Visited India Bistro at 7:30 on a Saturday night. Though the restaurant was full, I was impressed that we were immediately greeted and seated. We were given menus, poured glasses of water and left for an adequate amount of time to decide on our meals. Our server was pleasant and super efficient. The food was delivered in a very timely manner, and delicious! I've got to say, I've eaten at India Bistro probably a half dozen times and I find the service and quality of food to be consistently awesome!

I'm a big fan of India Bistro! Best butter chicken I've had in Vancouver so far. I live in the area and I stop by India Bistro at least twice a month. It is one of my go-to spots if I decide to go out for dinner. The waitresses are always very nice and helpful. The service is great. The place has a certain charm to it with its candle light and a little darker ambiance. I've been here many time and I'll keep coming back for sure.

Review from Edward L.
Came here for some Indian allyoucaneat goodness. Not sure about weekends, but it's only $10.95 on a Sunday.
Parking is nonexistent unless you want to battle it out for a metered spot.
This place does have some charm. The walls and decor are a bit classier than most allyoucaneat places. The staff (looks like the owner) is VERY friendly, and quite helpful. Today it was quite dead (lazy Sunday after all), so there were only 2 other occupied tables. Nice and quiet.
In terms of food items, the selection is quite small (some 8 entrees and 4 salads), but you can definitely load up, and kill several cute little animals in the process. My favourite was the goat curry. They really got this one right. The other dish worth mentioning is the lentils. You can taste the subtle herbs. I can't explain it, but at most other places it tastes like something you'd buy out of a can.
So why 4 stars? The tables are WOBBLY. The problem with having metal tables (while they look good) is that if someone kicks the table, it'll vibrate at just the right frequency to cause all of your glasses to tip over. Yes, this happened, and created a huge mess.
Overall I was quite happy with the food and service though. Recommended. -

Our second trip to India bistro was for takeout: vegetable korma, chicken tandoori, garlic naan, and pilau rice. Cost a whopping $32.
I cracked open the rice and my tandoori only to find what can only be described as raw..! Peppers and onions, crunchy and uncooked, chopped and served with only enough pan time to warm them. Chicken was pre-cooked and unlike any tandoori I've ever had. Very dry and missing the classic red seasoning and colour - doubtful it's ever seen a tandoor. Flavorless, dry, hopeless.
So while I'm cooking my meal in a pan for the second time, my boyfriend opens his veggie korma to a resounding "what the fuck?" How does he describe the dish? Horrible, watery, tasteless. (He should know - he's a Brit.) Picture posted - it looked absolutely foul.
And then the garlic naan - ever seen fluorescent coloured flatbread? Skip this, too.
So there we have it. I highly recommend the pilau rice. Run away from the rest.
(Walk to the Indian place over at Denman and Comox - brilliant curry there!) -

Love this place for dinner. Best butter chicken I've ever had. (I don't like it too spicy and I find the flavour comes out better if you don't get it spicy).
Everytime we go, we get the butter chicken and then try to get one new thing, and we're rarely dissapointed.
They also have about 4-5 different types of naan bread. Butter naan is my favourite (you can see a trend here...) but the girlfriend likes the naan with nuts and spices in it. I think it's called Paswari naan, but even if it is I wouldn't know how to spell it properly.
We try to get here at least once a month. We don't eat out much but when we're craving indian, we don't go anywhere else.
One good thing we just learned is that they actually have FREE parking (for about 8 cars or so) in their parking lot off the alley behind the restaurant. Fantastic addition since who wants to find a parking space on Davie? -

