Review from Tony C.
Sacramento, CA
this place if off the charts good. I'm not italian, so I don't know how "authentic" it is, nor do I care. I do know that the owners SPEAK italian. And I'll leave it at that.
As far as taste goes - their sandwiches are hard to beat. And they have a wide selection of them. Salads/sides are also available, but prob around average taste.
Portions are large. 1 sandwich = 2 meals. The price is fair as well.
My 2 favorites are:
"The Fat Tony" & "The Greatest sandwich in the world" - I dont think I have had a better meatball sandwich. -
Review from Oggie O.
Diamond Bar, CA
Am I missing something? We had Denny devito and Sweet Child O'Swine. The bread was thick and the flavors were just ok.
Well...now if the sandwiches were $4, maybe I would think about eating it again if I had no other choice, but at $8.99 for a sandwich that is not even that good....forget it! I wouldn't mind paying the price if the sandwiches were good.
When the girl was making my meatballs, I saw her microwaving the meatballs for a few minutes before she put them on the bread to be baked in the oven. Why did she do that? I wonder if the meatballs were frozen ones. Could have gotten defrosted meatballs out of my freezer.
I highly recommend that you do not go here during your lunch time because we went there at around 3:30pm, and there's only one girl working. She's taking the orders, making the sandwiches and pizzas, and answering the phone at the same time. No wonder why we had to wait 35 minutes to get our 2 sandwiches with just one party that ordered 4 sandwiches in front of us. That was 5 minutes or more to make just one sandwich! The sandwiches are definitely not worth the wait.
Another thing is that when the girl was making the sandwiches, she had the gloves on, which was good, and then the phone rang, so she just picked up the phone with the gloves still on, and then after she got off the phone, she just continued making the sandwiches using the same gloves!
That was our first time and last time going there.
I was very disappointed in this place. -

I was really excited to purchase the Yelp deal since the bf and I are sandwich lovers, but was thoroughly disappointed. After reading all the reviews, we ordered what everyone was recommending (one of which was the Mark Sanchez and I think the other was the Fat Anthony).
Yeah they were decent & I liked their bread, but nothing spectacular and nothing that has made me want to go back necessarily. Maybe all the reviews hyped it up too much for me, but I think I'll stick to my many other favorite sandwich shops in Pasadena.
Note: Parking can be a pain too since it's so close to Old Town and there is no public lot, but that can also be a plus too because we conveniently went shopping after our lunch! -

Excellent sandwiches and service. My favorites are the Danny Leonetti and Heavy Hitter. I feel bad for the poor souls that opt for the bland, chain sandwich place 2 doors down instead of this make-your-mouth-water deliciousness.

I let the server order for me and I got "The Former World's Best Sandwich" which turned out to be one of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten. Several kinds of freshly sliced meats (including my favorite - sopressatta) in just the right amount to make a good sandwich and the excellent crusty roll put it over the top. Not cheap at $9.99 but well worth it.
All their salads were homemade and fresh. I had the Bean Salad and it was unique in having shredded broccoli in it - a nice contrast between soft beans and chewy broccoli. Next time I go, I'd like to try their couscous salad and another of their 2 dozen sandwiches.
Service was very friendly and helpful. No negative vibe when they saw the Groupon and I'll definitely be returning, happy to pay full price. Good food and service is worth paying for. -

The meatball sandwich is one of my favorites, and the imported (Italian) iced tea is excellent too.
The shop itself is set with mishmash of decor spanning 4 decades. You would never guess that the old couple that run this place are secretly a social media powerhouse.
The old guy was telling me that, on weekdays, there is a line out the door--that's how popular they are! I'm glad he read me in, I only drop in on Saturdays now. -

