Superb. This might be the nicest place (indoors) to be in New York City. Cozy, bright room, coffee served in a chemex, yummy pastries, simple but amazing food, and the friendliest service. It feels like eating a gourmet meal in your living room.
It's worth a trip to Red Hook just to visit Homemade. Can't recommend it enough. -

First foray into Red Hook! Don't judge.
I normally dislike places that have coffee tables & couches (something about crumbs tucked into corners grosses me out), but I love love love how cozy this restaurant looked. We sat at the bar to eat and had a great time chatting w the servers. There also weren't any other diners when we were there, so it was as if we had the entire jewel box of a place to ourselves. It was a perfect brunch.
We ordered the following:
French Toast: This was the largest french toast I've ever seen. EVER. It was incredibly fluffy and drizzled w fruits & fruit sauce. Hedonism in a plate.
Roasted Tomatoes, Arugula & Fontina Scramble: Scrambled eggs were delicious and the potato side was tasty
Aidell's Sausage: This was a fun addition, but def could've done w/out. -

After having eaten at home/made for two years, I'm finally writing a review.
100% present, that's what they are.
Brunch, dinner, or just swinging by for a chocolate croissant or sticky bun... every little detail is given total care and attention. They hold themselves so an extremely high standard.
A comfy place that feels more homey than home.
Perfect. Always. -

I've been to all the "best" brunch places in Brooklyn and to my mind home/made wins hands down. The prices are incredible ($9-10 for more food than you can hope to eat) and it's as good as you can possibly imagine. The scrambles are fantastic, the french toast insane (1 slice, 4 inches thick, coated in syrup and topped with stewed fruit), and the potatoes provençal the best breakfast potatoes you will ever have in your life (whole cloves of garlic fried right alongside). The atmosphere is super casual, the decor (I hate to use the word) eclectic and inviting, and the outdoor seating makes no sense but in the best way.
Seriously, home/made is more than worth the hellish ride on the B61. -

The first time my fiance and I tried to eat at Home/made, it was closed for a private event. We were not deterred, and finally returned on a chilly Saturday night. Though we arrived close to 8 pm, there was NO WAIT--we got to sit right down on a cozy couch in what feels like someone's very well-appointed apartment.
The staff was so friendly, and though the dinner menu seems a bit small on first glance, there was a full list of amazing specials-everything we ordered came from the specials menu. We got the homemade ricotta and roasted cauliflower soup appetizers. The ricotta was delicious, and came with thick slices of Italian bread that had been charred right over the stove--perfectly crunchy and chewy. The roasted cauliflower soup was incredibly flavorful and satisfying--my favorite thing I ate (by a small margin). It came with a side of delicious bread as well.
For entrees, I got the truffled mac and cheese and Joe got wild mushroom lasagna. Both were perfect hearty comfort food and the portions were ample enough that we both had enough for leftovers.
The music was great, the vibe was relaxed and welcoming--there are not many places you can visit on a Saturday night in Brooklyn, get prompt and attentive service, amazing food, and get to tell the chef how good the meal was. We will definitely be returning, hopefully many times! -

I hate giving bad reviews, especially to really nice people so I threw in an extra star for effort. The people that work here are super nice and try really hard but they just can't seem to get their act together. First we stood outside waiting for the hostess to talk to us but after 10 minutes no one came, so we ignored the sign that stood outside (please wait to be seated) and walked into the place. It's tiny and there are a ton of people working there, so I am not sure why no one bothered to come up to us. We were finally seated in their outdoor garden, which looks more like a collection of old stuff (bikes, signs, trash, etc.) than any sort of garden. The seating is very uncomfortable and there is gravel throughout, which doesn't make it any more accommodating. We waited forever for the waitress to take our order, then another lifetime to get our drink and then our brunch came out in two orders. The fries came and then 15 minutes later, the rest of our food. I have to say, they were very nice and I believe even comped us for some of the food or drink, but overall it was not a great experience. As far as the food goes, it was OK. just OK. not great. If you have a ton of patience and a lot of time to kill, a lot of these things might not bother you, but if you're an anxious NYer like me, then you'll probably be sitting on the edge of your seat the whole meal. This felt like this was the type of place that was probably opened by a bunch of people who love to cook, but don't know much about running a restaurant. Sorry home/made! A for effort thought!

