My friend and I came here on one of our day trips to Vancouver.

My first impression walking in was that the place looked old and the wallpaper stained. Honestly, it's probably from the hot pot. It's probably better to have steel and tile in a hot pot spot.

I was really happy that they had so many different soups. My friend and I selected a chive and cilantro one. It was my first time  using this type of broth and I'm totally sold now. They also have a great variety of meat, seafood and vegetables here. The choices were way better than in Seattle. There is also a few desserts (mango pudding and the such) to choose from.

My friend and I had a happy, filling dinner before heading home!

I just arrived to Toronto, not exactly...  Maybe I brought Toronto to Vancouver as everything this morning looked as White & Fluffy as when I left T.O.  One thing that the snow did was it brought in less traffic to HKYK for Dim Sum.  There's probably other factors in play as well but I will let the locals take their pick.

Weekend meant $2.88 pricing but we snuck in the order at 10:59 therefore $2.50 was offered although we did choose a few items that had non-standard pricing.  I am sure all those HK Celebrities that had their photos placed on the wall near the entrance wasn't as budget minded as I was during their Meal.

Disclaimer: My review is mainly focused on the after hour dim sum. The only reason I step into this place is because it's 6pm and my wife is having a dim sum craving. I don't know of any other place with a wide selection and available after 3pm. I'm secretly hoping a fellow yelp'er will help a sister out.

I really wish they would take a scrub brush to this place. Not only is it in serious need of a renovation makeover but they really need to fold down the extension flaps on the smaller tables and clean the cracks of food from time to time. That or use some table cloths. Normally, when I sit at the table I like to rest my forearms on the edge - at this place I keep my arms in my lap. Also, at random intervals they'll blast the place with air conditioning. I understand the need to keep the place cooler and ventilated with all of the hot pots steaming, but other places usually just keep it cool at all times instead of taking their customers on temperature roller coaster.

The dim sum menu is decent but even though I'm usually pretty good at figuring out which ones are my favourites some of their English descriptions leave me scratching my head and I have to ask the waiter. Because it's after-hour dim sum, understandably, it usually takes 20 minutes for them to steam the food and then it just comes en masse.

When we were there last week, however, for some reason they staggered the food. We were literally eating one dish at a time which made for a less enjoyable experience since the point of dim sum is to have some variety of choices as you eat. The food quality and price is decent enough but nothing that's really amazing so I take what I can get considering the time of day. I can't speak to the hot pot menu because it's been quite a while since I've had it here or other places.

I can say that the service is shoddy if you're not having hot pot. The restaurant is pretty big and they like to seat people by the windows which also happens to be at the very opposite end of where the cashier counter is. This makes it impossible to flag down any of the staff who like to hang around the counter until they're needed. The waiters don't think to scan the tables (either physically or with their eyes) to see if the customers need anything.

It's worth noting that they accept debit here. Most places only either take credit and/or cash. Also, for their parking lot, even though they have signs every where saying that it's a pay parking lot, we've never once paid and never been fined for it -- not really sure what that's about.

1 star for having dim sum available all day and night, 1 star for not robbing me blind for making dim sum available at all hours of the day. -3 stars for the cleanliness and service.

When I was there earlier this week, I remember saying "this is what terrible tastes like" after swallowing a bite of the prawn dumpling. That particular dish was terrible! I can tell right away that it was frozen for a while. It was tasteless... well..I guess it could've been worse...

Not everything was as bad as the prawn dumplings though. Everything else we ordered ranged from mediocre (which is the best that this place can offer) to "me thinks not". I ordered "pan fried sticky rice" thinking it was some sort of fried rice, but instead i got a fried rice cake with some ground pork in it. I was surprised when it arrived and did not hesitate to eat it, but it, like the prawn dumplings, had very little taste.

The only thing I enjoyed eating at this restaurant was the prawn spring rolls. Those were good.

The furniture was dirty and one can tell they needed to desperately clean them (it was that noticeable). I can smell the grease in the air too.

Being a hit pot virgin I was totally excited to try this new food adventure. We ordered the chicken and satay broth.

