Vancouver, BC
* A metaphor for Vancouver *
This market is a perfect metaphor for the cultural mix of Vancouver. The US always talks about a melting pot of cultures - where everything gets melted down into some joint stew. Before it gets melted it is still in "pure" form with the various ethnic markets.
Canada always talks about a "cultural mosaic" where every culture contributes to a bigger picture to make a beautiful mosaic.
I don't think I've ever been in a market the captures the mosaic idea so effectively!
You can find food from all over the world in this little market. But it isn't sorted into little ethnic grocery neighbourhoods. They are sorted by type.
So if you go to the cookie section you find cookies from Austria right next to ones from Taiwan.
The spice section is particularly enjoyable for some hard to find ingredients - everything from the French salt to Mexican chili. They seem to have a particularly good supply of Thai spices (all from the Thai Cock brand) including dried holy basil (kraprow), galangal, and dried kaffir lime leaves.
The dried stock section has Japanese bonito right next to Something South African next to Knorr products.
You get the idea. There is a treasure trove of ethnic ingredients in this little shop.
They also have a take-out counter in the back that serves up typical Persian food. I haven't sampled the food there, but it looked good from what I saw!
What a perfect metaphor for all of the different communities in Vancouver's cultural mosaic! -

A nice Asian Market near Downtown. This is a great place to just pick up something instead of running to a restaurant any paying much more. There are also small little shops upstairs and downstairs for precooked food. I went to one to get a sweet potato.

Homa is a good little convenience store stocked with all the basics, from fruits/veggies to pasta and rice. It sits directly across the street from Caper's, which has got to be rough on them.
Depending on what you're looking for and how well it sells, some products might be a little dusty. As with any market, make sure to check expiration dates before purchasing. -

I think Marc D.'s review is spot-on - this place DOES seem to have a little from here, and a little from there, and defies categorization that we normally use for these types of shops. Sadly, I realize that I much prefer going to the Japanese shop, or Russian one, or Mexican one, or whatever. Having said that, I don't think I've ever seen South African foodstuffs. Not that I've wanted to, but good to know just in case! I did like some of the Persian breads available but that seems generally a bit more common here compared to SF.

really good and cheap fresh fruit. We found some very sweet cherries and fantastic locally grown blueberries for a fraction of the price of the safeway down the street. In the process of picking those fruits, we found some good peaches and apricots as well. Equally cheap. If you are making a big grocery run, then this place wont have the inventory to meet your needs, but as a fruit and vegi stand, this place is fantastic.
