If you can hear the wind screaming in your ears, if you love the rhythm of your pulse, the rhythm of your cadence and the rhythm of your breath, then this is your bike shop for getting your set up dialled in.
If you don't know what I mean by my opening statement, then this isn't your shop.
Skinny tires, carbon, titanium, Lycra and sweat is what you should expect to find here. With a few other goodies.
Paul is the man for helping you tweak your bike-fit.
Inventory is small, the shop is airy and bright with more than enough bodies to be doing the work. -

I recently moved in just around the corner from Hello Velo and everything about it sounded perfect: they carry Felts (which I ride), do specialized bike fittings, full service, and have what appeared to be a well run cycling group.
For all intents and purposes, it still "appears" to be a good place in offering all those services. My issue with HV is that each time I have gone in to get a tire changed, look for a new sadle, get a chain replaced, or get a regular bike service, they've been booked up for 10-14 days. For anyone who rides regularly, the wait time is far too long.
Calling in advance is highly advised but unfortunately they lag behind on picking up the phone, returning messages, and answering emails. Essentially you have to go there in person if you want an answer and, again, to find out that you're going to have to wait a while for whatever it is you needed. The people who work there are friendly, helpful, and patient but I wouldn't recommend them to anyone who doesn't want to wait around for slow service.
Wheels of Bloor has always been very prompt with servicing clients and yet they, too, manage to be thorough and do a great job. I've never felt rushed there and have always walked away 100% happy.
It's disappointing and I'd like to try HV again someday but perhaps hiring more staff to reduce wait times would be something they'd look into. -

Over the last few months I've heard a lot of good things about Helo Velo and finally got a chance to check them out myself.
The shop is located on Carlaw just north of Queen. The front door is a little hidden down an alley but if you look for the big red sandwich board sign you should be ok. Walk down the alley into the court yard and the front door will be on your left.
The shop isn't fancy but it is TOTALLY about bikes. If you are a road or cross rider, HV is the place for you. The staff is super friendly and very knowledgeable. They take the time to talk and really know their stuff. They specialize in higher end bikes and for 2009 they are focused on Jamis.
If you need service they handle the full deal. They also rent out bench space if you need a place to do your own repairs or builds. From time to time they also offer specialized classes dealing with bike repair and maintenance.
Interested in proper bike fittings... they've got you covered there too.
Beyond sales and service HV also offers regular club rides for all levels as well as being a sponsor for the Dark Horse race team.
I gotta say, I like this place a lot and plan on being a regular customer.
UPDATE - was having some minor issues with the fit of my bike and my sore old man knees. Spend almost 2 hours with Paul doing a bike fit session and BOY-O-BOY was I impressed. Great experience getting my setup dialed in. Well worth the investment.Listed in: Leslieville FTW!, My Leslieville Favs, Bikes and Bike Shops I like in…
