I didn't even know this place existed for a long time, and early last year, I was idly flipping through The Tomato (http://thetomato.ca/) and saw an ad. It mentioned some of the famous cooking brands they carried (Haenkels, for instance), and also that they were open to the public.
Hmmmm...I thought...I gotta check this place out! Turns out we had driven by it tons of times and just never noticed it, in its nondescript building on 118th Ave. Inside is foodie paradise. Anything you could possibly want or need for opening your own restaurant, or just adding to your home cooking collection of gadgets and toys. The front has everything from colanders, mandolines, garlic presses, and citrus reamers to the latest in chef-wear. The back has high-end commercial ranges and other appliances and fixtures.
I wandered around for what seemed like ever. They politely asked if I needed any help, and I said where I'd heard of them and wanted to look around, that I'd certainly be buying something! they left me to my browsing, which I liked-- being available for questions but not overbearing.
I finally settled for a dumpling making set (3 sizes in one box- never can tell when you might have to whip out some emergency pierogies!), a cool kitchen knife with colored plastic insert (mine's red, signifying meat. There are other colors for veg, fish, etc), and a fine strainer, which I'd really been needing. I think the total came to around fifty bucks. Not bad!
If you're looking for a specific foodie tool, and you've searched at Bosch or Homesense or the old stalwarts, give this a place a try. I can guarantee you'll find it here.
