Comfortable hotel with large rooms, soft-feeling, yet ultimately firm beds, great water pressure and free wifi. Sure, your view is of the nearby industrial area, and the hotel doesn't have much decorative charm, but the staff is friendly. The bar also has a few beers from the local Fort Garry brewery on tap. I will gladly stay here the next time I'm in Winnipeg.

Two real problems with the room, so much that I hesitate to post the issue and ruin their rep, for which they at least made matter right by changing my room and tossing in a good buffet breakfast. Slow as mollasses internet. Pricy items like $4 bottles of water and +$15 cigs... marshmellow pillows.

Up shot: nice staff, clean odor free rooms, comfy beds (alas mushy pillows), decent TV, quiet (minus the hum of an electrical closet in the last room). Good food (but a bit pricy)... Hopeful next time will be better?

This place was home for months and I must say that the staff was super nice and helpful.

Location: Its walking distance from the airport but please dont plan on walking. There is no side walk for most of the way. They do have a shuttle service that prevents you from hitching a $5 cab ride and have a pleasant conversation with the driver about the harsh lineup he had to endure for your business which wasn't really worth it. And yes...you will hear about it even if its 3am. There is a big mall close by and most of the big box stores but you are better of getting there by car. The bombers stadium is in the area as well.

Front Desk: A friendly group of people that I got to know on a first name basis by the end of my stay. They were accomodating about sudden changes in my itenerary. They have a luggage storage service if you are returning in a couple of days which is really useful.

Parking: Tons of parking in front and behind the hotel but its all outdoor with power outlets for your heater.

Room: All the rooms are actually suites with a mini-fridge and microwave. A kitchenette or even just basic utensils would have been nice. Unlike Laura, I didn't ask for crockery and cutlery. But then a pretty girl always get better treatment! And for all the equal right activists out there, thats a compliment btw. But it sure would have helped to have a few basics.

Restaurant: The place is good for breakfasts. They have healthy options and thats always good to see. For dinner however, its a bit different. I found the place to be a bit pricy and it took forever and I mean forever for food to arrive. They pride themselves for their Manitoba Pickrel which was overcooked and took atleast 70 minutes to arrive. Not fun when you want a quick dinner and sleep. Their nachos, pasta and burgers are okay. Stick with pub food and you'll be fine. I have heard a lot of complaints on the wait and the portions for their dinner. The bartender however is really nice and let me borrow his corkscrew and bottle opener for a few nights!

Healthclub/gym: The gym was located right next to the indoor pool and has basic cardio and weight equipment. The place is very small though and they could have made better use of the space nearby. There is an an outdoor pool as well along with a sauna.

Overall: Based on my hotel experiences in Winnipeg, this is where I would return if I am in town. The helpful staff is prolly one of the biggest things going for them.

My mom used to bring me here for lunch after shopping in Polo Park. Like that 1970's shopping institution it looked modern for it's time.

30 something years later and the Hilton has moved on. It still shows its age in the hallways or some of the parts of the rooms.

Normally, those factors would mean that the interior is atrocious and a bad time would be had by all.

However, this hotel has moved on and the size of the multiple rooms make this my default place to stop in when flying to Winnipeg. I may move the next night - but not having to fight against the growing winnipeg traffic jams to get to a city centre hotel is definitely worth it.

It's week2 and I am very pleased with the service and hospitality I have gotten here.

I had some issues, and contacted the Sales Manager (graziella.hicks@hilton...) who was super helpful in solving my issues

    - cigarette smell in my room: she immediately asked for a deep cleaning and ozone purfying of my room. Now it smells like a new car and I can't complain
    - bed too soft: she asked maintenance to put a wooden board underneath the bed, and a mattress pad. they also gave me firmer foam pillows - I sleep like a baby now
    - housekeeping was slacking off in cleaning my room (only changed bed and replaced towels - nothing was neatened/straighted out, my dirty plates and cutlery still lying around all weekend): she spoke to housekeeping supervisor, and next day, it was properly done. Then the housekeeping got a tip.

Also, they are super willing to help. i.e. I can call and ask for a spoon at 10pm at night, and someone brings it up to me without asking for tip/service charge (unlike say, the Doubletree Hotel -also hilton- in toronto)

Since there is a microwave and fridge, I bought foods and I want to eat them. It would be nice if the hotel left me a set of cutlery, a bowl, mug and plate with some soap and a dish towel, so I don't have to keep asking the restaurant.  But they are still really helpful - I ask for random things and they gladly give it me (even a french onion soup bowl for my noodles)
The crappy thing, is that I have to keep asking for it, or have it cleaned. I don't mind doing it myself, but I don't have the means. If they have some things there, I wouldn't have to make my oatmeal the styrofoam cup.

I really want to give it 4 stars, except I was so disappointed in the housekeeping and consistency I have to give it 3. Even a borderline 2.

    OVERALL
    Friendliness: 4.5
Workout facilities: 1 - tiny and can barely lie down on a mat in here
    Pool/outdoor pool: 3
Food - 3 A-ok (price a little expensive, food was quite good tho)
    Cleanliness:  4
Housekeeping: 2 can really do better
Location : 3 - I mean in Winnipeg you'll have to rent a car away. This hotel is not far away from the city centre, and you're going opposite traffic. And there is a safeway and mall close by.

Rooms : they are all suites 4.5 stars. Kitchenette + separate bedroom and sitting area. Minus .5 for terrible little fridge that melts all the time.

Would I recommend to a friend? Probably.

This review is for Bistro 1800, the Hilton Suites' restaurant. Food wise, this place rates about a 2.5 stars but the service is super friendly and nice so I'll give them a 4 for that.

The irony is that I never dine at hotel restaurants when I travel so it's quite amusing that we ended up at a hotel restaurant for lunch. The restaurant is open from 6 am to 10 pm daily. We opted for the "all day dining" menu with soups and salads $6-$14 and sandwiches/pastas $12-$18. Their dinner entrees are more in the $26-$36 range - kinda pricey so I hope it's good. The food offerings will please most palates as it has a mix of  traditional, local Canadian, new American and international dishes.  I tried their "peppered Philly beef melt" ($13) - basically an open faced Philly cheese steak but with certified angus beef strips sauteed onions, peppers, mushrooms in a demi-glace and with melted pepper jack cheese on a toasted garlic baguette. The beef was extremely tender and the demi-glace was rich and delicious; though the sauce drenched the baguette making it very soggy. With some restraint on the amount of demi-glace on the baguette and less cheese, this would've have been a better dish. I opted for the house salad with a balsamic vinaigrette instead of the fries and I got a very generous portion of mixed greens, cucumbers and tomatoes. The salad helped balance this very heavy dish!

The "classic bistro burger" ($12) is a half pound certified angus beef with all the typical toppings, and a slice of cheese for $1 extra. The burger was pretty average, it didn't taste like they made it in house. The fries were very crispy and there was a very generous portion given.

Service was very friendly and warm - something one would expect from a hotel. It was a casual and laid back atmosphere; though they could improve on the decor. I am not sure why all hotel restaurants are decorated in a way that they scream "HOTEL." A little personality would be nice. There's windows all around the restaurant but there is no view on Wellington Avenue so it felt quite dreary and cold.
