Call me spoiled thanks to the likes of St. Lawrence Market and the farmer stands at Trinity Bellwoods, but it was a bit underwhelming for a first visit. I appreciate the convenience and proximity to my home, but the prices and selection weren't the greatest.

Mainly I noticed that there was a lack of fruit but this may be due to my exotic (literally) preferences when it comes to fruit. With the exception of bananas everything was local - they have grapefruit, apricots, strawberries and pears but all were incredibly expensive - even out of my price range and I buy a shit ton of fruit. Like $4/lb. for apricots. Too much.

    I didn't see any apples - am I blind?

They did have an interesting assortment of vine tomatoes - I picked up some colourful yellow, orange and standard red on-the-vine tomatoes for some creative salads I'm hoping to throw together this week. I also nabbed some dandelion greens (eating them will apparently prove to my liver that I don't actually hate it, according to my acupuncturist).

For organics and fresh fruit in the High Park area I'll stick to The Sweet Potato and John's Fruit Village for much better prices!

Tucked away beside the west side of the Grenadier Restaurant, the High Park Organic Farmers' Market operates from spring to fall, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. There's a fair selection, although it's not a particularly big operation, and you'll be paying extra for the "organic" part.

The produce is local, except for things that can't be grown locally, like bananas. But at more than a buck a pound, you can do better elsewhere price-wise (I got some organic bananas at No Frills not too long ago at the same low price as regular bananas), especially since there's no moral imperative to buy imports--organic or not--via local middlemen.
