Ok... so I love the Classic Vegan Pizza.  I think I've made that clear enough that earlier this week, I sat down for supper and the server simply came to my table and told me they were already preparing my pizza.  Ahh.... the life of a regular...

But allow me to elaborate a little more on The Heartwood's other menu items.  Yes, they actually do make more than just awesome pizza.  It's true.  I've cheated on my true love and actually had affairs with some of the other menu items.  I'm sorry honey but I just couldn't help myself.

The Organic Cajun Tofu is simply delicious, filling and yes, spicy.  I can't recommend it enough.

Their bean burrito?  Another filling dish guaranteed to keep you satisfied.

Guacamole and Hummous platter is a bit tamer flavour-wise than the other three dishes but still just as satisfying.

If you go for the brunch, you can try the Organic Spelt-Kamut Waffles which I wouldn't recommend to someone who wasn't already famished.  Trust me; this one will fill you up and of course, it's awesome!

If you're not already famished, definitely try the Portobello Mushroom Burger.  As portobello mushroom burgers go, this one's the best I've had anywhere.

Dessert?  Coco-banana pie all the way baby!  Yes, they make vegan cheescakes and such and honestly, they are good but I have to say I've had better.

My first foray into Hearwood was a Yelp Event (hello Peanut Butter Cheesecake) and as a non-vegan I was cautiously optimistic.

I will say that on all 3 occasions I have ordered the exact same thing but they have been different every time.  I go for brunch and get the wild card salad.  Salad you say?  Yup, salad as it is soo much more than that.  I think of it as the chefs creation...  tofu scramble (with curry), soup of the day, spelt waffle, and well... salad.

The coffee is fair trade and tasty.  The wild card is a generous portion (i never finish it) and prices are very reasonable.

Service can be uneven, some staff are friendly and some look at me like I am a carnivore in disguise!!!!  All in all, a lovely place to share with friends.

I am not vegan or vegetarian but very much support and believe it is a wonderful thing for those with the will power to say no to pork bellies, will power has just never been my strength.  But I think we could all do a service to the world and to ourselves by eating vegan or vegetarian even occasionally.  So I think it is great that there is a restaurant out there which is completely vegetarian and with a lot of vegan options.

I was not really sure what to order when I got there, as several things looked good.  I ended up opting for the Spicy Tofu Pizza which had tomato sauce, marinated tofu, chili peppers, tomatoes, peppers, and cheddar cheese.  The pizza was tasty, although the pizza crust was a little too heavy for my liking.  I prefer a really thin crispy crust.  The toppings were very tasty however and I enjoy the spicy tofu even though I have never been a big tofu fan.  Would probably not order the pizza again but just do to my personal preference on crusts, not as a reflection of the quality of their pizza.

Heartwood will probably not be a place I frequent on my own, but certainly a place I would happily return to when dining with a vegan or vegetarian who are looking for more options then what are generally available at most restaurants.

Although this is a vegetarian restaurant, meat eaters will be just as delighted with meals and desserts this place has. If I am craving something sweet I head over to Heartwood to indulge in one of their delicious vegan "cheesecake" creations. Although a bit pricey, you know you are doing your body good....

Wonderful place, wonderful food.  Small and cozy, food is consistently fresh and unexpected.

I recommend the tomato and avocado sandwich which sounds simple but is actually complicated and fresh.  I have also had the changing raw vegan option and found the flavors a bit inconsistent but individually excellent.

Having only visited the Heartwood once (OK, minus one time where I went, was overwhelmed by several crying babies and left) I feel a little premature in writing this review, but I have to tell y'all about two things.

    1. Waffles
I went for brunch with some other Yelpers on a recent Saturday morning and ordered them. A. Maz. Ing.

    2. Peanut Butter Cheesecake
It's made from tofu so it's OK to eat two slices, right? RIGHT??? Seriously guys, this stuff is delicious. It's the crack of health food. (Tofu = health food, shut up.)

I haven't stopped thinking about my brunch since I left here yesterday. I came with a group of yelpers and we all had intended on getting peanut bowls and peanut butter cheesecake but because it was a Saturday they were serving brunch and the pb bowl was not on the menu. I was slightly disappointed but my disappointment did not last long.

I'm a pancakes/waffle/french toast kinda girl when it comes to breakfast, so as soon as I saw waffles on the menu I knew what my back-up option was. They were kamut/spelt waffles, and let's be honest, I fully enjoy healthy food, but when it comes to bread I have no shame in saying I prefer white over whole wheat. However, these waffles - completely awesome, thick and fluffy without being heavy the way normal healthier bread products are. The waffles were smothered with a sweet (but not too sweet) blueberry sauce with some pear and strawberry slices mixed in with the blueberry sauce.

