I am living in Ottawa since long period of time and tried many barber shops in the past. Almost all of them were focused on female fashion. I searched in Yelp and decided to give Imperial Barber Shop a try. I was not disappointed; I had an awesome haircut.
Location is interesting (on the corner of Sparks St. and Elgin), staff is very friendly. -

This place is pretty cool. It's what you think of when you imagine 'Barber Shop' minus the old men with the strange moustaches.
They had a nice selection of magazines to choose from which was great but in my case unnecessary because I was only waiting a few minutes.
I just needed a hair cut and they got right to it, which was a little annoying. They didn't ask me any questions about how I like to wear my hair or whether I wanted any particular style but they knew what they were doing and were very friendly. They cater to grooming - trimming male facial hair in all its manifestations and applied a nice aftershave as well. -

I am not sure when it happened, but barber shops quietly went out of style. Maybe it was the 70s and all the men with long locks. Or the 80s with all those guitar metal, long-haired guys. Or, maybe men have ceased to be men - facials, pedicures, waxings.... But, much as a salon employee can give you the latest style, they know squat about "cleaning up" a man - trimming the nose hairs, the ear hairs, the eyebrows, etc. This is a necessary, but seemingly lost art. Until I discovered the Imperial Barber Shop. The name alone (Imperial = tradition, Barber = a masculine, hairy guy) communicates everything a man needs to hear. I went there because i was tired of telling the stylist what I wanted and needed, only to have to go home and take care of those meddlesome hairs by myself. Imperial Barber took care of all that - and I didn't even have to ask. That is awesome. It may be out of your way, but if you are a man, you need to make the effort.