The worst restaurant ever - bad food, very poor management /owners and over charged prices. DON'T GO!!!
The owners are rude and treat their staff very poorly.
Parking in the back for free but they will tow your car while you dine.
Too much grease in their buffet food. Butter Chicken tastes like plastic.
I'm sure this place should be closed down soon!!!! DON"T GO!!!! -
Review from Stef M.
If you ask for spicy, they mean it! I highly recommend the chicken methi and garlic naan. I enjoyed a Pimms cup there as well. Their curries are just so full of flavor! And the Pimms cup was really great - I think they used fresh squeezed lime juice instead of limeade. I tried my husband's chicken tikka masala too, and it was so flavorful. Good, fresh spice flavors.
Our server was so great, too - he was super friendly and had great suggestions for us on what to get.
-1 star because the tables are pretty cramped and it's really uncomfortable sitting at them because there's a weird bar that goes across at a 45 degree angle that I kept hitting my leg on. -
Review from Evilyn T.
The BF took me on a date here, since we love the Indian food, and we were exploring new options in our hood, we stopped in to check this place out. I liked the style of the restaurant; the brick walls and decor give the place a warm feeling.
The BF was set on ordering some veggie tandoori dish, which sounded really good in theory, but when it arrived, I was a little disappointed because it wasn't a saucy dish. I'm a saucy girl and I like my Indian dishes with enough sauce for me to spoon it up with some Naan bread, which we ordered, along with rice, and I had to eat both dry. You can probably see my disgruntled face while you are reading this. The dish was still pretty good, it tasted like the veggies had been skewered and BBQ'd, and it came with big chunks of paneer. It looked and smelled so good that the table next to us ordered the same thing after inquiring what it was that we ordered. But like I said... I need the sauce! I should have just hid a bottle of curry under the table to throw on top of that shit!
We also ordered a sampler appetizer, but tried to smooth talk the waitress into letting us have something instead of the chicken pakoras that came with it. Unfortunately, the waitress was not hypnotized by our awesomeness and said we could just get more veggie pakoras, which was fine by me. The pakoras were pretty good, but I wasn't as huge a fan of the samosas. I would like to try some of the other dishes at this place, since it smelled so darn good in there, and for some stupid reason I let the BF order, oh wait... it's because he paid the bill! I guess if you're paying you get to pick what you want. I knew I should have had another martini! I guess that means next time when the food is good, I have to pay, so it might be a while before we're back afterall!Listed in: Beers, Steers and Queers

This is one of the nicer sit down restaurants on Davie Street. The decorations and layout of the restaurant are welcoming and culturally appropriate. The food was not that great, but it would do in a pinch. We had the garlic naan, which was more like a very thin foccacia - it was not the texture or flavour we thought naan should be. We also had the chicken coconut, which overall had a nice flavour however the consistency was that of soup and the chicken had the texture of fake chicken. The other dish we had was eggplant bhartha, the texture was expected for this dish but it tasted like they had used liquid smoke to season it, yuck. We did see some people that appeared to be enjoying their grilled dishes, so maybe they are better. With other options in the area I do not think we'll be back here. It's too bad, it's a nice space.

We recently visited in Vancouver (living in TO) at the moment and went to India Bistro for dinner and absolutely LOVED it!
Granted, the service wasn't the best, but the food totally made up for it. I had a korma (for the first time ever, I'm usually not very adventurous with Indian food and just about always get butter chicken) and I was not disappointed. The sauce was nice and thick and the overall flavor was fantastic. I was there with four other people who ordered four different dishes and they all loved it. I was surprised at just how impressed I was!
I would recommend it. -

We went once for a-la-carte dinner and the food was spectacular. Ordered a mix of vegetarian and chicken dishes and everything was great except the Butter Chicken was standard (in fact haven't found really good butter chicken anywhere except in London). Not sure but the butter chicken served in Indian restaurants in the West isn't what it's actually supposed to be.
Anyway, we liked it a lot and decided to try the lunch buffet on a week day. Mediocre is the best I can give it at this time...maybe a bad day. Not enough choices.
Still a 4 star. Waiting to go once again for dinner. -

