Really good food. The fried dumplings and shrimp fried rice was great though the shrimp pieces were small. But great customer service and friendly atmosphere

I tried, I really tried. Tiny little baby tears were rolling down my face as I was leaving this restaurant, for I couldn't believe how awful the service was. This may actually have been the worst service I've ever had in Chinatown. I really don't want to go into detail as it is slowly breaking my heart but I've signed up for yelp and have a duty to my fellow yelpers to proliferate this truth :'(.

The moment the waiter realizes we're not native Chinese speaker was the moment he became unenthusiastic to serve us. In fact, I think he went a little out of his way to make our dining experience uncomfortable. After being a smidge pushy to get our orders, he swooped to take all of the chopsticks off of the table as if since we're American, we're incapable of using chopsticks. Well fuck you sir. I was born Vietnamese and in Vietnam, we most definitely use chopsticks. Anyways, the food sucked. Small unfulfilling portions and the meat they served was just fat. The roast pork was pretty good but it wasn't hitting my G-Spot or anything. The restaurant wasn't getting packed and he was in a rush for us to leave, and I could've left giving this place an average 3 stars UNTIL he over charged us. My order went from 5.25 to 7.25. In fact all of our orders went up by several dollars except for surprise surprise, my friend who spoke Chinese. Could be a coincidence really OR IT COULD'VE BEEN RACISM. lol I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and just say it's a coincidence. Overall, it makes me sad every time I see a restaurant close down because you start to wonder about all of the people affected but this restaurant should close down.

I spoke to the real manager of this restaurant. He was nice enough to acknowledge my bad experience and offered to make it up to me by offering Scallion chicken on the house this week-end. An updated review will be posted after that takes place. I also brought to his notice how there are others complaining about the staff's bad attitude on Yelp and he sounded like he was going to make amendments. Hopefully, I wont have to read about someone leaving this restaurant in tears.

3 stars for the food. 1 star for the service.

Seafood chow mein was standard. I preferred the noodles to be a bit softer though and the portion size, although a bit small, was enough to feed two people. Pricey though at $12 for that size. The fried soft shell crab was seasoned with salt, pepper, onions and chillies. It was good, but a bit salty for me.

Our waiter really killed the experience. The waiter did the bare minimum of taking our order and giving us our food (like in most Chinese restaurants). The bill comes and it is around $23. When I was paying the bill, I was thinking of putting the tip with it, but at the last minute changed my mind and took the extra money off so I could get change and put the tip on the table instead. So I put down $25.  The waiter comes by and starts speaking to me in a low voice in Mandarin about how I'm not putting enough tip down and I need to put down a few more dollars. He was lecturing about standard tipping percentages.

(Umm yeah...seriously dude, first I don't understand Mandarin, and I spoke to you in Cantonese earlier, wtf is up with the switch up? Afraid the boss will hear?)

After I told him I don't speak Mandarin, he switched to Cantonese and told me the same thing. I shut him up when I told him I was putting tip on the table instead of the bill. He honestly didn't deserve anything at that point.

The whole situation really irked me. Tip is not mandatory and is based on service. That was one shady/greedy waiter.

Definitely won't be coming back or recommending this place to anyone.

The service at this place was horrible. They sat us and then without asking, had us share the table with random strangers. Come on! at least ask. It was pretty darn awkward but oh well. To top it off the staff was really inattentive. The food was okay but it was pretty price for what was served. The portions were tiny and to tell you the truth,...it wasn't all that. I've had much better for the price. I would recommend trying somewhere else in the vicinity.

I was torn for a while if I should review this joint.

On the one hand, my fellow Yelpers deserve to know about their beautifully tender, perfectly glazed (but not too sweet), and savory savory savory roast pork. On the other hand if this place becomes overrun with Middle American tourists sporting fannypacks and scrunchies and teenagers whining for sweet and sour chicken......

Their roast pork over rice is perfect (ask for a fried egg on top!!). Better than Wing Wong. Better than Big Wong King. Better than any of the other 99 roast animal joints in Chinatown. Better than any other char siu I've ever had in MY LIFE (half of which was spent in Asia, right next to Hong Kong). Hoy Wong made me a believer, a lover, a fanatic for char siu.

To be honest, I haven't tried many of their other dishes. Their roast pork on rice is all I need. I've sampled the roast duck and roast pig (this is different from roast pork, it has a crispy and less glazed/seasoned skin). Both were tasty but not nearly as mind-blowing, life-altering, paradigm shift causing as their roast pork.

