Hit or miss, absolutely, but I don't get the lack-luster reviews for this place! Perhaps I'm forgiving since it is definitely one of the only places to get dosa and South Indian food in Victoria, and sometimes a girl needs a dosa. I like that when i order my dosa "very" spicy, it's actually reasonably spicy. The fenugreek dosa available only occasionally is magnificent. The sambal is never that great, but the coconut chutney is decent.

I don't think I'd ever venture to deviate from the dosa/uttapam page of the menu, with the exception of garlic naan, which the kitchen were more than happy to prepare without butter for me, and it was delicious. I've never been there for the buffet, but it seems a good deal, and I was told it's relatively vegan-friendly.

I really wanted some Indian food, and since most places were closed being Sunday, we ate at Indian Curry House.  I regret to report that the food tasted absolutely horrid.  I do not intend to sound unkind, but the experience here was foodie horrible.  I could not tell if the food had gone bad or if the spices were mixed incorrectly, but the food smelled as vomit. The chutney was brown and had gone bad.

So we paid ~$40 to choke and have my throat nearly close, which was not how either of us wanted to spend our evening on vacation.  We had to leave prematurely for health reasons and ended up throwing away the food.  The biryani I ordered, a lovely vegetable rice dish when done right, had two sorry excuses for carrot pieces that were shaved n shriveled.  $40 wasted for food that was neither passable or palatable.  If I had my wits about me (throat closing and all), I would have rejected the food, paid for the appetizers that we did eat, and excused myself.

Just so you don't think me a prude, I make my own dal and curry dishes at home.  So I have an idea of what decent Indian food tastes like.  If you want Indian, then be patient and wait for Tibetan Kitchen to open (closed Sundays; open starting at 11:30am weekdays).  Otherwise, if you've had a good experience there, then I wish you well and do not wish to rain on your parade. :D

The atmosphere here is unattractive, the service is indifferent, and the food is mediocre at best. I don't know if it's fair to expect Indian food in Victoria to reach the level of the San Francisco Bay Area--but I think it's reasonable to expect better than this.

I was nosing around downtown and I had been craving curry for several days. I noticed they offered a $10 take-away option for their lunch buffet so it seemed worth a try.

Using a surprisingly large take-away container which they provided me, I served myself a generous lunch of chicken curry over rice, daal, a chickpea dish (which name escapes me) and a couple pieces of naan. Everything was quite tasty, though not fantastic either. The dishes were lacking in sufficient spices for my taste (forgivable for buffet fare) and the chickpeas and daal were a touch too salty. However, for the price and amount, the quality was still quite satisfactory.

The decor was mostly forgettable, though I wasn't really in long enough to make much note of it. I did think the restaurant was a too dark, however. It is set back in its building from the street and doesn't get any natural light and the lighting inside isn't really sufficient to compensate.

While service for take-away is a limited job, I was given prompt service when I came in the door and when I was ready to pay. Though, I have to qualify that since I showed up close to the end of the lunch sitting and the restaurant was nearly empty except for a couple tables of customers.

All in all, while I would give this place a miss for a nice dinner with company, the food and value were good enough that I will definitely come back for lunch or dinner for myself.

UPDATE: apparently ICH is under new ownership. This review was written a while after my last visit so it may very well be out of date. Sounds like it's time to try them out again.

Sometimes it's fine, sometimes it's pretty questionable. Very few of the dishes are consistent. The butter chicken is one of the only semi reliable semi decent dishes and even then it varies too much.

The interior is dingy and unappealing and. The service is poor to mediocre at best. I felt more like an inconvenience than a valued customer.

Their dishes are also overpriced and they charge fairly significant extra fees for everything (you'd think butter chicken should/could come with naan and rice, but no), one piece of naan and a small rice will set you back about $6 extra on a dish that's already around $20. I won't be giving them any more of my business.

The reviews I read were up and down. Today it was up for me!
had the lentil lunch special all vegetarian and I asked for it spicy and they delivered.

We had a group of 18 or so and they seemed to do well in a reasonable alloted amount of time.

    I would definately come again.

I figured that since no Indian has reviewed this place yet so I must!

I love this place. The food is fresh and butter chicken doesn't taste the same as every other chicken dish in the house. I agree there is little consistency but that's probably because it's a new owner and they are sill figuring out the right fit.

I would strongly suggest trying the 'South Indian Specialities'  like Chicken Chettinad and Masala dosa. However, you got to have a tongue for tangy stuff though to enjoy those. South Indian cooking uses Tamarind and other tangy ingredients so if you don't like spicy that may not be your thing

Bottomline, it's a very decent choice in Victoria. You cannot compare to Vancouver in term of pricing or choice. But it's authentic, homely Indian food.

I wanted to like this place I REALLY DID. In Victoria for our 10 year anniversary my wife and I love Indian food. SO far this has been our biggest regret in Victoria.

We ordered the butter chicken and saag paneer (medium and hot).
These were $15 or so each I think then rice ($3) and then naan ($3 each). The butter chicken was pretty good. Really flavorful. The saag was terrible. REALLY terrible. It was this really light pasty green with no texture OR flavor.

Since their menu goes out of their way to say that they want customer feedback I told our server that both of us thought that it had no flavor. She offered to make it more spicey and said that it tastes like real spinach and "that's what people like".

Oh great, so I'm the retard because I don't know what spinach tastes like!?!?! &*^^&%$%^& Now, I'm not Indian but I have come to love Indian food the last 4 years and have probably had saag paneer from 10 different places including Kentucky. And my general philosophy is that if your saag is not better than some place in Kentucky than you have a serious f*cking problem.

Our server's name was Krystina. I really hope that this was an isolated experience over an isolated dish but we will not give them another shot to fine out. Too risky. So, because our experience was miserable...ONE STAR for you!

Pretty good food and the Chef's combo was a pretty good deal ($20, naan, rice, veggie kabob, butter chicken, chicken curry).....

I had to run back to the hotel about 20 minutes after we finished eating though.... not good..... Wifey was fine though and ate what I ate.

I would've like to have eaten Indian Food at the Bengal Lounge at the Empress- but it's $30 per person for the buffet.

Our total bill at this joint was less than $30- so good value.

After walking around all evening my wife and I were ready for dinner and spotted India Curry House. The menu looked good so we gave it a try. That was a mistake. It took a very long time to get our food, even the appetizers and our drinks. Two different potato-based appetizers were actually the exact same filling. My standard vegetarian Somosas were mediocre, certainly ok but nothing special. The main courses were fine, but again nothing special (although the lamb was very tender, one of my preferred indicators of good Indian food). Where India Curry House really failed was on the Nan and Rice. The Nan was just wrong. Thick and chewy, and did not seem like it had been cooked in a Tandoor. The rice was truly plain, something I don't recall getting in an Indian restaurant previously.

Basically, there are better. Probably very nearby.

Worst place ever! I would never go back here, it's in a dingy basement type room, very dirty and small! I ordered the butter chicken and didn't eat one bite! I can't be certain it was chicken, that's how bad it looked. Too expensive for the quality, save yourself the dissapointment!

We ordered four different curries and three out of four tasted the same. Food was expensive and tasted average. It took full 1 hour for the food to come to the table. No wonder it got low rating.