I love the food here!!! Our waiter (can't recall his name) but he was a friendly gay blonde guy, made recommendations as we had no idea what was good. We ordered the lamb methi (LOVED IT!), chicken tikka masala (good), chicken curry (good), curried mussels (My absolute FAVOURITE!!!!), lots of naan (so damn good!) and calamari (could've been less soggy), and mango cheezecake. You had to roll us out of there because we were stuffed so full. Thank you to our waiter for the wonderul suggestions.
Tried the lunch buffet but didn't like it as much as dinner. It was still really good as it had lots of chicken dishes unlike other Indian restaurants tha are just beans and rice for buffett.
No matter what, lamb methi and curry mussels must be a part of my meal every single time I go there (droooool). -
Review from Mark H.
Although I haven't been to a ton of Indian restaurants, India Bistro is my favourite Indian restaurant in Vancouver.
First time I stumbled on this place for lunch during the summer. They had their $10 lunch buffet which for an AYCE buffet, pretty darn tasty and a wide selection.
Most recently I went and we shared butter chicken (non-Indians' dish of choice) and Chicken Methi (because it just sounded cool). We added rice and also regular Naan bread as well as garlic naan, both of which were amazingly fresh and tasty.
The Chicken Methi had some punch to it but the flavouring was stellar. It has dry fenugreek leaves (never heard of them), but it was delicious. Butter chicken was solid as always.
Service was great from the moment you entered the door. The owner is always friendly and welcoming.
If you're downtown and crave anything Indian, take a walk down Davie and chow down here. -

This is definitely the place to go to get good service and excellent indian food. I'm a vegetarian and they had a great selection for my tastes.
The paneer makhani is killer! The veg. pakoras were perfectly crisped, The garlic naan is the best I've had, and the eggplant bhartha was amazing.
I've been twice and will be back the moment the craving hits.Listed in: Greatest Hits, Where you'll find me

Since moving to Davie street area in 2005, I've observed the miniwar going on between All India and India Bistro (they are directly across from each other). There's definitely something going on at these places... perhaps it's a little bit of a Montague and Capulet feud of our very own?
Both places seem to have trouble keeping staff, and I've even seen a few defect to All India from India Bistro. One Yelper commented that they were suprised to have a 'honger waitress'; this doesn't surprise me at all; I've also been served by Hispanic, French, Caucasian, and occasionally Indian staff! But on average, the service has been fine at both restaurants; reasonably efficient, reasonably pleasant.
I've chatted quite a bit with the owner of India Bistro, and he's a really decent guy, always eager to help out. I actually proposed to my wife there because of the ambience, the quality food and because of the fond memories we have of India Bistro. On that day, I was incredibly nervous, but the owner and staff went out of their way to make the evening a truly special one for my wife (yes she said yes!) and I.
Food: I've tried most of the dishes, and love them all. But my favorites are chicken jalfrezi, lamb rogan josh (If I want good lamb, I actually go to India Bistro for this dish), eggplant bhartha, butter chicken and the garlic naan which is delectable. Their veg. pakoras are also really tasty, though they can be a bit salty.
Ambience: It's a large and open restaurant and very tastefully decorated, and it's quite a romantic place to go for an evening dinner.
Service: despite the frequent changes in staff -which is frustrating -we've never been disappointed.
Pricing: very reasonable. The dishes may look small, but you'll fill up really quickly! -

This is hands down the best North Indian in Downtown Vancouver. I've been here 4 times with various friends and I consistently convert them into fans.
Went there again 2 days ago on a busy Sunday night and ordered shrimp vindaloo medium hot (probably a bit mild for someone from India) which was delicious and tantalizingly hot; a vegetable biryani which was well-seasoned, had a thoughtful potpourri of ingredients in it, and was aesthetically pleasing; and a side of peshwari, which was a sweet walnut-stuffed naan that was flavourful enough to eat alone. The lassi was a bit thin in consistency but well-done.
Service was provided by a pleasant chatty and attentive waiter. The ambiance fantastically versatile for both couples and groups. -

I was going to write "Just like every other Indian restaurant you'll ever encounter" but I forgot about the somosas. Instead of triangles, you get what looks like little bags of pastry twisted shut. See? NOT THE SAME.
The vegetables in a cashew curry sauce should be skipped. -
Review from Adam R.
Vancouver, BC
Let me be blunt about this place: if they cooked that way back in India they'd be marched out of the country. The lamb rogan josh tasted like...like...lamb in salty brown sauce. The paneer makhani seems to have been the result of two bags of sugar colliding into each other at high speed.
So yes, I'm giving this place one measly star. Across the road is the All India restaurant (yes, where the unnaturally jovial ali baba sits) where they make excellent rogan josh.
India Bistro reminds me of food court curry on a bad day. -

I order delivery from here every so often, when I am too lazy to make dinner. It's so delicious! Butter chicken, alloo ghobi, garlic naan!! MMMM. But the delivery portions are so small and very expensive. It's about $60 everytime I order... Pretty pricey for delivery.... JUST SAYIN!

