Review from Jim C.
I think there are few option for good coffee outside of the downtown core.
Which makes the Young/Agricola location that much more interesting, especially if you work within walking distance.
You walk in and the atmosphere is what you'd expect from a hipster hang out spot. And I do mean this in a nice way. It's actually pleasant to drop in, grab a coffee and sit for a while.
The variety of desserts, sandwiches & gelato also make this a nice change for lunch. It isn't cheap, coffee & food are on the expensive side, but you can taste the quality.
The range of natural food products in the store area is good for those wanting some flax or something.
If you can't decide what you want to eat/drink in Hydrostone and Lion's Head is not an option, then this spot might be just right. -

An amazingly beautiful Saturday afternoon on a long weekend was the perfect excuse for my first visit to Humani-T. After seeing picture after picture of their Ferrero Rocher gelato sneak up on my twitter feed, I knew this was a much try. I was not disappointed... it was the perfect amount of sweet to refresh me on the warm afternoon.
Although I only had a quick look around, I really liked the overall atmosphere in the Cafe. I can definitely picture myself with a big scoop of gelato getting cozy in one of their big chairs or lounging on the balcony and working (or reading) over the summer.
As a south end resident, I am highly anticipating their new location on South Park street. I'm looking forward to trying out more of their food and especially the Skor Bar Late. I think this is going to be my new summer hot-spot! -

I feel bad for writing this review, especially since there is so much to like about this cafe in the North End: friendly staff, fun open mic nights, good selection of health food items. BUT. The gelato is terrible. Not only are they all too sweet, but also the texture is just wrong. On a recent visit, there were so many ice crystals in the gelato that it cut up my tongue. I have been in discomfort and have not been able to properly taste food for days!
I hope it was a one time occurrence, but, I'm going to stay clear of the frozen treats. -
Review from Lori M.
So how have I missed stopping at this cafe? And since I have discovered it (waaaayyyy after others have) I have been there twice! I love cafes - I mean love them. I love that they can be so drastically different and still have a charm (and great grub) that isn't repetitive.
I walk in to Humani-T and am met with a section of natural products (skin care, personal care, nutritional supplements). Then some organic food items, then comes.... the cafe!!!
The gelato catches my eye (big surprise!). Holy hell.... I could climb in the freezer and eat myself senseless! Then the baked goods! And the lunch offerings! STOP!!!! Breathe!! and repeat...
Lets talk the natural products for a sec. Great selection, I feel the prices are on par with others places I have visited. My friend who works in a shop with these products (elsewhere in the province) was definitely impressed with the selection. She was going back the next day to pick up some things. The staff were knowledgeable and helpful.
And we are back.... to the cafe. Service was quick. The coffee and tea selections were good and when served was hot (a big plus for me). The samosa and soup was delicious. A big shout out to the curry, sweet potato soup - outstanding! Made my nose run which is a sign of good soup (attractive mental picture).
The cafe is spread over two floors which allow for plenty of seating and a nice touch. It's clean and well visited- looks like plenty of people shop at Humani-T which speaks well of the cafe as there are plenty of options within a short distance.
I'll be back - and probably this Sunday! For this Skor Bar Latte that I just read about! And I suppose something healthy too. -

I've been wanting to pop into Humani-T for moons now. Following them
on twitter is the worst idea if you aren't going to be able to go.
Daily postings of their fresh gelato? Sour cherry? Dark chocolate?
Cantaloupe? Maple bacon? Back up.. maple bacon? Que awesome
imagination here.
The cool part when you go over to the gelato station (yes that is what I call it) is they give you as many samples as you would like before you make the final verdict.
Which, might I add is incredibly hard to do when you have all these
beautiful flavors and colors staring back at you. They even have a
suggestion box where you can hopefully get your flava flav.
I also managed to leave with some peanut butter balls which were
AMAZING. The insides were less compact and more whipped. Super rich
and super ballin'. Ha, get it?
The cool part about this cafe is they also have life entertainment and such in the evening. It's a rather large venue too. Health food products to peanut butter balls. Can't complain about that.
I give Humani-T major props for inspiring creativity and love into
everything they do. The majority of their products have an added
health value. They also do cool things seasonally, aka gingerbread
men. I plan on getting myself back there for some lattes and perhaps a
sandy as those too looked phenominal.
Stay tuned. -

