And then I was back.
Once upon a time downtown Hudsons was our crews' local pub where everyone knew our names. We used to spend nearly every Friday or Saturday there for almost a year. Service was exceptionally prompt and staff was especially great possibly because we had all become pretty friendly with each other.
But having gone back this past Saturday for a proper Hudsons-downtown-outing since our 2009/2010 Hudsons binge, was definitely reminiscent of our earlier days. Though the crowd and staff weren't recognizable, the barkeeps were quick to attend to new patrons looking for drinks and the music was a good mix of Top 40 and old school hits.
Unlike Druid or Pint, the dance floor doesn't get quite as warm so you're not as much of a sweaty mess afterwards. And on this night, the dance floor was surprisingly busy and the crowd was the typical mix of downtown students and young professionals. Historically there usually aren't a lot of Jersey Shore delta bravos that frequent this bar but for some reason a small handful of them turned up on Saturday.
Either way, it was a fun nostalgic experience for us as we remembered the good old days at this bar. I'd say it's definitely a great time IF it's busy and if it is, the crowd is typically pretty friendly -

Is it a pub? Is it a club? Is it a restaurant? Is it all three?
On a Saturday night for a birthday party, the atmosphere worked out pretty well and the service was very attentive - our server made sure I never had an empty glass, and asked me if I wanted food when she saw I was looking at the food menu. They also had no problem with billing everybody in our large party separately - which can be a problem for many restaurants. Our party almost became too big for the room. When we had added a table to our already long table, our server commented that we couldn't do so due to potential for fire hazards, but we decided to turn the additional table around, enabling there to be a fire lane if necessary (compromise!).
The manager also gave us a $30 gift certificate, which we then promptly spent on more shots for the table.
I also greatly enjoyed Hudson's Timberhead Pilsner, which is brewed by Big Rock, but tasted smoother and richer than any other Big Rock beer I've tasted. I wouldn't go out of my way for it, but if you're at Hudson's anyway, it's worth trying.
The food itself was decent - I ordered a "drunken" grilled ham and cheese sandwich, which came with a side caesar salad. And while small, the sandwich was loaded with cheese and I enjoyed the beer-soaked caramelized onions. It's a bit pricy for lunch at $12.50, but good if you're there anyway for a party. I also shared some dry ribs, which weren't spectacular, but much better than those I've had at Elephant and Castle.
At 10PM, just as we were leaving, the place turned into more of a club. A "DJ" was selecting from a number of top 40 hits as women on what looked like a "girl's night out" started dancing up a storm. Earlier in the night, the music was a bit more subdued, playing Broken Bells and Foster the People, rather than the LMFAO and Britney Spears as the night went on.
And unlike most clubs, the washrooms here were very clean at about 9PM.
For a birthday party for 20-30 people from 7-10 PM on a Saturday, this worked well as a venue. But I probably would not come here to eat or drink on my own, especially when Brewster's is just down the street. -

Ugh. Beautiful room, predictably good service, nice and frosty beer (albeit a massively pedestrian offering) - but honest to god, the food sucks. I like the location, the crowd, the suds and the staff, but wow. Your food sucks. Hard. I've NEVER had anything there above sub-average. Hate to say it, but Boston Pizza's food is better, and that's saying something.
Hudson's - if you get control of your food like Brewster's did a few years ago - you'd be unstoppable. Your atmosphere is so much better than Brewster's - but your food is awful in comparison. -

I've been to this Hudsons maybe a dozen times (or less) over the past few years for different types of gatherings - usually dancey dance birthday parties or after an ESSC game for free wings. In all honestly, I'd never gone to this or any other Hudsons specifically for a meal until this week. We had gotten a $25 gift certificate from ESSC that was about to expire. Can't waste free food!
My review for this specific experience: Went on a Monday right after work. It wasn't busy. Confusing combo of sports on TV and Lady gaga et al on the speakers. Our waitress was good, professional if not anything else. I didn't really want anything on the menu, but I got the guacamole bacon burger. The first half was alright. No real distinct flavours, everything just kind of blending together. Once I got into the second half, I became overwhelmed with some sort of sickly sweet orange sauce on it that just made me totally nauseated. I couldn't finish it. My side caeser was fine, but hardly had any dressing on it.
I don't really like Hudsons as a place to go out dancing because they play all the same Top 40/mash up crap that every other place plays. The dance floor is pretty small and it gets crowded and hot. it's awkward walking through the jungle of tall chairs, too.
They have a few of the good, mainstream Canadian beers available. Since this location isn't right in the downtown core, I can't see myself going here for drinks after work or anything like that.
If you're in the area, head to Brewsters down the street for much better food and beer! -

