I've been here several times. I find the food mediocre but one dish you should try would be the egg-tarts. The tart shell is like no other. It's soft and flaky. They blow my mind away every time. I hope they'll blow yours away too.

Do prepare to wait. The number of Asians you see in this restaurant is overwhelming. They line up as if the food is free.

The service was terrible (we were constantly flagging, even just to have our order taken) and half of our food came out lukewarm.

We came for dinner and ordered some large dishes, such as the Alaskan Crab and Peking Duck. These were pretty mediocre and hinted at possible microwave use, especially the rice (which apparently you had to pay extra for, this is not typical for other restaurants that serve the alaskan crab where you get 3 dishes made out of it).  In fact, the crab in the rice was highly suspicious (e.g., artificial crab meat?).  Also, who brings out the rice as the first dish to eat with absolutely nothing?

My father had complained to them several times that the food came out cold.

They were surprised later that he gave a terrible tip and actually stopped him and told him that he didn't tip enough!  That was just absolutely rude.

sure, HML might not be as fancy looking as the other nearby competitions... but the quality of the food (at a portion of the price) as well as the customer service is all top notch!!

i've tried both their seafood set menus and they are both awesome:
    1. $99 lobster + 3 dishes
    2. $138 king crab + 3 dishes

As well, dim sum is 20% off all day long!!
can't say enough about this place, it's fantastic.

    PASS!

Yeah, I don't know why my grandparents like this place so much.  I guess it's cos they know how to suck up to them.  It doesn't hide the fact that the food is subpar and the service is condecending. I really need to find my grandparents a new haunt, this place is not on my top 300.

Our family had dim sum here this morning and the food was not good.  Why is it so busy here anyway?

    Here's what we ordered:

    1.) Har Gow - Decent
2.) Rice rolls with shrimp - Shrimp tasted old
3.) Meat with lotus root in clay pot - Drenched with sauce and a little too salty and had too much cornstarch
4.) Congee - Average, some of the meats didn't have flavor and some were too salty
5.) Rice rolls with Chinese donut - The only dish I thought was done well
6.) Vegetarian Chow Mein - Needed more soy sauce or a kick

    I won't be coming back.

Being a dim sum restaurant in Richmond and waiting almost 30mins to be seated (and I had a reservation too), I was quite disappointed.

The food was your typical dim sum but tasted average or below average. To make matters worse, the service was VERY POOR and SLOW. :(

The entrance was overflowing with people, and there was no where to sit. Parking is in the multi storage parkade.

I was surprised that my mother wanted to come to this restaurant, after having many so-so times here with many different restaurants here in the past I had to be hesitant. I was greatly surprised as to why I would come here again = EGG TART.

This place by far has taken it to the top of my egg tart craving. Not overly sweet, nice soft custard texture, far from hard jello, and a very flaky pastry like crust, the sense of butter and hot out of the oven, these bad boys came first at the table before the savory delights, and due to our stomachs being hungry, we decided to eat these first, not a wrong move at all. There was a point during lunch I wanted to order a second batch, but that was my taste buds talking and not my overly full stomach.

The dim sum was pretty good here, and after all the slack this place has gotten from others, I can say that either they have heard the complaints, or they just changed up their whole kitchen staff. Another reason to come here, free tea, and 20% off, your not going to find a better deal for dim sum in Richmond, and it is not crap your paying for, it is actually decent food.

The place is pretty big, seating wise with the main room, and some side private rooms that they fill up tables in them, and you may be seated there too. Just get here early, as I think most people also know about the egg tarts, free tea, 20%, and if you don't mind waiting, then you have been warned!

Last thing is the parking, as it is multi level, and the spots are tight, if you find one, don't bother circling up the lot, you may get stuck!

Agree with the 2 star reviews posted so far... this place was picked by a colleague who knows nothing about dim sum and I was the only Asian person in the group, so this did not bode well from the beginning!

Location is convenient but parking garage is a pain... the menu is Cantonese style with english translations of the items but no pictures.  Food quality is only so-so (I did the ordering since the others didn't know where to start... har gow, sticky rice, shrimp rice rolls, taro cake, and other classics were my picks).  It's not bad, but also not great.  Service was fine and bathrooms are clean.

Given the amazing options less than a block away, I wouldn't come back again.

We came here on a very quiet on a Tuesday night for my parents' anniversary dinner.  There were only us and may be two other tables.  Service was very good and attentive but it may perhaps due to the high staff to customer ratio that night.

We ordered shark fin soup (before you judge ... it was my parents' anniversary and they wanted it), salt baked chicken, baked tofu wih seafood, lobster with noodles and fish stir fry with snap peas.

The fin pieces are the less desirable parts near the body - not the flaky part near the top.  The chicken, although not bad, has a funny taste and I think it's because they wrapped it with paper and topped with salt in the baking process.  It was not bad but I just did not like the flavour personally.  The tofu and the fish are alright.  The lobster pieces are a bit tough (it was a 5-lb lobster after all and they didn't have anything smaller) but the flavour was OK.  Price was reasonable. It only came to just over $150.

I heard that the restaurant is packed during dim sum hours but it certainly wasn't when we were there on a weeknight.

My wife & I ate here 4 times in 3 days, two for dim sum and two for dinner.  All the meals were very good, fresh and tasty.  For dim sum, we had the har gow and shumai along with a dish of steamed or wok cooked vegetables.  For dinner, two different pan fried fish dishes with vegetables, sweet  and sour pork, and broccoli beef.  20% off the dim sum dishes, reduced price dinner dishes at $9.99 and free tea with either meal.  We definitely will be coming back.