In a trendy North end neighbourhood Humani-T Café is a great fit.
Serving a wonderful array of home made soups, sandwiches, gelato, gluten free baked goods and organic free-trade coffee Humani_T has it all.
They also have a small speciality section of natural, organic health foods which is both good and bad. Good because it is really great products (really brings you back into apothecary times with a selection of teas, herbs, potions, and such) but for the more claustrophobic individual the massive amount of product in a tiny space can be overwhelming.
Personally I hate clutter and being a little on the OCD/Super organizational side of the thought spectrum I tend to zero in on the counter of foodgasm and bypass the shop part of the café altogether.
But since it makes for more interesting conversation let's get back to the foodgasm shall we?
I have NEVER been disappointed with the fare offerings at Humani-T. Whether you are there for a latte, sandwich, baked good or one of their amazing home made gelato flavours you find something that makes you go "mmmm."
I also love the vibe at Humani-T. It's a great place for meeting with a group of friends, co-workers or just hanging out with yourself-because face it, we are all super fun people and don't need others around to have a fabulous time! They have comfy sofas, lots of tables, a great upstairs loft space with more tables and a super cute patio, play great music and have free wi-fi!
We are blessed to have so many great café's in Halifax and Humani-T ranks up there among my most favourite! So what are you waiting for? Hit up the gelato, your taste buds will thank you :) -
Review from Laurie M.
Is it a café? Is it an ice cream parlour? Is it a health food store? Yes, yes and yes. Not what I was expecting. Very little to offer for the vegan minded. One food item and one dessert item from what I could see. The vegan wrap was very good and quite filling. The sorbetini shake was terrible.
I found the service to be quite slow considering I saw at least 5 people behind the counter. I'm sure they'll pick up the pace eventually though. Until then, sorry Humani-T, you only get 2 stars. -

I've been wanting to check out this place for awhile now and finally got the chance today!
Great location in the North End, though the parking lot is kind of dodgy... Or maybe that was just me and my driving skillz...
Either way, great atmosphere, I hunkered down in the upstairs portion to get some serious work done. There was great wireless which is always nice when working remotely.
I totally chickened out of getting the legendary and much recommended skor bar latte and opted for a tea instead. No complaints. A tasty pot indeed.
I decided to indulge in a cinnamon bun. It was kind of dry and not the best ever, but it was served heated and on a plate, so bonus marks for that.
Overall, a pleasant morning. I will be coming back for the gelato. Oh yes. I will be coming back. -

I have struggled with reviewing this cafe for some time. Some aspects of this place deserve a 4 or 5 star review, while others rate only 1 or 2 stars.
Let's start with the good shall we?
First of all - the space and atmosphere is fantastic and worth 5 stars alone. Seating is plentiful with many options from comfy chairs to stools to tables and chairs. Sit by the fireplace or fountain downstairs or head upstairs for more seating. If it's a nice day, even more seating is available on the upstairs patio. Great spot to bring your laptop and get some work done.
They have some good paninis and soups. My favourite is the grilled Brie and tomato panini, sans tomato. It certainly ranks high on the list of my favourite grilled cheese sandwiches. They don't have a huge variety of sandwiches, but you should be able to find something that fits the bill. They have plenty of beverages, including the ever popular Propellor sodas. You're also covered for a post-meal sweet treat, between their selection of baked goods and the many flavours of gelato available on any given day.
The bad:
- Service is inconsistent at best and downright unfriendly or even rude on occasion.
- Other than the one panini, I have never loved anything here - the food is just okay most of the time.
- Probably a personal preference thing, but I don't really like the gelato. It tastes a little... off. And folks? I love me some gelato.
- There are unsuccessful/awkward theme nights or events. Last time I was here for an early evening bite (and trying to get some work done), there was a god-awful improv troupe performing. They were so painfully bad at improv. Each skit required audience participation, and as one of only 2 or 3 people in the cafe, I can assure you the sound of crickets was less awkward and painful than the performances themselves. I had to get up and leave. I am a huge lover of improv, but this was neither the time or the place . I appreciate the concept, but try it later in the evening, maybe? With an improv troupe who can actually pull off improv? Sorry to be such a hater toward the poor people putting themselves out there. I know it's not an easy thing.
So I'll split the difference and go with a 3-star rating. I know a lot of people love this place, and I'll keep coming back out of convenience, but it misses the mark for me.Listed in: 30 Days of Yelp, North End Haunts, Dairylicious

