I'm loving this new shop with quality local ingredients and staff/owners who obviously care.
Sidenote: Curse you Chelsea for stealing my first to review! I never should have told you about it! ;) (just kidding)
I've only been in twice, once just to check it out and once for one of their excellent sandwiches. Their is a good selection of quality (much of it locally produced) goods on display in the shop and I was tempted by many of the items I saw but alas, I was only there for a quick sandwich for lunch. I was given an overview of the cheeses available and where many of them were sourced from (many from their very own cheese shop, and I imagine dairy farm) in the Cowichan Valley.
The sandwich was fantastic. Smoked applewood cheddar with roasted turkey and grainy dijon on Fol Epi bread (possibly the best bakery in the city). I don't often order sandwiches, but this was not your average sandwich. Fantastic bread, very nice turkey, excellent cheese, punchy tasty grainy dijon, greens, red bell peppers and cucumbers. With some of their nearby neighbours charging so much more for so much less of a sandwich, I was thrilled with what I got for $7.
If you're walking up Fort St. past antiques row, I definitely recommend checking out Hilary's Cheese. -

I am so glad I walked in here! I had heard from a friend about this place. I found myself wandering around trying to decide what to grab for a snack with my Mom yesterday and presto! Hilary's!
I walked in and was really pleased with the layout, and beautiful displays of local food goodies. In response to a cheerful hello from the back, I told the girl I had heard from a friend, and it was my first time in. She got really excited, and was delighted to tell us all about their own cheese, as well as some of her favorite foods from other locals that they carry.
We were sad to find that they were out of sandwiches for the day, but it was past 5, so that's understandable. We tried the farmers plate, full of meat, cheese artisan crackers, Greek dolmades, and my favorite, 2 tasty deli mustards. We were both very happy campers with this rustic snack for $8.50. We finished it off with one of their unbelievable butter tarts to share.
I can't wait to go back. I'll be sure to get some fresh curd next.