Went for brunch. Get there on the earlier side b/c the place is small and fills up. They offer complimentary coffee for those outside waiting for a table. Food is delicious and reasonably priced. My only complaint is that the menu is a bit limited.

I love this place. Have been several times and everything I have had is wonderful. Small and cozy - one feels like you are in someone's nicely decorated living room. I rec. sharing a few options. As stated it is extremely small so go at odd hours or be prepared to wait elsewhere when full (bar only has 4 seats). One minor drawback - the few times I have been service has always been really slow which seems odd as there are about 5 tables at best.

"That French toast was mad good. I would take a bus to go eat that."
When I asked my girlfriend just now what she thought of home/made, that's what she said, verbatim. She has questionable taste in many things: movies, beer, men...but the girl knows her French toast. Believe that. And if you don't, I can also vouch for this huge cube of carby, citrus-dipped deliciousness. It's all about the fantastic compote of sauteed apples and pears and syrup. (Dip the chicken-apple sausage in the syrup, if you know what's good for you.)
My truffle egg and parmesan scramble was also quite tasty, but not on the level of the toast. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the huge portion size; however, I couldn't help but wish that the eggs were overeasy. If runny egg goodness was dripping all over the walnut bread from Balthazar (heartiest bread of all time), and the potatoes provencal with the whole roasted shallots...I'm not sure I would be able to contain my joy.
home/made also benefits from having a delightful garden out back. It fills up quickly though, so get there early, or be relegated to the ever-so-slightly less pleasant dining room. Which is actually much more like a living room. Like my living room, in fact, considering how comfortable I was on one of the couches, listening to Wilco's Sky Blue Sky album.
I like this place. -

The stars were aligned for a romantic dinner in the garden at Home/made last night and it was perfect. The service was fantastic - attentive yet also giving us our space to feel like we were in our own backyard. The food was delicious - the stuffed dates wrapped in bacon are not to be missed, nor is the apple, fennel, and arugula salad. The rest of the menu looked delicious, but could also stand to be a little lighter for summer fare. The garden was really charming. There were even fireworks nearby to cap off the magical night.
This is one of those places that you want to review to support the business, but you also don't want to review because you want to keep it a secret. I obviously chose the former and will just hope that the next time I go, I experience the same laid back and comfortable visit. -
Review from Siv L.
After my first brunch experience at home/made I was practically in love with the place and have recommended it to friends and wanted to take friends from out of town here.
However my second experience has made me change my mind about venturing out to home/made for brunch.
We arrived and put our names in. Didn't have to wait too long for a seat. The service was friendly as usual so I feel bad writing a bad review!
It was about 2PM and they were out of their smoked bacon (which is a huge reason why I loved the brunch the first time!).
I ordered the scramble with mushroom and fontina cheese and the apple and chicken sausage. My boyfriend and sister's boyfriend both ordered the french toast as well as a side of the walnut toast.
The mushroom and fontina cheese was just OK. Was not as flavorful as the first time I had it. The portion of potatoes was only half of what I was given during my first visit. I did not receive a side of any toast (which is supposed to come with the dish)! I loved the sourdough toast that I was given during my first visit and raved about it in my last review. I had a few bites of my boyfriend's walnut toast which paled in comparison to the sourdough. I didn't want to be annoying and complain but I should have.
Overall the brunch experience was just OK. Would probably not come back unless in the area. :(1 Previous Review: Show all »

