The big box stores have their place, and as far as I'm concerned it's in 2nd place F-A-R behind Hardware Sales!

Not only does Hardware Sales have an amazing array of inventory (if you can't find what you need here, it's probably not made), but their staff is nothing short of amazing.  Take in a do-hickey that you don't know anything about, and they'll explain what it is, what it does, how to repair/replace/install that do-hickey, and walk you to where it's located in the store.

We recently took in a lamp that wasn't working, thinking we were needing replacement parts.  One of the staff took us directly to the parts bin, pulled out the pieces he thought we'd need, and offered to install them right there.  He started to pull the lamp apart and discovered it would require a simple fix with no replacement parts, and took care of the problem on the spot.  No charge and no sale, but a pair of satisfied customers for sure!

I'm a fan of Hardware Sales and would encourage you to become one too!

As almost everybody else has said, this place has an amazing inventory.  They are right.  Even though Lowes and Home Depot have more square footage, these guys pack  stuff in from floor to ceiling (and the ceilings are really high).  I can't tell you how many items I've located things here that were nowhere else to be found in Bellingham.  True, if one of the big box stores has the same item it will likely be a bit cheaper there, but anytime I think that only Hardware Sales will have it, that's where I go.  Another big difference between them and the big national chains is that they have a large staff, with a lot of retired guys who actually know what they are talking about.  I once had to wire a switch, and I am electrically challenged, to say the least.  The guy in the electrical section drew me a detailed diagram of what to do.  Try getting that at Lowes.  Great place.  Great idea to patronize a local business that has been around for a long time.

Jeez....talk about crowded. Crowded with merchandise, crowded with people ( weekends mostly with people)
Merchandise piled sky high in the rafters, in every conceivable place in the building plus little out buildings with 'stuff". Place to buy coffee out in back.
The staff WILL find what you need if it is there. And if you are not sure what you need they will help you figure it out. If it is there the guy goes off and after dodging down an aisle he ends up on a ladder 20 feet up! If it's not there they will find out where it is in town and send you there!
5 stars for the customer service and minus 1 star for the total mind
F#*@K when you walk in and see all the crap! You have 3000 washers?!
WHAT?! Yep...not a place to walk into high....just saying

Every time I go to a hardware store, any hardware store, in the bay area, I'm reminded how much it's NOT hardware sales, whether it's the all too common worthless Ace Hardware stores or the local family owned places.

The more I write the less justice it will do this place. I've never gone to this place without coming out a better man.

The person who wrote the four star review should be shot...with a nail gun or staple gun. A knowledgeable salesperson at Hardware Sales would definitely be able to recommend which of the two would be more effective.

If you ever want to see chaos in a box just come here. They have everything under the sun and its all crammed into one building.

Just stop by and ask them for anything and they seem able to find it. I have no idea how, but it is truly amazing.

Hardware Sales is the best! Has everything you could ever want to get your projects done and their staff is extremely helpful to find whatever you're looking for.
I was in the rental shop the day before thanksgiving trying to get a saw for a quick cut on a door. They said "no no no, we got a table saw here, and since you are just making one cut go ahead and set it up out back." They let me use a drill for the hinge holes too, I made my cuts and holes and was done with the project. These guys made a great start to my holiday being so incredibly generous.

I sometimes Pretend that hardware sales is a gaybar from the 1970s.
It's loud. Sweaty, Lots of moustaches and black boots. And even as a gay male who can hardly handle a hammer---this place makes me feel right at home when I am working on a project!!
But seriously folks the customer service is legendary---and from what I hear the ladies night is off the hook. They are an amazing retailer in bellingham.  Thumbs way up.

You can do anything if you have the right tools. Where to get them? Hardware Sales has everything! Any screw, nail hammer, hardware, ropes, chains, key cutting, paints, everything. This establishment is one of the things I will truly miss about Bellingham when I have to depart. Great service, great people, plenty of parking, great store. Don't miss it.

I'll tell you, if Hardware sales doesnt have it, it probably doesn't exist.  Only bad thing about hardware sales I that I always spend way more time there then I ever intend.    Its not because the employees dont help out, its just that I often end up browsing too much.

A vast array of thing-a-ma-jigs, doohickeys, and other stuff.  It is nice to have a hardware store that is as interesting as this one is around.

The only con I have about it (other than getting lost in all the stuff, a plus also, no?) is that about half the time whatever I want is on the balcony level.  The balcony just isn't that large, why is half the stuff I want up there?  They should put OTHER peoples wants up there :)

Hardsware Sales is in the best tradition of locally owned hardware stores...redolent of solvents, rope and zinc, dimly lit, maze-like and stuffed to the rafters with anything and everything.  The staff is friendly and they know the place like the back of their hands.  The prices are on par with the competition, although its the mind blowing selection that will keep you  coming back.
PLUS: JOB SEEKERS AND FORMER EMPLOYEES REJOICE!  Alta has finally gone on to her reward!

Although I didn't find what I was looking for here, an employee pointed me in the right direction. Better yet, told me where I could get what I was looking for used and about a fifth of the price! (dishwasher wheels, $10-15 new at maytag vs. $2 used at Appliance Depot). Its enough for an employee to give a suggestion, but when they're thoughtful enough to save you a few bucks, the business deserves your support! I'll be back for all my hardware needs!

Always knowledgeable staff.  If Hardware Sales doesn't have it on the shelf (and that would be unheard of), they will order it for you, at no extra charge and barely any wait time.  Don't forget to visit the back lot, the warehouse, and the used-furniture building out back.  Also don't forget your coupon - the Valpak has a Hardware Sales coupon every month good for something like $3 off $25 or $10 off $75 purchase.

I went in here looking for some parts and hardware to fix a broken door and these people were extremely helpful and courteous.  I'll certainly go here again even though the prices are a tad bit high for what they're selling.  Get here if you need anything for your home, garden, office, or car that involves hardware!

They have everything you could want, and the staff is very helpful and courteous. Which is good, because you'll have a hard time finding anything.

The best part of this store is the fastener isles. They have any nut, bolt, washer, screw, or nail you could think of... in standard AND metric.

The prices are higher than the nation chain stores, but they are a local business, and they earn and deserve your support.

they beat the box stores hands down. They have a informed staff that will take the time to help with our diy projects from tools to materials to advice on options and alternatives. tell them what you want to accomplish and they can tell you how.

Prices are fair and they have great warranties.  They have single items such as drill bits so you don't have to buy packs like you do everywhere else.  The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. The only thing they could do slightly better is have SOME wood.  I have had only one bad experience there, and I've shopped there all of my life. Once I did call to ask if they were open, and the lady literally said "that's why I'm answering the phone."  *shrugs*
They have the items I need and can never find at lowes.