This is the kind of store I want in my 'hood. Organic baking supplies, coffee, prepared food, free wifi, lots of seating, a patio (albeit a mediocre view).
I visited for the first time to try the gelato. The flavours are inventive and beautifully presented. I settled on chai masala in a sugar cone and my companion got the Baccio in a waffle cone. I absolutely adored the flavour of the chai masala, but didn't find the gelato as smooth as I'm accustomed to. My companion was disappointed in her gelato, finding the flavour not intense enough.
Overall, I'd probably try the gelato again for the variety of flavours. -

Okay fine. Who am I to give a café a four-star review upon first impression and then proceed to visit at least once a week ever since? A rude, rude person that's who. And yes, WEEKLY I have dragged their reputation as a beacon of health and nutrition through the mud by ordering Skor Bar Lattés and brie paninis.
Whatever-they're delicious every time and I don't care what you think.Listed in: Vegetarian Bliss, Coffee Shop Stops, Cheap Halifax Lunches, North Enders, Outsourced Workplaces

Now that the summer(ish?) weather is here, I want to spend every, single evening eating Gelato from Humani-T Cafe. I haven't had *amazing* gelato since I was in Europe a few years ago, but I was so pleasantly surprised with Humani-T in the last few weeks, that I've become a bit obsessed.
I love, love, love getting to try all the flavours and the guy who was serving this past week when I visited was awesome! He made some great suggestions, and was so enthusiastic about the sorbetto flavours that my faith in finding yummy dairy-free treats is completely renewed. (Try the apricot. It's insanely delicious. What's even better, is mixing it with the Lemon-Lime. AMAZING.)
Besides the tasty gelato, the vibe in there is hip but relaxed with a hint of granola. A good place to sit and enjoy the view of Agricola and people watch, too.
I also have a lot of respect for the owner (I think it was the owner) who laughed along with me when I described one of the more popular flavours as "handcream, but you know, the kind that would taste good". One of those it-tastes-like-something-you've-smelled-before.
So go and enjoy something tasty!Listed in: Coffee is my life blood, North/West End Haunts

Humani-T Café I want to like you more than I do.
First let me say that this cozy, local place is a great addition to Halifax's North End. The ground floor has some comfy chairs and a sofa as well as a charming electric fireplace in addition to your basic tables and chairs. The upstairs has additional seating which is great if you're meeting up with a group of friends or you have a couple of rambunctious kids with you.
The part that does not warm my heart is the food. The sandwiches are pre-made and wrapped in plastic which turns me off although they are tasty enough when grilled. The soups I've had there were a little thin. Mostly broth based with a sparse spattering of vegetables. And the weirdest thing which may be attributable to my stereotypical expectations of a health food store is that there is no hummus on the menu. Yes, they can open a package of hummus for you which is a bit of a rigmarole. But why no hummus readily available? Like I say, it's a health food store for crying out loud.
They do have many, many favours of gelato. It's not the best gelato I've had and the prices are quite $$$, but good for Humani-T for making homemade desserts. They will even welcome customer suggestions for new flavours.
If you do need to pick up some health food supplies, they have a wide selection of vitamins and supplements as well as lots of dried fruit and nuts.
It's a pleasant, welcoming environment and a great place to pop in for a coffee. For me, this café just needs a bit of fine tuning on the food. -