Just found my new favorite brunch spot. I love the laid-back, west coast feeling of this place. The staff was super-friendly, which to me is one of the most important parts of my going out experience. The food was great and they kept the mimosas flowing- which is one of the other most important things!
There was a bit of a wait because the inside is small, I am sure it is a little faster in the summer when the back yard is open. But it was worth the wait and we were able to linger for a long time with out feeling pressure to keep the tables moving.
I wish that Red Hook was a little easier to get to, but I guess I will have to be patient for warmer weather and can walk there, and then stumble home. -

My first trip to Red Hook was last weekend, and my beau had scoped out some brunch places beforehand. While several looked good, we decided on home/made. It's adorable and quaint, with a very friendly waitstaff. It's small, but we were able to get a seat right away, which was a pleasant surprise.
They have Stumptown coffee, a perfect start to the meal. I got the french toast with caramelized fruit, and it was downright heavenly. My beau even used the leftover caramel drizzle on his rustic (yummy) toast. His dish was massive, with a scramble and potatoes. His side of chicken-apple sausage smelled amazing, and the taste (allegedly) matched. I'll take his word for it, he's pretty honest.
Reasonably priced for quality food, and a great atmosphere. It's not the best place for groups but that doesn't mean I won't recommend it to all of my friends to go. With me. At the same time. -

Today I was tasked with collecting a cheese plate to bring to an event. The cheese plate came from home/made. The cheese plate was large. I have a car. No one else at the nonprofit I volunteer for sometimes does. So off I went. By the time I arrived at this delightful tiny shop, I was disgruntled. Traffic in NYC at 5:30-6PM on a weekday is HORRENDOUS. Bad traffic + deadline = cranky Susan S.
But my day brightened when I beheld the consummate amazingness of this cheese plate. This is a cheese plate to "behold" not merely to "see." There was mushy cheese. Gooey cheese. Hard cheese. More gooey cheese. Fruits and compotes and delicious toasted and untoasted breads lay all over this plate. They were huge, chunky, and sculpturally composed like a flower arrangement.
And damn, this thing was delicious. I think I am personally responsible for eating at least 1/10 of this cheese plate. If I ever have anything catered, it will be from here.
I will be back to eat in-house too. The shop looked adorable. The cakes the 2 employees were decorating and setting out for an event when I stopped in were gorgeous. The food I had was stellar. I have a long-standing lunch date planned for "somewhere in Red Hook" and now, I plan on insisting it take place at home/made.
Next time, however, I will make sure to visit them NOT by car during rush hour. Sunday afternoon, perhaps? -

Great Tasting Food, great bottomless coffee, comfy couches...serious shortfall on value.
Went for brunch:
Wild Mushroom and Fontina Scramble - awesome. nice pile of eggs, good potatoes, and amazing thick toast
Potatoes Provencal Salad - FAILURE. for the same price as the scramble you get the same side dish amount of potato with a handful of arugula replacing the generous portion of eggs. Ouch
Be sure to ask about the specials. We didn't know there were any until we overhead the waitress describing them to another table as we were leaving.Comment from Leisah S. of home/made 12/13/2011

