Can you imagine driving 7.3 miles, but taking 2 hours to do it in? I can, because we did this a few Fridays ago. We were going from Waikiki Aquarium to the Nimitz Hwy to the AAA office. Naturally it was during rush hour around 4pm and it was a Friday afternoon. I couldn't believe that the traffic just crawled. We had an appointment with our insurance agent and I had to keep calling her to tell her that there was no way we'd ever make it on time as the time drew closer. This is one instance.
My son had to go to a school for evaluation. Without traffic, it would take about 15-20 mins to drive the distance. That morning due to heavy rain, it took us exactly 1 hr to get there. This morning, his first day of school, it took us a good 45-50 mins to get there. I mean c'mon, it's only 11.6 miles according to yahoo maps.
I never believed anyone when they told me that the traffic was bad here. The many times we've been here, we'd always driven around a little later in the day and never having to really 'commute' anywhere. Boy, I'm reconsidering living on the Windward side now if my son gets into the school we want him to go to which is on the Leeward side.
Traffic is a bitch, what can I say? -

I'm planning my trip on Google Earth/Maps. I checkout the
highway between the North Shore and Waikiki. It looks
like a snake pit. Very intimidating. I held on tight on the
steering wheel the entire way. -

Honolulu traffic sucks. It's as bad as Texas, for sure, and is getting close to being as bad as Cali. People do speed up when you try to merge, they hardly ever wave "thanks", and they aren't that nice. There's always construction going on somewhere. It can take hours to go a couple of miles. Don't even bother driving between 4pm and 6pm, and you take your chances every other minute of the day.