OK, so I returned here since my friend had a Hey That's Amore Groupon to use up and everyone knows me - I won't pass up a free meal.
This time, I noticed ALL the paper menus/flyers I initially noted have been updated... not with the new prices, but with the old prices blacked out with a black permanent marker. I guess that's better than just expecting your customers to know you raised the prices.
I ordered the Soprano (Chicken Parmesan,Garlic pepper pesto, lettuce/tomato) and Vinnie Barbarino (artichoke, Olive or Garlic pepper pesto, lettuce/tomato) to go.
This time, a young lady took my order instead and she was pleasant enough. I noticed they accepted the Groupon (that was pre-paid for two sandwiches under $7.99) and did not try to charge me extra despite there being tax, etc. I was happy about that.
I didn't eat my sandwiches until an hour later because I had errands and it was surprisingly better than the first time. I think it's because the pesto in both sandwiches give it a stronger flavor. Both were good.
I probably won't go out of my way to come here again because first impressions are hard to erase, but I won't argue if a friend wanted to dine here.
Also, don't PAY for parking! There's a free 90 minute lot (no validation needed) on Raymond across from the park that has a stairway that leads to the alleyway to Hey That's Amore and Holly Street businesses.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I love this place! Their sandwiches are amazing! I've had the "Michael Corleone," The Sicilian," and the "Holy Trinity," and they are all delicious! The ladies behind the counter are always super friendly and nice, and the orders are served pretty quickly.
The also have these beautiful salads in the display counter that look tasty but that I haven't tried (yet).
Give this place a try, and I'm sure you'll fall in love. :) -

I love introducing my boyfriend Matt J. who grew up in Pasadena to little awesome sandwich spots he never heard of before whenever we both go into town to visit his parents. Thanks yelp app for helping feed us with this place!
Definitely one of those mom and pop kind of places--you walk in and you feel like everyone should know your name, but really they have no idea who you are, but they still manage to make you feel that way nonetheless! They have a huge sandwich menu which for Matt J., since sandwiches are one of those foods he would eat everyday for the rest of his life if he had to, spent so so so so long trying to decide what he wanted. We finally got our order ready and the bread they used on each one was so tasty! All of the toppings tasted fresh, and you know it is made fresh when it takes a little while for them to put together 4 huge sandwiches. They didn't have any avocado which seems like a no no for a sandwich spot in CA, but all of the other delicious toppings and cheeses they have combined with all of the really unique names of sandwiches could definitely keep you entertained for days!
I now know where to go with Matt J. when he goes home to Pasadena for lunch :) -

San Gabriel, CA
The sandwiches here are really good - probably one of the best around the area. I got the yelp deal for here and decided to grab some sandwiches to go since I was in the area. I didn't really know what to get so I just told the worker that I want something with a lot of meat, which she recommended the heavy hitter and the former best sandwich in the world. They come with toasted bread, which might not be a good idea to get for people with sensitive mouths since my mouth hurt a little afterwards but maybe it was because I ate pretty quickly because I was really hungry. Unfortunately, that's where the star goes down to 4 because I felt it could have been bigger - for $10 each I kind of expected something bigger, but in the end I ended up being so hungry I ate the second one as well. For that reason I won't be coming back any time soon. Still I had a really good experience and would definitely give it a try again.

I love "The Sicilian" sandwich they have there. It has fresh mozzarella, basil, olive pest, garlic pesto, and tomatoes. It goes great with a side of their lentil salad.

Review from Johnny W.
My friend told me to purchase the groupon for this place so I did. We came here for lunch and had a hard time deciding on which sandwich to get since there were so many to choose from.
In the end we decided on "The Shavo Odadjian" which has pastrami, turkey, soppressantta, cheese, jalapeno, lettuce, tomato, onion and sriracha chili sauce.
This one was a bit spicy for me but it was great. I really like sriracha so it definitely was my favorite. The bread was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, toasted to perfection.
The second sandwich we ordered "The Vlade Divac" which has turkey, chicken, jalapeno, cheese, sanchez sauce, lettuce and tomato. They didn't have chicken so we got it with spicy salami. This was good as well, but I had to say I like the Shavo more.
The bread really made the sandwich taste good. The lady was really sweet and nice. Street parking can be tough but plenty of meter parking around as long as you don't mind walking half a block. -