So really, just get their roast pork. It's 5 bucks plus change, and bonus, the waiters are all super sweet and never treat you like crap (Big Wong King and your waitresses, I'm looking at you).

"And on the Seventh Day, before God rested...He made Chinese people and asked them to build Hoy Wong."

Okay, so maybe it REALLY didn't exactly happen like that in the big book; maybe that's hovering my foot over that invisible line that we all love to cross every now and then.  BUT!  I can tell you that this was really a heavenly experience from beginning to end.  Another bookmark destroyed!  This place is the Alpha and Omega of what is defined as REAL Chinese food.

No...I'm not talking about that saucey, MSG-loaded, overly riced dish that you ask to be wrapped up because it's impossible to finish.  It could usually feed a small family of 4 that one dish right?  No...not here.

You will experience friendly Chin-glish staff, that is more than happy to fill your tea cup and take your order.  You see that Peking Duck in the window?  In my stomach.  Chicken and broccoli?  Oh yeah...that too.  When you ask for steamed rice on the side, it's a true human sized portion.  Use the chopsticks you animal; no matter how starving you are.  Fight the temptation and eat it the right way; by struggling to use those glossy sticks.

Savor the natural tastes that are rolling over your tongue and rub that Buddha belly on the way out; not the manager...rub your own...sicko.

Hoy Wong dishes up your typical Chinatown fare in your typical Chinatown categories.

The roast pork, which everyone seems to be crazy about, was good, but not outstanding (two places I've been to recently that offer roast pork that's just as good are Noodle King in Chinatown and Hsin Wong in midtown). The roast duck was too boney and difficult to eat to really enjoy.

I also tried a couple other dishes, including the braised noodles with chicken in oyster sauce and the beef with crispy noodles. The noodles with oyster sauce were okay, but I liked the crispy noodle dish a lot - as the meal went on the sauce from the beef gradually softened the noodles, imparting two different and awesome textures, often in one bite.

The only thing that struck me as out of place is that most of the prices on the menu were expensive by Chinatown standards. There's nothing wrong with paying $8-$12 for a meal, but considering what it costs down the block I was sort of put off. Since I'm a cheap bastard I ordered the least expensive items - that were on par with what they would cost at most other places - but in doing so my options were fairly limited.

I had a good meal, but it was no better or worse than those I've had at most places in Chinatown. Bonus points for hanging roasted meat in the window. It was like a siren's call.

This is based solely on the roast pork on white rice. Everyone on here is raving about how amazing it is, so I went to check it out.

The quality of the pork is good, so no complaints on that and I've certainly had much worse. The failure in the dish is the light sauce is way over salted which overtakes the pork and rice. I could barely eat it at all.

I accept that it might have been a fluke, but you'd be safer getting roast pork at Big Wing Wong, Wing Huang, Hsin Wong, or J.M. Family Noodle in my opinion.

Yummy, yummy for my tummy.  I love the fatty roast pork there.  So delicious.  The caramelized burnt ends are the best.  I love to eat that pork with lots of that special soy sauce they pour over the rice.  Make sure you order a fried egg with your meal.  It's just sould warming food.

The workers there are super nice and very helpful.  Ask for the house soup with your meal.  There is no charge for it.

The boyfriend & I had planned to have dinner in Chinatown so I Yelp'ed ahead & we decided to give Hoy Wong a try.  On first impression, the physical entity of the restaurant & its name did not match @ all.  Well never mind that.  As long as the food matches the Yelp ratings I'm cool.

I ordered a Roast duck with rice.  Consistent with many previous reviews the duck was tender & flavorful; unfortunately I bit into a pocket of salt @ one point.  The rice was a tad over cooked but its texture, flavor & fragrance definitely reminded me of when I was a kid.

The other half got a Roast pork with rice.  He thought the port was a little over cooked, a little too salty, & the skin was not crispy enough.

We also shared a Watercress with bean cake sauce which had too much ginger & not enough bean cake.  Other than being very hot & freshly cooked, we were totally underwhelmed.

Being the New Yorker in our relationship, the boyfriend shared with me that our meal was actually pretty good by local standards.  However, we both agreed that it was not anywhere near the best we've had before.  The service was good but the place was kind of dirty.  I think that next time we head to Chinatown, we will need to do more research or just not eat here period.

Hoy Wong is waaay better than any of the other "Wongs" in c-town. Friendly staff, clean, and the best part is the freshly made soup every day.

