Best customer service ever!  Twice in the past month I went to Customer service for two separate issues that could have been made complicated but instead they took care of my queries with not even a blink of an eye - one being a price adjustment even though the item was only going on sale for their Boxing Week deals and another was a return of 3 items ( We had bought 40 frames for Christmas presents - family pictures) and 1 of them broke when I was framing the picture and 2 just weren't up to snuff.  To top it off... I managed to bring the WRONG receipt and they still let me return it - and gave me a store credit.  They did note that when doing a return without a receipt - they only allow one return per year.

And in the past we have stopped in when we've broken a dowel after taking apart and reassembling an Ikea product and they've never charged us.

Customer service like this what keeps us coming back again and again!  Plus, their prices are great, too!

    Two BIG thumbs WAY up!

IKEA is a guilty pleasure - kinda like Disneyland, but it's free to visit. And it's probably more entertaining than a theoretical Swedish Pavilion at EPCOT Center would be. This is if you have daydreams about living in a recently remodeled condo.

IKEA sells cheap, practical furniture and household items that can last anywhere from 6 months to 20 years (My parents still have a BILLY bookshelf bought in 1990 in their garage), depending on how much abuse you put the furniture under (most of their particle board furniture cannot take much abuse without some damage).

And the guiltiest pleasure of all is the IKEA cafeteria. While they are obviously frozen, I always enjoy my swedish meatball meals whenever I go - the best part of which is the lingonberry jam they serve with it. I also ate a salad with goat cheese and dried blueberries, which was actually quite delicious. I need to add Dried Blueberries to my next salad - I may even prefer them to Craisins.

However, I also purchased a Princess Cake, because the pink marzipan cover was just too appealing. But the taste itself was just too creamy. It wasn't flavorful enough to be worth whatever exercise I would need to partake in to burn it off.

I also need to point my thumb down to the Elderflower and Lingonberry drink boxes - both tasted more like sugar than the Elderflower or Lingonberry flavours.

I have a real love/ hate relationship with Ikea. I've tried to feel utter love for the place, but I can't do it. Am I getting to old? Am I not trendy enough? I just don't get the appeal of buying large pieces of everyday, high usage poor quality and will end up in the garbage within a couple of years.

I love how clever they can be with their design and storage, but when it comes down to it, their stuff is junk. I know, I know, the stuff is not meant to be investment pieces, but even when they are freshly put together they seem so flimsy.

I can't get enough of their frames. I love their smaller storage containers. I loathe their most of their art graphics. I love the store layout, but can't stand the crowds.

It's just one of those places that I genuinely don't get the hype and the masses that flock there. I can take it or leave it.

I recently moved and thoroughly enjoyed getting my bed from Ikea.  The delivery charges are super cheap, trust me.  They charge $69 for delivery within Edmonton proper (I believe $79 for the satellite cities) and that rate is a fixed rate for up to 700 lb.  That's a lot of tonnage!  700 pounds would easily entail an entire bedroom furniture set, a couch, some side tables and possibly even a light dining table.

Although I only purchased a bed and some other small things (which I carried with me in my car), I still thought the $69 was totally worth it.  It takes a couple of days to get it to you because of the long waiting list.  I ordered mine on a Thursday and they delivered it on that Sunday morning.  Not bad.

Also, it's worth mentioning that they have van rentals that start at a cost $20 for 2 hours, but it's better to call in ahead of time to make sure a van will be around when you do end up buying the coveted computer desk you've been eyeing.  Of course, that's even better than the $69, but since I didn't know anyone free to help me, I decided to just get it delivered.

The furniture keeps getting updated and upgraded.  Every season entails something new, something different.  It's really a great place for a single person like me, who's not planning on buying permanent life-long furniture.

I feel like I shouldn't, but I just love Ikea. Their furniture might not always be super high quality, but for the most part it's just what I'm looking for... something that will suffice until I'm settled down enough to spend a bit more.

I always seem to find a pile of things that I NEED whenever I go. Plant pots? Must have. Moose shaped cookie cutter? Yes please. And one can never have too many lint rollers around.

