What do quarantines, helicopter launch pads and wedding trees have in common? They can all be found on Deadman's Island of course! Home of the HMCS Discovery, this is where our naval base is stationed (pardon my idiocy, I don't know if they're actually stationed here).

Over the years I have hung out near the helicopter pad and toasted Canada on our nation's birthday with an endless supply of beer. I've partied on it's government soil, complete with cheap drink prices at a slue of St Patrick's Day parties. I've won costume contests on Halloween. I've waited outside of it's gates, doing the ultimate wait of shame, stranded in the park, last night's shoes in hand, trying to hail a cab. (Somewhere on Facebook lives a chronicle of all of my younger-year debauchery taken from the the other side of those white gates).

With a spit-shine-and-polish this is also the most beautiful and cool place for a wedding that I have seen in a long time! it hosts a view of Stanley Park on one side, Coal Harbour and the Vancouver skyline from the other. The entire wedding was an outdoor affair. Dinner was served under the "Wedding Tree," a thick leaved ceiling that created an atmosphere pulled right out of a fairytale. Big enough to hold 8 table rounds for over 100 people and a dance floor, buffet dinner reception and bar... I'd seriously tell any close friend to consider getting hitched here.

Of course, it goes without saying that the bride and groom were stunning... as for that quarantine bit, I recall the groom telling me years ago that Deadman's Island got it's name because in the 1800's it housed the military's contagious and sick. Many people died here and some say that the hallways are haunted!