I like Hudsons if you are trying to find some place where you can just hang out, order some good food if you want, and drink in a casual atmosphere. You always know that it will be somewhat popular because of the location and is a great starting off point if you plan to go somewhere else later in the night.
I am addicted to their salt and pepper wings. It's the only place so far where I have found the seasoning to a) actually stick to the wings and b) not be overloaded with pepper. When it is wing night on Wednesday's watch out because this place gets PACKED. They have the typical wing night rules where you have to order one drink per basket of wings, but it doesn't have to be alcohol which is nice to not be pressured into getting drunk on a Wednesday! -

I used to frequent Hudson's almost weekly, as I played on an Edmonton Sport and Social Club team and we would go there after our games. For every two ESSC members, you are given a free order of wings when you show your membership cards, so we'd grab a beer and free wings after our games.
I don't play in ESSC anymore so I don't go there very often, but my wife and I went today as we had a gift certificate. I had the Maple BBQ burger with fries and my wife had the avocado burger with caesar salad.
My burger wasn't bad, it was big and juicy and basically just splattered with their maple barbecue sauce. Not a real culinary masterpiece, but pretty much what I expected. My wife's burger had feta, bacon, onions, tomato and avocado on it and it just tasted off. Maybe it was just the combination of toppings, but I wasn't a fan of it at all.
There's a lot of Canadiana on the walls, but to the point of being really cheesy. It's trying a bit too hard to be Canadian.
I definitely avoid Hudson's on the weekend as dancing to Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" isn't really my thing.
It seems like I only really only go there when I get food for free or nearly free, so take that for what it's worth! -

This place falls in the chain like pub/restaraunt experience that you can find anywhere.
As a bar it is very basic in what it offers, however they now have a new Canadian craft brewery menu which is nice.
As a restaurant it is pub food which is average and truthfully a little pricey for what it is. A 12.00 burger needs to be better than what they offer. The daily happy hour special brings the prices down to an acceptable level, but of course you don't get much of a selection.
In all there are better places to go within walking distance that are a little more unique and inspiring. -

Wooden floors and old Canadian sports memorabilia on the walls makes this a great location to watch the game with some friends with a few pints.
Visited this downtown location of one of Edmonton's favourites for wings and a beer after work. Wing Wednesday meant a cheap cheap dinner! A pretty good selection of flavours to choose from, and drinks are on special here for Happy Hour every night, too.
Service was pretty quick, even when the game started and the place started to pick up. Would visit again for a fun, casual night out with friends. -

I am familiar with Hudsons Tap House as a watering hole. I was not familiar with it as a place to dine. I had an event to go to just a few blocks away and decided to check it out for an early supper.
The place has the atmosphere of a pub - dark, lots of counter stools, and a large bar in the middle of the floor. Classic rock and 80s music played overhead, and several monitors showed different sports events.
I picked up the menu with some trepidation, which was quickly relieved when I saw the variety of food. Lots of burgers, appetizers, and entrees like steak, roast beef, and mushroom chicken.
I decided on the steak sandwich with fries, and I added a side of garlic mushrooms. I like my steak done well and while it took a little longer than expected, it was a perfect piece of Angus beef.
My friend had the beef dip. Thick chunks of beef were piled on a baguette with cheese. He also added mushrooms to his sandwich. He was happy.
The fries were plentiful and average, with some sweet and spicy seasoning on them.
Neither of us are drinkers, so we did not sample anything on tap. However, there seemed to be a good variety of beers.
Service was very friendly and attentive. I will definitely be back. -

We went here on a Saturday afternoon, we walked in at 1:52 pm. The waitress said we had just missed the steak sandwich special, but when we got our menus it said that it ended at 2pm. My watch said 1:58. Also there were no drink specials because it was a "bar night".
We both ended up getting their version of the club sandwich. Every club that we have ever had has been in the traditional club way, with the 3 pieces of bread and cut into triangles. Not at Hudson's, there club is designed to throw all the ingredients on a sub type bun and get it out of the kitchen asap. My girlfriend said she had better club's at a bowling ally's.
The pints of beer were really over priced. $6.25 for domestic, $6.75 for micro brewed, and $7.75 for imported. We got a pint Sleeman Honey brown and she got a Big Rock.
After our first sip I said to her something doesn't taste right. We drink both these brands at home and on tap when we go out. I tasted hers and it was the same way, they both tasted watered down. Also my beer wasn't very cold.
We didn't stay for another round. Also they were still playing country music which I didn't care for either. -

If you haven't notice already my friends and I love going out for food. only thing we love to do. Another one of our most favorite places to get together is Hudson's Canadian Tap House (we usually go to the one on Oliver Square). The last time I went Curtis ordered the Maple BBQ burger (with bison instead of beef), this is his favorite thing to order when he goes there (he does love his bison burgers). I ordered the Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich. I thought my dish was pretty good even though it was a little messy. We also got the Caesar salad instead of fries but it was a little disappointing (we've had been). Curtis had a beer and I got a balini, which was very yummy!
The place was packed with people because there was a hockey game on. But even though the place pumping with "hip" music and busy with guys cheering our server did a really great job taking care of us and seeing if we needed anything.
The cost of the meal was, again, average; for the two of us it was about $40-45. -

