Yum! I had a crazy craving for crepes and this place definitely fulfilled it!
I came here with my bf a month ago (i know, it was a month ago and i'm doing a review now?) and i recall ordering a crepe with a lot of spinach and mushrooms, as well as different kinds of cheese. It was absolutely delicious though! I will definitely never forget how crunchy and tantalizing the crepe was, and in combination with the ooey gooey cheese and moist spinach, it definitely worked.
My bf got the classic crepe, and it was definitely just as wonderful as mine was. It was pretty surprising how it was just one person doing all the work, but he is amazing for making such great savory crepes.
The only thing that sucks is that this place doesnt accept card :/ but it's okay, i'll definitely be back to try their sweet crepes! -

After a relaxing mani/pedi at Glen Park Nails, my boyfriend, sister and I decided to head over here for a late lunch. Higher Grounds Coffee House is more of a brunch type place since they have a full kitchen behind the counter cooking up crepes and all sorts of good stuff. It had a nice laid back feel with the burlap sacks as the ceiling and the dark wooden furniture.
My boyfriend and sister ordered crepes while I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich. Just a friendly FYI: They have sandwiches listed on the plates hanging from the actual menu! :) Oh, and this place is CASH ONLY. My grilled cheese was delicious! I wish the outsides weren't so dark, but wow, the actual sandwich was pretty good! They used provolone and cheddar cheese which was nice. The salad, which tasted like they tossed it in some sort of sweet dressing, was also nice and refreshing. The potatoes.. oh don't get me started on the potatoes! They were oh so yummy and perfectly crispy and warm! Mm. :) My only complaint(s) would be that the parking is metered, but you can easily access Higher Grounds through public transportation. Also, the plates were a bit pricey! ($8-$11 range) Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and will be back. -

Everytime I get to Glen Park, this is where I go and if it is open.
My OG coffee house for the decade of the '90s LOL! The coffee is good, the crepes are the best and the staff, lovely, just lovely! -

Pros: ordered strawberry crepes & croissant French toast. Both were good, but not necessarily off the charts. Need to try other items on menu to do a complete review.
Cons: meter parking, cash only
Observations: set-up is nothing fancy, but clienteles are fairly eclectic, which adds ambiance to the place. One person shop, who is impressively great at multitasking with a pleasant personality. -

Great combination crepes and omelets. It's tiny and quirky on the inside, but that adds to the charm. My understanding is that the owner opened a really good Italian restaurant just a few doors up the street.
I've not eaten there yet but it's been recommended and from the outside looking in, it's clean and simple decor looks modern and inviting. -
Review from Nina M.
A wonderful tiny establishment for breakfast or brunch.
No bells & whistles here, just freshly made food and a friendly atmosphere.
The menu features savory and sweet creeps as well as omelets.
There are also croissants and bagels if you just want a snack with your coffee.
We ordered regular house coffee & were pleased with the flavor.
All the cooking is done single-handedly by one man who is simultaneously taking orders, yet he manages to be cheerful and gets the job done!
I recommend the savory (chicken delight) crepes which come with house potatoes, salad, and toast.
My only suggestion to the chef would be to add some spices/seasoning to the potatoes and perhaps keep them cooking a bit longer for a more crisp shell.
Great spot for a week-end brunch! -

This place was amazing. It's tiny, but they have a huge list of crepes and other delectable offerings. I had the spinach, mozzarella crepe with eggs and it was pretty amazing. I don't normally like crepes, but it was so light and the filling was so well done that it was just a thin veiling over a pile of unbelievably fluffy eggs and spinach. It was served with a mesclun mix that had a super light coating of dressing, but it was so delicious.
My boyfriend had their croissant french toast which also blew my mind. I am not a fan of french toast, but this was ethereal, sweet, with loads of fresh strawberries and cinnamon.
The owner prepared our meals and he was the only one at the counter, which meant that it took a lil longer than most, but each dish was well-crafted by someone who cares - you could tell with each bite. -
Review from Binh D.
Food: Good coffee and great crepes.
Ambiance: Small little wood shack like cafe, very cozy.
Service: There are only two people working and if they are busy it's a little slow, but not too bad and definitely worth the wait.
Price: CASH ONLY! A little more then $10 a person with tax and tip.
Overall: The place to visit if you're in Glen Park and want a crepe. -

