Review from Alice A.
We were driving around Richmond aimlessly looking for a place to satiate our hunger. After parking the car in the vicinity, we chose to check out Ho Yuen based on their all Asian clientele and the fact that it was quite busy for 6ish in the evening. There are just too many items to choose from, which can be good or frustrating depending on whether you already know what you want or are completely clueless with the colossal selection.
We ordered fried beef noodles/Thai style and shrimp dumpling lo mein. OMG, the serving was huge! Between the two of us, we really should have ordered just one main noodle or rice dish and a plate of vegetables or something. I thought the fried beef noodles was on point, there's a slight stir-fry burnt smell to the wide rice noodles just the way it should be - it means that they used a good strong heat to stir-fry. The beef was tender and delicious. Not too oily. And the shrimp dumplings were beyond yummy! Not only were they fat and juicy, they were well wrapped and perfectly cooked. Very nice, all five of them! The 'lo mein' that came with it wasn't what I expected but it was still ok. Basically it's skinny yellow noodles boiled and strained, served with green gailan and hot clear broth on the side.
This restaurant may advertise fusion which simply means they offer pasta and/or steaks if you so prefer, but essentially they serve well good authentic Chinese/Hong Kong/Asian food. Not bad for 15 bucks before tips, and we doggy-bagged too.
