For the longest time I didn't actually realize that this store was called 'If Only.'  I thought it was all one word and didn't really understand what 'Ifonly' meant.  I finally figured it out.  Aren't you proud?

If Only is a surf shop that has a bunch of cool stuff for guys and girls... but mostly girls.  I'm not much of a surfer person (especially since it's winter) but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy browsing the store.  They've got some pretty nice clothes inside that I could wear on a regular basis.

I don't know about pricing at other surf shops, but the regular clothes here seem to be a little expensive.  I don't think I could bring myself to spend that much on clothes, but some of the stuff is really nice.

They also sell surf boards, as well as wetsuits and accessories.  Everything you need to get out on the waves you can find in this store.  The staff are knowledgeable so you don't have to feel funny about asking for help.  Perhaps I'll pick up surfing this season...

There seems to be a small but mighty surf community in Halifax, and just a few downtown shops to accommodate the sport. A sunny Friday afternoon lead me to Queen Street's "If Only", in a quest to know just a little more about our local surf culture.

I imagined there being much more apparel floating around of shelves and racks. Billabong and Roxy are the first brands that come to mind, and so the abundance of surfer girl and boy basics decorated my preconceived notions.

Can you tell I'm not a surfer gal? I guess maybe these brands are more the posy names that use the surfer image, but in this real-life surf shop, they were nowhere to be found. Instead was a minimal selection of both women's and mens clothing-- brands read more along the lines of RVA. A few cute tops were placed here and there, but for the most part the apparel is strictly for the act of surf. Beach warming sweaters and shells, water proof sandals, and trunks for the guys made for some high quality active gear.

And of course, the main portion of the shop is dedicated to boards and wet-suits. I lingered briefly, although not knowing what to look for (in the slightest), carried on my way.

It seems like a spot to shop if you are into the waves... and it was nice to see this local shop keeping it real with authentic gear and service. Surfs up.

If Only is the kind of store where you want to touch everything, because it's all so pretty and lacquered. Okay, that's mostly just the surf boards, but everything else is nicely touchable, too, from the surf and skate clothes to wetsuits.

The shop specializes in handcrafted surfboards and gear for the serious surfer, so it can be a little intimidating to go in there if you're just a recreational boogie-boarder like me. Still, they're friendly enough. Unfortunately, when I went in late in the season, their wetsuit selection was pretty picked over. I suppose they were gearing up for the winter surf season here - but that gear is a bit too hardcore for me.

The shop itself is gorgeous, like a gallery of surf art. You'll be tempted to walk out with a beautiful surfboard just in case you ever decide to take up the sport.

If Only Surf has a great history behind the name. If you are in there ask them.

This has to be one of the nicer surf shops I have been in. It is a little more upscale inside but I was pleasantly surprised at the prices. A jacket for around $200. There was a lot of cloths for guys, not much for girls. But the clothes I saw were nice.

The store has that little something extra to it, pretty sleek. Great staff on hand, and this store has a great story attached.

Nova Scotia doesn't strike me as the most likely place to find surfers, but I learned differently when I moved here. There's a thriving surf and skate scene, and If Only caters to this crowd. Boards, wetsuits and accessories like fins, board wax and board covers are all available here, and they look pretty snazzy.

The clothing selection can help those who don't surf look like they do. DaKine, Roxy, as well as well known skate and snow brands like Hurley and Burton are available here. I also noticed a display of TOMS shoes - a brand I'd heard of but not tracked down. They donate one pair of shoes to a child in need for each pair that is purchased. Good stuff.
