for the Celebration of Lights fireworks a lot more enjoyable.

Everything we ordered was pretty on par. I was a little disappointed in the Indian Fries though, they were a little bland and soft, and everything we ordered EXTRA spicy but was still about a 3 or 4 on a 10 hotness scale. Still mighty tasty though!

I would rate this a solid 3 1/2 stars, however there isn't an option to do that, so I'll be generous and give it a 4 because our waitress was so darn cute and friendly and the dinner was still good although lacking in serious spice.  Plus the patio was pretty chill.

mmmmmmm Alu Gobi...my mouth is watering just thinking about having some...I am a HUGE fan of India food..I like to think I can tell the difference between amazing and sub-par(ever had Indian in Calgary..bleck....butter chicken made with Campbell's Tomato soup..no lie..) and while I wouldn't say India Oven is the best I have ever eaten...they do a pretty good job at a decent cost.

I have never actually eaten in so I can't comment on the wait staff or the setting of your dinning experience..but the food..that I can talk about! I usually get some very sweet girl on the phone when I order..very pleasant...the food is delivered..which seems to be rare these days..and usually only take 30-45min..

Now..the food...order the following and NEVER be disappointed..

    1. Butter Chicken
    2. Lamb Rogen Josh
    3. Alu Gobi
    4. Chicken Korma
    5. Veggie Parkora
    6.Rice - duh
    7.Naan Bread - also duh

All this for around $60 and it will feed about 5-6 people and maybe even leave you with some left overs for lunch!

OMG..sooo hungry now..I think I may have to have some India Oven for supper tonight! Maybe I'll live on the edge and eat in!

Craving for some butter chicken, and we had a bottle of riesling waiting for us in the fridge, so we decided to order in. Called at around 8pm; food arrived at 8:40pm. Not too bad, considering it was a Saturday night. We were just within th 5km delivery radius too!

We got 2 orders of the butter chicken and rice, and a side of the paritha. These were large portions! We could have shared one order of the butter and the rice. Next time, next time we'll know.At least we had leftovers for the next day.

Lots of pieces of chicken, the butter chicken sauce was just the right consistency of sweet and spicy, maybe a little spicier than it is normally. Rice was plain, which worked well with the sauce. The paritha was a bit small, and it's not as good as when it is fresh. Nevertheless, it was still good.

The wine went well with all this butter chicken goodness too! I would order from this place again!

Surprisingly good Indian food.  Why surprisingly? Because since moving here six years ago, I have tried a few Indian restaurants on 4th and they were absolutely horrible. This was a while ago and these places no longer exist. There used to be a bunch just west of Burrard. Indian Oven seems to be the only one left, but I just had never got over those other bad places.

I had read some good things and the pictures of the food looked pretty good, so off I went. Got take away to eat on the beach. (I do love eating on the beach!)

I am happy to report that this food was really good. Got the veg pakoras to start. They were very good and would have been better if they were fresh served in the restaurant. Fried food in a bag for even a few minutes is not good, but these were still tasty, just a bit soggy. Main thing is that it was a huge portion. Between two of us, we ate about half of them.

Had chicken tikka masala which is a favourite. Actually the most popular dish of any kind in the UK. Even more than fish and chips, and yet not always available here. This was very good and again, a really nice size portion. Lots of onions and the chicken was tender.
The Palaak Paneer was very good. The spinach tasted fresh and the spices were excellent. The cheese was really nice. Huge portion!
Had a garlic naan which was fabulous. Huge and full of flavour and a really nice stretchy, doughy consistency.

Rice was gently spiced and with peas. Very good.

Over all, we had about half of the order left over and I am a big eater, so that's amazing. I am excited to try this place again. It's a great find, but it's been nearby for so long. They could do with sprucing up the restaurant. If this place looked more like Banana Leaf, I would eat here all the time.

    3.5 stars!

Watching the hockey game at my friend's place, he suggested we pick up butter chicken from this place. Looking at past reviews I guess these guys are known for their butter chicken.

It was definitely delicious, cost was $16 for butter chicken and rice and naan.

Not surprisingly during a Canucks playoff game the place was pretty empty.  I'm always a little wary when a restaurant makes my food in less than 10 minutes (always makes me think that they're heating up leftovers in the back).  That being said it really was delicious and I was back in front of the tv eating my delicious meal by they end of intermission.

My friend pointed out the beer prices, $4 a pint, not bad!

I ordered a ton of dishes from here when I was PA-ing (production-assistant) for a movie set, so we ordered EVERYTHING from tikka masalas to butter chicken to other stuff.

