Review from Adam C.
Waterloo, ON
I've lived in Waterloo for a few years now and have eaten at many paces. Outside of sushi or Asian cuisine, the Huether is generally my choice place to eat. The important thing to remember about the Huether is that its actually 2 restaurants, the barley works upstairs the lions restaurant downstairs. On the main level there is a cafe and the Kent's lounge (usually used by the Waterloo Jazz society and for large reservations) The patio is the best in the uptown! A summer must.
In the Barley Works, the schnitzel is one of my favourite dishes, I'd probably also recommend the mussels or flatbread. The beer is fairly strong, the Wuertzberger is my personal choice, though the honey brown and Adlys are quite good as well. The barley works is always a good time, it has high ceilings and great variety in seating be it billiards, patio, bar, loft, other seating etc.
The lion's restaurant downstairs is rather charming but it does have a bit of a basement feel, the calamari is a must down there.
The cafe is pretty standard and has a very relaxed feel, it has free wireless that is fast enough for networking and research. They do a very good job with their smoothies and their biscotti is top notch! The coffee's a bit disappointing since it's Seattle's best (Subway coffee), but it's always freshly brewed and in all honesty only die hard coffee snobs'll make a real complaint.
The service can be a bit backlogged at times, I mean the place is a labyrinth of stairs and secret chambers. If you're in a rush just call ahead and pre-order, If you're in a serious rush you should probably stick to microwaved dinners and fast food, Generally the service is comparable to anywhere else in the uptown. -

Had another great time here. We are very happy that the patio is now non smoking! We just love the food and the micro brewery. Keep up the good work.

Review from Teena D.
I had a pre-retirement seminar to conduct in Waterloo this afternoon. Afterwards, my colleague and I had a meeting with the plan sponsor.
He and I met downtown, not far from the client's site, for lunch. We figured we could find a restaurant, no problem. Well, there was a problem as there didn't seem to be a lot of restaurants downtown where we could sit for a while and have a bite to eat.
After parking our cars and walking around, we ended up at a restaurant at the Huether Hotel on King Street N. It's in the basement and seemed very closed in with its low ceilings. It's in what looks like an old historic building.
We had about an hour to order and eat before we had to head out so we looked at the menu and ordered quickly. I ordered a burger and fries. It was okay, nothing great. The burger was fairly and I ate it all so just had a couple fries.
Steve ordered some kind of schnitzel. He said it was okay. He said the potatoes were probably good yesterday when they were made. Ouch!
It had taken a while for our food to arrive so we paid as soon as we got it so we could leave when we were ready to go.
I bet it's a great spot to spend a Friday night with some beer but not for a midday work lunch. -

This was one of my favourite hangouts in undergrad! Very calm and pub-like atmosphere. The honey brown beer is a must try!