I've often questioned why more coffee shops don't serve real food & not just continental breakfast fare. Sure seems to be a missing niche that if done right could really work for a business.
Higher Grounds does both well, coffee bar and food. They not only serve crêpes but also omelets. Just learned today that if you see a crêpe special listed on their board, you can turn it into an omelet for $1 more. Can you say YES!!!?
Having Celiac disease, crêpes are a no-no for me, so I was excited that was an option!
The coffee drinks are solid and the omelets were tasty, with large portions for both the drinks and the food.
I've committed to only giving 5 stars to a place that has outstanding, stellar customer service. There's no complaints about the service here, it's been consistent during all visits, just nothing stands out as the proprietors appear to be husband & wife who could use some help behind the counter but have chosen to do it all themselves and are a bit harried. Hence, my solid four star review.
But, hey, it works for them, I have no complaints. -

Very slow service. Otherwise, it's five stars.
Weird experience though:
The bf and I walked in and saw 2 people ahead of us. So he decided to sit while I order. This one customer (who was in line,) told my bf that he couldn't sit there bc they were there first. "The policy," she said, "is no reserving. You have to order first." We didn't know better bc it was our first time there. Turns out, it's complete bullshit. I took a picture of those bitches, but shouldn't post it.. It would be mean. Other than that, it would have been a very lovely first experience.
Onto the food... Like other reviews: amazing crepes. Had the shrimp crepe and croissant french toast. Heaven. Worth the extra 5 hours in the gym. -

I wish Higher Grounds Coffee House was in Denver. My wife and I stopped in to grab a cup of coffee, and decided that we had to try the food. I got the apple cheddar crepe which was amazing!
They guy working, maybe the owner, was very friendly and at one point ran down to the store to get more apples, which I got a kick out of.
We will definitely be going back next time we are in S.F. -

Crepes are just not my thing; after enduring my sister's attempts at crepe making for years when she picked a crepe making class to learn to cook, I thought I had had my last crepe meal. However, I must admit that I enjoy eating at this place at leat twice a month....
The service is not bad; it's not the greatest but it's not bad...the owner is the cook so im sure if he fucks something up, he'll make it good.
I've had the Chicken Delight, the French Toasts and a couple of other things from the menu and I can't complain, everything is made on the spot; nothing is greasy; the ingredients are simple and fresh. I will admit that although everything tastes good, the ingredients could be better. Example: I suspect that the strawberries used on the French toasts are from a can but like the great Johny Cockren once said: " if it doesn't fit, you must acquit"
The coffee is good and hot! There's only one thing worse than a cup of piss-warm coffee and that's a cup of warm piss ( not that I've ever drank one)
Anyway, if you're around the neighborhood, give this place a shot, chances are you'll like it; I guarantee you they are wayyyy better than my sister's crepes
Peace out! -

New York, NY
When I lived in Glen Park, I came here for brunch nearly every week. Now I'm in New York, but every time I go back to San Francisco I stop at Higher Grounds. The crepes are to die for, especially the Simply Italian. The potatoes are boiled and then fried for perfect crumbly-crunchy texture. Even the side salad is delicious. And yes, it's a LOT of food.
The owner does all the cooking and somehow manages to find time to chat with everyone who comes in. I'm there once every year or two and he always recognizes me and exclaims, "Long time no see!" If I could import Higher Grounds to New York, I would do it in a heartbeat.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I was in the area and needed a coffee so I thought I'd give Higher Grounds a try. I ordered a mocha and it was just ok. There was nothing really bad with it but there was also nothing really memorable about it. The espresso had a decent flavor and the powered chocolate used for the mocha was ok. The barista mixed it with the espresso before pouring the steamed milk so there was a good balance... but again it was just ok. If given the choice I'd rather go to Bello down the street for my espresso fix.

Loved-loved-loved the florentine crepe with potatoes and salad. The salad dressing is amazing. I asked what the nutty flavor was, well they're not telling anyone. Have to say it's one of my all time favorites. If they were to bottle it, I would buy. Latte's were top notch. Loved KCSM playing while I enjoyed a warm afternoon late lunch.
Time and money well spent.Listed in: Top Restaurants

Love this place. I go here at least once a week to enjoy the savory crepes that Manhal (the owner) makes. People that work here are friendly, food is made with love and it tastes delicious. I have been coming here for past 6 years and every single time I leave satisfied and filled. :)