It was superb. Although what was disturbing was that I went in on a weeknight at about 7pm? And the place was DEAD empty. Recession at its finest! :(

Loved the naan, the rice. Oh, they did not cheap out on the rice. It was more food than necessary. Wish they told us that "one order" of rice was going to be so humongous. But other than that, loved it. It was a bit on the pricier side, but well worth it.

I am not sure why good Indian delivery is so hard to find in Vancouver, but most that I try have been schlocky and flavourless.

Indian Oven, in my opinion, is the best of the bunch that I have tried - but before you get your masala-lovin' tastebuds all excited, keep in mind that that is not saying much. In their favour, their delivery is fast and affordable, and the food is often pretty good.

I have really enjoyed their pindi chana, paneer butter masala and aloo muttar on various occasions, but last night we were pretty disappointed. The aloo gobi had a strange almost Chinese-food flavour, and the palak paneer was boring and lacked spice and garlic. The naan was also undercooked and as a result too chewy and soft.

I will forgive them this one-time slip up and order from them again, but I will do so with lowered expectations and a clove of garlic on hand.

(A hint - if you want it spicy, you have to really, really stress that you can handle it for them to take you seriously! I think we have finally convinced them....)

A bunch of us ventured here last month with a large group for a birthday. I had never been to this place to it was taking a chance and hoping the food was good.

We were seated as soon as we arrived and the friendly waitress took our drink orders right away while we waited for others to arrive. As the group started to arrive, the waitress continued back and forth taking drink orders as people were quickly arriving. As soon as everyone arrived and we had decided to split the table in two and order a bunch of food to share for each side. I must admit I was confused several times as to what was ordered but our waitress luckily was on the ball.

Well, all of the food was absolutely perfect. We mostly ordered everything hot and it actually was which is hard to get at other places. Everyone kept saying how great the food was (and I know at least 1 other person wrote a review on another site about it).

Definitely check this place out, the food and service is great!

I originally wrote this review about India Grill, and it has taken me a couple of weeks to discover that I wrote about the wrong restaurant. Oy, I must be getting old...that said, here is my review of Indian Oven:

The butter chicken is smooth as velvet and the vegetable korma is creamy, delicious heaven in a bowl. I also recommend the spinach naan, the lamb or chicken saag (that's with a spinach sauce), and the veggie or chicken pakoras. All very very tasty.

Consistently great food and the service is always good too. And they have a patio.

Went here last night for a little prefirework finale fair.

I love that the place isn't street level and offers a great views from the patio. Im all for a little people watching while I'm chowing but its nice to just relax and down a few $5 martinis (Special).

The staff was great. Although I had wished that we got the waitress from Ireland. Theres something about an irish girl taking your order at an Indian restaurant that embodies the variety of Vancouver.

Food was three star fair with a good selection of authentic dishes. We tried the Indian fries, Gobi Pakora and Curry chicken with Pulao Rice.
Unfortunately I was supposed to order the Butter chicken as its amazing.

I guess there will have to be a next time which doesn't bother me a bit.

Right around the corner from my apartment is Indian Oven, which I think is one of the best places to go for Indian food on the west side of Vancouver. It's located on the second floor of a building at the corner of West 4th Avenue and Maple Street - you have to climb a flight of stairs to reach the restaurant.

The patio's a great place to sit when the weather's warm and mild -- it offers a great view of the hustle and bustle on 4th, as well as of the mountains and the downtown skyline.

The quality of the food at the restaurant is quite impressive. I ordered mainly vegetarian dishes, but the menu includes a wide selection of both vegetarian and non-veggie items to choose from.

Indian Oven also offers free delivery within a 5-km radius, and 10% off for pick-up orders.

First time out for Indian food in Vancouver, all my previous experiences have been in England.  This did not compare well, although it was certainly edible.

We ordered butter chicken, lamb korma, plain naan, and plain rice.  The naan was excellent, but the chicken and lamb lacked the distinct and intense flavours I've come to expect. Also, the menu didn't specify how spicy the dishes were, nor were we asked by the server how hot we'd like the food.  This only added to the bland taste. The food was good, but wasn't what I'd hoped for.

Service was fairly lackluster, and the staff's manner was borderline brazen in tone. They turned away a very disappointed group of four an hour before advertised closing time. Granted by that point we were the only two left in the restaurant.

No music and uninspired bright lighting gave the place a very stark feel.

I wouldn't refuse an invitation to eat there again, but I'd prefer to find some better options.

I'm actually ashamed to say I've never been IN to the Indian Oven, although I've ordered food from them countless times.

Food is fantastic - it's always delicious when delivered and the portions are more than adequate.  They sometimes can be a little funny about taking credit cards for delivery, although I've never had them outright refuse.  Delivery staff are always pleasant.
