Review from Anlina S.
Winnipeg, MB
I went to my second class at Hot Yoga Winnipeg today. We did the gentle hot class, where the heat is off and the room just retains the residual heat from the previous classes, which is definitely hot enough for me - I sweated a lot but I didn't feel uncomfortable or faint. 90 minutes and 26 asanas was just a perfect amount of yoga in that temperature.
It class size was small (8 people?), which was great and Sarah was our instructor.
Sarah is super nice, very high energy and really bubbly. Throughout the class she talks constantly in an upbeat but soothing tone, explaining the asanas, offering encouragement or correction or counting down time. She does minimal demonstration, usually walking around the class instead of doing the asanas with you.
The whole tone of the class is a bit different than any of the other yoga classes I've been to. There's no music or soft lighting, and the class feels like it has a primarily physical focus, rather than the mind-body focus that I've experienced with most yoga classes. I feel like I'm getting a really good work out with very little meditation and relaxation.
The facility is fairly nice. The yoga room is pretty big and is mirrored on two sides, natural flooring (pressed wood perhaps?) and has a drop ceiling with (I think) fluorescent lighting, and no windows. It has a bit more of an industrial feel that I'm used to, but it's not overly harsh or uncomfortable.
The women's change room is nicely appointed - cubby holes, benches & hooks, soft lighting and muted colours. No sinks, toilets or showers in the change room, though there is a public washroom down the hall from the studio. Drinks, popsicles and towel & mat rentals are available for a nominal charge.
We signed up for the introductory rate, which is two classes for $20. I'll probably continue to go back for occasional gentle hot yoga classes on Saturdays, though I do tend to prefer a class with a bit more of a relaxed feel to it.
The gentle hot class is still quite hot, so make sure you bring a towel and a change of clothes, and dress minimally for the class itself (tank top and short shorts is perfect) - you will walk out of there drenched in sweat, and you will definitely want to towel off and change into something dry for the trip home.
