Been to Ichiban several times now.  It's a nice family run sushi place and right by the Bon Ton Bakery.

Went recently on a Thursday night with a friend of mine.  Place was fairly busy but we were able to just drop in and get a seat right away.  Can't remember exactly what the prices were (just going to estimate).

We shared a jellyfish salad ($6) (not on the menu) and it had a nice crunchy, chewy texture to it.  They also start you out with complimentary miso soup - was nice, a bit salty but warm enough to help us get over the frigid cold weather outside.  Basically your typical miso soup your served at Japanese restaurants.

We went the maki roll route as my friend only likes those.  We ordered 4 types:

    1)  White dragon maki (had weird coloured roes on it - don't recommend getting it, it's an inside out sushi roll with tuna on top). $9

    2)  Lava maki (yummy with unagi, avocado and soft shell crab) $9
    3)  Volcano maki (tasty as well with eel, spicy tuna and avocado) $9
Note: We didn't realize but 2 and 3 are pretty similar.  Both good but probably better to order more variety. LOL.

    4)  Sunset maki (good - tempura crumbs, avocado, cucumber, tuna and salmon on top) $9

For dessert, we split a tempura vanilla ice cream ($7).  We wanted to get mango but they were out (they also had green tea as an option).

Dinner was about $50+ not including tip.  Pretty reasonable for the amount of food that we got.  Quality of sushi is pretty good for Edmonton and service is friendly.

My friend and I went to Ichiban on a whim, one Friday night. The restaurant is tucked into a little strip mall in the west end. We walked in, and the server asked us if we had a reservation. We didn't but looking around the small room at all the reserved tables, we felt Ichiban was a good choice, and took a seat at the sushi bar.

We chatted, until our server brought us our waters and finally took our order. I ordered the Okonomiyaki to start, and my friend ordered the gyoza. For dinner, I got a bento box with chicken teriyaki, tempura, and sushi, and she got the bbq ribs.

It took a long time for our food to arrive. We got our miso soups moments before the appies. Which was fine, as the miso soup was unenjoyable, filled with tiny bits of tofu, specks of seaweed, and a peculiar taste. This was not the tasty miso soup I expected.

Putting it aside, my friend and I were excited to try the Okonomiyaki, billed usually as a Japanese pizza, but listed on their menu as a Japanese pancake. Pancake was definitely a better descriptor, with the dense (cabbage-filled?) cake, topped with a sweet ginger sauce. It mostly sat untouched.

Our mains arrived next, and I was surprised to learn the chicken of my chicken teriyaki was breaded. It still tasted good, and was my favourite part of the bento.

Bento salads are known for their simplicity, and this was no exception. But rather than the creamy dressing I've been made accustomed to at other local Japanese eateries, it was a vinaigrette that didn't really work.

The sushi was good, it included a tuna belly, salmon, and two tuna maki. The maki, as well as the side of rice, was not sticky enough. Both collapsed into many tiny not-easily-pickupable-with-chopsticks pieces. They taste good, but are an effort to eat.

Meanwhile, my friend attempted to cut her ribs with a knife and chopsticks. She was fairly happy with her meal, although also didn't enjoy the miso or salad.

As for service, we were mostly forgotten, even though there were plenty of people on staff. We had to ask for refills of our water, no plates were cleared, and we waited for the bill, but ended up just standing in line to pay for it instead.

Ichiban is not my favourite Japanese restaurant in the city, and I wouldn't recommend a visit.

Ichiban may appear to be hidden away in a strip mall in a quiet west end neighbourhood, but it has become a popular haunt for sushi lovers.  The sushi artists behind the counter work extremely hard and fast during the lunch and supper rush, creating beautiful works of art on the plates.  Quite often I see large groups enjoying an entire boat full of sushi - I fight the urge to whip out my camera and take a picture.

Ichiban also offers fresh and delicious meals, such as bento boxes with a variety of meats, tempura, sushi, rice, and salad.  Vegetable tempura is a personal favourite of mine, with its light, crispy batter.  Udon soups, seafood, and meat dishes also abound.

Especially busy over lunch, Ichiban offers several lunch specials, including bento boxes and teriyaki chicken -- lightly breaded pieces of chicken over rice drizzled in sweet teriyaki sauce.  One of the best I have ever had.  And sushi - there are too many varieties to count.  Many are vegetarian, some have cooked fish, and many are traditional raw delights.  Have some Japanese tea with your meal.  Ichiban is definitely worth a visit for lovers of Japanese food.

I recently returned to Ichiban for a second go, this time when I went it was pretty busy, about 8 tables.. We waited around a little bit to sit down and then we waited even longer just to get menus. This time we got the sushi & maki boat which came with 12 assorted sushi's and 3 makis, I skipped on the california makis and got the mexican instead which cost a couple dollars to substitute. I also got my favorite toro sushi as well, can never go a meal without  ! Our food didn't take toooo long, a significant increase then the first time we came but nothing to complain about. Food was great just like last time, I was surprised at the sushi assortment, usually you get something a bit weirder like squid or eel. The only "weird" ones we got were crab stick and yellowtail. The yellowtail was extremely bland, but everything else we got was great. The other two makis we got were 4 pieces of the Canadian and 6 of salmon.

Then here comes the painful part which kills a star for me, we had a bit left over that took about 15 minutes for anyone to notice we were finished.. and then after that we didn't get our bill and we only got ONE sushi packet for our leftovers.... we had about 8 or 9 pieces left so I thought that was pretty ridiculous. So we ended up waiting around for about another 15-20 minutes in which I noticed that the waitresses seemed way more concerned about cleaning off the other tables for new customers rather then helping the customers they already had. I still can`t argue with the price though, we left with our bellies full and a box of leftovers for $41 !

Ichiban has a good variety of rolls and the sashimi isn't bad. It is a nice looking restaurant that is family run and very welcoming.

The food here is very fresh and the prices were decent. The service was good and quick. Everyone was so friendly. They were really busy at the time I went and they were offering so many lunch specials. They have cooked sushi here too, for people that don't like eating things raw.

Not a bad sushi place at all.

I have eaten here twice and both times enjoyed it quite a bit.  Besides great tasting food, the service was fast and the people who worked there were personable.  I'll go again for sure.
