so when i first walked into "Hardware" i snapped a photo of the first display i saw (which by the way was a beautiful cabinet made from old style printers trays with one of the owners paintings sitting atop it and the two fused if you will, by a few black tomes lying down at their leisure to one side).  immediately there was concern - it wasnt appreciated - BUT the woman at the front addressed it, asked me whether i was from a particular magazine, or company (i dont quite remember, but the important thing is she inquired). they said theyd prefer that id have asked before i took pictures of the artists/owners work.  i didnt realize that it was necessarily made objects versus bought ones, but nonetheless, i agree and apologized.  now, the whole point of this story is to illustrate that i entered then, into a very educational and productive dialogue with the owner for, i believe, the both of us.  Me about his work, him and the store (which equips me much more thoroughly to discuss my opinion of those things) and him (Murray is his name) to this site and its benefits.  Its a better world when we can talk.

so the furniture and accessories in the store are created by Murray and his staff from reclaimed metal, wood and other materials.  they are put together with such élan and forward thinking that they are a pleasure to gawk at.  Murray showed me a cabinet,  for example, the doors of which were paintings of his own creation - sexy swirls of golden colour, cursive writing, spotty drippings of paint and protected to a shine with resin. this piece, he said, was created for someone who didnt have a lot of wall space in their home yet wanted artwork to be displayed.  so thinking outside of the box and being forward with the thought of function made this happen.  furthermore, in this regard, he pointed out a cabinet he was in the process of making where the doors used to be the old windows of a house.  while referring to this piece he noted, as well, that as a feature of their business you could come in and commission a piece from the looks of another youve seen in the store - as in, i like this aspect, less of this aspect, a little smaller in size, etc. I suppose that  even if you had workable materials (like old doors, windows, metal etc) i bet he'd find a way to make it into something you like in his own way while using other materials he might have.  overall then, i found this experience with him and the store pleasurable and i would great about buying works of his for both their ingenuity and upcycling nature.

Beautiful furniture design.  They have a very unique aesthetic, utilizing old or discarded furniture/wood in a way that makes it fresh, modern and new.

The staff are generally quite helpful.  They also do custom design work, which can get pricey depending on the complexity and finish of the piece.  Although they are good at budgeting price, they are generally over budget on time allocation.

A great store to go in for inspiration of how to mix old and new (modern) design with furniture and millwork.