My husband and I found this restaurant two years ago when we were visiting Vancouver. I've never had a bad Indian meal in Vancouver, so I was wanting to eat Indian while there. My husband will accompany me to Indian restaurants, but will only eat one dish: Butter Chicken. We were wandering the streets not far from our hotel and spotted the India Bistro. After checking the menu and confirming the presence of Butter Chicken, we went in.
We were both completely satisfied with our meals. His Butter Chicken was immensely flavorful. I'm not sure why I decided to go vegetarian that night, but I ordered the Eggplant Bharta. It was, quite frankly, the best eggplant dish, of any sort, I've ever had in my life. The eggplant was broiled first (perhaps cooked in the tandoor?) and had a marvelous smokey taste. It was perfectly spiced. Both are dishes had just the right amount of "heat" per our requests. (I tend to like my food quite a bit hotter than he does.)
We were back in Vancouver this past weekend, stayed at the same hotel, and again, made our way to the India Bistro. We each ordered the same dishes. My food was not quite the heaven on earth that I remembered, but still very, very good and definitely worth going back for. Did I mention the restaurant has a lovely, relaxed ambiance? The staff are friendly and helpful. I can definitely see a return visit the next time we are in Vancouver. -

Nice ambiance and good location on an interesting street. I always find Indian food to be hit or miss unless in London or New York so was pleased to find this gem.

A gang got together after church on Sunday, and after protracted discussions (there are, after all, lots of choices downtown) decided to go here for lunch. By that time, I didn't much care where we ate, as long as we ate SOON. But, I was pretty happy with the choice, as I haven't had Indian food in way too long.
It's a good thing it was within walking distance, because no sane person would ever try to drive a car down Davie Street. (That is, not if they actually want to get somewhere on the same day.)
The good points: it wasn't crowded or noisy, they serve an all-you-can-eat buffet (at least during Sunday lunch), our server (who turned out to be the owner) was attentive without being in our faces about it), the naan was hot, fresh, and plentiful, and the chai was good. (Judging by my companions' reactions, the coffee wasn't too shabby, either.)
The bad points: the buffet, while hitting the most commonly requested dishes (butter chicken, chicken curry, and Tandoori chicken), was, well, short. Really short. Granted, they don't have a lot of space, but, well, I like variety. Also, the food, while tasty, simply wasn't hot enough. I like fire in my curry, not simply enough saffron to colour the rice yellow. This curry was real, but considerably milder than I was hoping for. (I'm not sure if that's a regional thing, or if the recipe is toned down to cater to gastronomic cowards.) Finally, the price, while reasonable compared to many places downtown, is a dollar higher than one of my favourite all-you-can-eat sushi places.
Overall, while I enjoyed it, it didn't reach out and grab me by the taste buds, give a little shake, and scream "You gotta eat here again!" In fairness, we were eating from the buffet. If we were ordering off the menu, we could have had anything our little hearts desired, made fresh. Also, I should report that a couple of my companions swore undying loyalty, and want to eat here every Sunday. -
Review from Jeff S.
This has to be one of the best Indian lunch buffet's I've had! The Butter Chicken is so tasty and it's made with White Meat Chicken! Yeah! Yes, customers notice things like whether a restaurant "foists off" the dark meat chicken on customers, hooray for restaurants that spend a little extra to serve the best!
The other items on the buffet were all delicious, the restaurant was clean, the service was friendly and very efficient (ie. my water never ran out, and the server offered me more naan bread, extra dessert, etc). Go check out this place, you'll be glad you did! -
Review from Nathan N.
The food is definitely very tasty. The atmosphere is really cool, nice, and clean. Everything about this place told me I was going to have a nice meal. And I did, but only with a few minor problems. I'll address those at the end, because I do think it's worth going to, I was just unhappy with my experience and I would totally revise it if I had the time to go back.
Food: Tasty, was priced correctly, and stayed warm in little external candlelit trays.
Waitress: Seemed nice, attentive, and memorized our orders.
Now a few bad ones, which is why it gets only 3 stars for me.
I found a rock in my samosa. The manager had no clue how it got there, but I almost chipped a tooth. He gave me my samosa's for free. 2, we ordered both meals medium spiciness, and one was probably medium-hot while the other was definitely mild. Should have been more consistent. 3, It was really really hot in there. Maybe all the cooking or something, but I was sweating before, during, and after I ate.
I would still check it out, as I think it is a good place. I'll just make sure to hold the rocks next time. -
Review from Jillian F.
This was the first time going to India Bistro and I'm sure we will back on our next tripe to Vancouver. Our group, being the loudest ones, defiently made for what I would assume to be an interesting experience for everyone else. The staff however seemed to not even notice and at some points helped out. The food was all delicious! Personally, I had the Butter Chicken (which I have plenty of) and fell on love with it. I got this Butter Chicken on Medium and it was very spicy (I am a little afraid of what the spicy might had been) but delicious never the less. Overall, the whole night was a blast from the food and the wine's names to the people that work there, it was a very nice experience and am looking forward to it again.

