Review from Nancy W.
Beyond kimchi, there is KFC. I don't mean the stuff that Col. Sanders in Kentucky makes. I am talking about Korean Fried Chicken. Sure it's similar to Church's but KFC ( yangnyeom chikin) has a whole new meaning. You will most likely be consuming this with a group of friends, drinking soju and downing a few beers. You will most likely not be sitting at home alone with a 20 piece bucket, drinking grape juice and downing your sorrows in front of the tube. You will be served Korean side dishes aka banchan while listening to KPOP music playing in the background. You will not be eating fries drenched with powder mixed gravy.
KFC is amazing. I mean the fried chicken is seasoned and prepared in a way that the fat is removed from the skin. The result of that is a thin crust that is almost transparent. Crispy. Crunchy. Crackling.
Happy Day in Metrotown or as my friends and I like to call it Happy Chicken. This Korean restaurant is located between Nelson and Royal Oak on Kingways. We come here for happy hour. We come here for dinner. And we come here for late nights (open until 2am on some nights).
Chicken Tenderloins
Crispy and juicy chicken strips.
Half Spicy / Half Non-Spicy KFC
A mixture of dark meat and drumsticks. The spicy sauce gently coats the fried chicken. While it is initially sweet and mild to taste, it slowly generates heat in your mouth. The sauce reminds me a bit of buffalo wings, but the ginger, soy sauce and Korean chilli paste keeps the flavour unique. Of course, you can always ask them to add more heat to your sauce.
Padak
Padak is a unique KFC with small pieces of fresh spring green onions and mustard honey sauce. When you look at the gorgeous protein it definitely stimulates your appetite. Golden brown flaky breading. The taste is sweet yet slightly sour. Refreshing and something rare to encounter when you eat fried chicken. The spicy taste of spring onion and tangy mustard sauce reduces the greasiness of everyday KFC. If you've never had this amazing chicken, I strongly encourage you to lick your fingers to it and wash it down with a cold pint of beer.
Of course, Happy Day also serves your typical Korean staples such as JapChae (it's alright), SoonDooBoo Tofu Soup (the mushroom one is pretty good), and Seafood Pancake (typical, nothing special).
Come hungry. Come lots. Good food is best shared among friends! -

I love Happy Day. I come here for their fried chicken, which can only be described as amazing.
I always get the spicy fried chicken, a dish I find addictive once it hits the table.
As mentioned by others the service and the atmosphere is not noteworthy, however, enjoy the fried chicken and go home happy.
I have tried other dishes and they are reasonable.
One time I ordered 8 servings to go for a family get-together and they were more than helpful! -

Fried chicken fix without resorting to Church's! Crispy, peppery, steaming hot, fresh fried chicken.. definitely hits the spot if that's what you're craving.
It's not cheap, I think about $16 and you get 4 full legs - thighs & drumsticks.
You can get half spicy, half mild - or, you can get a full mild and get a side of the spicy sauce for an extra dollar. It's a rich, slightly sweet, smokey ketchup looking sauce that has quite a kick to it - so I recommend giving that a try before committing half your chicken plate to it!
They also have "nude" chicken on the menu - more provocative then it sounds, I believe it just means the chicken isn't fried :P
I like the Japchae here - nice, big portion size for $13. The beef was overcooked though. -

"Oh happy daaaay....oh happy daaaay!" It's a song, don't believe me, youtube it! It's a gospel song from the Sister Act 2 with Whoopi Goldberg.
This little Korean restaurant with its purple walls is awesome! They have some of the best fried chicken I've had in a long time. Whenever I get a craving for some fried chicken I think to come here first now, instead of KFC.
I'm so glad a friend introduced me to this place, otherwise I probably wouldn't have considered walking into this restaurant or let alone even noticing it.
On my last visit I tried Korean rice wine for the first time, and I love it! When it first came, me and my friends were like "hey, we didn't order any milk", because it looks exactly like milk! It has a very smooth and creamy taste to it, kinda fruity and slightly thicker than a white or red wine. They give you bowls instead of glasses to drink out of, which is awesome! We looked like cats drinking milk from bowls lol. I think I prefer having my beverages served in bowls instead of glasses or cups.

