We go to the Hennessey every once in a while on Sundays for the Sunday Service improv performance. It's almost always a riot, and it's just $5 for the performers and a $5 purchase requirement from the bar.
The menu is pretty standard pub food, but they do have some vegan options, which is nice. Some decent beers on tap. Their house red wine tastes underaged but it's not offensively overpriced. It's - the word is "jammy".
Last time we were there, we had the most amazing server - she had great taste in music and was friendly and cute - and then she gave us her card and it turned out she was the manager! It really made me want to go back. Good job, Angel! -

My vision of this place is pretty skewed as I've only been here on dates. And the most recent one went, I thought, pretty well. All in all it's actually just a pretty standard pub. They have live music sometimes which is pretty cool, if a bit loud. They have decent beer and you pay about what you'd expect. I like the decor, I like the atmosphere, but at the end of the day there's not that much setting it apart from all the other bars around town.

I think this place is now calling itself the Kozmik Zoo. The manager wears too much cologne, isn't interested in customers that aren't in his demographic, and hits on girls that are much too young for him in front of the clientele. And the food is meh/blah. The only thing that earns it a star would be the occasional comedy night, but I doubt even that would make me go back.

Food was pretty pathetic. Nearly naked nachos before burlesque class. We ordered an array of appetizers, they were suprisingly small, unsatisfying and it just seemed like there wasn't enough of anything (dipping sauce, food).

Came over with a buddy after hearing a lot about the place. Parking is decent in the surrounding area, and if you're lucky, you'll get a spot without a meter.
The interior is painted black like most trendy places. They had a DJ with 2 turntables and a Macbook. Unlike most places, the music was just loud enough to be easily heard, but not so loud that the tables shake and your ears bleed. This alone is worth a mention. They were playing mostly house.
On Fridays they have $4.95 pints of Rickard's (cream ale, pale ale, lager).
The Henessey burger (about $13) was one of the better burgers out there. Plenty of toppings, with a decent portion of fries. Of course, the price also reflects this. But I was satisfied.
The service was decent, with very courteous staff. No complaints there.
So why only 3 stars? For some reason the interior felt a bit beaten up. Maybe it's time for a reno. -

Dine Drink Lounge...... Laugh?
The Hennessey definitely has the first three in its back pocket. From the icon driven signage to the dark lounge feel this place has always had me sold. So when we were extended an invite to "The Sunday Service" hosted by Hennessey there was little doubt that we'd give it a try.
The comedy group is hosted every Sunday at 9PM ($5 Cash per person). Never really having been exposed to live comedy I wasn't sure what to expect; but there was always the drinks I told myself.
We were told to arrive early as it gets really packed. Arrived at 8 and at three drinks in at the stroke of 9 it all started. Get here early; the place really did pack up quick. The show had great audience participation, a good mix of skits and a great range of members.
I left even more enamoured than I had been before so when the chance came to return this last sunday I jumped at it.
If you're in the mood for drinks and a little entertainment give this place a try. Theres not many ways you can spend $5 in our city and get a great night; this is definitely one of them. -

Hennessey is hard to notice at first; it's situated along a strip of Broadway that has a cluster of sports shops, and the exterior of the restaurant is all black. It's definitely a night spot, because if it weren't for the bright red lights announcing its name to the street in the dark, you wouldn't be able to see this place at all.
Don't underestimate it's simple exterior though -- this place is booming inside! Inside, the restaurant is sexy and sleek, with dark walls, dim lights, and racy red accents for the decor. I came here for a Christmas work party once, and was immediately impressed by the place. It's high urban class with a whole lotta sex appeal.
They have low square tables for small, intimate groups and also booth seats for larger parties. There's a small stage area for the live dj's or bands that play here occasionally, particularly on the weekends.
They had a buffet lined up for us that night, and while everything was good, the thing I remember most was the ratatouille. Very moist and tender, and the sauce was delicious. They also had a separate dessert table set up for us, and the goodies nearly disappeared before the servers had a chance to set them down on the table!
I would definitely come back to Hennessey for dinner, if I wanted to take a friend out somewhere impressive. It's great for a corporate party or a romantic evening out too! -

The Sunday night improv comedy skits are what I like best about this place. I rate that four and a half stars. The food and drinks, sadly, are at best: mediocre. Neither incredible, nor terrible. Somewhere in between. So for that, the place gets three stars.
The music is WAY too loud for a lounge/bar. I had to yell at the people across the table from me the whole time and they could still barely hear me. I find that obnoxious. -