But this place is Unique. The selection is great, so many options. I can wait to go back.
I want to try the Don Corleone next. -

Oh yeah, that's italian meat..
I try to go to a restaurant twice before I review. Nothing but amazing eats here. A delicious sandwich and an Italian espresso makes any bad day disappear. The best sandwich in the world is an order and it's true. A buddy and I ordered 2 different subs and mix n matched. Both great. Fresh ingredients, locally owned. The nice woman at front mumbles her way around but I find it real and quite endearing. Plus she makes a mean espresso that I cannot duplicate. Very casual, parking is meter or if possible a garage nearby for a low rate. Highly delicious sandwich! -

I came here with a friend to take advantage of the Groupon deal (basically a 2-for-1 deal). I got the Vlade Divac while my friend ended up getting the Fredo Corleone; since once was more than $7.99, we paid an extra $1.40 or so.
I was able to have a taste of both sandwiches and like them lots, especially mine. The bread is that type of harder bread but it goes well with their ingredients.
The decor and interior were great and the service was quick. The only annoying part was the parking; since it's in Old Town, you'll have to find a pay spot. Luckily, I found a meter with about 40 minutes left on it, and you can easily spend much less than that here.
I'd want to give it 3.5 stars. However, I don't like to round up, so that's why I gave it 3. -

Another groupon, another meal. This place really looks like an Italian deli. Anyways came in for lunch. It looked like the parking structure around the corner was closed but luckily I found metered street parking across the way with time still left on it. Score! All their items are printed and in individual frames all over their wall. I knew what I wanted beforehand because of yelp. The Mark Sanchez with its pastrami and red cabbage and deliciousness. My friend decided on the Vlade Divac, which had chicken and turkey and veggies. Both were huge and $9 with tax (probably because they're hot sandwiches). I was full after half and I saved the rest for a later meal so it's not too bad. I liked that my sandwich had a little bit of a tang. But it becomes overwhelming if you keep on eating it. A side salad or soda might've helped. I also tried some of my friend's sandwich. While it was good, it tasted like something I could get a regular sandwich shop (ie Subway). They give you a lot of meat though - a heaping full and all the veggies looked/tasted fresh. It's def filling. I imagine this is what real Italian sandwiches taste like and if I was in the neighborhood, I'd stop in again.

Hey That's Amore in Old Town Pasadena is a fantastic change from the franchised sandwich shops you find on every corner. The ambiance is that of a family owned shop which means it has some personality. I'm one of those guys that looks for a great sandwich everywhere I go and would rather go to a neighborhood establishment rather then a franchise that you can find anywhere in the world. There is a wide verity of sandwichs to choose from the tuna to the Italian type combos, each on fresh delicious rolls.
A testimony to how good this place is, is that it is next to a Subway and Hey That's Amore manages to stay busy. It's worth seeking out this neighborhood sandwich shop. -

Came here with a friend who purchased their Groupon deal, which is the same as the Yelp deal they have here. (pay $6 for $12 worth of food) We came right before they were closing on a Saturday and ordered a sandwich and two sodas. I wish I could remember the name of the sandwich...I think we shared "The Fat Anthony" ... I think. For some reason the only sandwich names I remember are "The Jersey Shore" and "The 50 Cent" because I started laughing when I read those on the wall. Their sandwich names crack me up haha.
The Fat Anthony was so delicious and really flavorful. The bread was really good too - y'know, that oh-it's-okay-to-have-carbs-today kind of bread. mmhm girrrrl, the only time I'll cheat my no-carb diet is for good bread. ahem*. I would most definitely come back to try more sandwiches. I also saw that they have pizza as well, so maybe I'll come back to try that.
The service is great - they're really friendly and I think it's family-owned, which I love. Even though they were already close to closing time, we were sitting on the patio finishing our (late) lunch and they told us not to rush. So sweet : ) The interior is really cool, there's a bunch of Italian decor and movie posters on the wall as well as a really long horizontal mirror that I checked myself out in a couple times. (haha I'M A GIRL. that's what we do when we pass by mirrors okay?! don't deny it, you do it too.) They have really tall tables and chairs too which is kinda neat. As a short little Asian girl, I like to feel tall every now and then. heh.
Street parking only, unless you wanna park in the lot next door which is $5 I think. Don't forget to pay the meter if you park on the street! Luckily, we parked at a meter with 30 minutes left on it. I cant wait to come back to try the rest of the menu!!Listed in: Favorites in my area!