I'm now at the point where I have conversations with my girlfriend about what else in this world we can possibly hipsterfy...doughnuts, corn dogs, microwave popcorn... Yes hipsterfy...that lovely (made-up by me right now) movement that takes Ice Cream, Boba, Cookies, Sandwiches, Tacos, and yes Brunch and transforms them into kitschy necessities of the daily routine among wellness-conscious Urbanites.
Hip Brunch places dot the nation's most desirable urban centers like cell phone coverage maps these days. It's truly interesting to me to witness this movement in dual roles: one as a cog in this frivolous machine and one as someone who takes a step back and asks questions such as "Why?"
Why "Why", because more often than not eating Brunch at one of these places feels more like buying a $30 American Apparel T-Shirt for the sole purpose of responding to the boner you received from their Facebook Ad.
Thankfully, with home/made I don't have to worry about such poorly thought out decisions.
This food is delicious...and even though your omelet will need an additional $3 for bottomless coffee, maybe an additional $5.5 for a mimosa and perhaps another $4 for Bacon or Chicken Sausage, it doesn't matter because everything is so quality.
Freshest Omelet around...I think mine had Arugula, Cherry Tomatoes and Parmesan. It's been a few days and my memory is not so good.
The Potatoes are the best around as well...with whole roasted garlic cloves.
The brunch also comes with a delicious walnut bread that's made with whole wheat flour, white rye flour and barely malt...it's truly a one of a kind bread.
The restaurant is tiny and amazingly original without a cubic centimeter of wasted space. The inside space feels more like a covered patio than a dining room...considering the raw exposed floors and ceilings and pass through to the back courtyard garden with wild edibles framing 3 family style tables.
A truly delicious experience where you can actually relax with your friends or family. -
Review from Mike D.
Very artsy fartsy and the restaurant looks as if it was decorated from collections of garage sales. Came here on a recommendation from the owner at Dry Dock after a rum tasting. It missed in a lot of areas. Sorry :(.
Ordered a cheese plate which came with nuts, figs, dried fruit and crostinis. It was ok, but not worth the $15 price tag. Also tried the pears and gorgonzola with honey on walnut bread. Once again pretty good, but could've easily made it at home for a quarter of the price. Portions were small on both.
It was too hot to sit out in the backyard, but inside wasn't any better because all they had was a small area fan on the floor by the front door. The waitress was nice enough to direct it right on us, but we were the only patrons at the time. We opted for a refreshing drink and the white sangria with watermelon and basil sounded different, but was willing to give a try. The watermelon and basil were a mismatch. Personally, I would make it with mint instead of basil. Once again another miss. I do have to give props that they had Aprihop by Dogfish Head on tap, although we didn't try it.
Definitely a place for the hipster type, but wasn't up my alley. A couple of tweaks here and there and I think they would be on target, but not enough of an impression was left for me to return. -

What a wonderful experience.
Home/made is "walk-able" from the Bergen Street F stop...or from Ikea/fairway.
We walked from around Court and 9th, nice, sunny, and about 20 minuets.
Got there and saw that there was free coffee if you had to wait - but we didn't have to wait.
We sat at the bar and the employees were very nice, good conversation, loved all the decor, great music. - either someone's Ipod or pandora.
We ate the French Toast (WOAHHH!) and had the bacon and sausage sides. It was way more than enough for 2 people.
If you are like me, coffee can make or break brunch: THe COFFEE IS AMAZING. -

I have stumbled upon brunch perfection!
It's possible that I was in an extra good birthday mood here but I'm pretty sure it was one of the best brunches I've ever had. I love the feel of the whole space (inside and out) and the food was beyond satisfying. Our server was also very sweet which made the experience wonderful. They have fun and refreshing cocktails that were a pleasure to drink in the shade of the backyard. I had a lime pineapple sangria (yummy).Listed in: BRUNCHOMANIA, Top Restaurants

First of all, please remember, this is RED HOOK! The informal service is part of this neighborhood's charm. If you want "professional," upscale service, go eat on the Upper East Side.
Tini is a great little find. It's got a decent wine selection, but the beer on tap is good, if not limited (it's a small place!). They do a good panini-type dinner, with crispy-pressed fresh bread, although it's not particularly inspired.
The servers are great people - I've gotten to know them. The owners seem aloof to their storefront (understandably, since they focus on the catering aspect, I assume), except it's to the point that they don't even know their neighborhood regulars. I see them often, even on the street (as I work nearby) and there's never a hint of recognition. That strikes me as somewhat tragic.
I'm still impressed that their white couch isn't completely covered in red wine stains. -

