Review from John B.

I view my dining experiences like I view movies. Whilst I am always holding out for a 'Shawshank Redemption' or a 'Godfather Part 2' sometimes, even with that level of quality on offer, I just want to settle in for some 'gets-the-job-done' fare and slide 'Speed' into the DVD player (yes, I still have one of those...).
Happy Sushi is 'Speed' in this analogy. Even though it's not winning any critics choice awards, you simply can't deny it does what it does very well and therefore it's easy to get swept along.
The price is right. Ridiculously so. $17 (tip is included) for an all-you-can-eat lunch that includes rice, noodles, meat, tempura, rolls, sushi pizza, edamame, miso... pretty much the basic spectrum of sushi offerings? That's pretty damn good. And the fact that the sushi is actually not bad at all... well, sign me up for repeat viewings ad-nauseum. The dinner menu is a little more, but it throws in sashimi for good measure.
Yup, I said 'not bad at all'. It's not amazing (nothing I have ordered has ever blown me away) but similarly I haven't wrinkled up my nose at anything either. When I first moved to Halifax from Vancouver 2 years ago, one of my biggest disappointments was the sushi scene here. Sure, there's AMAZING sushi to be had in Hali (Shige's sushi pizza rivals anything I ever had on the West coast) but Holy Haamachi, is it ever expensive! Coming from a city where $10 would buy you world-class raw fishy goodness, I was pretty bummed that to replicate the experience in Halifax cost me over $40. And whilst I will always have a hankering for the good stuuf, and therefore always frequent the Shige's and Doraku's of this fine Maritime land, you really cannot beat hunkering down at Happy Sushi and having free-run of the extensive menu and still coming away with change from a twenty.
It can be a little slow if it's busy (which it is, often) but come on, if you're opting for 'all-you-can-eat' I doubt you're in any kind of rush. Sit back, relax and let the sushi apocalypse wash over you. -

A group of us went for a late Saturday dinner, excited for lots of yummy all you can eat Sushi. We certainly got it, but not quickly. Even when the rush that was going on when we arrived died down, service while friendly was painfully slow. They do give a time limit on dinner in the menu, but they didn't enforce or even mention it.
Service aside the experience was great. I've had better sushi in town, but not by much. I think the price we paid for what we got was a great, great value. There was a lot more selection than I had anticipated and the atmosphere was good.
I would definitely go back. ;) -

It is not the best sushi out there, but if you like sushi and are on a budget, it is a great place to go. The staff is always friendly and unless it is really busy, I have always found the service top notch. The last time when it was packed, things were slow and it was hard at times to flag down one of the staff, but was understandable given how busy they were.
Nothing on the menu is worth writing home about. My advice is go in and just enjoy the sushi. While there are other things to choose from, the best bang for your buck is the sushi. I have enjoyed the veal ribs and the pork or chicken don with egg. The tempura is fine as well, as are the dumplings.
Several sushi, maki roll and hand roll options. I stick to the regular sushi, sometimes opting for a sushi pizza which are tasty as well.
If you go for supper you have a few more options on the menu and sashimi which is not available on the lunch menu. I personally love my sushi rice, so don't miss the sashimi myself. On Monday to Thursday lunch for $16.30, tax and tip included if you pay with cash can't be beat if you are a big sushi eater.
If you are hungry and on a budget, give Happy Sushi a try, if you want great Japanese food give Suzuki on Dresden Row a try!Listed in: With a Little Help From My…

This is not a place for quality, this is a place for quantity.
I personally would rather a few pieces of amazing fresh quality sushi then a 40 piece platter of low qulaity.
However that being said my boyfriend had a blast ordering all kinds of different items, unusual types of sushi he would never order normally.
Your price will end up to about $55.00 for the all you can eat, for him he loved it, for me I would rather pay the $25 a meal for the delicious items I usually order elsewhere. -

I have been eating AYCE for a long time, especially when I travel to Toronto, Vancouvor and Calgary. Most of them like Happy Sushi here are cheap but low to Ok quality. I have been here couple time since it was open. A good selection of food but the quality is not always consistant.
It seems a very popular assumption among Asian restaurants in Canada that Buffet equal to cheap and low quality. But in Asia, I hear AYCE does not necessarily mean that. There are a lot of high-end buffet restaurants (would love to try some time).Listed in: AYCE Yeah