It's small so you can really only go w/ a group up to 6, but I've never had any issues grabbing a seat. It's mostly eat and go, and it hits the spot for a great price.

Hoy Wong is a classic for carry out of roast pork, pig, boiled and soy chicken.  You can also get great deals on fried rice, bok choy, and noodle dishes.  It is a great bargain.  Would I ever eat here in the restaurant--it has never occurred to me.  That would be like eating in the deli section of Zabar's.  Get here early on the weekends for the best cuts of meat!

Bone? No Bone? Bone? No Bone?....After a 6 minutes of this, I finally successfully completed my order of a bone-IN chicken dish, duck chow-fun and some fried bean curd. All was flavorful, perfectly cooked and cheap: A  clean and authentic, english deprived hole. Loved it.

I will never go to this place again.  I had the seafood rice combintation and my friend had the pineapple duck.  Mine was completely taste-less, with barely unfrozen shrimp and squid that took about 10 minutes to chew.  My friend's duck was overcooked and he spent most of the time spitting out bones.  The steamed dumplings were basic, nothing special.

The kicker though is that the bill should have been $18, and he planted the check down with a $30 total.  When we questioned him, he lowered it to $25.  There was a random, unexplained $4 charge, which he said was for the tea. We had never asked for tea, and everyone knows that tea is served in restaurants all over Chinatown with no charge.  He lowered the bill to $23 and left it at that.  I don't think anyone appreciates being screwed over like this.  If you go, make sure you check the bill.

Hoy Wong is my favorite restaurant in Chinatown for BBQ meats and the new hotness, which is folded buns.   It is a basement location, underneath a shop that you cannot miss called "Beauty." The service is fast, and the waiters are sweet.  I have seen them busy on occasion, but they are never slammed because the tourists have yet to find them.  This is also one of the cleanest "older" establishments in the area.  And, you will not have to share a table.

This is my favorite place in NYC to go for roast duck, and it has been consistent for the last 9 years I have been visiting.  No fills here, just delicious cheap eats of seasonal items and meats.  Their only drawback is that they are not known for their seafood, but that does not mean that it is not served.  I come here only craving their meat and vegetable dishes, however their seafood is awesome and should be had.

They have Gai Lan (chinese brocolli) $6.95, and you can ask for Ong Choy or other vegetables not on the menu.  The roast duck is the bomb and is served with scallion, hoisen sauce, and folded steamed buns for $12.95.

    Cash only.

This is as good as it gets!

The best Chinese food in New York! It's a small restaurant, but don't feel skeptical to go in... because then you'll miss out on really good Chinese food, and will probably wander into a MSG-packed restaurant somewhere else in Chinatown. And that's not cool.

Hoy Wong will always be the place for my pan fried noodles weekly fix. Definitely try the roast pork over rice. Try flirting with the owner, the man who cuts the pork and duck hanging in the front, and maybe you'll get a discount on the roast pork! :D

Yummy roast pork. As per the recommendations of the other Yelpers, I ordered the roast pork on rice plate. It was served with a little bit of steamed bok choy on the side. The roast pork was chewy and so flavorful. The only downside is the portion size. I would have wanted more pork and less rice. I did overhear the man behind me order the roast pork and duck combo with no rice so I think that is what I will do next. There are still so many Chinatown establishments to try but this was definitely a yummy option in the roast pork arena! Last week was bun and dumpling week, this week I need to lay off the carbs and transition to the roast meat options in Chinatown!

I had peking duck and roasted pork. The roasted pork is INSANELY good. INSANELY. It's sweet, slightly crispy, and super juicy. Love it. It's the best I've had outside of China. I love this place.  It has the best authentic chinese food ever!  Speaking of affordable steak, memorable deep fried soft-shell crabs, cantonese style steamed/sauteed lobster with ginger and scallion and the works, yummy pork chops with rich delicious sticky sweet sauce, I was just speechlessly in heaven.  I have to say this is great for vegetarians, too. There are chinese broccoli, choy sum, and tons of different mushrooms(noki, chinese black traditional, thin stalk, button) and also tofu options.

I asked for sauce and the lady told us how they don't serve the usual little container of sauce on the side because they infuse it into the duck when they cook it. Money saving tactic? Nonetheless it does has great salty flavor (lots of fatty sauce on the bottom) and at $8.50 for half, its my go-to restaurant for duck. And only duck.