I started going here coz I tried Lee's chicken before at a potluck only to find out that it changed hands to Happy Day when I was craving for Lee's chicken again. As a huge fan of Korean food, I went in anyway.
I find that their food is good but not spectacular. Some dishes are great value but some are too expensive in general. BBQ isn't available at your own table but I don't care since I don't like to "burn it yourself" anyway and walk out smelling like a walking BBQ :P.
Few dishes worth mentioning are the BBQ short ribs. Yummy! Seriously, I love their chicken better than Lee's, KFC or Churches! You've got to try! Watch out though, their chilly sauce drenched chicken can be very very spicy but not to worry, you can ask for no hot sauce or mild -- just as good! Another thing I like is the yummy individual size pork bone stone pot soup. Finally! I don't have to order a huge $20+ soup for 4 people when there's only 2 of us and I'm craving for it!
Service wise-They totally have a huge staff turn over. The countless time that I was there, it's a new waitress each time (just so you know that the reason for my saying that their service is not bad isn't because the waitresses know that I'm a regular). However, I'd say their service is fair - although not as good as Western but a lot better than most Chinese places. I've never been disappointed in fact, I'm please that they at least speak sufficient English and all the items have English description.
The consistency in food and service, the value, and the signature dishes keeps me coming back. :)1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Christina P.
Quality of the food here is fairly consistent and good.
Food is reasonably priced, and their location is prime.
They are mainly good for dinner, or drinks with fried chicken.
It is nice to see Korean restaurants that don't have just the BBQ menus.
It is not the nicest place though... you go there for the food, but not the atmosphere. Also the service is kinda meh ...
Go there if you want good food at decent price. Go elsewhere if you are in mood to be treated & want to feel special -

* Continues to impress *
I've been back several times since my initial review. This spot continues to deliver a very high quality of food overall.
The Korean style fried chicken is amazingly good. They offer a "combo" where you get half with sauce and half without. If you are going with someone who is not a spice lover, the mixed combo is a perfect solution. The spicy sauce may be a bit hot for some. I found it delicious! The chicken itself was perfectly fried, crunchy on the outside, not overly greasy, and deliciously juicy on the inside. However you order it, the smallest plate is 8 pieces! Crazy!
The seafood jajangmyun is absolutely addictive. The noodles come in a separate bowl from the seafood black bean sauce. What an incredibly large portion! It is so unusual to get such a delicious dish served in such large quantity for such a reasonable price.
The black goat soup has an incredibly complex broth filled with lots of cabbage and very tender stewed black goat. They put a ton of toasted deulkkae (perilla seeds) which add a nice crunch and complexity to the broth. It is served in a hot stone bowl so that the soup is still hot as you are finishing off the bowl. (And it takes a while, since it is a very generous portion as well.)
My only complaint is that they give a small selection of banchan (about 4 usually - but fewer if you order certain items that are considered more snack/drinking food like the fried chicken). They do vary them quite a bit from time to time. On my most recent visit they had a marinated garlic shoot one that had the shoots still crunchy. It was delicious.
This is a great spot, and I thank Yoony P. for the tip on this one. It continues to impress.Listed in: Engrish, Vancouver multicultural fried…, Thanks, Yelp!, Vancouver Korean Food

Review from Yoony P.
Celery Kimchi , anyone?
I've had some interesting kimchis in my lifetime - once had placed dandilion leaf kimchi placed in front of me at toyo sushi, that was good--but last night was definitely a first. It was tangy and delicious. I think there was quite a bit of vinegar put into it, maybe that's what kept the crunchiness of it. It was crunchy and delicious!
We ordered:
Hweh Dup Bap (Korean version of Chirashi sushi)
As usual the portion of this dish is huge. There are lots of pieces of fish in it, sometimes the slices are still quasi frozen, but by the time you've mixed it all together with the warm rice it has usually thawed through. My husband loves getting this dish everytime we come here.
Bulgogi Dup Bap (Bulgogi on rice)
The portion of this was large as well. It came on an oval shaped platter/plate. There is really nothing to this dish, just korean marinated beef on rice. Simple and good.
Gamjatang (Pork bone soup)
You can order this dish as a jongol (large shared pot on hibachi) or singly in a ceramic bowl. I didnt try any of it, but it looked tasty and the person eating it had no complaints.
Jjambbong bap (Spicy seafood soup with rice, not noodles)
I ordered this dish. It wasn't as flavourful as the jjamppong at Choon Ha Choo Dong, it tasted more like spicey water with shredded veggies in it. It didnt' have a slight milkiness to the broth as really good jjambbong usually does. It was pretty average.
We asked for seconds of the side dishes--they were yummy! The sides we received were: Kimchi, celery kimchi, bean sprouts, potatoes i a sweet sauce, broccoli.
I really like this place but next time I'll order something other than the jjamppong.