I was skeptical at first when I heard about `all you can eat' sushi. But who can pass up on reasonably priced sushi?! We tried out Happy Sushi on a Saturday night and the place was busy. Not too busy but there was a constant flow of customers.
The menu was quite extensive with an appetizer section, tempura section, maki section, sushi section, handroll section and sashimi section. For a cost of about $24, you can order all the sushi you can eat, plus have a pop or tea and ice cream for dessert.
The two of us just ordered dishes to split all night. We probably ended up eating what would be about $100 worth of sushi at any other restaurant. As for the food, it is good--not the best in the city--but the best bang for your buck.
The atmosphere was nice and the service was excellent. There was no point when we had to chase down a server. That is saying a lot for the amount of dishes that we constantly coming to people's tables.
All in all, it is an experience you need to have. I know that we will be back there soon!

Happy Sushi Restaurant ? I think not.
Ecstatic Sushi Restaurant ! Much better.
The food was exceptional. It was a little brightly lit but the staff was friendly, everything was spotless, a great social atmosphere and did I mention the food? I am not sure how it is possible for these folks to serve what they do on a flat rate of $22. Love the all you can eat rule. Anything left on your plate will be charged at full price.
Not a single bad thing to say about this place. Visit now and visit often. -

I was back with different friends on Feb 12th and we had a good time, it's a nice place to take friends that are learning about sushi because you can try everything, share and have no regrets. As you'd expect we tried most everything on the menu including freaky octopus etc. You're right, it's not high end sushi it's all you can eat sushi. I'm not an all-you-can-eat kinda gal but this place is fun! Even healthy if you don't eat as much tempura as I did :)

As this is the only All-you-can-eat sushi establishment in the city it's hard to create an accurate rating due to the lack of competition.
Over all this place is rates high on my over all experience however; and I've eaten at alot of places like this around Canada in my travels.
The service is wonderful, staff are very fast and efficient getting orders out. The food, failure to what some people feel is quite tasty and for the amount you can potentially eat the price is right.
Lunch is about $15/PP and dinner is about $25/PP before tip. They offer 10% off if you pay with cash.
The price change is due to what they offer, some of the more expensive cuisine is on the dinner; due to the more expensive ingredients and higher preparation time.
If your worried about the price, just think of it this way; for the amount you can eat of good, holism and healthy food this is a great investment.
Not only that, the social capabilities are grand. You can sit down as a group and indulge in new tastes together.
A welcome and refreshing change to Halifax's otherwise boring palate -

Full disclosure: Sushi doesn't quite do it for me. I like it, but I usually only eat it a few times a year when the craving really strikes.
Luckily for me, though, Happy Sushi has a delicious variety of my more favourite treat, tempura. You can have shrimp, but if you prefer a healthier bite, try the broccoli tempura. Who knew little green trees could be so good?
The restaurant is bigger inside than it looks outside, and very elegant yet casual. It doesn't have the over-the-top asian kitsch I'vee come to expect from most sushi restaurants.
The menu is vast and well organized. I was able to find a few sushi options I really liked, as well as some non-fishy options on the appetizer menu. The chicken teriyaki was very good!
Happy Sushi is a very different experience, in that everyone orders what they want on the same sheet, and the food arrives as it's ready throughout your meal. You have to remember who ordered what, because the dish aren't delivered to a specific person. It's great for sharing with friends, because everyone can order a bit of everything and pick off every plate.
Unless you're someone who can really tuck away quite a few rolls, it can be a little pricey. It's around $26 for the all you can eat buffet and a drink, but you'll save 10% by paying cash. Whatever you don't finish, though, adds up: the full cost of each roll you don't finish gets added to your tab. So watch out.
My only complaint is that if you're not there for the all-you-can-eat sushi, or if you're trying to determine which is the more expensive roll so you can make sure you eat it all first, the individual prices aren't located on the menu,
My advice, though, is to order a few items at first, and slowly keep ordering more to make sure that your eyes aren't bigger than your stomach, and your bill isn't bigger than your wallet. -

