Review from Cynthia F.
Toronto, ON
It's been many years since I've visited this vet, so my review may be outdated. I really hope that isn't the case, as these vets were one of the best vets I've ever had the chance to encounter. Before moving to Victoria, I'd spent weeks interviewing vets on the phone in Vancouver and Victoria with specific questions about their approach to holistic medicine and their knowledge level when it came to animal care; I chose this clinic eventhough it was out of the way from where I lived because they were the most highly regarded in their field. I then interviewed them, took my pets for regular check-ups, and was very happy, but what really wiped the slate clean as far as vet clinics go (and unfortunately spoiled all future vets for me), was their handling of a minor emergency involving my cat.
I have two cats; one is skittish but for good reason, and the other is a clown who constantly gets into trouble. I had to rush the clown into surgery one day because he decided to launch himself at the neighbour's cat and teach her a lesson. The problem was that there was a glass window separating him from his intended target. He crashed through the pane glass window, giving himself a concussion and tearing off a substantial piece of skin on his nose. I ran outside to grab him, and could barely remember the name of our vet, let alone their phone number, in my panic.
I managed to get a cab who would actually take my bleeding cat and its panicked owner (the cabbie was amazingly kind) to the vet. The vet (no longer at Hillside, unfortunately) was kind, brisk and didn't mince words. He warned me that they might not be able to stitch my cat's beautiful nose up properly since there is low blood flow to the wound area. I gulped and prepared to receive a recovered, but possibly scarred cat on my return.
Instead, when I picked my cat up, his nose was covered in blue micro stitches, so small as to seem unnoticeable. Lionel (my stupid cat) healed perfectly; the only sign of his altercation is a slight deviation in fur pattern on his nose. There isn't even a visible scar -- they were that good.
The real selling point for me, though, is that the vet offers a holistic approach, as well, from a pragmatic standpoint (i.e., holistic medicine in conjunction with conventional medicines: the approach is to treat underlying conditions and cure the illness, rather than treat the symptoms). There is a vet who is a trained accupuncturist (Dr. Chan), who I hadn't visited, but who is highly regarded.
Eventhough it's been so many years since I lived in Victoria, I still miss this clinic and its caring, compassionate, thoroughly knowledgeable vets. Would that every clinic were this amazing -- we'd have no need to review vets at all!