Unless I'm shopping with someone who can't wait to get going, I always try to stop by the restaurant too. It's one of the few places where eating out doesn't really cost much than eating at home. Plus they have lingonberry juice. Mmm...

Ikea is the place I come to when I want a nice $5 bottle of Stella. Yeah, it sells furniture too, but it's also one of the cheapest places to go for an import beer. My only complaint about this location is that it's a bit out of the way for pre-drinking purposes.

Beer aside, Ikea also has a great selection of furniture. It's a good spot to reenact scenes from 500 Days of Summer. I like to just wander and look at how the displays are set up trying to glean some interior design sensibilities.

IKEA used to position itself, way back in the 80s and early-90s, as "'Swedish' for 'common sense.'" In that sense, the store remains a source of inexpensive, good quality furniture.

And while the behemoth of a store seems excessive and staggering, you needn't really go anyplace else to purchase furniture and homewares on a budget.

But what's really fantastics about this place is the dirt cheap food. A hot dog for $0.50? Yes please! Early morning breakfast for a couple bucks? OK, sure!

Nothing beats shopping on a full stomach, so in this sense, IKEA is filling two niches: your belly and your home.

I love visiting, even if it's just to browse their showrooms. And even with screaming kids and whole pile of people, it never feels too crowded.

And that, my friends, defies common sense, Swedish or not.

I love walking through Ikea.  There are all kinds of neat things that I never would have thought to buy.  They even have this set-up where they took a space the size of a prison cell and installed a kitchen, dining room, bedroom, foyer and washroom.  All to make a point about functionality in limited space.  Brilliant!

A word of advise though... Bring a truck.  My wifes Focus just about screamed at me when I started ramming bags of crap into it.

    I love Ikea.

once you walk in,it's like where do i start? you should pack a lunch because this place is huge, or better yet go to the caffeteria and enjoy a $1 breakfast or their awesome swedish meat balls.

all their items are tagged in english as well as swedish so by the time you're done, you'll speak fluent swedish except for the bad words. I found out a Moses is a desk chair, wow.

all their items are inexpensive and the selection is awesome. the only issue i have is understanding the instructions when putting the furniture together.

Oh IKEA, if only you knew the joy you bring me!

I have so much stuff from IKEA. The great thing about the place is you can have the cheap, bare-bone basics or you can spend a little more money to get something classier. They have a really good price and style range. It's still cookie cutter furniture, but the quality is in my opinion pretty darn good for the price. The furniture is easy to assemble and the instructions are surprisingly straightforward for just being pictures. After years of shopping at IKEA, instructions with words frustrate me!

Their kitchen stuff is pretty much the best. I have potato peelers that were dirt cheap and work better than the expensive brand-name ones. I bought a lemon juicer for a dollar there years ago and it is still my favorite. Basically, most of the kitchen stuff is very affordable and of top quality.

The store is also a great place to go for a cheap, fun date! Decent food for next to nothing, including frozen yogurt cones for a dollar! It's fun to just walk around and play in the show rooms. It's easy to spend several hours here wandering around and looking at all of the pretty furniture and accessories, fantasizing about your dream home.

One drawback: the lineups are horrible!! And you can easily get suckered in to buying a boatload of tchotchkes because they display them in rows beside the isles and you're standing there for so darn long!

(P.S. One day, EKTORP chair, you will be mine. I await the day I have room in my house to get you....)

Friends, Edmontonians, Countrymen, lend me your eyes; I am here to praise the restaurant, not the furniture.

What is better than sliding greasy $1 IKEA breakfasts down a parched gullet after an evening of ethanol-fueled debauchery?   Only that one has likely cleared enough room for a pair of $0.50 hot dogs and a $1 frozen yogurt after walking the tortuous pass through the displays and warehouse.

I don't care for furniture that must be assembled with a hex key.

I could spend a day in Ikea. Picture lounging in the morning in one of their bedroom set-ups, stopping into the fast food lounge for a hot dog at lunch, going back upstairs to hang out in a living room, and rounding off the day with a full chicken dinner at the restaurant.

