Heron Rock Bistro completely surprised me. Where are all the reviews?

The space is a little dark but very spacious with fresh flowers on the table. The menu is filled with many eggs benny options and is a perfect place for a group brunch. We went with a large group and everyone enjoyed their meals in particular, the eggs benny, and veggie sandwich get special high fives for tastiness!

The staff was extremely friendly and our water was refilled often. We had a baby in our group who was too small to sit in a high chair so our server offered to set up a chair with pillows for mom and babe! Now that is truly going the extra mile to ensure your customers are comfortable!

Its Tucked away in James Bay by the thrifty foods and really worth visiting. Prices are quite reasonable.

Tried the salad and poutine with four people and found it to be pretty disappointing.  Salad with apple and seeds only has a touch of apple and perhaps a sunflower seed somewhere in it.  This makes is rather lacking in substance and anemic.  The poutine made me sick so i had to run to the nearest restroom afterwards.  There are good restaurants in Victoria but this is not one of them.

I drop in to the bistro about once a month because I am comfortable eating alone there, I always find something I enjoy eating and the service is good.  The menu for a vegetarian is somewhat limited but I do enjoy their breakfasts and lunches and like that they have local live music in the evenings.  Friendly staff, good atmosphere.

I took my boyfriend to the Heron Rock Bistro for a special occasion (anniversary) dinner. We had a bottle of wine, appetizers, entrees, dessert, coffee. The food tasted great, and the service was fairly good, and we enjoyed ourselves.

Six hours later I became violently, horribly, terribly ill, first from one end, then the other. To the point that I had to do laundry. I was sick all that night, and all the next day, and still queasy the next. The bottle of wine, which we hadn't finished, ended up going into spaghetti sauce because I'd been too sick to finish it.

I called the Heron Rock to tell them what had happened, and the conversation went like this:

    Him: *answers phone, restaurant name*
Me: *"Hi, we were in the other night... *relays story*"
Him: "Huh. What did you have?"
Me: "*lists dishes, pointing out that the only thing we didn't share was the chicken I had - my boyfriend didn't touch it. He was fine, I got horribly ill."
Him "Ok, I'll ask around to see if anyone else got sick, and we'll call you back for more info."

    Nobody ever called me back.

We don't go out for higher-end dinners that often, and it was a big treat, and the bill was $120.00 for the two of us.

So, so disappointed and unimpressed. The sickness was unfortunate but can happen - but to not have the courtesy, interest or customer appreciation to even return my call, follow up, or express dismay? Unacceptable.

This restaurant is literally a hole in the wall that not everyone knows about because its a smaller restaurant hidden away in James Bay.
After reading the last 2 reviews I was quite surprised because I have had nothing but good meals here (both lunch and dinner).

Me and my family consider this restaurant a good contender to go to if you want something similar but cheaper then a restaurant like Brasserie L'ecole.

At lunch time I usually order their Veggie Burger, which is a home made patty and is enormous and so delicious. And I usually get it with their home made iced tea (it has a bit of a berry taste to it) its worth a try!

For dinner I either usually order their Special, in one case I had a Chicken dish that came with braised greens and chanterelle mushrooms which was quite good. Or one of their menu regulars which is the Mussels and Frites.

The fries here are extremely good and a must try, they are thin cut fries that come with parmesan cheese and basil on top, served with a garlic aioli sauce.
