Nooooooooo!
I just wanted the final say before this fine establishment bids its ultimate farewell. A staple in the eccentric seam of the West End, Independent Flixx has served as my go-to place to find a new cinematic inspiration for the past four + years, and has been an institution in the Vancouver independent movie store scene for 15 more than that.
Shelves upon shelves in aisles upon endless aisles of every film from every genre imaginable, this sweet little guy never ceased to produce the goods in a time of need. With staff who are just as stoked about a thrasher as they are about a rom-com (what, it happens), Independent Flixx will be sorely missed.
I am going to laminate my card and keep it forever and ever. Er, wait. The card *is* laminated. I will keep it forever and ever.Listed in: Five Star Holler, My West End, Rainy Days are Here

Aisle upon aisle of endless entertainment. The wall of foreign films sorted according to country is an easy place to spend an evening, never mind the sheer joy of renting something to take home.
For a moment I fantasized about working here. Just imagine, you can choose anything you want and watch to your heart's content, every time you come to work!
Frequent renters will rejoice, if they remember their stamp card. Rent 14 and get the 15th free. -

Pretty much any movie you want, from the blockbusters to the obscure, can be located here. Staff are very knowledgeable and helpful, and will offer reliable advice on movies they've seen. Well laid out, so it is easy to find what you're looking for. Lots of TV shows and foreign films, as well as Gay/Lesbian, porn and a well stocked Cult section.
If I'm undecided, I usually follow Mary's picks! -

You want obscure?
Check out the titles on the shelf that require a cash deposit to rent.
Cool!
My only complaint is that it is difficult to read some of the DVD titles as they are stacked narrow side to side.
However, I think you could pretty much grab a disc at random and be totally entertained.
Independent Flixx is the perfect example of a local company that WILL outlast the big corporate giants (Blockbuster and Rogers).
Right on!Listed in: West Ender

This neighbourhood video store has a wide selection of movies in a very small space. As the name suggests, it focuses on independent movies, stocking the near-complete range of the Criterion Collection DVDs, for example. It also has healthy sections of cult movies, documentaries, erotica, and movies with a gay and lesbian focus - not surprising, given the demographics of the West End. A small back room is where you'll find adult movies and lots of gay XXX.
Plenty of movies rent for three days or more, so this is a good place for even those who don't live in the 'hood, but are willing to search for that hard-to-find indie to rent. -

Independent Flixx is a rare bird. It's a local video store that manages to outdo almost all of its competitors in both service and selection.
I guess the two things must go hand in hand because not only are all the staff members huge film nuts that can gladly recommend anything from kids films to gay porn but they also manage to get some of the more interesting and rarer films in their store long before most others.
Granted, it's no Videomatica, but Independent Flixx can really hold its own against Happy Bats or more of the other big hip video choices and it is definitely one of, if not THE best place for videos in the West End.
Independent Flixx should not only be supported because it's a small local venture facing competition from the giant, faceless stores, but also because it is the perfect example of why these stores ought to exist and what they can achieve. -

Independently owned and in the community for almost 20 years, you can find a large selection of new movies here, as well as hard to find independent films, European and international selections, porn, erotica, documentaries and cult-following type of movies. They have seasons of certain HBO or TV shows like Dexter, The Office, Weeds and such. I really like people watching in the small store and it can get claustraphobic sometimes but the vibe is very communal. You'll need a $50 deposit and a credit card to sign up and get started, but after that it is smooth sailing.

I love this place. If I haven't found the kind of film I'm looking for within about 3 minutes, I just ask the staff and they ALWAYS hit the nail on the head. It's like asking Siskel & Ebert/Roper for a recommendation.