Vancouver, BC
Post pride parade, with last bits of the heat wave still lingering, India Bistro was a nice, clean, inviting, and most importantly, AC equipped haven one can find along Davie St.
The interior comes close to other Indian fine dining establishments, though despite being liquor licensed, and categorized as fine dining, prices offer good value, with a very reasonable price point.
Service was very friendly, though I would have liked the water refilled more often with that scorching heat, not to mention the spiced dishes I've ordered. We requested medium spice and it was perfectly spiced to my liking. The flavours were very tasty and original, the spices and ingredients concocted were something I haven't tasted before, it was pleasantly unique. The chicken had a smokiness that hit the right spot. I would have liked the naan a bit chewier and denser, but nonetheless, it was a solid meal from start to finish.
A great find! -
Review from Emily C.
Hands down, the best Indian place downtown.
Love their Jalfrazi, Masala, and spice. Palak Paneer was a bit on the watery side. The butter chicken was fantastic. The entire place was pretty authentic but modern, service top notch. No complaints! -
Review from Cameron M.
Toronto, ON
There's absolutely nothing wrong with India Bistro. The food was fine, service was fine, decor up to date. For me though , it was just...unremarkable.
It's not like I walk around only putting the best of Indian food in my mouth but this place just seemed like the same old restaurant curry. It didn't seem to offer anything out of the ordinary or away from the traditional. It was all good enough, I didn't hear a complaint from my entire table, but I also didn't hear anyone dying to compliment it. Both vegetarian and meat dishes were fine.
One thing that got my goat and probably took a star away though is their choice to be one of those 'rice and naan are extras' restaurants. I understand attaching a price to those items but why some restaurants do that boggles my mind. Is there someone out there who eats curry without Rice or Naan? Can't you just give me a choice and include that in the price? It was confusing, we ended up not ordering enough and it was just annoying. If crappy places in the mall can offer rice and naan as a part of a dish, why can't a restaurant?
So yeah, if you want Indian in the Davie area, it's worth a shot. If you're looking for an amazing experience, I'm sure there's something better out there. -
Review from Alex D.
Vancouver, BC
Indian food outside of India is a strange beast. Each city seems to have it's own interpretations of dishes. Chicken Tikka Masala is probably the greatest example of this as it is a dish that was created in the UK and not India. I travelled through India in 2007 and found the food to be vastly different from the fare from what I have eaten in other parts of the world.
Keeping that in mind I think India Bistro does a few things with some authenticity. Firstly they don't serve beef. Beef is not really eaten in India even in the Christian areas in the south. Indian sauces therefore lend themselves better to lamb as a red meat. Since a huge portion of Indian's have a vegetarian diet you would be remiss not to tuck into a aloo gobi or palak paneer at some stage.
Secondly they don't seem to artificially colour their dishes. This is a very common practise in Indian restaurants outside of India. If you ever get those bright orange sauces they no doubt have been touched up.
I wanted to try my beloved Goan Fish Curry but I am afraid to in what seems to be a predominately North Indian restaurant. I did however try some other dishes which were above average and spiced nicely. I am going to order the same dishes at All India soon for a comparison but until then India Bistro is my local. -

