I have lived in the southeast for years.  I spent 17 of those years in Atlanta, so I know this airport well from the perspective of a local (going through security, the ticket counters, baggage claim, etc).  But several years ago I moved to Chattanooga, so now I only see this airport when I change planes here, so that's how I'm writing this review.

While this airport is huge and that can seem overwhelming to someone who's never been here before, it's really laid out well.  There are 7 concourses (A through F and the "T" gates) and most of the airlines are grouped together.  (Delta occupies A, B, half of C, and part of D).  Concourse E (and newly opened Concourse F) are the International Terminals.  You can get to each of the concourses by way of a train, which runs every couple of minutes.  It lets you out in the center of the concourse.

Navigation is easy.  There are signs everywhere... as long as you can read, you can find where you need to go.  That being said, this is one of the worlds busiest airports... so it's crowded and there's always a lot of people moving about.  If you are changing planes here, I plan for at least an hour between flights... more during the spring months due to the potential for bad weather in the Atlanta area.  Sure, if you're flying Delta, it might seem daunting to have to go from D37 to A19 (as I did recently), but it only took me 15 minutes during the busiest part of the day (and that included a bathroom break).

Getting around this airport is much better than any number of other places regularly fly in and out of. You should never have to exit security to get to another gate... whether you are changing planes or changing airlines (Here's looking at you, SFO).  In ATL, you'll never look at a TSA line if you have a layover here.

The best thing about ATL is that there are shops and restaurants *everywhere*.  You have a wide range from fast food and small kiosk-style shops on the ends of the concourses all the way up to full-service restaurants and high-end specialty shops in the center of the concourse.  If you need it and you can't find it in the airport, then you aren't looking hard enough.

ATL has recently finished remodeling all of the concourses too... so everything is sparking and shiny.  They do a good job of keeping it clean too... all the way down to the bathrooms.  I very rarely see an excessively dirty bathroom here.

So, yes... I am a fan of the Atlanta airport.  see you there soon!

    Airport schmareport.

Some times bigger is not always better.  This place is hugeeeee g,   Caroline. Get ready to walk and pack a snack or two as this is a major hub. Tons of selections for food just pack extra money.

Just in case you hate crowds don't come here. With all the hustle and bustle this airport is like a small city shopping mall with a food court.  with almost every service you could need from shopping to nail salon, massage, and all types of food.

Hartsfield-Jackson, you little bittersweet experience an airport, you. The sheer size of this portal is monstrous and the level of efficiency is somewhat on par. Were I not the unfortunate recipient of what felt like a cross-country high school meet, I might like this place more. But no, D41 was my arrival gate and A1 my connecting flight's departure gate.

The time in between: 10 minutes.

How to describe it? Oh you know, a sweat-inducing, anxiety-laden and overall panic-driven encounter as I beat the clock and the floor from one concourse to the next.

My performance? Generally impressive, I'd say, and the hell-bent hurtle felt somewhat rewarding (thanks, fellow flyers who clapped as I raced). And also, thanks destiny, for not making my heels clip the back of my carry-on to ultimately result in an ego-crushing spill.

A fan? Can't say I really am. But it is an airport after all. And I made my flight. So there's that.

As I walked through the concourse, a young woman turned to me, and asked, "Why do we have to walk so FAR?" As our conversation unfolded, I learned it was her first flight, and HJAIA was more enormous than she had imagined. But, compared to some airports I've been in, this one seems relatively easy to navigate. My first trip here was in 1999, and I've never felt lost. But, I do like to walk, and generally believe in the motto: "To be early is to be on time." I might feel less generous if I carried more weight or felt rushed.
A big plus for me is decent public transportation. The Marta train terminal is next to baggage claim. There are two tracks for the two main north-south lines: to North Springs or to Doraville.

Always good for a good jolt of panic and fear. I can't for the life of me understand how after all this time, ATC still hasn't been able to coordinate flights in such a way that people aren't knocking old ladies over, sprinting to their connecting terminal so as not to miss their next flight. Of all the airports I've connected in (and there have been many), none puts the fear of god in a traveler quite like Hartsfield-Jackson. Kudos, Atlanta.

Holy Moly this airport is big and spread out. So big, that it doesn't just have one train system to shuffle passengers to their gate. No, they have a separate train to take you to the rental car center as well.

This airport is a prime example of what hosting the Olympics can do for a city. I have little doubt that the airport that existed pre-1996 bares little resemblance to the sparkling, mall-like experience passengers have today.

All kinds of food, shopping, art and space. Plus, this is a heavily traveled airport so I find the TAS and airport employees an edge more efficient than other places.