Not only does Ikea feature a massive warehouse of inexpensive furniture, its massive upstairs is a wonderland of room ideas to take home with you. Whether you are a modern sophisticate, you actually like the dorm room look, or you want your kitchen to be cozy, Ikea has set up a room that fits your tastes. What's really handy are the pre-made item cards and pencils at each station, where you can write down item #s from each room to pick up from the warehouse downstairs.

Ikea wins major points for being well-rounded. By that, I mean there is a huge range of products for every room in your house. Whether you are re-decorating your office, bedroom, living room, bathroom, kitchen, childrens' bedroom, guest bedroom, etc. you can find pieces for it at Ikea. Ranging from large pieces (entire wardrobe and conference sets) to dainty tea cups, Ikea really does have it all.

Swing by now and then to find their seasonal items, too. My visit earlier this week was a major scoop for the news on the cutest Christmas items. Ikea is carrying full Christmas trees as well as smaller decorations for shoppers on a budget.

You will be hungry, though, after your trip through this massive store. Luckily, Ikea serves cheap fast food (50 cent hot dogs!) and cheap dinner fare, too (full chicken dinner for $10).

Just make sure you think before you buy: that coffee table may take you three hours to put together! But it will be beautiful when you are done.

I've a few more Ikea items that deserve gushing about, adding to my previous list:

Record shelf. French press for my morning coffee. Round doormat made out of astroturf. Round bath mat. Pink cat food placemat with cartoons of skeletal fish.  Bright blue ceramic plant pot that looks perfect with an ivy growing out of it. DVD boxes that are perfect for storing 45s. Daim cake.

And since when did Ikea serve marzipan? xo.

The old IKEA was across the street from the old Holiday Inn The Palace and was a much smaller store.  When the present one opened up closer to the Airport, it was big and as Tim R. says it was all by its lonesome.  And now that the Borg Collective (South Edmonton Common) has assimilated most of the surrounding prairie, it's just part of a larger and disorienting suburban shopping experience.

Of course, where ever you go Ikea-wise, there you are.  They all pretty much have the same stuff and the food is good and cheap.  So if you need that nice looking and relatively inexpensive Chesterfield of acceptable quality for your den, what are you waiting for?

When I got my drivers license, one of the first things I did was go with my friends to Ikea...not for furniture but for their 50 cent hot dogs and $1 ice cream. Sure it cost more for gas and insurance, but it was still an enjoyable trek.

Back then this was a stand alone building in the middle of a field. Now the South Edmonton Common development is starting to catch up and engulf this building. It's not a bad thing, I just wish the roads were better.

Whether you're looking for furniture or just table top accessories (read: shot glasses), Ikea has everything you're looking for. They have a wide selection in every department, and it's hard not to find something for home, even if you weren't looking for something in the first place. One of my favorite sections is the bedding, as they try and recreate a bedroom feel by putting up walls with a fake tv on one of their desks- it helps you visualize how things could look like.

I like how there are short cuts through the store too. It is very big and can be easy to get lost. Ikea is definitely on top of my list for furniture, and stop in their cafeteria- their $2 pasta and $1 ice cream is a good deal!

Honestly, who doesn't love Ikea? It's modern fashion for your home, and it's mostly quite affordable. I just wish it wasn't so far! Even though I live on the south side, it's still a long drive for me too. After my partner and I moved in together, we made the pilgrimage to Ikea for some real furniture. The drive was so long though, and we weren't sure about the turn, so we ended up missing it and driving all the way to the airport.

That didn't phase my excitement though. As soon as we entered, I wanted EVERYTHING. I even suggested we just take one of the showrooms, put it in our shopping cart and call it a day. My boyfriend didn't think it was such a hot idea though.

The showrooms are a bit confusing, but I like how they're set up with such detail, it looks like someone actually lives there. I always fantasize that it's me actually, but I'm sure everybody does this ... right? You could be living in the chic black and white themed bedroom one day, and then the oak-furnished living room/home office the next. Sigh.