HML? More like FML - for wasting one of my limited Vancouver dim sum lunches here.

Having moved to San Francisco two years ago, I've been seriously deprived of good dim sum. This is why I make it a point to go for dim sum at least once whenever I come back to visit mommy. On the recommendation of her friend about their allegedly amazing Portuguese egg tarts here, my mom and I went to HML during my last trip to Vancouver.

What a disappointment! From the food to the service, I was not impressed whatsoever. We had to wait about 5 minutes to be greeted even though there were plenty of workers walking around who saw us come in. We ordered 11 dishes and had to wait an unreasonably long time before anything came. Keeping a hungry Steph waiting? Not a good idea. Even worse, the food was definitely not worth waiting for.

The dishes that we got, in the order that they came (notice that all the desserts came first) and how I could grade them, were:
    1. COCONUT & MANGO PUDDING (http://www.yelp.com/bi...): A; great coconut and mango flavours, creamy, chewy, and not too sweet
    2. GREEN TEA ROLLS with wild yam paste (http://www.yelp.com/bi...): F; the green tea mochi skin was good but the filling had no flavour and had a nasty grainy texture
    3. PORTUGUESE EGG TARTS (http://www.yelp.com/bi...): B; made fresh and yummy custard filling, but the crust wasn't flaky enough and there wasn't enough filling
    4. STEAMED CHICKEN BUNS (http://www.yelp.com/bi...): B; tasty, but not enough chicken (http://www.yelp.com/bi...)
    5. STEAMED RICE WITH CHICKEN, LILY FLOWER & FUNGUS (http://www.yelp.com/bi...): A; yummy tender and flavourful dark meat chicken, lily flower and fungus were great too
    6. STEAMED CHICKEN FEET (http://www.yelp.com/bi...): C; a little bland
    7. STEAMED CUSTARD BUNS (http://www.yelp.com/bi...): B; decent, but a little too sweet and I've had better
    8. STEAMED TURNIP CAKE (http://www.yelp.com/bi...): B; so salty that it didn't need soy sauce at all, but good texture and flavour otherwise
    9. DACE FISH PASTE DUMPLINGS IN FISH BROTH (http://www.yelp.com/bi...): C; meh, nothing special
    10. STEAMED CHIU CHAO DUMPLINGS (http://www.yelp.com/bi...): F; missing the preserved vegetables that make chiu chao dumplings what they are so they lacked flavour and texture; the skin was also way too firm and opaque
    11. STEAMED SHRIMP PASTE WITH EGG TOFU & FISH ROE (http://www.yelp.com/bi...): C; lots of succulent shrimp, but the egg tofu would've been better deep-fried for texture and the bright red roe was unsettling

Overall, really not impressed. There are plenty of other (better) dim sum restaurants in Richmond and Vancouver for me to spend my money and, more importantly, stomach space on.

4.5*.  Don't know why there's all this hate for HML's dimsum.  I'm slowly making my way through the other dimsum restaurants, but HML is my top so far over highly acclaimed Kirin and Sun Sui Wah.  I've been 3 times and always have great food.  To each his own, I suppose.  The prices here are also more reasonable.  They are currently running a promotion of 20% off dimsum and free tea, including weekends and holidays (it used to be just weekdays).  The menu also changes from time to time, which I think is good because they keep up with current tastes.  Bad if they get rid of something you like though!

I suppose that I should note that I'm from Hong Kong, so I don't expect attentive service because that's just not how it is.  Yes, HML is hectic and you have to flag down someone if you want something, but if you want an authentic experience, that's it.  The way you can tell if service is good is how fast your tea pot gets filled once you flip the cover.  HML staff was prompt and even more than prompt sometimes - filling even before the cover was flipped.

I like that they give you a print out of the stuff you ordered so you know what actually went into their system (sometimes the wrong thing is selected and that way you can tell) and you can tell what you still have left coming.  As your food comes, the waiter crosses the item off the list.  I will say that when they're super busy, the waiters sometimes try to serve someone else's food, but by having the list, they can tell you didn't order it.

Things we had this last time:
    - Shark fin dumpling: I'm personally not a fan of it generally but bf enjoyed it more than the one we got at Kirin. Lots of seafood inside.
    - Baked egg and milk tart:  right amount of flakiness and baked just enough that the custard didn't dribble all over the place when you bit into it, but not overcooked. We noticed that every table around us had at least an order of this
    - Salted yolk bun: creamy goodness.  it has a slightly grainy texture because it's made from salted duck egg yolks and they're grainy. They put a lot in the bun so you don't get a lot of dough. Yay.
    - Shrimp dumpling: big and plump. they use a mixture of whole and chopped shrimp inside. i hate when places use frozen shrimp because it leaves a weird taste.  this was definitely fresh.
    - Taro pumpkin cake: interesting mixture of the two flavors. a bit oily because it was panfried but the flavors work well together
    - XO sauce with beef tripe: it's the honey comb tripe. they could have used a bit more XO sauce
-Mango tapioca pudding:  great dessert. wish i wasn't so full that i could have finished it!

I will say that 99% of the customers there were Cantonese (everyone was speaking Cantonese around us) and the restaurant was filled with a bunch of people waiting around noon on Saturday.  When we've gone on a weekday, there are decent amount of older folks there.  These people are probably not Yelpers hence the low ratings on here.

Oh yeah, free parking lot in the back too.