Italian sandwiches + pastries makes for a happy Eunice. Came here for a quick lunch with my brother in Old Town Pasadena. A cute little cafe right on Holly Street... probably have driven by it 100x w/o ever noticing it. Maybe because its located next door to a HUGE subway! Makes you wonder, how do they stay in business? Answer: Great Sandwiches!
Me and my brother both ordered the same Turkey Sandwich ($5.99) and made it a "meal deal" for (+$1.99) which came with drinks and a side. Side choices included fruit and various macaroni salads. Doesn't sound very special, but the sandwich was DELICIOUS. The bread MADE the sandwich. It was crunchy on the outside and soft in the inside - yes cut the roof of your mouth crunchy. LOVE IT! The turkey wasn't freshly cut.. (processed meat) and the ingredients weren't all that special.. but it just tasted great. A hearty sandwich.. made with some GREAT bread LOL.
Other people simply came in for the desserts + Italian coffee. But I would say the majority came in to enjoy a sandwich :) What a great find in Old Town! BUT like most business in Pasadena... the meter parking.. was horrendous :( -

Amore. Yes, this is about you.
This little Italian sandwich spot was the last place that I expected to find a raw food lunch. What in the hell am I doing looking for raw food lunches? Skip to the bottom of the page to avoid another story.
When I was little, I learned how to play my guitar in the sandbox near my church. You were just visiting '"the other side of the tracks". Took .00001 seconds before I knew. I went home and wrote my first song. A sad one. Just like this, it was all about you. It was winter
Easter Sunday. I hid a dozen plastic eggs for you to find. In each one I hid the next line. The first, of MANY. Silly love letters.
Summer solstice. You taught me how to kiss. You said, "Do you want to ask me? Go like this... Just close your eyes." I did. And that was the end of me.
Years together, years apart. We laughed, we screamed. We broke our hearts. The good deeds of my life? Are not altruistic.
No. I submit the selfish truth. Another part of me that's all about you. Do you? Believe in heaven?
If there is one, I doubt that I can buy my way in. Doubt all the apologies in the world will make up for my sins. They say the streets are paved with gold, but not in my heaven.
The radio is playing our song. There are no swords to draw. Every hurt of yours, of mine is gone and long forgotten. Me and you. Sandcastles built for two. In the sandbox. My heaven.
17 years later, I still hate you. How dare you be so good to me and unavailable? Saving me with your encouragement. BTW, the gardenias were beautiful.
Damn it, you look just the same. Wait, have you been losing weight? You didn't have anything to lose, for God sakes, eat a freakin sandwich!
Where did you get all these new tattoos? What kind of prison guard has been feeding you? You are way too skinny. So I lean in desperate to learn your secret.
WTF.?! Really?! Vegan?! Raw food?! Of all the hippie crap in the world. YOU?! Are the one who taught me how to eat a steak! Damn it!
Vegan, raw foods. Is that what it is?! You look great, but you always did. A-hole, two of us can play that game. So I'm at the counter picking up a salad at Hey That's Amore.
Metered parking. Metro stop nearby. The coolest selection of quirky root beers ever introduced to my eyes. One made me laugh out loud. Root beer entitled: "DANG!"
This is a great place to drag my sandwich -loving friends. I bought my first Yelp coupon for future use! $20 for $10 = awesome. You and me? Agree on one thing. Coupon = sexy. We can't agree on much. Celebrate life's little triumphs.
Coffee, tea and espresso. Cozy tables and a nice view from the windows. Service: 5 stars. Ambiance: 4 stars. Bargain: 4 stars. Flavor factor? 2 stars. BUT! I don't think mine was supposed to taste good.
Raw food vegans, mealtime is a punishment. The payoff MIGHT be an outcome worth the misery. But hey! Think of all the animals that won't be dyin?
Combine any three salads for $7.99. Raw cabbage, peas and corn in lemon juice and pepper. Raw cauliflower and cucumber with dill. Raw broccoli, beets, mushrooms and cranberries; my order.
The girl behind the counter was helpful and nice. Asks me how I'm doing about ten times. This lunch was a great deal. Gluten-free friendly, vegetarian, and more than enough food for me to eat twice. If only it tasted good. *sigh* Vegans, you have my utmost sympathy.
My dearest, oldest friend. Vegan? Raw food? Yuck. Prison sentence. I know that it won't last, but I'm gonna try. Another way you've infiltrated and influenced my life. Best regards to your wife. I'll be seeing you. For all time. IF.
I get into heaven.:-)Listed in: Gluten free advice from a…, Pure Pasadena, Veggie friendly LA, Poetry