my first time alone in SF, I yelped for a place to eat breakfast and Higher Grounds popped up.
Not used to the hilly street parking so i had to turn around a couple of times to find a parking space I was confident I could fit into (this is for all the decent, but cant really park drivers out there)
I ordered a Croissant French Toast that came with Strawberries and Whipped Cream + the expresso for about $10. Thought it would be tasty since it was the biggest font on the menu. i was right--it was fluffy, very eggy. loved it, too bad i had to enjoy it alone. place was cute; decor with beanbags and duck pictures?
seating was kind of awkward, i felt like I was sharing the table with 5 other people.
service--super friendly (:
parking--good in the morning, probably way worse at night.
price--i guess reasonable for SF, expensive for LA
also, you pay right up front, so I guess you don't really need to tip, but you should [: friendly folk. -
Review from Peter L.
One of my favorite brunch places in the City and would usually suggest, or would go if invited, hah! Everything I've tried has been good here and even though there are four chalkboards of menu items, they don't overwhelm you with choices.
Normally, I'd pick a basic crepe - adding fillers - but a pre-set savory crepe is just as good (it all depends on how hungry or adventurous you are). Yet, it's the sweet crepes that bring me back. Oh, the coffee is amazing and they sell the beans if want some to take home.
This place is popular with the locals, which is an extension of the entire area really. So, it isn't too hip for you and feels cozy and welcoming. Wished the place was bigger as it does feels cramped and divy, and so the wait could be long at times. There is a couple of tables for outdoor seating. The entire experience makes it worthwhile to go out of the way for. -

Had breakfast on three successive days here when visiting friends in Glen Park. Intimate and comfy. Very nice owner/cook and his staff. Delicious french toast made from a croissant with strawberries and also had a couple crepes. Fresh stuff and nicely hand made. Would definitely return when in the area.

Find yourself on a rainy day needing some shelter and maybe a nice cup of brew? Well Higher Grounds is right around the corner from the Twin Peaks base and able to provide a bit of warmth (even if it can't provide 100% shelter from the rain as it has its leaks and charms)
But a nice cup of copy to chill in a spot like this is always comforting. Staff is cool. The leaky windowsills actually gives it some sort of character. But pretty much its your average place or local go to coffee shop. Food looked pretty good, but that will have to looked in closer on my next visit. -

I'm happy I discovered this quaint little coffee shop in the Glen Park neighborhood. The shop owner greeted all his customers warmly, and didn't bat an eye when I walked in 10 minutes before closing time. The shop itself reminds me of my grandma's den - warm and cozy. I paruse the menu and make a mental note that I must return one day for breakfast because their crepe menu looks delicious.
I opted for a dessert crepe: apple cheese. I've never had apples and cheese together in a dish before, but I took a risk and I was not disappointed. Like all their crepes, the shop owner hurriedly chopped up all the ingredients and made it fresh, on the spot. I tasted carmelized apples, brown sugar, cinnamon and of course, cheese. I don't know how or why, but it worked. And paired with a foamy latte (w/ cinnamon sprinkled on top), it was sweet perfection. With classical music playing in the background, and no other sounds other than the occassional passing car, it was a peaceful escape from my typical hectic schedule.
Shops like these make me miss the one-on-one human interaction that chain coffee shops sorely lack with their impersonal "assembly line approach". I'll most definitely be back! -

Tired of forever long waits and pricey brunches? Unlike the unavoidable downsides of 99% of decent brunch restaurants, you will get served delicious crapes and breakfast within minutes after your order without stretching your wallet. With only one chef cooking every item on the menu starting from peeling potatoes, cooking crapes, putting together salad, to plating, and one waitress waiting all tables while making coffees and working at the cash register, I'm obligated to give them kudos!
We had flavorful curry crape and fresh Hawaiian crape in this cute restaurant surrounded by a handful of other small shops and restaurants in West Portal. What I also loved about this place was that it gave me a sense of eating at somebody's house...maybe because of its rustic character.
Cons: 1. Cash only
2. Their hot chocolate was so bland. -

I love love love this place. There are many great places for brunch in San Francisco but many gets busy and hectic (mama's, brendas etc). What I like about Higher grounds is that the menu is small, food is simple but amazing and its very relaxing so I can enjoy my meal without feeling rushed. If you do come though, come when you're not in a rush because theres only one person working and it takes a little while for the food to come out. I highly recommend the veggie crepes more than the ones with meat. I love the Alla Milanese and the Punusscata?(dont remember how to spell) but its very good!!!!!