Wanna know why I love all you can eat sushi? Because, it's all you can eat!
Happy Sushi is pretty swell! Tonns of things to choose from with all of it being fresh. I also love how your orders just keep coming and your table always has food on it. The staff are quick which makes this concpet work so well.
The food is great. The sushi is tightly rolled and the sashimi is as fresh as can be. We love the tempura, and to add to our delight brocolli has been added. I never knew how delicious brocolli tempura could be.
Happy Sushi is a fabulous place to go with friends. It's a good way to try all the different options on the menu via plate picking. The food is good, the service is fantastic with a cozy atmosphere. Just remember, if you order to much and can't eat it you will be charged for left overs. So don't overindulge too much.
Tip: The rice and noodle portions are much larger than anything else, therefore you may want to stay away if you plan on ordering alot of anything else.
Also, if you pay with cash it's 10% cheaper! -

Just went here today with 2 friends. While there was a bigger rice ratio involved than at most places I am used to, it was still pretty yummy! We finished everything, and so did not end up getting charged more, which I have been told is your "fine" for wasting food. lol
You also get a discount if you pay in cash, which I should have done (didn't have any on me).
My only real issue with it is this: I am allergic to seafood and another of the girls with me doesn't eat it. But when it was brought to us, our yam rolls(vegetarian) were served on the same plate and touching the salmon rolls. I ate it anyways and didn't have a reaction, so I think that while it would seem like common sense to me to separate the two, I am also to blame for not specifying when we ordered.
All in all, not the best sushi have had (I have a huge love for Fujiyama) but I would definitely go back! -

I learned to love sushi while living in Ontario, so I've grown familiar to the concept of all-you-can-eat sushi and I love it. When I noticed Happy Sushi moved into Lacewood, I knew I wanted to try it, and see how it compared to going out for a regular dose of sushi at one of my other local favourites.
The staff here are great - they are prompt and efficient, and they keep the rolls coming. However, for the pricepoint, you really want to be visiting with a group so that you can maximize the range of options in front of you. I went with a friend, and we loved all the sushi we ate, but wished we had more at our table to diversify the choices we made. Bottom line - we filled up too fast!
All in all, a great way to introduce new people to sushi, enjoy a good range of options, and really stuff your face, if that's what you're looking for. :)Listed in: Ethnic Eats

Review from Erin P.
Went to Happy Sushi twice in one week: once for dinner and once for lunch, hoping to take advantage of the all you can eat option.
After looking at the menu the two I was with for dinner and I decided the AYCE option wasn't worth it - @ $23 per person it just didn't seem like much of a deal or savings. However for lunch it was more worth it @ $14 per person. We typically eat about $15 worth at lunch anyway, so the lunch option was more beneficial for us.
The dining room itself was clean and well decorated. Though when we were there for dinner it seemed some of the employees children were running amok from the kitchen/prep area to the dinning room. Service was good both times as well.
The sushi was decent. Not the best in Halifax, however. The seaweed wrappers seemed to be chewier than other places, not entirely sure why perhaps they're old? However, the miso was quite good, and the sushi overall was fine. If you're looking for great sushi in Halifax this likely isn't the place for you. But, if you are looking for good, quick, reasonably priced sushi, give Happy Sushi a try. (Green Dragon is a must-try!) -

Went to Happy Sushi for lunch with a big gaggle of my coworkers yesterday, and we were pretty impressed. Coming from Toronto, AYCE sushi is nothing new to me, but Happy Sushi had a selection of things available that was really quite good - more I think than I'd usually get at the place close to where I used to work.
Overall, the fish was was fresh and tasty. Chicken teriyaki was nice and peppery, and the beef while a little gristly was good too. It's AYCE so I don't expect the top-notch of everything I might expect at a more conventional sushi bar. We tried amongst us a very broad selection of their offerings and nothing was disappointing I don't think.
Service was cheerful and when they forgot one of the things ordered for one of our guests, they offered to pack it to go for her. Noteworthy.
As some warn, and you might not realize if you're new to the AYCE sushi experience, don't get overboard with your order. If you waste food they will charge you for it at the a la carte price. Far better to fill out an order slip for what you want, you can always order more if you feel like afterward. -

Great service at this little sushi spot. What can I say? Free parking, lots of tables, huge menu, friendly service, lots of choices for non-sushi eaters. We had a sushi rookie, a celiac, and a couple sushi pros and all were happy with the selection. All you can eat sushi at a fixed price is popular in other cities but it's the only one I can find in HRM. We will be back again soon!