Why anyone would eat at the Subway when this place is next door has got me perplexed.
They have the best Italian sandwiches, spectacular pizza and fresh/awesome salads. Don't forget the huge variety of diverse soda in glass bottles. You gotta try this family owned gem. -

Los Angeles, CA
I like the place, which is a real mom and pop (or rather mamma and pappa) place. Clean, well lit, lots of tables and lots of choices. Having never eaten here before, I gave two sandwiches a shot--the Danny Devito and some other one with pastrami, roast beef and cabbage.
The Devito had soft, crunchy bread, but really could have used some tomato sauce. Mayo/mustard and meatballs just doesn't go with it. The peppers were a nice touch, but there were very few of 'em and they were pickled (fresh serranos would have turned this into a guido bahn mi, mmm).
The other sandwich was drowning in thousand island, which tasted more like briny mustard. Couldn't taste any of the meat.
I'm maintaining 4 stars here because I think this is the kind of place where 50% of the sandwiches just won't hit a personal mark, but I'm confident I'll find a perfect match here if I keep trying. -

Came here to pick up some sandwiches with my Yelp deal. They're kind of hidden along Holly, two doors down from a Subway.
They have this wall of sandwiches named after mostly Italian characters, actors, athletes, and singers (okay, in 50 Cents' case, rappers). I got the Taxi Driver which came with a spicy Italian sausage wrapped in some sort of salami (I forget the name of it). It had a nice spiciness to it although if you don't like sandwiches that are a little on the salty side, get something else. There are lots of sandwiches to choose from.
Also got the one with 3 meats but I forgot what it was called. It had pastrami, turkey, and ham I think. It was very good. Their sandwiches are a few dollars more than a 6" Subway but it's totally worth it as they don't skimp on the meats.
Definitely coming back next time I'm in Old Pas for lunch. -

I don't remember the names of the two sandwiches I've tried since my sister got them, but I can say they were good and very filling. Just eating half of one was good enough for my stomach. I had to save the other half for the next day and it was still good.
Note: it's does get salty after awhile but I think that's because of the italian meats. -

La Crescenta-Montrose, CA
I'm not so sure about this place. The sandwiches are odd. I ordered the meatball and sausage sandwich. The meatballs were tasty but the sausage was Polish sausage. It was a strange flavor combination. The pricing is iffy too. You never really know the price because the menus have a different price than the wall. Also, they have a sandwich special every day, but the price is the same as posted on the wall. So what makes it a special? Just because they wrote it on a chalkboard?