As far as airports go, I am a fan of this one...

This airport is big and crowded. As usual, my connecting plane is in a different terminal. So I get to take the Tram. I wish they would have more vertical bar to hang onto. Seven people holding the same bar while the non-bar areas are empty. Yes, you need the bar or else you will be flat on your ass as soon as the tram moves.

If you know where you are going there are plenty of signs to guide you. If you don't know where you need to be, you are SOL. Everyone is hustling to get somewhere and no time to give you assistance. Better yet, just hang out in one of the many restaurants or bars inside.

This airports okay.  Its huge, and for the most part I've only had to connect here, so I can't really comment on the security (are they touchy-touchy, do they give good pat-downs, all that), but quite honestly, I've been stuck in airports for hours on end before, and if I had to get stuck in any one, again, for a layover or a delay, ATL is a good place to be - because there is EVERYTHING.

    booze
    shopping
    eating
    shopping
    mani/pedis

and if I'm really bored, I can just ride that stupid train around.

If I reviewed this a few short years ago, it would have been a 2 star review.  But I have to say that there has been a lot of hard work over the past few years to clean this place up.  It's a nice airport.  Good dining options, some shopping (I've seen better though), very CLEAN, organized, good transportation.  Even the rental car center/monorail is spotless and well organized.

Yeah, you are going to get delays.  This is what happens when you are the king of busy airports.  I rather be stuck here than in Newark.

So MOBBED! Walls of people slamming every which way, which is not the best set-up when you just have a few minutes to catch a flight. Granted, I was flying on a Friday which I don't usually do- but this airport seemed outta control.

At least there were lots of food choices. My standards are pretty low for airports, but I feel like if there's a Chick Fil A and Cinnabon (which I don't have in CT and crave every day), then this is an A-Ok place.

Maybe I'd feel differently if I missed my flight. Oh well. 3 stars for now!

Lots of people, but it was kinda designed for that.  The worst part of this airport is finding a Pepsi product (Coke is based in Hotlanta, ladys and gents).  There are a couple oasis (oasii?) for your Mountain Dew fix if you look hard enough (Pro-tip:
    Freshën's near the Chik-fil-a)

As far as airports go, its not bad. I've seen much worse. Its beyond my crowd-comfort, but hey most airports are! Plus, you have to watch it for the little subway shuttles that take you from concourse to concourse. Get in them fast! The door WILL CLOSE on you or your children! We had a little incident there!

I like the food court area with the charging stations - this impressed the heck out of me! Then, the piano in the food court. When arriving, there was a woman playing beautiful music.

Liked the food selection and abundance of seating. Good job Atlanta! Me-Likey!

We were here over the weekend to attend a wedding.  I've been through my fair share of airports.  From the tiny ones like the South Bend Michiana Regional Airport to the giant ones like London Heathrow and Chicago O'hare.

Hartsfield seems to be just as easy to navigate as any other average airport.  The one thing that threw me off was the baggage claim was downstairs and the sign pointed elsewhere for ground transportation.  "Hmm, if I need baggage claim, how do I get back here to get to ground transportation."  Turns out that you just go through baggage claim and up an escalator and you're back on track.  No big deal.

The train for the rental car center is fast, though the air from the outside smells a little like a bathroom when you board.

We didn't make any wrong turns, except for the dead end in the ticketing area.  You think you could get to ground transportation from there, but you have to walk around a divider to get to the door.  Doesn't make any sense.

On the way back, everything was fine.  American Airlines is all the way at the end.  It's kind of a trek from the door from the rental car area.

This airport is HUGE but they have the connecting shuttles between all the concourses.  I wouldn't try to walk from concourse to concourse unless you have a lot of time on your hands because the distance between concourses is way longer than you think it is.

The concourses, from what I have seen, are all pretty clean and neat.  Everything looks NOT DILAPIDATED (cough cough I'm talking to you, LaGuardia, JFK Terminal 3 Delta, and Newark Airports) and there are plenty of shops and restaurants in each terminal.

I like Hartsfield-Jackson. The number one reason is that MARTA is super easy to use and generally gets you there easily and on time. Unlike JFK or OAK you don't have to deal with another bus after you get off the train--you are there once you get off.

The food choices in the Delta terminals is just ok, but that's fine enough for me. The Wolfgang Puck to-go does decent salads--especially the Feta/Greek.

Security lines are generally not too terrible and the screeners seem to know what they are doing.

And most of my flights depart on time and arrive early--which of course I love.