It's a good thing my boyfriend was there to restrain me, otherwise I really would have gone crazy and bought a bunch of stuff we didn't need. We bought a lamp and tv stand that day, for under $30 altogether. The energy-saving light bulbs they sell are really good too, they're the only ones we use. They're inexpensive and they save you lots of money with your power bill.

The process of finding our tv stand was a bit confusing though. They store the large furniture pieces that need assembly in their oversize storage warehouse, away from the shopping area. You have to take one of their order lists and jot down the catalogue number of your item, then go to their warehouse and find it. I think the warehouse is organized by department and chronological order.

Thank goodness they have a restaurant and cafe to feed hungry customers after a long day of home decor shopping. I was surprised to see how cheap the food was at the cafe, but it was explained to me when I saw the size of my hot dog. I had never seen such a tiny hot dog before. My friend told me they have Sunday breakfasts here for really cheap, and I keep meaning to go. I just can't wake myself up early enough to get there, so I'm still waiting for that day to happen.

If you like things for your house then IKEA has it all.  They have beds, sofas, bookshelves, tables, chairs, desks, bathroom stuff, kitchen stuff, pictures and more.  It's a huge place so if you go you better grab a cup of coffee and go through the place nice and slow you can enjoy all the furniture.  They style up some rooms using the furniture to show you how a small room can look great and look like it has so much space.  My friends and I love to go through and mentally list what we would put in our own apartments.  It's the best place to go and pick up things to help you organize rooms, drawers, or closets; they have so many different boxes or shelves to use for storage.  If you are starting in your own place I suggest the sofa beds they have.  They look great and depending on how much you want to spend you can find a comfortable mattress.

Not only does IKEA sell furniture, but they also have a restaurant for really cheap.  You can make a date out of it; kind of like dinner and a movie but at IKEA its furniture and a dinner!  They also make really good cinnamon buns.  You can also pick up some Swedish meatballs, which they are famous for.  They have a whole section on food products that have been imported from Sweden.

Also the staff is very helpful.  They can help you with measurements or style ideas for the space you have.

As Robin said, a trip to Ikea is a fun adventure. Since I live way on the Northside, far from Ikea on the Southside, I rarely make it out to Ikea, except when a friend with a car wants to go.

The showroom is kind of a crazy maze that I think was designed to confused people on purpose. Which way did I just go? Where am I now? Did i just pass that? It's all fun though, sort of, until I start getting annoyed.

I've found some great stuff here for cheap. I like getting those cardboard magazine holders that have totally helped me stay organized. I have a couple of those square side tables that were only $15 each! And I also got a really nice, dark wood three-drawer dresser--I absolutely love it. Ikea's dishes, pillows, and rugs are really cool too. They often have super funky and vibrant designs. I'm not a fan of many of their lamps, except for the paper lamps, which are actually pretty cheap. I also bought a futon here that is actually being used as a spare bed, and that's worked out great.

Ikea's restaurant upstairs is just as great as their merchandise, and it's affordable too. The meatballs are really good, and I love the cafeteria style. The food concession downstairs has delicious frozen yogurt for $1 and hot dogs for 50 cents.

Although Ikea is a major corporation, it is not evil. I once saw an article in a magazine, where these journalists investigated Ikea, trying to find out something unethical about them, but there was virtually nothing. And Ikea was very open about all their business practices. Ikea is just good.

Ikea is a massive furniture super store. It is great and cheap and brilliant.

It is so big you could get lost, if not for the arrows on the floors leading you to the exit. Ikea is brilliant because it makes you enter at one end of the store and pushes you to walk through the entire store before you can make it to an exit in hopes that people will find things they didn't come for and buy them. The strategy works. My advice is to come here with a friend who has self control and can control you. Never come here if you don't need anything because it will suck you in and trick you into buying stuff.

Now that I am done making Ikea sound like some evil being, it actually has amazing things inside. Trendy furniture and decor. Even if you don't own a home they have plenty of cool things for one's room.
It is a great place to come too if you need something but be very careful because it will give you more than you came for.

