One of the best Soondooboo  in town. I should perhaps say around town since they have two locations - Burnaby (North Road) and Richmond. Soondooboo is a hot and spicy Korean stew made with tofu, vegetables, mushrooms, onions, scallions and chili powder. It is a popular item in Korean restaurants and is truly comforting because of it is served piping hot with a raw egg and also side bowl of rice.

However, superior tofu soup is hard to come by in the Lower Mainland. Some restaurants make them either too watery or cheap out on the ingredients. This is crucial because a lot of the flavours comes from the tiny shrimps and veggies.

House of Tofu Soup offers a few choices of seafood, pork, beef, chicken, kimchi, dumpling or mushroom. You can select the level of fire of hot, regular, mild or white (non-spicy). What is special about this place is that their serve the bowl of rice on a stone bowl - the heat from the stone bowl creates crispy rice along the side.

The traditional way to conquer the rice is to add tea into the crispy rice to soften them up and then eat. Myself I like to scrape the crispy rice and dip into the left over spicy tofu soup - To each their own.

Common to all Korean restaurants, delicious side dishes are served: kimchi, marinated potatoes, bean sprouts, seaweed, radish, etc. etc.

The prices are extremely reasonable and you will find yourself satisfied with yummy goodness.  Be warned that the North Road location is located in a very very tiny "mall" that only offers at most 5 parking stalls shared with the Korean hair salon next door.

The misty, secretive windows are a little shady at first but I figured it's probably because it's trying to keep all the wonderful goodness hidden inside this place. I've never been to the House of Tofu Soup in Coquitlum but if it's as good as this place, I don't think I'll need to travel that far for some good Korean food.

Side dishes were good: Kimchi, creamy cheese mashed potato, sweet preserved diced radishes, seaweed salad, and squash puree. http://www.yelp.ca/biz...

Of course I had to try the famous Tofu Soup ($9.99). I had the mild mixed tofu soup. The soup was a deep orange colour that was full of a wonderful melody of beef, pork, and shrimp flavour that warmed my belly and stomach. The tofu was plentiful and was super soft and melted in your mouth. Along with the hot rice, this satisfied me to the max.

To even further satisfy my hunger, the Jap Chae ($14.99) was ordered. This was probably one of the best I've had. A bit on the pricey side but it came in a huge plate. The noodles are the most important part and they did not disappoint - I enjoy the extra effort that was needed into to nibble through the chewy, well-flavoured noodles. Make me work for my yummy noodles! The noodles weren't as oily as other jap chaes i've had before either. Tossed with broccoli, julienned carrots and beef, this was an amazing dish.

Overall, with pleasant service, this will be a place you'll see me returning to... duchess of House of Tofu here I come?

Note: The super hot stone bowl where your rice comes in, they give the option for you to pour tea in it. This is eaten as a kind of dessert where the tea is semi-sweet and the hardened rice are like chewy pieces. Please see: http://www.yelp.ca/biz...

Note: The fresh egg that is given with your side dishes is for your Tofu Soup, the egg will get cooked in your super bubbly hot tofu soup.

PS: The floors were a little slippery, I don't know if it was because it was from the rain outside but I almost fell on my butt! Be careful!

Located in a stripmall, this Coquitlam chain has come down to Richmond to open it's latest store.

It's a decent sized restaurant, the menu is simple but somewhat limited compared to other Korean fare.

I ordered the jap chae, the stone bibimbap and a side of fried dumplings. The usual side plates of seaweed, mashed potato, etc. arrived. I found the side plates quite sweet, especially the radish. I'm not sure if it was just off today, but I didn't really enjoy it. Kimchi could be spicier as well.

The fried dumplings were okay, a little too oily for my standards, but they were still tasty.

The jap chae was mediocre. Not very many veggies were included in it and it just appeared to be a giant, brown mass. Tasted okay, but I wouldn't order it again.

My stone bibimbap was good. I prefer my Korean food to have more kick to it and even after adding in a generous spurt of spicy sauce, it left me wanting for more. The side bowl of tofu soup was way too salty. Our friend also complained about hers as well. Portions were average and I was still hungry after I left.

I'm not sure if they had an off day, since there were plenty of positive reviews, but I probably won't be coming back here.

Don't let the frosted glass stray you away. An aroma of savory goodness wafts in the air as you enter. A large open space, clean and modern, nothing fancy, but it does its job.

A simple menu, with images and symbols that guide you easily to your decision. Nothing too complex, and of course, a main focus on "Tofu Soup."

They started us off with small appetizer plates: pumpkin soup, seaweed, mashed potato, marinated radish, and kimchi.

I got a stone bimbimbap, which also came with a small bowl of the tofu soup. This was quite a large portion too. You add your own sauce to this, a sweet one, and a semi spicy one. After, you mix all the ingredients together. Yes, stone bowl goodness-bean sprouts, carrots, cucumbers, beef, tofu, mushroom and an egg to top it all off.

Service was pretty non existent so you have to be patient. I can't wait to come back to try out other dishes!

We discovered that House of Tofu Soup had opened up in RIchmond yesterday. I used to drive all the way out to North Road to go to their original location.

We typically get the Bulgogi combination. You get to pick one of three barbecued meat dishes (beef, chicken, or pork) and one tofu hot pot. The pork and chicken are the better two in my opinion. If you get the chicken make sure to ask them for the sauce that goes on top of it. The soup is also good because you get to pick how spicy you want it and what ingredient you want (beef, chicken, kimchi, seafood, mushroom, or mixed).

Their soup yesterday was one of the best, if not best, I've had (and it usually is).

We also got their pancake which I (at first) thought was a bit expensive at $15; but I was wrong, it was worth it. They do a much better job cooking the pancake than other places which I've had it. The pancake exterior was crispy and perfectly browned. I'm not sure if it's the chef who was there that night who was really good or if they are typically this good.

    Notes:

When they bring you the soup they give you a raw egg. This is meant to be cracked into the tofu soup.

They will also pour some tea into a large stone bowl which has burnt rice stuck to it. This is meant to be a light after meal soup. It's something Korean's  traditionally eat.

If you are looking to drink. Get some Baekseju. This is a Korean alcoholic drink with a variety of herbs and ginseng that goes really well with barbecued meat.

Simple, easy comfort food. Tofu soup is the best...add a beef hotplate and you will be full. Good price for Korean.
    By the way, great kimchi

This restaurant is new in Richmond. Thursday night @ 8:30 p.m. , it is about 80 % full. Service is pretty good, took awhile for our food to come. It was worth the wait, very tasty Korean cuisine.
Nice to see more Korean restaurants in Richmond.
    Recommend you try.

A new Korean restaurant open at Richmond.  It was pretty busy on Friday night and we have waited 10 mins for a table.

The menu quite simple and only have 20 items to choose. We were waited for 45 mins before the food come.

The small dishes were good, pumpkin soup and mashed potato quite powdery, seaweed and marinated radish just ok. the kimchi was very good.

We had kimchi seafood tofu soup, it was tasty and not too spicy. Stone bowl rice was delicious and stir fried squid was perfect.

Good services (friendly and helpful) - limited selection on menu, a bit pricey for the portion .... tasty not that oily, otherwise worth going back - hard to find the entrance.