Ok, so I frequent this place about 3 times a week, and I thought it's time to give it a review.
I will agree with those who gave it a five star rating. My reasoning is as follows:
1) Atmosphere. It's busy, people are ordering food, walking through the isles of fresh bread & dried fruits/nuts. I always liked places that have abit of a buzz - because I can't study in complete silence or I'll die of boredom.
2) Free wi-fi - another important factor for a student who's living on his own and is in study mode for 3/4 of the year.
3) The smell. Whether it's the aroma of fresh baked waffle cones, cinnamon buns, or simmering soups - you might not know what you're smelling, but you know that it smells good.
4) The food. They bake all their pastries upstairs in small batches, so it's always fresh. The paninis and soups are awesome; and last but not least - the Gelato.
It's true, their Gelato is fantastic. It's as authentic as it gets. Lots of flavors - and they have Gelato drinks like affogatos which are great for people who want to experience the coffee + sweet combo.
I'm not a coffee drinker, but apparently they have good coffee too.
My only complaint is that their Gelato isn't cheap, which cuts back on my indulges on this delicious dessert. However, compared to Cows - which charges just as much - it's no comparison. You're getting better quality, and more per scoop
Now that they've built the upstairs patio too, I think I'll come by more than just studying in the summer time. It's a great place to get some cold refreshments with friends and enjoy the view over the Agricola. -
Review from Kim H.
I have only been here a couple of times, but both times I was really impressed. Impressed with the friendly staff, delicious looking food and sunny seating area.
Last time I was here I was offered tastings of two different sorbettos - lime and cilantro and lemon lime and they were both so fresh tasting - like summer in your mouth! You can't help but drool over their selections of gelato and sorbetto - the flavours jump through the glass in technicolor glory, the crushed M&M's and artfully displayed fruit on top making it clear what you are getting. They look so mouth-watering you will want to try one of each. Their coffee is good, too - both times I have gone I have had an iced latte so I can't speak to their hot drinks but my mom - who is a latte snob - approved of their hot latte so that's saying something.
Aside from the food and drink, the natural products store on the other side of the cafe is amazing! I could wander there for hours browsing! There are baskets of tasty nuts, shelves of natural teas with a million different flavours and benefits, natural sugars and other cooking/baking ingredients.
I have to be honest, I find the prices to be a little high, but I don't feel as bad paying a bit more for food I know is fresh, organic, often local, natural and homemade. It's just not a place I could go for lunch every day because I would be broke pretty fast. The great staff definitely makes the prices worth it for me, too.
If you go in summer or on a warm day, make sure you check out the patio! Great place to sit and relax. I love that they have a ton of seating here (upstairs and down) and it's so sunny and bright.
I'm really happy to see a unique and well-managed business in my neighbourhood that makes great, fresh food! Be sure to check them out on Twitter - they post their new gelato flavours and other specials every day, which is nice and convenient. -

I walked into Humani-T Cafe on a whim hoping to find some wine jelly and was immediately drawn to the Gelato counter. So many colours, so many flavours and so fresh! The girl behind the counter immediately came over and before I could even get the words out of my mouth was asking me if I'd be interested in sampling some flavours. I probably tried 10 and liked every single one of them. From Hibiscus, to my new favourite, Persian Rose, this gelato counter showcases everything from your standard Strawberry and Choclolate to Avacado and Ginger!
After my main course of Gelato, I decided to finish off my lunch with a brie Panini.
What an amazaing lunch spot- Java, Lattes, Salads, Paninis in a comfortable cafe which also boasts free wi-fi and health foods all while being fair trade conscious and vegan friendly.
Stop by Humani-T cafe for lunch, and you conscience as well as your taste buds will thank you! -

I fell in love with gelato when I was on a high school trip to Italy, and eventually settled for the fact that I could only get this delicious version of ice-cream on my trips to the Continent. I was so happy to see Humani-T Cafe, in my neighborhood sells gelato! They always have a delicious, wide section with a lot of creative flavours, and are always willing to give out free sample tastes.
I am also a big fan of their soups, while not strictly vegetarian, I try and keep 75% of my meals meat free, so I like knowing that I can go there and get a made from scratch, flavourful, vegan gluten free soup, for a good price.
And after I finish eating, I can stock up on some natural health products, and amazing bread from boulangerie la vendeenne, the next best thing to my favourite bakeries in FranceListed in: The Sweet Spot, Caffeine Central