The whole thing was interesting. My friends ordered the fried bread dough dipped in condensed milk to start. YUM. I like that a lot. I would live in a house made of that.

When the hot pot stuff finally came we had an assortment of meats - oysters (word to Mark H for calling them Frankenstein oysters), shrimp, beef, lamb, pork, chicken, fish balls, pork balls, beef balls, fish, tendon, liver  - and then an assortment of veg - watercress, kale, lettuce, tofu.

Everything was really fresh and quite flavourful.

The service was ok - it took a really long time for them to bring everything out to us and they forgot our second order of the fried bread thing. I would do hot pot again - it's fun to fish around for whatever surprise you chuck into the broth.

Late nite dimsum for teh win~

For those with the late night munchies, you can't go wrong here.  The dimsum is decently priced and tastes good.  This place closes at 0230 even on weeknights(!)

On certain nights the back section is closed off and you can hear is the clacking of MJ tiles.  Whether that is legal or not is a totally different question, but why do I care.

If you come earlier in the evening, the Hot Pot option is great.  There is a very wide selection of items, ensuring that many types of animals get sliced up for your eating pleasure.  My personal favourite is the BBQ salmon skin.  The pieces are larger than CDs and are fresh and crispy.  There is a selection of sauces, and everyone leaves happy.

The place is a *little* expensive, but it's nothing too crazy.  Come by for a change of pace.

While I haven't been to many hot pot restaurants I have been to couple and out of the ones that I have been too I'd have to say HKYK is the winner.
While looking both at the outside and inside of the restaurant it dosent look very appealing but as far as menu selection goes, they've got a pretty good one!

Lots of different meats and seafood, veggies, etc...
Aside from the usual hot pot item choices you can also order pan fried rice noodles and soy noodles which tastes pretty good.

The majority of the friends I go with to HKYK love to order the deep fried steam buns, the dipping sauce is to die for!

So, in conclusion if you're looking for a good hot pot place to check out in Richmond, go here.

Food was mediocre, and the staff a bit dense.

Strolled in on a weekday after peak lunch hour (for dimsum) and took them a whole 10 minutes to acknowledge my presence.  Took another 5 minutes to seat me when open tables abound.  Another 10 minutes passed before someone came by to take my order and another 30 minutes more for all my dishes to arrive - I ordered only 5 uncomplicated items.

I had to remind a waiter to bring me chili sauce thrice, and she managed to return with vinegar.

    Go to Kirin instead.

Still haunted by the enormous Frankenstein oysters!

The things I do for love. I've never been a fan of hot pot, but to make the gf happy I caved which led me to this place.

I knew this wouldn't go well when I saw the electric burners. When you do hot pot, you gotta go gas burners! We went for the AYCE and ordered the typical random assortments of meats, seafood, and veggies.

Now came the scary part. I've never ever been a fan of oysters. Slimy, stinky and just plain gross texture, the only way I've ever not gagged is deep fried style. Then these suckers arrived I first thought they were the squid. They were literally the size of a small fist, there's no way that can be natural.

Despite all this I went for a bite. Gag. Just like mussels, bigger does not mean better.

Besides the oysters, everything was below average. Service was really lacking. We never got our water, tea wasn't refilled, and our plates and bowls were never changed once. Tables were awkward and uneven.

No more hot pot for me.

Hmm, I thought Chinese hotpot was dishes cooked in a clay pot then served at your table.  This place was like, shabu shabu style.  I guess that's what HK hotpot is.  Basically, its just a big silver pot on a stove that is placed in the middle of your table.  The bowl is filled with water and seasoning of  your choice.  You then order different veggies and meats, place them into pot and cook yourself.

Nice trick.  They got me.  I was a sucker for their "all you can eat hotpot for $17.99".  But I had no idea I would be charged extra for hotpot seasoning.  Are they serious?  Do they really think customers were suppose to just cook their meat and veggies in plain boiling water?  Tack on another $8.  What do you mean they charge extra for steamed rice?  WTF?  "All you can eat" doesn't cover rice?  Tack on another couple bucks.  This place is total BS.  They charge you for everything.  I'm surprised that they didn't charge me for napkins.

