If you ever happen to stop in Warren, PA you are looking at ohhhh maybe 2 decent hotels to pick from... I always stay at the Holiday Inn.

First- the staff here is excellent. Super helpful and friendly (a girl or 2 from the bar might need to learn some customer service). Second the food at the bar is really pretty damn good! Third there is a fireplace in they lobby and in the winter it's nice to go have a drink and warm yourself. Fourth there is a swimming pool. Fifth loads of parking. Sixth there is a rewards program that you can rack up lotsa points for free stays and other perks. Seventh the beds are really damn comfortable. Eighth and ninth free wi-fi and good cable stations.

I have to admit that many of the things which annoyed me about my visit were not the hotel's fault: I wanted a nice, quiet, candlelit, romantic dinner to present the light of my life and delight of my eyes with her engagement ring, but the dining room was booked for some corporate dinner, and the atrium was echoing to the screams of two rooms worth of young girls apparently having some kind of mondo sleepover birthday party. Romantic? Not! But it's not like I could ask the hotel to clear out everybody but us. (I will say that the service was great. Excellent wait staff.)

Still, for being the priciest hotel in Warren (not that there's a whole bunch of competition), I was surprised at a few odd quirks. When I arrived, the plug in the bathtub, which was on one of those complicated lever arrangements so you could open and close it by flipping the lever instead of getting your hand wet (or losing the plug), was hanging out into the tub, and we couldn't get it back in to fill the tub. The front desk sent up a handyman right away, but still, it was odd that that kind of thing wasn't checked when the room was cleaned.

I also found the breakfast buffet less than impressive. Seriously. I stayed in a dive in Erie that put on a more impressive spread. And they expected me to pay $7.50 for breakfast, except for one freebie? I don't be thinking so.

But the weirdest thing was that, every day when my room was made up, the radio was tuned away from the station I had selected, to a country station. To me, that's just weird. (And annoying. Even though the station I wanted had a local repeater, the signal wasn't very strong, so it always took me a while to zero in on it. Besides which, as John Cleese said once, "Why people who have not committed any punishable offence listen to country and western music is absolutely beyond me.")

This is the cleanest and nicest Holiday Inn I have seen in many, many years.   After several nasty experiences with the chain I swore off of them for probably a decade.  However, when looking for accommodations in smaller towns you're kind of stuck with what's available.  At first I was shocked that I was paying $129 (plus tax and all that other garbage) for a room with two doubles and a $20 breakfast voucher in a town with only 14,000 people.  However, it's close to the popular Rt. 6 that meanders across the top of PA.  I assume that is how they get away with highway robbery in the middle of the PA wilds.

I was pleasant ly surprised with the quality.  The whole hotel is very nicely appointed and decorated.  The lobby was very nice, the grounds were well kept, the staff was friendly, the bar offers about 150 different martinis (the Bright Bay - or something like that - was really good).  The restaurant was beautiful and offered regular seating or atrium seating near the indoor pool. The kids went wild about the three tropical fish tanks near the lobby and bathrooms. Even the public bathrooms right off the lobby were sparkling clean on a night when two decent sized events were occurring (two class reunions).

We only had two problems.  1) we were on the 4th floor (top floor) and with the greenhouse heating effect of all the atrium glass and the indoor pool we found our room (which had a balcony over the atrium area) was very warm in the evening when we checked in.  However, the staff promptly had someone come up to the 4th floor walkway and open a huge skylight to let some of the heat out.  2) the bars on the balcony for our room and the 4th floor walkway from the elevator to the rooms were wide enough for the 2 year old to fall through.  We asked for another room but they were booked because the hotel was hosting those two WAHS class reunions.  At least the lobby staff pleasantly checked to see if anything was possible.  We slept with one eye open because our 2 year old is a Kazakh escape artist.

Parking is plentiful.  The room was spotless (unlike the Adams Mark in Buffalo the night before). The bathroom was pristine.  The little one cup coffee maker was fantastic (although the coffee was a little weak).  The TV had tons of channels.  The beds were soooo comfortable.  I asked for a pillow off of the "Pillow Menu" based upon their recommendations and it was a perfect fit for my sleeping style.  The towels were soft.  The complimentary toiletries smelled of mint.  There were those chocolate covered candy sticks you sometimes find on your pillow.  Very nice.  It made me smile . . . and I usually find tons of things wrong with hotels.  I've actually made my hubby leave a few over our almost 20 years together because I thought the places were too trashy/dirty/smelly/dingy/scary/unsafe, etc.  I would live at this Holiday Inn.

The kids ate for free so with the $20 voucher we only had to pay for coffee.  The Eggs Florentine were great and the coffee was (buzz buzz buzz) nice and strong.

We're looking at investment properties in the area.  If we buy, this will definitely be the place we stay when checking on things.

    Two thumbs up!

P.S.  If you're there during their 4th of July fireworks (which they set off on the 5th this year) the area just outside of the hotel is prime viewing space.  Trust me on this one.  They were spectacular . . . better than what Niagara Falls did on the 4th!  I'm going back to Warren just for the fireworks!