This is a good airport. I have flown in and out of Atl many times and it's pretty convenient. It's well organized and very efficient for how many people travel through it everyday. It's never taken me more than an hour to get from the front of the airport to my gate.

The only downside of using Hartsfield-Jackson is flying internationally. If you are returning from overseas you have to go through security before you are allowed into the main airport (even though you went through security at your city of origin) even if Atlanta is your final destination. This means that anything liquid (i.e. alcohol, cologne, etc) you got duty-free overseas will get confiscated in Atlanta. They are opening an international terminal soon and hopefully this problem will be fixed.

The atrium and area before the security checkpoint is pretty lame with the "Atlanta Bread Company" being the only decent choice for food. Avoid Houlihan's like the plague, it is absolutely awful in every way.

    WHAT A HUGE airport! O. M. Goodness!!!!! I had a connecting flight in Atlanta w/a 2-hour layover so I decided to go to my favorite store L'Occitane for my free hand massage and goodie bag. My connecting flight was on concourse D while L'Occitane is on level A :-O. It took me;
30 minutes to walk from D to A.
                            15 minute massage
15 minutes to shop around for body/face care products
5 minutes to get back to D once I found out there was a terminal train to connect to each concourse :-////.

All in all, it was a good experience to kill time doing one of my fave things....shopping! :-)

There are many shops and resturants. A massage parlor and a few bars. The rumor is true...no free WIFI

I have been through this airport COUNTLESS times. SO many connecting flights. And I still cannot make it home. The layout just sucks. It is good that they have a tram that connects you to the different terminals but to this day I still get confused on where the good food places are and which terminal houses what.

Overall, my flights have been good about getting out on time here (no snow) which is a plus. If they added better food places and confused me less so I did not get lost everytime I would bump up the rating. Until then...

I've been through this airport many times, flying on different airlines - Delta, United, US Air, AirTran, British Airways, etc. No doubt, it's a huge airport and very busy. But they run a well-oiled machine here. If you're flying Delta, expect to take off and land from any concourse and keep an eye on your connection times.

I recently flew AirTran, my first time. I was impressed with AirTran. I was late for my flight (just missed the 45 minute check-in cutoff). The agent, though very calm and slow in her actions, confirmed and booked me for the next flight and even bumped me up to an exit row seat for free. It made the extra four hour wait more bearable.

AirTran has their gates in one half of the C concourse. At the end near C1, they have plug-in stations for you to charge your electronics. Also, they serve free coffee!

The only tip I have is that AirTran is strict about your carry-on luggage so be sure to adhere to policy!

The food selection is good -- many of the areas could use more seating.
Of course, there is no snow, but there are thunderstorms.  And when the airport gets backed up, it will stay backed up for awhile.

    A big-ass airport. Yep, that's ATL.

I frequently find myself on multi-hour layovers here, but the time always seems to fly by! No, it's not because I'm having fun. It's because this place is so huge that it takes forever to get from one terminal to another.

There's some pretty decent food choices in every terminal, so don't bother with hiking all over the place if you don't have to. It's mostly southern or fried stuff, but you can find the occasional smoothie or sandwich shop too.

And there's no free wifi. Yeah, that sucks.

Man, what a huge airport!  I actually got lost in there.  LOL!  Thanks to the staff there that got me back to where I was supposed to exit.

There's practically a mall in there!  You could shop for books, clothing, jewelry, electronics and much more.  Hell, there's even a mini suite hotel in there!

Again, this place is huge that you need to take the tram to go anywhere, in and out.  I love the fact that the trams arrive promptly.

Now, the last time I was here, I was coming back from Puerto Vallarta.  My plane was delayed for several hours.  I just wanted to come home so I was cranky with the multiple delays.

This time when returning home, my plane was delayed 3 times but within a span of 45 minutes.  There was nothing but beautiful weather outside so I don't understand this delay thing!

    Don't do that again, m'kay?

This airport may look nice but it was one big airport. My connecting flight was at this airport. It was good that both airlines of my two flights were the same (Delta Airlines), but it was a long walk to the connecting gate. If my layover wasn't 30 minutes, then it wouldn't matter.

I was power walking across the terminal at a decent pace and there were no walking escalators. I almost missed my connecting flight since my walk was from one side of the terminal to the opposite end.

Avoid connecting at this airport especially if your airlines are different and if your layover is less than 40 minutes. I barely made my flight but a little too close for comfort.

This place can be a total shitshow, especially if you aren't accustomed to flying. Fortunately, I landed late and departed early, so I avoided the rush of idiots.