I was craving Eggettes and the bf was craving crepes. No problem, I know for a fact there's a crepe place in Glen Park. It's a cozy, rustic cafe that serves breakfast items. Ceiling is covered with burlap bags to add to the ambiance. The menu is written on a chalk board and specials are written on paper plates and displayed. One special caught my eye, bread pudding french toast- I'll have to come back another time for that!
The bf got his Nutella & Banana fix. The crepe was nice and crisp and the whipped cream on the side was homemade, I'm assuming. It was thick, creamy and sweetened perfectly! I'd give this place a try for breakfast one day. -
Review from Marina N.
This little shop has the best crepes in town. I know what an excellent crepe should taste like but I assumed crepes were easy breezy so any crepe shop would do a fine job. I was so wrong - I have found completely inedible crepes around town (I literally threw them away after 2 bites) and awful awful fillings. This place makes crepes as they should be such that even without a filling, you would enjoy eating it. And of course their fillings are delicious.
After tasting around town, the only other crepes I liked were a completely different style (Bretagne style) but the fillings were awful (and I encountered jerk staff and a long wait).1 Previous Review: Show all »

Either my expectations or their prices have gone up since my first five star visit. Still digging the space (rustic cafe tucked into a corner of this charming neighborhood), and the service remains top notch friendly. And you (or at least me) gotta love being egg white friendly on the breakfast crepes.
But for $10, I need to be either blown away, or receive enough food for two meals. Neither happened, so for breakfast, my enthusiasm is a little more subdued at three stars.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Great spot to read a book and watch a person or two as they walk by. It's as if you are in a small town in Tahoe. Thats the vibe I get here. Food is terrific! The chef is a nice guy and never makes you feel unwelcome. When I'm here I feel like I am in my own ktichen. Its a very comforting place that I plan on frequenting as long as I live in Glen Park.
The only thing I can critique is that it would be nice if he had another chicken crepe, that is as addicting as the current one. ;) -

San Francisco, CA
This place has a very homey rustic feeling to it. It's not very big, but honestly doesn't need to be. I happened to stumble upon it while in the neighborhood. I came here on my birthday, but had no intention of doing so prior. I was actually desperately craving for crepes, hoping to grab some on Irving, and couldn't find any parking. I have no idea why I ended up around the Glen Park area, but I'm glad I did.
I ordered the Chicken Delight as I'm a proud carnivore and I like to eat chicken. It was really the only crepe dish with chicken, unless I added chicken to another. It was very tasty and the crepe itself was well-made. Make a note that the seats are incredibly tight. As in, I heard every single thing the guy next to me said with his party. I became more self conscious about what I was discussing. But it's okay, it's good food. There's not many crepe places that can make crepes well. But, this is one of them! -
Review from Hannah C.
A very cozy charming corner cafe with a rustic feel of wooden panels and a ceiling covered with burlap bags. 2 small tables outside, and 9 small ones inside. You would only find 2 or 3 friendly men running this place, cooking, serving, and cashiering. The menu is small with more savory options than sweet but the food is consistent and very delicious.
I love the way Higher Grounds makes its crepes. They are super thin and crispy without being crunchy. My usual are their dark bold flavored house coffee and a delicious sweet crepe filled with thinly sliced apple, white cheddar cheese, and cinnamon brown sugar. These men just know how to deliver the perfectly balanced crepe that's not too sweet and never too cheesy. Maybe I should marry one of them so I could have tasty crepes every day. :-) (http://www.yelp.com/bi...)
On this visit, I decided to depart from my usual and went with a strawberry crepe and whipped creme. They were very accommodating and had no problem with me wanting to swap out the cinnamon brown sugar that came with my order and replacing it with a light smear of the Nutella. This was another tasty crepe. Where there's Nutella, food would taste better. Right? (http://www.yelp.com/bi...)
The bf went with the Alla Milanese crepe (tomato, eggplant, mozzarella, onion, black pepper, oil olive, and spices) that came with potatoes and a salad. It was like eating pizza fillings without the thick heavy crust. It's one of my few favorite savory crepes at Higher Grounds. (http://www.yelp.com/bi...)
My cousin had the Salsa omelet which also came with potatoes, a salad, and toast. Hugh and thick portion of perfectly cooked eggs stuffed with black olives, tomato, cheese, onion, and topped with avocado, salsa, and sour cream. (http://www.yelp.com/bi...)
So far this is the only place where I would get my apple cheese crepe. -

Growing up, during summer vacation, my Mom shuffled me between the homes of various family friends while she worked fulltime. My favorite place to go was the J family.. they had 4 kids, a Dad who worked in the woods, & stay-at-home Mom, Evie.
They owned a TV, but it was kept unplugged in a distant closet & hooked up once every few weeks for Nova, then put away. All laundry was hung outside. Evie made everything from scratch, including pizza crust & bread. And she had no problem turning the kitchen over to 2 girls under the age of 9 to let us bake & ice our own messy cakes on rainy days. They used only Ivory soap, & listened to NPR (their house was the 1st place I ever heard it, I think). After dinner, they'd all linger at the table while Dad read aloud (usually something funny). Evie was the 1st person I knew who was part of a co-op, where she'd go to buy carob chips & dried bananas out of the back of someone's station wagon. They had no matching silverware. Their record player spun a lot of classical music & a little Peter, Paul & Mary.
I. Loved. This. Family. I sometimes wished they'd adopt me. Their house was my favorite place, because it was full of energy & love & creativity & intelligence.
Entering Higher Grounds for the 1st time, I was instantly transported back in time to Evie's kitchen. The wood walls, the unfussiness, the classical music.. & some unidentifiable thing that gave me the almost exact same vibe. So if any of the above rings true for your childhood as well, you may very well feel at home here.
I'm in love with their apple & cheese crepe. & I also really like the homefries (or, um, cubed & fried potatoes, whatever the current term is). Pot of jasmine tea & I'm a very happy girl.Listed in: Glen Park/Sunnyside

