The HiVE has a co-working model of shared office space, so that you share the business equipment inside with everyone else. I think it's cool because it offers in office environment, peace and quiet and allows me to get work done faster.
It's better than a coffee shop because you don't have to deal with loud annoying music, nor do you have to keep buying coffees or muffins. The people are there to work, meet each other, and expand their networks.
There are a lot of different types of businesses in the HiVE, from architects to sustainability consultants, so it is a good place to meet other people who might be able to help you in whatever you do.
They have both permanent desks and "hotdesking," which is just showing up with your laptop for a certain number of hours per month (but you can still blast wifi, use the printers and also meeting room time, so it's actually pretty really cheap).
They're also right on Hastings Street and in a cool neighborhood just east of Cambie. if you are the kind of person who needs an office space and also a cool, fun, and inviting environment, then the hive is for you. -

I am so down with HiVE. This non-profit co-working space is the coolest idea since sliced bread. It's a fancy modern office environment with rad socially conscious politics. Individuals and small businesses can rent space here that comes with a downtown Vancouver mailing address and boardroom access for meetings without renting a full office, which is out of the price range of most creative individuals.
HiVE is great for short-term projects that require the use of meeting and office space, or for part-time contract work that requires a desk. Also, being surrounded by inspiring and hard-working dedicated professionals, many of them in the creative industries, is great for the work ethic - as is paying for the space you use.
The kitchen here is off the hook, too. I see it and just want to make big vegan meals for 40+ in it. Oh lawdy.
Other bonuses: indoor bike storage, drop-in hourly desk rentals, great views, private telephone rooms, two dishwashers.
If you're a creative professional, contract worker, or are working on a big project and can't focus at home, give HiVE a chance! I was frankly amazed at how much work I got done during the time I spent there. I originally planned on just renting hourly but found it so beneficial for my work ethic that I bought a membership.
