Boasting a $600,000 reno, you can tell the Howard Johnson Express spared no expense the minute you walk through the door.

Hat Tricks bar is gorgeous. A dark, cozy space with plenty of warm wood slat walls, soft oval tables and plush, cushioned seating. No matter where you sit you'll be able to watch the game from no less than three to five flatscreen televisions...even if you visit the bathroom!

A recently updated menu boasts some impressive stats including a fully loaded mountain of nachos and Winnipeg's hottest wings which range from the ridiculously hot to the table smacking, sweat inducing, sour cream guzzling, gut busting phoenix.

But the burgers are where my eye's bugged out of my head. Move over Blondies, HoJo's has a 1.75 lb Big Buff. Meant to be shared, the menu says it serves two. But with a heaping helping of fries and scrumptious battered potato discs, it could easily serve four.

This colossus came capped with no less than seven tomato slices, onions, relish, a cup of marble cheese and an eight-slice bacon weave. Yeah. You had me at bacon weave.

nexplicably served on a vegan, whole wheat sourdough from Tallgrass Prairie Bakery. Whether its the appearance of propriety, a simple strategy of finding a robust enough vehicle, or adding dietary fibre, I'd rather have seen a plain old white bread bun (loaf?).

Given the digestive challenge this bad boy already presents, the what bun was overkill, and steps at calorie control are pointless when you're eating at this level of decadence.

As such I'd also like to see the extra lean ground beef replaced with lean or even regular, and a little filler would go along way.

The patty was a little dry and if you make it beyond your first quarter, you'll find yourself chewing more than would ordinarily be needed.

But the seasonings were great and given that I put away all but a few bites of this bad boy, I didn't find it gave me heart burn or indigestion.

Great hotel. This review might be slightly biased, since I booked online for 3 nights at the price of $59 per night. (The regular rate is $79 for a standard room). In addition, when I arrived, it turned out that they had no standard rooms left. I was given a suite, which was huge for one person to stay in. Two beds, a ton of floor space, microwave, refrigerator, the works.

Speaking objectively, this hotel is on the Winnipeg city limits, which makes the drive times to destinations a little longer, but it's nothing ridiculous. Very clean, has a sauna and restaurant attached, and ample parking, even for large vehicles. I drove a large (30 ft long) company van, which fit in the parking lot with no issue.

The only thing that stops this place from getting 5 stars is the fact that the attached pub can get a little loud on Friday/Saturday nights.
