Who doesn't love perogies hand-made by church ladies??? Be careful, because they are filling!!! We got there early and were close to the front of the line, so there was no doubt we were getting our hands on some of this goodness.
I wouldn't get the dessert, since it seems like it's just a store-bought cake. But everything else was delicious!!Listed in: Yelp Vancouver 30 day…

Fun, but disappointing. We arrived about 6.30pm on a Friday night and were pleasantly surprised by the short queue to get in, and a friendly greeting... but once we were in it was another 30 minutes or so until we actually got our food. I went for the Borsch ($3.50) followed by the Pyrohy dinner ($12 for 6 perogies, 2 cabbage rolls, Sauerkraut, a small piece of Ukranian sausage and a coffee).
The Borsch was fine, but pretty much cold by the time I got it to the table and not exactly filled with flavour. The meal was better, but again suffered from being cold and a bit bland. Annoying, because it was so nearly great - the perogies and cabbage rolls were better textured and much lighter than I've had before. A bit more attention to seasoning and more effective hot plates would have made this a three or four star review.
Worth trying at least once for the experience, but could be so much better. -

I fear that god many strike me down for my 2 star review! :)
Being half -Uke, I have high standards for my pyrohy ('rogies)and holubtsi (cabbage rolls). When I heard that little old babas were in charge of making a big Ukrainian dinner once a month I was shouting "Hallelujah!"
We headed to the church and lined up outside, and then again inside (budget about 45min -1hour for this process). The first thing I noticed was that the prices were steep - 12 dollars for a Vegetarian plate? Thems restaurant prices. I understand that they are a charity, but this was the most expensive I have ever seen a church supper.
Then came the chit system. We tried to save paper by only using one, but we were rebuffed and scolded as the cashier rolled her eyes at my pleas to save paper and filled out a separate form for each of us. :(
Next up, the towering stacks of paper plates - everything disposable. Eek! I asked if I could use my own container and was told "No, that would mess up our system." Hm. Paper plates are kind of messing up OUR system - like, the planet?
Last, and certainly least - the food. Bland, doughy perogies. A big glob of sour cream (not really Ukrainian). The most flavourless cabbage rolls on the planet, filled with gloppy rice and NO sour flavour at all. Caesar salad? C'mon. This is NOT what Ukes eat. I felt ashamed for them.
I understand that the assembly line makes things pretty rigid, and I know from experience that making perogies for 1000s is a huge chore, but a little salt and pepper and love into the food would be appreciated.
I have never once eaten anything that tasted like this made by Ukrainian hands. Step up your game, babas. For 12 bucks I want something that is "duzhe dobre!" (Very good!)Listed in: Jessica's Eateries to Avoid!

The 5 stars are for the full experience, although the food is dang tasty, too.
On the first Friday of every month, church ladies make thousands of perogies and a full perogie dinner -- with saurkraut, sausages, and cabbage rolls. You go in with a big group of friends, decide whether you want a mini or the max meal, pay around $10 give or take, and sit down in a big auditorium at tables scattered throughout the space.
The full meal includes coffee/tea and a dessert, too. -

This is SOOO UNIQUE!.. at least I think so! I was told that there would be a lineup.. and it only happens once a month.. so I'm telling you - do not come starving because you may have to bail before you get in... or come early.
Every first Friday at the HTUKC, there is a perogy dinner from 5pm to 8pm. volunteers spend their day making perogies and cabbage rollls, raising funds for the church.
I arrive with my friends just after 6:30.. the line up is out the door... and about 15 - 20 minutes later I make it in.......... the church hall is smaller than I thought... the process if pretty efficient. One of the volunteers will give you placemats and direct you to an open table for your party. You can pick up an order form on the table and line up (this time for the food)... trust me.. it's another 20 - 30 minute wait. during that time.. you can decide what type of meal you would like:
Regular dinner - 6 perogies, 2 cabbage rolls, ukrainian sausage, saukerkraut or salad
Super dinner: 10 Perofies, 4 cabbage rollsm ukrainian sasuage, S or S
Mini dinner: 4 perogies, 1 cabbage, sausage, salad only
Dinner range from 8 - 15 dollars
there is borscht and dessert to add on.
All dinners come with tea or coffee.
I thought everything was super tasty.. never thought I'd like the cabbage rolls but they were great. Lots of sautted onions and sour cream to top it off.
It's listed as one of Vancouver's 101 Best Eats! I don't know if it's one of the best things to eat.. but it's definitely one of the best experiences ever!Listed in: Vancouver Magazine's 101 Best…

I love this place!!! Its on Main Street and 10th Ave and I go there every first Friday of the month. I love perogies, saurcraft, borsch soup and cabbage rolls.
Its better to come early because line can be long (especially in colder months). Prices are convenient and I can't wait for the next first Friday to eat there :) -

Perogies, perogies, I love perogies!! On this cool and crisp Friday night, my friend and I decide to venture out to get ourselves some authentic perogies.
Arriving a bit late, there was no line up and many of th patrons were already done eating. We have never been here before, but figured that you fill out an order form, and then hand it to them.
We shared the SUPER DINNER, which consists of:
* 10 Pyrohy
* 4 Cabbage Rolls
* Sauerkraut or Salad
* Ukrainian Sausage
* Coffee
The volunteers will scoop and plate your order, and then you can help yourself to tea, coffee, or water.
We seat ourselves at one of the large round tables. Perogies were yummy, loved the filling! Cabbage rolls were also good, lots of flavourful rice in the filling.
These dinners, made with love and hard work are simply awesome!! -

Handmade perogies oma style. Okay cabbage rolls. Tasty Ukranian sausage. Big portions. Once a month. Discouragingly long line-ups. Worth your while.
Sorry about the primitive talk. Just thinking about all that meat and potatoes makes me lose words. -

I came.
I stood in line.
I stood in line again.
I stuffed.
and I rolled.
Definitely a worthwhile experience and lots of fun; a great Friday night venue to meet other random diners. As other posters have noted: be prepared to line up to get in. And then again to get your food.
Don't come hungry!
My friend and I split the $14 Super Dinner: 10 Perogies, Saurkraut, 4 cabbage rolls, 1 sausage and a cup of coffee/tea - a good deal for $7 each. But to be honest, whilst I can appreciate handmade perogies (the TLC and sweat that's poured into them), I thought they tasted bland and too doughy. I prefer my perogies sauteed to a nice golden crust on the outside. The cabbage rolls were delicious and saurkraut was milder than what I'm used to.
Next time, I'll BYO my own hot sauce or Oddball Organics Smoked Chipotle Garlic salt to kick it up a flavour notch! -

Vegetarian cabbage rolls, nom nom. Thank goodness this dinner is only once a month or else I would have a serious weight problem because I can't get enough of this food! It's worth the long queue but do try to get there early if you can, it is a dinner experience like no other in the city. The only downside is that they don't have a liquor licence, if they did, then this place would truly be heavenly. The price is right, the portions are huge and every time I leave, I practically roll home and all for the low, low price of 12$!