Now for dessert - the vegan Peanut Butter Cheesecake. I admit it, I was hesitant because I had a faux cheesecake at a Vegan restaurant that tasted like flan - this cheesecake however tastes like the real deal and is so chock-full pf peanut butter flavour it's insane. Don't try and have an intense conversation while eating this, because it's full of stick to the roof of your mouth pb goodness.

This was my first trip to the Heartwood, but it will not be my last!

We went on a Saturday and it was our first visit.  We both had portobello burgers which came with spicy rice on the side.  The burgers were totally delicious and so was the rice.  The burgers tasted of garlic and balsamic and came garnished with green leaf lettuce, red tomato slices, sliced purple onion and a drizzle of mayo. The food tasted good, fresh and healthy and we savoured every bite.  Our glasses of water were replenished by the helpful waiter from a clear glass pitcher.  The other staff were nice and friendly too.  I would recommend this restaurant for a good tasting, healthy and enjoyable meal.

After a few too many more visits for peanut butter cheesecake, I finally decided to visit the Heartwood for an actual meal despite the fear that this would be the dining equivalent of forcing a relationship out of a booty call.

For this long-time vegetarian, the menu was completely overwhelming after years of only have four or five choices at any given restaurant. Basically, I panicked, choosing the Heartwood bowl as a starting point considering its 'signature' status. The server recommended the spicy peanut sauce to top it off, and I was good to go.

The bowl? It should be called a bucket because that 'ish is huge. HUGE. It came out as a mound of fresh vegetables, nicely spiced chunks of tofu, roasted sweet potato, leafy greens, and delicious brown rice, all making sweet, tasty love in a delightful peanut sauce the likes of which I've never found outside of Europe.

Hearty, satisfying, and enough left over for dinner. Which is probably a good thing because it didn't come cheap at $17. Was it worth the cash? Absolutely...but a $20 bill won't be easy to fit into a usual lunchtime rotation.

I have a long relationship with food and businesses involving food to know how much most things cost and how most things are made. I am willing to pay for what I'm getting, whether it's a can of beans or a gourmet meal.

Based on this, I was disappointed when my food finally arrived (there were two other people in that day and it took the waitress half an hour after noticing us just to take our order) and I realized I was paying 15 dollars for a bowl full of cabbage and peanut butter. I am not a vegan but I love vegan food and believe there is no reason vegan food needs to be bland. I can't remember what my dish was called and it was possible that it was just that dish and that day. The food was super cheap (in a bad way) and bland . The service was really flaky and the meal was highly overpriced. My boyfriend had a pretty boring sandwich of some kind as well. I wanted water the whole time, asked and never got it. I probably won't be going back.

Awesome vegetarian, vegan and Gluten free options in this home style cooked food place.

We had the soup of the day and an amazing burger that was awesome. Service was great, fast, friendly and very affordable. If you are visiting halifax and love healthy, local organic food, then this is a must eat place for you.

They also have some pretty amazing deserts. I'm hooked and would go back in a heartbeat to heartwood.

Heartwood has been my favorite vegetarian/vegan restaurant--nay, my favorite restaurant--in Halifax for a long time. Well, to be more honest, it's been my favorite since they changed from their old pay-by-weight system. They were kind of weird then. And the food was mediocre. BUT! Nowadays heartwood is brilliant. They have some of my most favorite dishes ever. Hands down best vegan pizza in Halifax (yes, expensive, but DELICIOUS!). Best vegan sandwich (avacado tomato FTW!!!). Amazing noodle bowls. Just epic. EPIC.

Go there & eat. Now. Bring non-vegetarians, too. I have and they loved it.

This is the best all vegetarian restaurant in Halifax. I'm so glad they switched from that pay-by-weight format that drives me crazy at places like Le Commensal in Toronto.

Heartwood is vegan-friendly and has great baked items you can get to-go. The staff are so friendly in that true Haligonian way. There are a lot of gluten-free options, such the burrito which I recommend. It's less that mexican style refried beans this-can't-be-good-for-you and more a healthy granola(no actual granola in it) burrito but still tasty.

If you've never been, the rice bowl is probably the best way to go on the first visit. It is fresh kale, veggies and tofu served on a heaping pile of brown rice. I like it with the housemade peanut sauce.

I never made it for the brunch but I've heard really good things. The breads, especially the sourdough are ridiculously good. You don't need a dining partner, I liked to go it alone here at the first sign of sniffles for their hearty and delicious soups. There's a little bar area at the front window where you can relax, read the Coast and watch the frozen people outside.

I went to Heartwood today and of course it was delightful.

We went at a quiet hour- only a few peeps in the restaurant. Undivided attention, hello! I ordered the broccoli & red cabbage salad which was good... but maybe a little too much cabbage. Pre order, I figured it must be mixed in with a little bit of greens, but no. Pure broccoli and cabbage. FYI. Still delightful. I'll try something else next time though...