ATL is one of the busiest airports and its size reflects that. There is a train that takes you from terminal to terminal and long escalators that separate each section.

Security was a breeze and so was check-in, but as I said, I had a very early flight.

My only big gripe is that they need stairs instead of two escalators because people do not seem to get the unwritten "keep right, pass left" rule. I do not like being stuck behind a ton of people because they don't know any better (and also, what if I'm in a rush, as I usually am?). Yes, that is the NJ-NY coming out in me, but additional stairs really would be an improvement. Also, everyone could always use a little extra exercise!

    Big-airport-itis.

Delta stacks up the flights so tight that in case of a stiff breeze, all the planes are an hour late.

Once you get off the plane, it's about 30 minutes to get out of the damn place.  That's if you don't check luggage.

The concessions are okay, but not terribly notable.  Nothing here has ever made me want to return for more.  Come to think of it, other than typical fast food, I couldn't name a restaurant here.

One good thing about it is that security is centralized, so that once behind the gate you don't have to go through it again.  The bad thing is, security here is terrible.  I've literally had a 2 hour wait on a Saturday morning for a 10am flight.  What other place is this bad?  I've been in other airports where they had to empty the whole airport because someone left a door open, and it still didn't take 2 hours to run EVERYONE back through on a Friday afternoon.  It's not always this bad, but it forces you to arrive 2.5 hours early JUST IN CASE.  It's typically 30-45 minutes.  Elite status?  Unless you're Gold+ Elite, you can wait on the long line like everyone else.

Normally I don't compare businesses in a review, but I make an exception for airports.

LAX is still the sh**iest airport in the world.

I have flown through here a few times and a few things I like: the big TV monitors with departures, the tram system to get one from Concourse D to A, the food variety here is very good with a lot of different options on all concourses, I also like that every gate has a few TV screens to watch the game or the news.

ATL is not the worst airport out there (that honor goes to LAX) but it is the busiest. Hopefully, it won't rain the day you travel or flights will be backed up forever. Plan on at least 30 minutes of taxi/runway time. If you have a tight connect....you're totally not going to make it.

Complaints aside - the seating areas here are pretty clean and comfortable. Given the overall size (massive) I'm surprised how many flights do leave or arrive on time. And, you're guaranteed some great people watching.

They seriously need better places to eat - specifically in Concourse D. I don't consider Chilis and Burger King legitimate options. And paid Wifi...seriously? Cone on, Atlanta, help a girl out!

Lots of delays due to thunderstorms in the summer but, I must admit, they do a good job of managing through the weather.

While there are many food options, they all are pretty mediocre.

    Not so good:

    1. Have to pay for wi-fi.
    2. Due to its massive size, it is sometimes a pain in the ass getting from one gate to another.

Not the worst airport in the world, but certainly not the best either.

The Atlanta International Airport is a lot like an amusement park. Tons of unattended kids and plane loads of families who just can't get their ish together.

I don't know if it's High School senior trip time or there was cry baby convention in town, but this airport and the amount of kids, children, babies, and teens was maddening. Also maddening are the parents who think it's cute to let their baby-steppin' kid attempt to wheel his/her roll-y bag down the ultra busy middle of the terminals by themselves. Stopping to stare and wander and jam up the traffic flow for everyone else. Quick Fix: Pick your kid up and be their parent, not their travel companion. It's great that your kid learned how to walk 2 days ago but they've got the whole rest of their life to come to the Atlanta Airport and gum up the works- maybe wait out the airport walking until they're old enough to read a map and know where they're going.

    //end child rant.

Once you get to the tram rail on the lower level this airport becomes a cinch (less all the families and minors). Everything is pretty straightforward as far as the layout and going through customs on the way back from and international flight was quick and simple.

The food options are mighty disappointing but Sweetwater Brewing Company's bar was a V. welcome sight. The information desk located by terminal E was interesting in that no one who worked there knew particularly good English and argued over who had to talk to people approaching. We found the rest of the staff here to be either V. rude or extremely personable- not a whole lot of middle ground.

As far as International Airports go, this one is one of the least scenic I've been to. Very dull and grey and the local art... well, I guess everyone has their own interpretation but I thought the mural/collage of notable African Americans through history with the phrase "Who dat?" among famous quotes was a pretty loose interpretation of art... but to each his own, I guess.

On cleanliness, a few garbages were overflowing of and though the women's bathroom in terminal B appeared clean, it smelled fiercely foul.

If you're ever in the Atlanta airport, plan on bringing your own form of entertainment should you have a layover, and take the time to find the tram for quick and easy navigation of the terminals.