I channel-surfed past a FoodNetwork mention of Red Hook last Saturday afternoon, and talked my husband into a long walk. Google Maps to the rescue, we dragged our lazy butts off the couch and braved the tourist gaggle over the Brooklyn Bridge, through parts of Fort Greene, Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, and even the outskirts of Park Slope before finally arriving.
Ah, Red Hook. Alan Richman calls it "exquisitely downscale." Is that code for blue collar? Hey, that's cool with me. I felt comfortable in jeans and sneakers, which is more than I can say about most of Manhattan, and I've lived here for 8 years. The neighborhood seems approachable in a lived-in, comfortable couch sort of way.
We ventured into Tini while waiting for a table at Good Fork across the street. I think they get that a lot. I'd call the decor funky-chic, and the owner(s) are all quick with knowledgeable suggestions about the diverse and relatively extensive wine list. As wine is their wheelhouse, it seems more a fortuitous accident than deliberate choice that Tini also offers several strong beer selections.
Either way, Mark and I enjoyed our visit, and I'd go back again, especially to sample their menu.
Two suggestions for Manhattanites venturing into Red Hook territory. First, don't walk. It's way too far. Second, it's worth it. Very fun, very real people with a genuine love of life. -

The sign outside doesn't lie. They really do have great scrambled eggs. This is a really cute small restaurant - the set up is definitely not traditional - couches and casual seating, a friendly cat that found a seat on my lap.
The service was friendly but not too involved. The walnut bread they give you with brunch was FANTASTIC. I almost wanted to take it home 'to go'. I had the smoked salmon with dill and goats cheese scramble. YUM! The eggs were perfect and not overcooked at all.
Portions were large (but not chain restaurant large). Hope to return sometime soon! -
Review from Joolz M.
This lovely restaurant is wonderful. We arrived right at 5pm on a Sunday night, and I thought I was in someone's house at first! I think the owners and a few staff members were just hanging out, preparing for the night patrons to arrive, and it seriously felt as though we were so welcome. We started with a delicious wine recommendation by our server. I wish I could remember what it was called, but I really enjoyed tremendously. Next, we opted for one of the specials--homemade cauliflower soup with Kalamata olives, capers, and truffle oil on top. It was seriously one of the most delicious things I have ever eaten. Next came the open-faced mushroom sandwich with fontina cheese served on a bed of watercress, which was also wonderfully good. We also shared the roasted garlic potatoes with aioli, and while this is a simple item to make, it was so good!!! I honestly can't tell you when the last time was that I enjoyed my meal so much. The homemade goodness seeped through everything, and the cozy (beautifully and antiquey-cleverly decorated) setting truly made me feel at home. So we decided to spring for dessert, and opted for coffee (served in a super-cute caraffe with a cork lid to keep it warm) and the bread pudding with chocolate and salted caramel. Holy moly, this thing is off the charts!!!!! The ONLY reason that I did not give this place 5 stars is because they forgot our dessert, and we had to ask them for it after waiting for about 25 minutes. I was thinking they might offer to comp it, but they did not. Still, we were relaxed, and not in too much of a hurry, so all is well. I am sooooo thrilled that I found home/made. I cannot wait to go back, hopefully for brunch next time.

Home made huh- not at all like anything I could make at home and thank god!
Everything was lip-smacking, plate-licking good and I'm a serious brunch snob.
My truffle egg scramble was rich and filling, the boyfriend carefully guarded his wild mushroom scramble and the parents cooed over their french toast and smoked salmon scramble. My father was so happy with his food he didn't even complain about the nontraditional seating.
My only complaint? I was so full I didn't want anything when we walked past Baked, now that is a tragedy. -

Home/made is such a gem! The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated and comfortable. They have strategically placed sample bowls of their homemade granola, which is delicious!
We all had scrambles: two asparagus and goat cheese and one mushroom with a side of bacon. The coffee was brought out in a large carafe for the three of us, with bottomless refills no less!
The food was stellar and so was the atmosphere. The prices are a little high, I think someone mentioned a $5 mimosa, my menu said $8/9! However, I will say that the portions they give you are MORE than filling and that their bread is not just a throw away side item. Homemade walnut bread...mmmmm!
Will be coming back to Redhook for brunch here for sure. -

Ample portions at a reasonable price. Eggs cooked just right, nice and fluffy. Wonderful fresh bread. Tasty mimosas. Very comfortable atmosphere. Stylish, but not pretentious. The bright, homey interior makes those lazy Sundays all the more enjoyable. And the place just smells so d**n good. -

Very cute back yard. Walnut bread was great. Good solid breakfast fare. Don't expect anything too inventive, but do expect well executed simple food.