The service here is complete SUCK!  Don't expect to get served.  I had to wait 20 minutes to get steamed rice.  Yes!  20 minutes!  I an Asian restaurant, for crying out loud.  I had to chase down a waiter for everything.  Not once did a waiter come by and ask me if I'd like anything.  I didn't not even get a glass of water until I asked for one at the end of our meal.

Needless to say I gave a crappy tip.  And can you believe, the stupid manager ran out to my car in the parking lot and begged for me to tip higher?  No Shame at all!  I told him, "I'm an American, Jack.  And in America, if you give crappy service then you better expect a crappy tip"!

I recommend staying clear of this place.  Richmond is a filled with so many Chinese restaurants.  I'd take my chances somewhere else if I were you.  Oh  yeah, the food here was... ehhh... average at best.

When your hands and feet are so cold that you can't feel them, it's time for some hot pot.

HKYK is an all you can eat hot pot joint (they also have a la carte). For $17.95, you can go all out and eat all you can. (Hence, the name.)

Don't expect a good atmosphere here. They give you fold out tables, with a electronic heat pad, and you basically cook your own food. Come here with an empty stomach, as you will be stuffed.

It's better if you come in a big group, as you can order more variety, and share everything. It's more fun for hot pot anyways.

Choose your soup base, and there's lots of choices in dishes. Meats (beef, pork, chicken, chicken wings, internal pork, cow organs) veggies (all sorts of veggies available-mushrooms, watercress, lettuce), dumplings, noodles, seafood (fish slices, prawns, oysters)..they even have these yummy deep fried buns served with condensed milk. Order often, order lots.

Plum juice can be ordered by the glass $0.50, or by the pitcher($3), and it accompanies the hot pot well.

Quality of food is ok here, better than some other AYCE hot pot restaurants. There's really bad service here, but I guess the fact being you 'cook your own food', you don't need too much service other than refilling the tea, bringing more soy sauce, getting another order form (ok, maybe you do need some service here.)

Hot pot is satisfying, and you can leave the restaurant warm, with a full stomach.

HKYK's greatest impression for me wasn't its AYCE Hot Pot but rather its tasty Dim Sum.  There aren't carts being pushed around here but its strictly a la carte with a paper and pencil.  Service is great but the food is even better.  The restaurant is simple and deceivingly spacious, complete with tables with a hot pot setup.

Dim Sum is on par with the high standard that sets Richmond apart from other Chinese communities in North America.  A few specific food descriptions worth:

    * Shrimp Dumplings (Har Gao) are juicy, with a tinge of sweetness.
    * Fried Pork Dumplings (Ham Sui Gok) were perfectly crunchy and plenty of meat to boot.
    * Turnip Cakes (Lo Bak Go) are crispy on the outside and moist on the inside.
    * Siu Mai is perfectly steamed, probably one of the best I've had.

I have also been here for their AYCE Hot Pot, which I could technically lower a star here for, but the Dim Sum is just too good.  Hot Pot here is actually a lot of fun with the right group, but it can be pricey.  Another thing that could be improved is their tight parking situation out in their limited lot.  I always make a point to visit this place each time Richmond and I cross paths.

Came here again.  There's not very many places open for lunch that serve Hot pot in this area.  Most are open in the evening.  So I took my brother here to try it out for his first time.

Ordered the Chicken broth and on the other side we had the spicy Szechuan broth. (not that hot really,,, for us anyways).

Things were pretty good, communicating was a bit challenging for us since we're Chinese speaking challenged or CSC as I call it.

We had some trouble trying to order the veggies when they didn't show up for about 30 minutes later.  Another customer translated Spinach and watercress for us and we eventually got our veggies!!

Hot Pot can be healthy, but I have to admit the soups may have MSG, Salt and fatty broth that you may not want.  Also adding meat can change things. You can get the Vegetarian broth which is a better option and just make sure you don't over boil the veggies!

Remember to use separate chopstick when putting meat and food into the pot since it's raw food and don't want it to touch your eating chopsticks.

Although I was beging to go back to Shanghai River for Xiao Long Bao dimsum it was promised that HKYK may have it since the ranting of good food was been plastered all over about this place. I need to adventure out and try it...

