Review from Laurel P.
A friend of mine arranged a small birthday party for me last weekend at Hooliganz. When she told me Friday was karaoke night, I didn't know if I should be apprehensive or excited. However, it turned out this is the perfect place for the amateur karaoke star to show off their skills. The crowd is small but appreciative. Everyone is there to have a good time and no one judges your singing skills. It kind of has the same feel of playing Rockband at home with a group of friends (in a good way).
One of my friends had to leave early in the night and was disappointed to find out that karaoke didn't start until 10pm. However, the staff was happy to start up the system early so she could serenade me. I think she put our appreciation most eloquently when she said "this is why I love this place: they make things happen".
Basically, Hooliganz is exactly what the perfect 3-star venue should be like. The staff are attentive and friendly, the atmosphere screams "neighbourhood pub", and the drinks are cheap ($4 Fridays!) Some of the best kinds of nights can be had at bars like this.Listed in: Under the Influence

Review from Carol K.
It was karaoke night at Hooliganz when I went. Not sure if this place has karaoke every night, or if they just have it on Friday night. I'm not sure if I would consider it a dive, but it's close. They offer pretty typical drinks and beers - nothing special. Someone at the table ordered nachos and they looked pretty good, only because they weren't COVERED in cheese and toppings. I hate soggy chips and boatloads of toppings. The space is pretty narrow, small stage, and it was -35 at evening so the draft swept all the way through to the stage because of the way it as set up.
If you're looking for a good night of karaoke, I would definitely recommend it. It's got a large selection of songs to choose from. Reminded me of Ducky's in Calgary.

Hooliganz is a bit of a dive, but not as bad as many neighbourhood pubs around the city. It's nothing fancy, but it'll do if you're looking for a drink and happen to be in the area.
Because of the awkward, long and narrow space Hooliganz is located in, it tends to feel crowded even on nights that it's not busy. If you're claustrophobic, this isn't the place for you.
The beer selection isn't huge, but it manages to extend beyond the standard Molson, Coors, and Bud that a lot of neighbourhood pubs limit themselves to, so you'll likely find a beer that will suit your tastes, even if you're not a fan of the big three.
The thing that really makes Hooliganz stand out from similar bars, and the reason that I'm giving it 3 stars instead of 2, is the fact that they frequently feature live music---usually local bands---and charge low or no cover for most of these shows.
I wouldn't count Hooliganz as one of my favourite bars, but if I'm in the mood for some live music and an unpretentious atmosphere, you just might find me at Hooliganz.Listed in: My Neighborhood

The only thing going for Hooliganz is they have feature local bands and usually don't charge cover.
Other than that, it is pretty much like every other neighbourhood pub. It is pretty small, actually it feels smaller than it is and often feels packed when it isn't. I guess it's good for a drink but the choices are small. I think they had like 3 brands of beer and just regular high balls.
It is a great thing for local bands though and can really help them get themselves out there. It is pretty known for its live music and a lot of people check it out for that reason. I'm not into any other aspect of it. -

Hooliganz isn't on my top 20 places to go in the city, but it's OK. It's your average pub with food and drinks. Nothing special, as you'd expect. The coolest thing it's got going for it is its name. They frequently have local bands here and charge low or no cover. It's a smaller place, pretty dark inside, and there's karaoke on Thursday and Friday nights, for those who want to stretch their vocal chords after a few drinks. The crowd's always changing, except for a small semi-regular core group that comes here. Hooliganz has a good downtown 124 Street location and it'll do if you want to stay in the area but don't feel like Boston Pizza, Col. Mustard's or Roxie's for your evening's entertainment. For other options you'd have to go a little east or west, toward 142 St., 104 Ave or Jasper.