It was OK. Nothing too special, except for the red dragon roll, which was delicious.
It was decent for an all you can eat sushi restaurant, I guess, but I've had better and fresher fish.
I'll probably eat there again because it is all you can eat sushi and this is the only one around the Halifax area.
The prices were very good. -

We are originally from Vancouver, home of all you can eat sushi yet this place tops it all. Fresh sushi, excellent service and ICE CREAM and DRINKS are included in A.y.c.e. It offer 2 wonderful flavors of ice cream and again it is a.y.c.e. Their salmon sashimi is out of this world. All other sushi places in Halifax are in trouble now.

I went during lunch it was $17 a person. If you pay cash, it's 10% of and if you pay with credit card, it's 5% off. But this isn't going to last forever.
They also charge you a 10% service fee, which confused me because is that considered a tip? In Japan you don't tip, so I just didn't tip and felt horrible about it.
KEEP IN MIND... what ever you don't eat... they will charge you full price for it on top of the buffet price.
The Sushi Pizza was good.
The Tempura wasn't very thick.
The Chicken had a little too much pepper on it.
The Teriyaki Fried Vegetable was just two florets of broccoli and the rest were bean sprouts.
The Salmon Belly was really good and so was the Eel. -

This is, as far as I know, Halifax's only "All you can eat" sushi restaurant. I went on a Saturday night, and it was $22 to order from that menu. The staff were very attentive and checked in often to see if we needed any more food, or a refill on our drinks.
Ordering was much like any dim sum restaurant where you'd mark a card with the quantity of each item that you want. Be careful not to order too much, as you'll get charged regular price for items left on your plate.
The food came out very quickly, and was about the same quality as you'd see at any other sushi place in Clayton Park. The food smelled and tasted fresh, and the unagi maki was fantastic.
One thing of note is that our server didn't tell us there was a 10% service charge on all A.Y.C.E. orders, so your $22 order is really $24.
All in all, I really enjoyed the food, and will definitely be back soon to try some more menu items. -
Review from Philip Y.
Happy Sushi is the first of its kind - a all you can eat buffet sushi place in Halifax.
The ambiance was good and there is ample of parking space nearby.
The waitress was pleasant although (for a weekday lunch), she had too much on her plate and wasn't able to manage the surge in the crowd.
Unlike some other sushi buffet, this doesn't have the conveyor belt system where sushis in plates would be placed on a conveyor belt and customers would simply sit along side it. And if they like, they simply take the plate of their choice - be it sushi or tempura etc. But for this restaurant, one has to tick on a sheet of paper and then submit it to the waiter. You'll have to finish all you have ordered first before you can ask for clean sheet of order form for round 2.
There's only 2 types of buffet set - a lunch type or a dinner type. Lunch doesn't have sashimi. The difference is roughly $8 between the 2. You could ask for the dinner set if even though came in during lunch hour. One more thing, go for the good stuff like the sashimi if you're taking the dinner set. I would try to avoid the roll as they tend to not stingy on the meat stuff for the roll - and give more rice than anything. The deep-fried onion was pretty pathetic and so was the deep fried squid. Although the tempura was OK. If all of these were satisfactory, I would have at least given it a 3 star. But if you're just happy taking any kind of sushi no matter what the quality is, then you'd be happy dining at Happy Sushi. As for us, we were only happy with the sashimi but felt that the price was too much given the overall quality of the food and the location (its not in downtown so I would say for that price, it was rather pricey). Oh another thing, if you pay by Credit card the total cost is slightly more. And the do have this weird service charge included, which was why I didn't consider tipping. -

Ate here for dinner on a Saturday night. Restaurant was about half full, but servers and chefs were able to keep a quick food pace. Food quality is excellent for all you can eat. Food selection is fair, but sashimi is limited to only a few selections. There are many maki choices. I would recommend the restaurant and will eat there again.

Nice place with cheap sushi! The best sushi in town, it's not! If you're not a big sushi snob, you're gonna like it....For $25 (tax and service included) you can have all you can eat sushi for dinner. Tea and dessert is also included.
