I rate my hikes based on variety, difficulty, and reward.  This hike tgets 5 stars on all counts!

Variety: starts out as a regular desert trail, but gets into more scrambling, bouldering and rock climbing as you get deeper into the canyon. Depending on the season, there are also pools of water to navigate. Between the rock climbing and the water crossing, it keeps your mind engaged so that you don't get bored just walking along.

Difficulty: they call this a moderate hike. Plenty of little kids complete it, so I guess that's accurate...but I found it fairly challenging, actually, what with all the scrambling. It takes about an hour each way... for me, a perfect mid-grade hike.

Reward: I like hikes with a purpose -- and this one has a waterfall at the end which gives a sense of completion when you finally get to it.

The only downside to this hike is its popularity -- if you go on a weekend in spring or fall, it can be pretty crowded. Saying "Hi" to all the other hikers you pass can get tiresome, so my friend and I played a game and tried to give a different greeting to each person we passed. "Hi!" "Hey!" "Hello!" "Howdy!" "Hola!" "Good day!" "Top o' the morning to you!" It got old pretty fast!!!

Aside from the crowds though, it's all good here. Close to town (45 min from the Strip, in Red Rock National Conservation Area), easy to park, bathroom at the trail head, and cool and shady in the canyon, even in summertime. Check it out!

Ice Box Canyon was a lot longer than I expected, but worth it for sure. The beginning of the hike was nice and flat with a little incline. The scenery was beautiful and it wasn't too hot out (we hiked in early October). When we got into the canyon, we could tell why the canyon was named; the canyon was at least ten degrees cooler than the rest of the hike. The canyon trail was tough to follow after we got into the canyon but  there are a lot of options. We hiked as far as the waterfall, I'm assuming you can't hike much further. The hike itself is 2.5 miles roundtrip. MAKE SURE YOU TAKE WATER!!!

I hiked this trail at red Rock Canyon today.  It's a 2.5 mile round trip hike with some boulder scrambling.

From the parking lot, hike into the wash, cross the wash, and then walk up the stone steps.  Follow the trail along Ice Box Canyon until you reach a down section into the wash below.  This part of the hike is just about a mile in length.

After dropping down into the wash,  turn right and follow the wash as it winds through the canyon.  This will entail some rock and boulder scrambling.  If any of the boulders are too big to climb up, the trail will have a walk around to the left or right of the wash.  Sometimes you have to back track and go the other way, but this is the fun of hiking in a bouldering area.

From the entry into the wash, it's about 1/4 mile of rock scrambling to the end of the trail.  You'll know you're almost there when you see a tall, dead ponderosa pine leaning to the left.  The waterfall - usually dry as it was today - is just past this dead ponderosa.

When you get to the base of the waterfall, this is a good place to have a snack and chat for awhile before hiking back to your car.

Directions to trailhead:  Go west on Charleston Boulevard until you get to the Red Rock Canyon entrance.  From the fee booth (entrance fee $7), take the Scenic Drive just past mile marker 8.  The Ice Box Canyon Trailhead is on your right and is well marked.

I have posted some photos with this review.

    Enjoy!

Did this hike on November 13. I'm a bit unsure as to the difficulty - the brochure says "moderate" and the wooden trail sign says "difficult." It wasn't a difficult hike whatsoever, but, I am fairly fit when it comes to hiking so take from that what you will. You will do some boulder scrambling and there is no nice, wide, clear path to follow - you'll be going through some brush, over rocks, etc, so be prepared to climb.