So cute, I felt like I was walking into a crate and barrel commercial.
Whats up with the couches? Is redhook becoming Miami? And there was a mangy looking cat that appears to own the place, dont give him tips, he will just spend it on katnip!
the muscles were amazing. Served with a thin toast. Toast is usually delicious, but this stuff was mana.
Great place for a casual bite and some wine with friends, although it was date night city when I went... -

Overall great spot! The place just oozes charm effortlessly, from the coffee carafes, the sea salt dishes, couch-seating, decor, everything.
Our waiter was friendly and genuine, attentive, but not overly-so.
We each had a scramble, both were delicious, and as others have said, the walnut bread is soooo good. We were there at the very end of brunch service, but the bread was still super fresh & moist.
I'm just holding back that 5th star until I can experience the back patio/garden seating! (it was raining today) -

The atmosphere is unique: very much eclectic. Picture sitting on couches (literally) around coffee tables. While I thought it gave the place a great home feeling, I could see it getting annoying if eating a whole meal. My group, however, was there just for drinks after brunch. We had the most amazing lemonade cocktails and equally as phenomenal chocolate cake. The bill was a bit high, but taking the quality into account along with the VERY friendly service... I'll be back to try the brunch.

We came here for our Sunday brunch.
I had the mushroom and fontina - it was yummy and made me feel happy inside; my boyfriend had the french toast - it was sweet and delicious and he loved the bountiful pears as toppings.
As for drinks, I had the pomegranate mimosa - it was good and wasn't sweet (with enough alcohol to make me spacy), and he had the french press coffee - the coffee was premium in taste and generous in portion.
The service was great - attentive, friendly, and helpful.
The place was cozy and intimate. The couches were very comfortable. It felt new age zen. -

Had a lovely Sunday brunch here. Service is certainly less than professional (think college coffee shop), but also friendly and human.
Our meals were amazing though-- goat cheese and asparagus omelet with a fantastic walnut bread and Provencal potatoes, and then a decadent brioche french toast with sauteed apples, pears, and dried cherries. Really delicious, and only $9 each. Not too bad. The coffee, served only in $3 french press servings, was also very good.
Indeed minuscule, the atmosphere was very cute, kind of like being in someone's living room who has really good taste. -

We ended up at Tini after a long afternoon of trying to find another place in Red Hook that no longer exists. I was so eager to sit my tired ass down that I didn't realize it was a wine bar... and I knew full well my boyfriend wanted nothing more than a beer. (And perhaps to strangle me for getting us so pathetically lost.)
Luckily, the woman who served us was knowledgeable about their selection (as soon as she described the stout as having "a high alcohol cont-" said partner cut her off with "I'll take it")
We ordered (and shared) the goat cheese salad and the caramelized onion, gruyere and ham tart. The salad was light and pretty much what you'd hope for and expect from a goat cheese salad, and the tart, while REALLY thin, totally packed a punch in cheesy-hammy-oniony flavor and hit the spot. They were decently sized -- enough to qualify as a light dinner.
As for ambiance -- the place was incredibly laid back: overhead fan on low, light music, and tons of early evening sunlight pouring in. We were looking for a low-key, no-pressure respite from the heat and exhaustion of our two-mile trip up and down Van Brunt to find a place that ended up being on Van Dyke, and Tini was it. -

Sweet. Cozy. Charming. Often these adjectives are really code for "cramped and cluttered", but not this time. Tini has a lovely and warm atmosphere. Is everything perfect ? No. Several menu changes and missing items had to be noted by our sever, and she did not have a ton of info about the wines. However, she was polite and attentive, the food was tasty, well-portioned, and fairly priced, and the setting is truly warm and welcoming.
P.S. In the summertime they have a water bowl outside for traveling canines. -