There seems to be at least two Indian restaurants on every block in this part of Vancouver, and it was hard for us to tell which ones were really good...but India Bistro came recommended, so we decided to try it.
And I'm so glad we did! We had the lunch buffet, which featured fresh veggies, several types of curry, tandoori chicken, papadums and tons of different condiments and chutneys -- along with the requisite rice and naan.
The naan was nice and chewy and crisp, perfect for dredging through the different curries. I loved the zucchini masala, which was a nice take on the customarily chicken dish. The butter chicken was also amazing -- almost too rich for its own good.
I especially loved the tandoori chicken -- you could tell by the deep, rich color and flavor that it had been marinated for a while and then cooked in an authentic clay oven. It was just amazing with the yogurt sauce and some of that spicy green sauce!
Service was attentive and friendly, and the price was just right, too. I would totally eat this for lunch every day! -
Review from Ann I.
The service and atmosphere here was great, but the food was blah... I had the Chicken Methi and it was completely and utterly bland. The Garlic Nan that everyone speaks about on here is definitely true! Maybe their other dishes are good, but do not order the Chicken Methi, it was somewhat of a white cream sauch that was flavorless.
I for sure have had much better Indian food and was a bit disappointed. -

Spicy! Good spicy. Proper Indian spicy. Portions were quite filling, especially if you want soak up all that curry with naan. Rice was really fragrant, light and fluffy but I wish the naan was more substantial.

This place is OK. The atsmophere is good and the drinks are awesome. The food was decent but not exceptional. We had the masala but it was a bit bland compared to what you get at other parts of the city. Excellent naan, but for the price the best value is the Indian Oven on 4th in Kits.

Review from Swati B.
Heard that Vancouver has a huge Indian population...and being of Indian descent and visiting Vancouver, thought we'd get some Indian food and checked out India Bistro.
The decor to this place is pretty awesome...and its a cute little restaurant!
The service was a tad slow but it seemed that they were possibly understaffed...our waitress was running around, making drinks, getting orders and serving the food to half the place...and since we saw this, we didn't really feel the need to complain as she really was working hard.
We ordered the Malai Kofta, the Chili Paneer, the Veggie Sizzler, The Chaat, the Eggplant Bhartha and some garlic naan (hey dont judge there were 6 of us..and we were hungry!)
AMAZING food. The Eggplant was reallllly good...and the Kofta was like I've never had before, great ginger flavor and it wasn't tomato based so it was very different for me. The Garlic Naan was just ok but other than that the food here was amazing.
The mango Lassi was awesome...
I was a little disappointed that they were out of the mango cheesecake and the chai creme brule....I had the Mango Ice cream which was pretty good as well.
The prices here are pretty good for all the food you get...and a LOT cheaper than the other indian places in the area. Definitely recommend this place -

first time we came we were checking out the menu that's hanging outside right above the door. the owner opened the door to let us in cos he didn't want us to stand in the cold. he gave us menus and we decided to stay. i'm glad we did.
the place is beautiful and very authentic. the waitress was very friendly and the food to die for. best paneer makhani i've ever had. very creamy and simply delicious. just like everything else.
i can't wait to come back -

On another visit to Vancouver, we juust stopped here again for dinner. Great food again. This time te only dish we didn't like as much was the chicken tikka masala. It had a very overpowering smokey flavor. Lamb Vindaloo and methi were great as were the matar paneer, aloo gobhi, raita and diverse naan and paratha. In fact the paratha was one of the best I've had! Service was pleasant again!

This food was hella authentic to me, I wish I lived in the area, the servers were nice and everything we tried was amazing and fresh (and we were Africa hungry so we ordered a lot of different dishes), and wash it down with a little Kingfisher and you're set. I kick it brown style a lot, and I can honestly say that this food was pretty good comparatively to even what some of my friends cook auntie style. I'd at least say give it a go if you're around and looking for some new flavors to spice up your life. I really appreciated that they had bollywood songs on in the back and a few of my favorites came on which really made it perfect for the only gora kid there.