You know how when you're in a new relationship you overlook the small stuff and you can't seem to get enough of your new love? That's how I feel about this place lately, so I overlook the fact that the tables aren't always spotless and that this isn't my usual type of restaurant. I find myself craving the same thing over and over.
The food is consistently fresh and delicious. I haven't found anything like it on the peninsula, so I stop by when I'm in the city for a fix. Yes, it's that good.
Note: If you're OCD or picky and don't like your food touching each other, let them know or don't eat here. The crunchy salad, home-fried potatoes, and crepe are all touching on the plate (fortunately, it doesn't bother me).Listed in: Pancakes, Waffles, & Crepes,…

Bloomfield, NJ
When I'm feeling sad, I eat. Happy? I eat. Depressed? I cry, then eat. Excited? I double time eat. After taking my nursing boards I was a nervous wreck. I had such heightened anxiety when I realized that I wouldn't find out the results of my test in 48 hours since there was a subsequent holiday and weekend following immediately after. My dad knows that when little Justine gets in this state there is only one cure to my woes, at least momentarily, and that is with crepes. (Broken heart BTW, is Mexican and margaritas.) "Banana crepe with brown sugar and cinnamon please." I don't even need to ask for extra whip cream. They can see in my eyes that I need it. Bring on the sugar. And when I get my cappuccino it is made to perfection as always. Daddy knows I'm happy!
Higher grounds comforts me. It's like my room, which everyone whose been in it refers to as the little log cabin. It is even as cold as my room! That's double comfort! You can sit inside or outside and I often bring my bratty bratty Ruby Tuesday with me. Dog friendly always gets points in my book.
Both the dinner and the dessert crepes are delicious. I am partial to the pesto, chicken with sun dried tomatoes on a daily basis. Their home fries are pretty good as well. I like the burned chunks. Personal preference!
And yes for those who were wondering I passed my test! -
Review from Mike C.
The line at La Corneta was waaay too long and I wasn't in the mood for Tyger's. This was the next option. It's a tiny spot just below Chenery Park Restaurant and above Le P'tit Laurent with roughly eight tables for two inside and one or two outdoor tables. The menu consists of a variety of omlettes (not that many choices) and crepes (savory or sweet). Most dishes range between $8.00 and $10.00. My choice was the Canneloni ($9.95) which was filled with cottage cheese, spinach, and mushroom while topped with a tangy marinara sauce. All savory crepes come with salad and house potatoes. The crepe and potatoes were pretty tasty, but the salad dressing left a strange aftertaste in my mouth. Most other diners were here for a leisure lunch and, if you have a pet, you can just eat outside.
Nice back up spot for breakfast or brunch. -
Review from Fancypants X.
San Francisco, CA
Higher Grounds is tucked away in the cute little neighborhood by Glen Park Bart. I like that there are more parking options in this neighborhood than most other SF spots.
I've been coming to this spot for years and the food always wows me. Their menu is written on a chalkboard and is a little hard to read, but you'll understand it all after the second or third time you return (because you will undoubtedly return!) The florentine can either be made into a crepe or omlette and comes with well seasoned potatoes. Their drinks are amazing-the freshly squeezed OJ is really fresh, the hot chocolate is creamy and rich and their coffee is aromatic.
The ambiance is original and fun. It's a tiny cafe with a lot of character.
Higher Grounds does not take credit cards so have small bills in hand.
I think the owner is also the cashier and the chef, so be patient; The food does take a little longer than most places to come out because of the one man show, but it comes out hot and fresh and delicious. Also, do like the "regulars" do and bus your own table. It' s just the thing to do.
Great place to bring out-of-towners. -

I could tell you all about this place and how I ate there several times and didn't like the food or how the bathroom cleanliness is not a priority, but instead I'll tell you just one thing:
The owner of this place sent me a profanity-filled tirade because he didn't like my previous review. I think 'Marketing for Dummies' recommended that strategy as a way to improve your cash flow.