I had pretty high expectations for Humani-T Cafe. I've been seeing their tweets about gelato and paninis and coffee, and it's been making my mouth water for awhile now. I just had to wait for a nice day with no noon-hour commitments to take a walk up.
I started with a chicken pesto panini while one of my companions had the swiss chicken panini, swiss chocolate latte and a cookie, and the other had the curry chicken wrap and soup. My first bit of disappointment was that my panini wasn't hot all the way through. I was expecting ooey gooey cheese - it was more like cheese slice, and the chicken fell out as a result. But, it was still tasty.
My friend who got the swiss chicken was also disappointed with it, it was a bit dry and the cheese didn't hold hers together either. But she said her cookie was good and the latte was good. My other friend said hers was delicious, but ended up with the wrong soup. She ate it anyway, and said it was delicious.
The best part of the meal was certainly dessert - I had been waiting to taste the gelato for a long time. I tried a couple flavours, but in the end settled for the pina colada sorbetto. What a refreshing taste!
Although there were a few minor disappointments, I'll be back to test out Humani-T again, if only for the gelato. -
Review from Laura P.
Its a fusion of delight. Vegan, vegetarian and gluten free opportunities are tastefully incorporated into Humani-T's lovely Hydrostone home. Homemade soups, gelato, and panini sandwiches are amongst its main features. Humani steps up standard cafe fare with a rich and mindful menu.
Why not couple this high impact taste with Young Street's cultured vibes. This is a fantastic new summer spot to grab a bite! Its health conscious, but knows how to make it rich. In my first visit to the location, I devoured the mango sorbet-- an incredible sunny day treat.
I'll certainly be back to give the rest of the menu a go. Did you know they put gelato in their Chai Lattés? For those with a sweet tooth, they also serve a Skor bar Latté. The All Day Breakfast with BLTs and that jazz will appeal to many. Fruit smoothies, gelato, baked goods, paninis and wraps... its all pretty sweet.
Overall, Humani gives a mindful eye to healthy munching while indulging the taste-buds in full fancy. Well crafted goods and original recipes make this spot a forerunner of summertime haunts. After one visit-- I can't wait until next time.Listed in: Flying Solo

All hail homemade gelato and sorbet!
Everyone bow to this newbie on the North End cafe scene! I was super impressed with this java-joint today when I wandered in to scope out the scene. What I wasn't expecting was a delightful display case filled with in-house made scoopable chilly desserts.
I wanted a coffee until the sweet girl at the counter eagerly offered me gelato sample. Um, yes I want samples. So I opted for a taste of the chocolate mocha gelato while my comrades went with a rose water treat and a lavender goody. Very exciting stuff indeed.
I ended up buying a little cuppy of the lemon sorbet while one of my compatriots went with the vanilla soy gelato (all vegan)! The snacks in the display case were well priced and looked yummy. Glazed croissants and little apple turnovers galore!
The cafe is bright and filled with lots of options for snacks, desserts and bevies. I can't wait to get back for the ultimate test: a soy latte. Super Natural Health's new friend, the Humani-T Cafe, is a great addition to the Hydrostone scene. Shop for health products and enjoy a java at the same time; a perfect marriage indeed. -

The name is awful, but the atmosphere is hard to beat. Formerly the Almond Cafe, the Humani-T is a very socially conscious cafe located in Super Natural Health Products in Halifax's North End.
I stopped in here last week on the advice of a friend looking for a coffee fix and some lunch. I found both and some desert to boot!
The coffee in this cafe is great and rivals many other top spots in the city and the food tastes great. I had the Turkey, Pesto & Avocado Panini and it was absolutely delicious. It may have been one of the best Paninis I've had in the city.
After lunch we decided to have a little gelato. The Humani-T web site declares the Mango Peach sorbet to be "Out of this world." While that might be a slight over statement, it's definitely delicious and worth trying.
The Humani-T has a friendly staff, free wi-fi, tasty treats and a silly name. The pros definitely outweigh the cons. Stop in Super Natural Health Products the next time you're in the north end and enjoy this hidden gem!Listed in: Classy Caffeination

Humani-T Cafe is a new little spot on Young that specializes in fair trade organic coffee, panini's, loose tea, and gluten free/veg soups!
I popped in to try the tea and it was just the push I needed to bike back to the South End.
I'll definitely be back to try the paninis! -

I visit this cafe whenever my best friend is in town as she has an out of control addiction for gelato. This place does it justice. The gelato comes in a variety of flavors which are unique and freshly made. They change the flavors quite often and have a few flavors regularly. They encourage you to try out as many flavors as you want before you decide. I like the decor too, it's warm and inviting. You should definitely check it out!