Was in the area scouting and hungry - so stopped by this place. Never heard of it (not being from the area) and didn't read the reviews ...

On my first visit here I was impressed!
Great crisp but soft bread, structured in a manner where ingredients stayed put. The no-mess eating kind of blew me away!
It's been a few weeks since I ate here so I forgot what I ordered already. I got subs for both me and The Hubbs and we were equally satisfied.
Would definitely come here again.
P.S. Hey, They're Armenian!!--not that it matters but it's just funny that amidst all the Italian movie posters/pictures you'll find a signed picture of System of the Down, which confirmed my suspicions when I placed my order. Nice ladies btw...they didn't mind that I totally customized my sammich.Listed in: Pasadena Eats

I had the Taxi Driver the other day with a yelp deal. It was definitely worth the trip. I had a cappuccino and thought it was very good. The only reason I gave it 4/5 is because the sausage was not an italian sausage, or at least the kind I expected. I thought it tasted more like a kielbasa. I'm no sausage expert but It was unexpected and seemed sort of out of the ordinary. I'll have to ask what kind it was next time. Anyways, the sandwich was still amazing and I'll definitely be back to try another one of the long list.

Lets start by saying I am a carnivore... and i love my meat. So when a place can make me fall in love with a vegetarian sandwich!! - you know they are good. I cannot stop eating the Vinnie Barbarino (lettuce, fresh tomato, sundried tomato, artichoke hearts, olive paste and provolone). They have the cutest names for their sandwiches - like the Heavy HItter, the Vlade Diva, Mark Sanchez & Danny Devito.
The staff is always really friendly and sweet... like an italian grandmother should be (not that i have an italian grandmother). Family owned business have a special place in my heart.
Please patronize small businesses like this one... (especially there is a Subway next door) -

This place has been here for quite a while but I never knew because I rarely walk up past Colorado Boulevard. What a shame because I've been missing out all these years!
The Fat Anthony: Turkey, Soppressata, Garlic Pepper Pesto, Jalapenos, Lettuce and Tomatoes: Delicious! The bread is really fresh. It's crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The sandwich is packed with goodies but is not overstuffed where everything just falls out with each bite. It's really well made! The ingredients are fresh and tasty. I really enjoyed the garlic pepper pesto and the jalapenos in my sandwich. The sandwich had a nice blend of flavors & textures. I would definitely have this again.
The "Former" Greatest Sandwich in the World: Salami, Prosciutto, Soppressata, Lettuce, Sun Dried Tomatoes and Onions: I usually pick out most of the onions in a sandwich but it was tasty and not overpowering so I didn't. Unfortunately, I didn't really enjoy this one as much. I think my taste buds were still stuck on The Fat Anthony. My taste buds went kinda numb after The Fat Anthony. However, if I ate this one first, it would definitely have a positive review.
The Tom Hagen: I didn't taste this one but dad said it was good.
Next up on the list: The Sicilian or The Shavo Odadjian -

LOVE this place!
The sandwiches are bomb dot com and the names of their sandwiches are pretty hilarious (e.g. the Vlade Divac). The hot sandwiches are baked and full of warm, cheesy goodness. I've had the Danny Devito, the Greatest Sandwich in the World, and the Fat Anthony. They all made me want to go take a nap in the sun at Memorial Park instead of going back to work. And that's a good thing. Definitely comfort food for your soul.
They used to give a $2 discount on any sub with a Yelp! check-in. Not sure if they're still honoring that, but that's what got me to try them out in the first place. The manager was super nice my first time there. He gave me a few suggestions on what to get, and gave me a free espresso. I'm a sucker for free or discounted food. -

So I had the Former Greatest Sandwich ever which was very tasty although I thought it could use a bit more mustard (I got it sans mayo so it was a little drier than usual probably). I'm definitely eager to go back and try some of their other sandwiches.
It is a bit pricey, but I'd rather pay $10 for a tasty, well-made sandwich here than $5 for a lackluster sandwich at subway.