I came here a few months ago for my birthday. I had 2 other girlfriends who were celebrating their birthdays with me too. I had problems trying to find a place that would take our group because it was so large. A lot of places were charging us ridiculous amounts for deposits and outside food charges for the cake we wanted to bring in for our birthdays. For example Circa was trying to charge us $50+ just so that we could bring in ONE cake and more service charges for cutting it up and serving it to us. WTF?
Hennessey had a nice atmosphere which went well with their friendly servers. Yes it is a little dark inside but I think it's romantic. This place is definitely a little hard to find at first and if you're not paying attention while you're driving it's easy to miss especially with all the random stores surrounding it. There is plenty of street parking but it's only pay parking at the front. If you want free parking just park on the side streets or one block in on 9th or 8th ave. I'm not sure about free parking south of Broadway because I usually just park on the northside of Broadway.
Their food isn't the greatest but I would definitely go for their pizzas any day! ummmm The owner or manager that night was Mersad. He is such an awesome person because he was so fun and friendly and we even had a few drinks together free on the house because it was our birthdays.
We must of had 30+ people at our party and I had only reserve for about 20 and they some how accommodated all of us which was another bonus. UFC was on that night and they have a rule where you're not allowed to reserve tables on event nights but they made an exception for me and my party. They are very accommodating. Because of their friendly service and how they would almost bend over backwards for you made my night enjoyable.
Some of my friends said the food is horrible but it depends on what you order because I actually liked everything I ate. Their garlic and chicken pizza is THE BEST! It's on a thin crust so it's not too heavy and I had some pasta too and salad and.....i can't remember what else because at that point I think I was already on my 5th drink.
The pricing is about average for a nice lounge and yes once again this was a nice experience. They're very helpful and accommodating(I must of said that a million times already). If you ever plan to have a party at a lounge I'd suggest you try out hennessey at least once. And if you are torn between this place and Circa then....GO HERE! Circa is good because their venue is very big and pretty looking but they will suck you dry of all your money and send you home hungry and unhappy. -

From the outside, it doesnt look like much..
but once inside, you will see this is actually quite a 'happening' little joint!
was here last night for a friends bday bash...we had half the place reserved for us...the decor was great, lotsa scarey things up for halloween, all the waistresses were in costume which was so cute! there's a small dj booth at the entrance and they play live mixes from 9..or 10 or maybe 11pm? (i forgot to check the time) there was a GREAT DJ last night...wicked mixes...i especially like the reggae stuff he played.
at the other end is a little stage with some couches which you can use as a dance floor.
i had the southwestern burger with yam fries paired with a glass of russells cream beer.
the burger was pretty simple, loved the guac and deep fried onions! (i normally never have onions in my burger) and the yam fries were great with the aioli mayo.
ive been here once before and had a bunch of the appi's (coconut shrimp was one..cant remember the rest, but the shrimp was delish!)
food isn't stellar but decent enough.
service is somewhat lacking and the waitresses weren't the brightest stars in the sky, but they were all sweet and pleasant enough.
loved the atmosphere and decor of the place.
loved that its a great meeting and chilling place for a big or small group.
great drinks.
very chill...i like that. its too bad that it isn't busier.
LOVED the DJ and live music!!!! i give him 5 stars! -

The Hennessey is definitely a place that gives new meaning to ye olde saying, "never judge a book by it's cover" because from the outside, it looks like it'd been burned down and is under renovations. In other words, do not enter because sketchy things will happen if you do. Thankfully, sketchy things didn't happen and it was like discovering Narnia! Okay, the place isn't beautiful and full of talking animals but it's surprisingly nice. Full of big screen TVs and comfyish seats, what more can you ask for? The drinks aren't dirt cheap (I'm talking "I can pay in quarters" cheap) but what is these days?! I think I got a beer for $5.
Came here on a Sunday night for Improv. $5 for Improv?!?! Makes this girl super happy. In a city full of over-priced things it's nice to come across something the non-money-bags can afford and enjoy. The improvisers were good too! I believe they got more and more better as the night wore on either because they were warmed up or because they were getting progressively more and more drunk. Evenstill, we got an awesome show. And the improv sketches are epic long. If you stay for the whole thing, expect to sit for 2+ hours with an intermission.
Didn't try any of the food but I imagine it to be decent. The staff were attentive constantly running around.
All of this being said, I don't know how it is on a non-Sunday night. -

Great place to watch the Canucks beat the Kings 7-2!!!
If you want to grab some beers and a bite to eat and take in a game, this is the place for you. Great friendly service. Good food. Any drink you desire.
After the game, stay for some good hip-hop too. -

I went here on a Wednesday night because my friend didn't have ID for another event.
I was aware of this stand-up comedy night but have never been. The loungey environment was perfect for stand-up, and improv comedy on Sunday night for the same price, $5.00.
There was an over flow of comedians, usually the show lasts 90 minutes, but 3 more comedians came up to the plate to play. A number of professional comedians performed at the show, some traveling from as far as Montreal.
I've been to maybe thirty or forty stand-up comedy shows in my time in Vancouver and I must say, in terms of talent for a small independent production (not Yuk Yuks/Comedy Mix), this was the best show ever!
I wish I could re-post all their names, but you know you remember the jokes...but not who they are.
If this is this good every Wednesday night, this is a must go! -

This place went from dead to packed in a hot minute. Came on a Wednesday night and they were having a comedy event (seems like they are always doing something) . Good pasta (2 for 1), great frangelico martini, and wayy too many comedians! I'll definitely come back, this place rocks!

I headed over to Hennessey to watch UFC fight 124 on PPV with my Fiance and his brother. We live nearby and I had seen the place from the outside many times, but I thought it looked like a fancy restaurant to be honest. I was surprised when I found it on a list online of places that show UFC. We called the restaurant before we went because I knew it would be super packed and the staff were very friendly on the phone and told us they would save 3 bar stools for us. Awesome! we arrived and were happy to see we had a big tv right in front of us, and when they handed us the menus we were thrilled to see how cheap everything was!! we ordered a couple plates of nachos ($10) and a pizza to share and we loved the food. The guys had a couple beers and I was happy to sip on a pop while they offered me free refills. The staff really went out of their way to give us good service especially considering how busy the place was! We will definitely be going back to catch other PPV events.
