Paris
I've been to Helmut Newcake three times in the past month -- as a person intolerant of gluten and dairy both, I am very happy the doors to this gluten-free pâtisserie are open!
While all of the pastries at Helmut Newcake are gluten-free, they also all contain some form of dairy, whether butter, milk, or cream. Thankfully, I can tolerate a little butter now and then, so I have been able to sample three different goodies made with butter but no other dairy products. Be aware, however, that if you are like me and cannot tolerate diary in addition to gluten, Helmut Newcake will not be able to accommodate you with pastries at the present time. I heard that the chef has been experimenting with various rice milks and so on to create some dairy-free creams for various pastries, but they are still experimental and not a part of the daily offerings, yet. Still, we who stay gluten-free are thankful enough that progress in even having pastries with no gluten that are FINALLY available in Paris! Here's to hoping more will follow the example of Helmut Newcake.
So far, I have had the pistachio and currant tart, a chocolate fondant, the Prince cake, and a canelé. The tart was very fresh, the crust nutty and pleasant, and the jam-like currant topping a wonderful tart companion. The chocolate fondant reminded me of the lovely "lava cakes" I had eaten back in the days when I ate like a "normal person." The center was very creamy and chocolatey and gave me a chocolate fix for the day. The Prince cake is a moist "coffee cake" with an orange-flavored glaze topping. It went very well with the chamomile tea I chose to have with it. And finally, I bought a canelé and took it home with me to eat later. Canelés have milk in them to create the creamy, custard center, but it was honestly worth having a reaction! It was so full of caramel goodness. I intended to eat only half and save half for later: I could not resist eating the entire thing in one sitting. Delicious!
Hot drinks are between 1.50 € and 3 €; cold drinks are available as well. The pastries range in price from 1.50 € to 4 €.
The atmosphere is very laid-back and pleasant, and the owners, Marie and François, are two of the nicest shop owners I have ever met. Marie herself is gluten-intolerant, and both Marie and François are keenly aware of the needs of people who need to modify their diet in this way. They are quick to share the ingredients of the items to advise their customers (many who are intolerant of gluten often have problems with various other ingredients, too), and are very attentive of those who come in to try their pastries.
I have taken people here who are not gluten-intolerant and eat regular pastries, and they praised the pastries as good if not better than their gluten-full counterparts! I have heard that the cheesecake is especially good.
I have made some purchases from the goods at Helmut Newcake as well. The pumpkin ginger rice noodles I bought went really well with a curry I had made, and the Rooibos tea from Clipper Teas is fantastic! I hope to try some of the cereals and other items that are for sale as well. The various products Marie and François carry are a refreshing change from the standard gluten-free items available at Paris's health food stores.
I hope to try some of their daily lunch offerings soon as well. I know I will be going back to Helmut Newcake very soon! Maybe I'll see you there! -

Paris
I had to go gluten free as of January 1st, and I had heard about this bakery. So, I didn't wait and a friend and I got various desserts. Our favorites were the fruit filled, and although the creamed filled desserts were good, it was a bit too sweet for my liking.
They also sold other things like gluten free cereal, flour etc. I bought some flour and made pancakes with them, they came out great. I'm hoping one day there'll be gluten free baguette. Thus far the gluten free found at "bio" stores are pretty awful.
Going back tomorrow to get some more desserts to take home! -

Who in the world would have ever dreamed that gluten-free cakes could taste better than their regular counterparts?! Certainly not I. But after tasting the gluten-free caneles and coffee eclairs at this brand new café near the Canal St Martin I am hooked, hooked, hooked!
Waiting for me as we speak is a slice of gluten-free cheesecake that I'm planning on picking up on my way home for my sweet tooth husband. I'm going to pretend like there's nothing out of the ordinary and test his reaction. By the looks of it and the owner's promise that it was the best cheescake in Paris, I'm quite certain it will blow his mind.
While this clean, loft-life café stills needs a bit of time to liven up (it was super quiet while I was there) it will no doubt become a major destination for sweet lovers of all dietary walks of life.