This Hudson's is like all the other ones in the city, but the problem with this one is that it is out of the way which makes it really annoying if you go here and there is a huge line (which there usually is on weekends) or you don't get in (because they don't like a certain brand of clothing).
Unlike the Whyte Ave Hudson's, where you can just walk to a different bar, the downtown one you have to get in your car or get a cab and go else where. If you do get inside you realize that it isn't at all worth the trouble.
If you have to go then go early to ensure you're not wasting your time. -

I was bored on a Saturday night and wanted to go somewhere close to home where they served food so I made my way to Hudson's. I hadn't been to this location before so I thought I'd give it a go.
It was pretty early in the evening so it wasn't too busy. There are sort of two sections. The main area was quite populated so I went to the back section where it was a bit quieter - until a birthday party showed up, but they weren't too bad.
I ordered the mushroom chicken which tasted pretty good and a Heineken. The waitress was really nice. I'm not used to being treated that way by anyone when I go out - especially alone - so that was a great surprise.
I wasn't a big fan of the country music they started playing since the CFR was in town.
I was disappointed that they changed the rules on my discount card that I got through the Edmonton Sport and Social Club. It used to be 10% off. Now it's free wings as long as at least two people are dining or something equally useless to me. -

I usually really enjoy my experiences at Hudson's. However, my last couple of experiences at this particular Hudson's, have been less than wonderful.
We went here on a Monday night (a few girlfriends and myself), and I felt like a piece of meat! There guy to girl ratio was about 10:1 and it was really uncomfortable.
We also came to this Hudson's for my friend's birthday. It was packed! The crowd is very urban business, trendy young people. The night was going well, our server was great, but they wouldn't let another group of our friends in because one of them was wearing a certain brand of t-shirt (and no, it wasn't Ed Hardy). It was upsetting because it really ruined the whole party for everyone.
I have to say that this location has insane line ups at times, and it is really not worth the wait. At all.
If you want to go to a Hudson's, go to Whyte Ave! -

Well I think it's just like any other sort of upscale kind of place, if you want to call it that. It's located very close to where I live on the outskirts of what you consider downtown.
I ordered the 10 oz striploin with added onion strings and a few Sleeman Honey Browns. I ordered the steak medium rare. So when I finally received my dinner, the steak was cold and cooked somewhat medium. I asked the waitress to take it back. So she ended up giving me the remainder of my meal while I wait for the steak, which I have never seen before. Must be an Edmonton thing. The manager comes out with my newly cooked warm steak. It still wasn't medium rare but it was softer and a bit juicier than the other steak. I guess they need to fire the line cook because it's obvious he/she doesn't know how to cool a steak. Anyway my meal ended up being on the house and all I had to pay for were the drinks. Despite that experience, maybe I'll go back and see what else there is to order and possibly will upgrade the rating. -

I've always avoided the Hudson's on Whyte Ave. Not because it's not a fun place to have a few pints, but because it gets a bit to busy and rowdy for my liking. Fifteen years ago I would have waited in the big lines to get into the bar everyone wanted to be, especially on a Friday night of big game during the playoffs. But I've gotten a little tired of that scene. I don't like to scream at the top of my lungs to be heard or deal with elbows in the back every 30 seconds. Hudson's is also quite a testosterone-filled place after 10 p.m. on a Saturday night, and I don't really enjoy a group of male egos under the influence of too many cold ones, especially when hockey or football are involved. So, when I saw that a Hudson's opened up closer to my neck of the woods, on 104 St. I was interested to see what it would be like. Lucky for me, it was more tame. Nice wooden booths, high stool tables, classier space. It still fills up on a game night, but if you want to have a couple of pints with a appetizer and relax on a Wednesday night, it's not overcrowded and the lighting is dim and ambiance is more chill.

So, no teachers convention today and I was at my favorite sausage party place for lunch. I like to observe pretty ladies at lunch but I always find this place to be a sort of men's club or something. I'm not lying when I saw a row against the windows full of balding men, no fault of their own for their shortcoming. So I frequent this place as it works for me for lunch. I usually order their steak sandwich special at lunch. oh yeahhh. It seems that my work wife always gets a bigger piece than me. oh well! I love love their buffalo burger. Maybe its in my heritage lol. So today I had boneless chicken wings with sweet chili sauce. Oh yeah. Very yummy in my tummy. Julie Gulie served me and she was very sweet. She didn't try to use her sexuality and fake flirting for tips, just gave us great service. I was impressed the bartender knows my favorite non alcoholic drink of cranberry and Just a little 7up, just a little! There is lots that don't like this place, but it serves me well. Even though they forgot my order and i didn't get it until 115pm, they at least gave us a coupon for our next visit. Did I care when I got back to work, hahaha but blame on the teachers!! GO Hudsons. and great that they promote their staff as the bartender is the manager guy there now.
