This review is only for their weekend lunch specials.

The Skinny: Great fried doughnuts, fresh soy bean milk and tasty dumplings are a real treat (3.75), Service is solid (3), Value - it's reasonable (3).

In the 'Peg, this is the place to get your Northern Chinese styled dim sum - namely fried doughnuts, fresh soy bean milk and xiao long bao.

The fried doughnuts - crispy, salty, light, fluffy - they go so well with the warm fresh soy bean milk ( you can get it sweet or salty - I usually go with the sweet).

The dumplings here are the best in town (other than my dad's but their a pain in the butt to make). You can get them pan-fried or boiled - both are pretty good. The xiao long bao are made in the restaurant. They are good - I'd say a 3-kind of good - but they are still the best show in town for these Asian treats.

Just a bit of a disclaimer - this review was written by someone travelling through Winnipeg for a day.

Huang Pu is a delightful Shanghai-ese restaurant near the University of Manitoba.  As a sidenote, Huang Pu is the main river that runs through Shanghai, also known as Whampoa.

Two of us went for dinner at around 9pm, and while the place was deserted, the owner was very warm and friendly.  It's basically a mom-and-pop run restaurant, with the mom doing the waitressing and hosting, and the dad in the back cooking.

We were offered the "Chinese" and "Canadian" menus.  We definitely decided to go with the authentic Chinese/Shanghaiese cuisine, and the owner suggested three dishes.

We got the "Cao Liao" Fish, which turned out to be a wonderful fish dish with a sour and rice wine sauce, considered to be a family style Shanghai dish.  We also got the Oven-baked Salted Chicken, which turned out to be less authentic but still yummy.  Also excellent were the Shanghai style stir-fried green beans.

If you're looking for authentic Shanghai cuisine close to the University of Manitoba, definitely consider stopping by Huang Pu Restaurant!  (The owner travels once in a while to Shanghai, so call before going.)