Service was sweet and attentive. Full-on water refills in a pleasant, untrying manner. Sometimes that can be tricky to pull that off... but our server was just a genuine sweetie! The soup of the day was a potato lemon dill collaboration which was absolutely delicious... like nothing I've had before. I'll be curious to check out the soup next time!

My friend had the avocado & tomato sandwich. A little tricky to eat but great presentation and delicious all the same. Rave reviews were the end result.

Another fantastic Heartwood experience. Safe to say I'm hooked. Next time I'm getting dessert!

Okay, so I LOVE the Heartwood, and yes, I have some stake in the game. I've worked here and have a lot of friends on the inside - BUT - I love it for tangible reasons. I shall divulge further and you can judge for yourself:

    1. Amazing food: Fresh ingredients, innovative menu options, bountiful portion sizes with no skimping on any of the good stuff.

    2. Sweet staff: Friendly, laid back servers and playful, creative chefs and bakers. Everyone is super nice and easy-going creating a delightfully relaxed and warm environment.

    3. Healthy alternatives: You can still eat sweets, but hey, they use maple syrup instead of refined sugar plus local organic flours! AND there are vegan options for days. If you're gluten intolerant, than this is your place to be free!

    4. Cool art: Rotating art shows create a fresh and inviting space where you can not only eat amazing meals but also check out local talent - does it get any better than this?

So I'm gushing, right? Just oozing with compliments and praise, but it's all for a good reason. This is the best vegetarian and vegan restaurant in the city plus the best place to go if you want to eat something healthy and filling. Don't take my word for it - go in and try something! If you're not the type to eat many veggies or tofu then it may be a little strange for you at first, but relax into it and you're bound to be swept away by a sea of all that is heavenly. I recommend the wild card salad, the soup of the day, the TLT sandwich and any of the pizzas. Oh yeah, and the special of the day is always superb.

Last week was my first time heading into Heartwood Bakery and Cafe and I certainly wasn't disappointed.

The wide selection of Numi tea's (mmm, monkey king jasmine green) as well as others was certainly a good start!

The daily specials looked delicious and i'll be back to try one of either the (or all three) key lime pie, pumpkin pecan cheesecake or chocolate peanut butter cheesecake!

The place was busy even at 3pm on a Thursday which is always a good sign in my books! Cute little old melodigrand piano in the corner along with counter seating along the window, allowing for some quinpool rd people watching.

I was recently turned onto Heartwood by a friend who digs the vegetarian and organic dining options that they offer. I don't mean they offer SOME organic and vegetarian dishes, that's actually all they offer, and at first it made me hesitant to try it out.

I was surprised at how homey this cafe felt and not at all like the smokey little coffee shop I was imagining in my head (There's something about the name Heartwood makes me conjure images of a little hippy hangout). I ordered a sandwich that was loaded with veggies, but my favorite part was the bread, homemade and delicious!

I learned quickly that everything at Heartwood Bakery and Cafe tastes better when you can sit and eat it in. If you have time to kill and want a healthy treat this is your spot. (Another plus is that there are copious amounts of sprouts on everything, yum!)

If you're twenty something and vegan, this is the perfect Saturday brunch spot.   If you're like me,...a little older, you'll be happier going during the week.  Let it be known that between 11am & 2pm on Saturday they only serve from a limited brunch menu.   I

I popped by last Wednesday before meeting up with my daughter and her toddlers (age 1 & 3) to see if it would make a good lunch spot for all of us.  In a word...not for little ones.  The mood was very ZEN and menu reminded me of Fresh, a wonderful vegetarian restaurant in Toronto - with lots of rice/noodle bowls.  They also had pizza options as well that sounded delicious.

Since I wasn't going there for lunch with two rowdy boys, I decided to go with my Husband, who is much better behaved.   My disappointment was that they only have a limited menu for Saturday brunch  (we thought we'd be eating from the lunch menu).   There certainly were some dishes that were less breakfast and more lunch, but we ended up ordering the carrot soup.  It was delicious - very "buttery" although I doubt that there was any butter in the soup...and very gingery.  It was served with garlic toasts made of spelt sourdough.

Service was very slow and unattentive and the place was noisy.  Perhaps that would be better during the week as well.

After many frustrating attempts to eat here, only to find it closed, I finally managed to get a meal at Heartwood. Delicious. This is one place that really reminds me of the west coast, in a way that is good to me but may be a turn off to others. If you are one of those others, buzz off, this hippie ish is tasty.

My appetite was light that evening, so I went for a bowl of lentil soup, which tasted wholesome and evenly spiced, and was served with some hearty bread - enough to share with my friend. She ordered a taco salad on advice from our waitress. It was good advice to take; lots of beans, chips and fresh greens to smash around and devour.

During our visit the art on the walls was a cool series of collages by local gal Valerie Salez. I loved the penguins and elephants marching in lines around me while I ate. Overall a great atmosphere, friendly service and satisfying food. I'll gladly go again - if I can only catch them when they're open.