We've passed this place so many times when we were traveling between Richmond and Vancouver BC. Always packed so that's a good sign. We decided to have dimsum eats here because as I have heard that some dishes here are the worth the try and I did like the idea of checking off which dimsum you want and them bringing it to your table.

We walk in and the place reminded me of a restaurant in Seattle's Chinatown, not exciting. We were neglected of services but then was apologized to afterwards, and still service was slow but lady who was dropping off dimsum dishes to other tables felt bad and was giving us phenomenal services.

Before ordering we asked if there was Xiao Long Bao but since we weren't Chinese not sure if they understood what I was talking about. So I skimmed the menu and saw something that say "dumpling in Shanghai style" gave me the hint they make it. So we ordered

    1) side of rice
    2) pe-wai (looks like spinich, not sure if spelling is correct)
    3) two orders of Xiao Long Bao - GOOD but not as good as Shanghai River's
    4) Squid dish
    5) Chicken Feet (not my order)
    6) Spare Ribs
    7) Steamed Hombow
    8) two orders of ShuMai

Their Xiao Long Bao wasn't as good as Shanghai River but still good. The dumpling shell started to get stale and hard after sitting there and there wasn't much broth inside the dumpling as I had anticipated. The squid dish was good but can only hang with one piece after getting sick of the taste. The ShuMai was really good here, better then alot of ShuMai's I've had. The chicken feet was not my order... chickenfeet always looks scary on a table. The Spare Ribs was OFF THE CHAINS and SO DELICIOUS here, very suprised the flavor it consisted. And the steamed hombow here was absolutely wonderful. I usually do not order steamed hombow because they all taste the same but their steamed hombow was different and I appreciated it. Our bill came to a total of $36.00 (canadian). Very satisfied.

HKYK is a restaurant that serves hot pot as well as dim sum. Seeing that they had a $2.50 a plate special was probably the main reason that I ended up here. Having not tried dim sum in Richmond, I wanted to see how it compared to dim sum experiences in other cities.

The restaurant from the outside looks sizable and when you walk in, it is very spacious and well spread out. I got to the table and was given an order list to select the items I wanted. It was a bit early as it was a little after 10 am on Sunday, but I wished the service was a bit slow. After the order went through, dishes slowly came to trickle in.

Some dishes were better than others. In particular on the bad side were several of the dumplings which stuck to the bottom. On the good side was the pork congee, beef balls, Chinese doughnut look funn rolls and egg tofu. Overall, the dim sum was a mixed bag. Some were good, some not so much. The ones on the bad side were served warm rather than hot as is preferable.

Total tab came out to a little over $26 dollars for 9 plates which is pretty good considering the locale. I would rate HKYK a 3.5, but am rounding down because of the slow service. As for how HKYK compares to dim sum dining experiences elsewhere, I would say it is one of the better restaurants I have dined at,. This is primarily based off its selection. I would recommend HKYK based off of that.

Okay, after leaving SF with nothing but utter disapppointment about the state of Chinese cuisine, I traveled to Vancouver with lowered expectations.

HKYK is a value dim sum place by day, hot pot place by night. Word is on both accounts, they do pretty well.

I was happy to report that the dim sum is really decent quality with a few dishes not yet seen in Toronto. But the prices really blew me away. 30% off before 11AM and small plates starting at $2.80 plus free parking. A yet the staples all hot and tasty. With the recent Ruby restaurant scare in Toronto, I'm daring to say that value dim sum in Vancouver might blow Toronto out of the water.

Still, the more expensive places in Toronto do outshine Vancouver. But, I have a serious debate on my hands now.

The dimsum is fresh and so awesome!  The prawns are huge in the har gow.  SO good! I love their dim sum.  The service sucks but the food is really good, only if it's seafood though.  Can't beat fresh seafood.  My out-of-town guests just love their food too.  So good!

Compared to the hot pot places available in the SF bay area, this place is really good.  The list of food to choose from is very long.  I particularly liked the thinly slice pork neck meat, fried bean curd and everything else we ordered was good.  There's not much seafood or anything fancy, but for the price you pay, I think it's a good deal.