Who doesn't love Ikea just a little bit? Even if you are not a fan of their "swedish-inspired" stye, it is still fun to go for a saunter through and check out their mini-rooms and lay on the beds.

I shop here often because I am a student and the thought of spending more than $30 on a duvet cover terrifies me. The prices here are amazingly cheap, but the crappy thing is that it reflects in the quality. It depends on what you are buying, but I would not spend money on a house hold staple (like kitchen cabinets, a leather couch or expensive chair) because even though it is cheaper than the "big guys", the quality is not there and it is not worth the money.

This place can get pretty crazy on the weekend-- Saturdays especially. If you are not a fan of screaming children and crying babies then I would try to avoid this place on Saturday and Sundays.

It's a good thing they moved Ikea so far away from me. I have a great deal of difficulty restraining myself. One day I was SO proud of myself because I walked out of there having only spent $25!

Ikea is totally a destination shopping trip. It's like a local vacation where you bring home lots of cool stuff for the home.

Many people likely aren't even aware that at one point, before moving to the southside, Ikea lived in West Edmonton Mall! I thought it was the coolest place ever back then because I was a kid and it was the most confusing store to find your way around. I don't think there were any shortcuts like there are now. If you didn't follow the arrows, you could very well get stuck in Ikea. It was brilliant actually because it forced people to check out the entire store and it's a proven fact that after 30 minutes in a store a customer is 50% more likely to spend more money than they intended walking in.

It just occurred to me...that's likely why I insist on travelling backwards through Ikea now. I almost always start at the cash registers and work my way through the shortcuts and such finding everything I need before returning to the cash register to pay for it all.

I've only ever had to return something once because it broke and they were really easy to deal with over it.

    Oh IKEA, I love you!

This is the place to go for furniture.  For the most part, they have cheaper furniture because a lot of it is self-assembled, but they do have some that is not.

As much as I love IKEA, some of their stuff is pretty cheap.  It has to be for the prices they have!  But it's a great place to get furniture when you are just starting out or moving out for the first time.  If you're on a budget - go to IKEA.

I like the As-Is section of IKEA because it's even cheaper!  This is where they take floor models and slightly damaged goods and mark them down.  I can usually find a pretty sweet deal here.

I also love the Swedish food store at the end of IKEA.  You can get 2 hot dogs and a pop for something like $1.65.  It's crazy!  They also have great cinnamon buns.

The actual food they sell is good too.  Some of the frozen desserts are really good and I really like the cheeses.  You have to try the meatballs too - so yummy!

I always love looking at IKEA.  It's a good time!

IKEA is a great company with very good business practices. They do what they do very well, and their product is the good value for the level of materials and workmanship.

The problem with IKEA arises when people don't take it for what it is: disposable, mediocre, contemporary furnishings. If you expect to wow your friends and family with your design savvy, or that your products will last more than 1-2 years, you're living in a dream world.

Even over a relatively short term, say 10 years, you'll end up spending FAR more on replacing IKEA furniture and lighting than you ever would at a reputable boutique like 29 Armstrong or Dwell Modern - unless you're the kind of person that would rather collect a bunch of junk instead of having a few special pieces.

Ikea is indeed a dangerous place. To avoid the temptation of purchasing too many products, I always bring shopping list with me; otherwise I will end up buying anything but the products I came for.
Any time of day and any time of year, Ikea is super busy; and not even its remote South side location is able to deter shoppers from coming. In fact, it is easy to make a day out of shopping at Ikea.
Firstly, there is an upper level with all the fantastic showrooms. I adore Ikea designers and decorators' creations: showrooms look cozy, organized, without a single spot of wasted space. Everything is color coordinated without being too matchy-matchy, and there is a nice flow to all rooms. I love that every piece of furniture can be touched, opened, sat on and overall closely inspected. I also love stealing ideas from Ikea's showrooms: )
The lower level is where all furniture parts and home accessories are. I love how Ikea attends to every storage need a human being may have, and sells such ingenious items as shoe boxes, storage with compartments and closet storage systems.
Ikea's famous buffet is another reason why people rush in every day. Everything on the menu is inexpensive, simple and delicious.
