The reason we frequent Il Pasticcio is because it is like home cooking when you don't feel like cooking.
Nello Saporito has returned to Edmonton at his former location after selling his location in St. Albert and thank goodness, now we can go more often without the long drive.
Some of the favourites on the menu are the mussels when in season. The sauce is amazing, make sure you save some bread to soak up every last bit. The linguine with clams is also a favourite as well as the Mahi-Mahi and it is hands down the best Bruschetta in the city.
Although I tend to stick to the seafood dishes the spaghetti with meatballs is also amazing for a treat. Basically anything that they put the tomato sauce on is heavenly.
The portion sizes are quite large which for me is great because I can easily get two or three meals out of my entree.
When you go notice the compliments written all over the walls. It is the best endorsement for the food. -
Review from Rachel F.
It was 7:00 pm on Friday night of Labour Day weekend. We had no reservations but decided to go out. We ended up at Il Pasticcio. They had a wait (20 minutes) but that was nowhere near the length we had been told at other restaurants in the Oliver neighbourhood. Anyway, I knew that Il Pasticcio had a new owner, and I was interested in checking out the new menu. So it all worked out for the best.
We looked over the menu as we were waiting in the lobby (the restaurant is in a condo building across from LeMarchand Mansion. They have no street entrance, so you come in through the commercial entrance to the building. The waiting area is the lobby of an office building). I noticed a few of my favourites were gone from the menu. None of the dishes on the menu really thrilled me, but when we were seated, we saw the list of specials, and that was where the real excitement was.
We ended up getting the bruschetta with bocconcini as an appetizer. It was quite tasty, though I thought the cheese did not add anything to it which, if you know me, says a lot.. Next time, I will get it without the cheese. The appetizer did not come with enough bread for the bruschetta topping, but they eagerly brought us more upon request.
For dinner we had the gnocchi special. It was available with a variety of sauces. We ordered the Gigi sauce based on the server's description. The sauce was the worst part of the entire meal. A little too heavy on the wine. And we did not realize the sauce had meat. Fortunately, our omnivore friend was able to eat most of that dish.
In addition, we ordered the fusilli diavalo, also on the specials menu. This was a seafood dish with a cajun cream sauce. The sauce was exquisite. This dish, also, had meat (non seafood, but the chicken was easy to pick out). If you go and see this on the menu, order it.
We opted to skip dessert, even though the dessert menu and the specials were quite tempting. It's close enough that we can go back, even just for dessert sometime.
Overall, our meal was fine. Il Pasticcio is not my favourite Italian place in town (which, after my friend Antonella's house, would have to be Sicilian Pasta Kitchen), but it is good, if a little pricey. The service at Il Pasticcio is outstanding! -

My boyfriend and I went here last weekend to celebrate my birthday. We didn't make a reservation until later in the evening (about half an hour before we could be there) and that seemed to be fine.
We showed up here and we got our table and were immediately greeted by our server. She was very friendly, even though we could tell she was busy (the place was packed!).
We ordered a bottle of wine and that came pretty quickly too. While we were looking at the menu, we noticed that our favorite pasta dish (the gnocchi) had changed since our last visit, almost two years earlier.
We mentioned our disappointment and she offered to make the pasta that used to be on our menu. She said it would be no problem and they were happy to do it.
We ordered the "old" gnocchi (the gnocchi pasta in a gorgonzola tomato sauce) and the nights feature pasta (linguine with chicken, pancetta and roasted red peppers in a marsala cream sauce). Neither of us like red peppers, so we asked for them to take them out, and our waitress asked if we wanted to add anything. I thought that was really nice because many restaurants do not offer that.
We got our pastas in pretty good time. The gnocchi was amazing, but the feature pasta was bland bland bland. We were disappointed, but we enjoyed the gnocchi. We packed up the pastas so we could save room for dessert and we ordered the tiramisu and the rainbow sorbet (3 flavors: mango, lemon and raspberry).
Both desserts were fabulous as well. We were unable to finish our bottle of wine, and so our server corked it for us and we took it home.
Even though the feature pasta was bland, I still gave Il Pasticcio 5 stars and this is because I have never been disappointed with this restaurant before this occasion. Service is always amazing, food is to die for and the price isn't over the top.
Tip: ask for the OLD gnocchi dish. You won't regret it.
