Review from Edward L.
Came here for their lunch special. Holy crap their food is cheap. A seafood soup noodle (small size) is only $8.50, and it can easily feed 2 people. And the soup is freaking GOOD, with huge chunks of squid and other goodies. This would easily cost $15 elsewhere.
Their Hainan chicken rice is also awesome. Done just right. This place has been around forever (at least since the 1980s) and now I totally understand why. It's pretty much an institution.
I really feel like I'm a better person after experiencing such goodness.Listed in: 2012 Ed's Picks, 2012 Cheap and Tasty

Review from Fritz S.
The food here is ok nothing too exciting., its the service that F$#kin sucks donkey D#%K!!!
"Fritz those are harsh words.. why would you say that??"
Oh i'll tell you!!!
One evening i had a craving for duck and my favorite place beside this damn restaurant was closed. :( so i had no choice but to come here.. err..Anyhoo, i placed my order and very politely said i wanted take out. well of course the two waitresses didn't hear me and they brought it out to me in a plate...
Fritz: "no im sorry i believe i said i wanted it to go please."
Lady: "noo you did not say that" (then she said something in her language)
Fritz: "could you please put it in a "to go" container?"
Lady: " (rudely says) Next time you speak up louder"
Then she says something in Chinese to her co worker and the both looked at me and laughed....
SERIOUSLY?!?!?!? WTF!!!
WOW ive never been treated that way before! If you seriously don't like your damn job, quit! i don't know if this old-ass lady was having a bad day, had a fight with her boss or husband, (if she even had one) if her kids ran away from home because of her... i can go on and on, but im going off topic.. but you should never treat your customers like that under any circumstances!!! l i vowed to never come here again.
Lord Jesus, what's the world coming to... SMH!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh P.S. your Roast Duck Roast SUCKS!!.... real talk! and im not just saying that because of your service!.. hardly any meat, just fat and skin...... K im done.. -

I can't say much about this place's decor - it definitely needs a nomination to the home decorating channel. Other than that, the food choices are decent and the prices that come with it are acceptable.
I first came here with a friend for some brunch. I ordered their ham and egg sandiwch with a hot, HK style milk tea. I know, I know, I know a ham and egg sandwich sounds so simple to make that why should I be paying someone to make it, right? But don't you find that sometimes when you eat it something made outside, it just tastes so much better than if you were to make it? Anyways, that aside, the ham and egg was made and tasted perfectly between the toasted bread. The milk tea tasted just as I remembered when I visited Hong Kong - it has that particular taste to it - can't explain.. you just need to try it!
I browsed the other menus (lunch and dinner) and they had some food that sounded really good and for a decent price too - I'll probably come back and try it out later.
The only downside to that day was when I found out I could have had the same thing at Aberdeen for only $3.95 vs. 5.50 at Happy Date! Regardless, my tummy was satisfied and happy. -

"Happy Family"...would be a better name. As mentioned by another it is not really a date place. The ambiance is for a casual Chinese family dinner. Which is what our relatives in YVR have enjoyed there for years.
They often get very busy so parking in the lot can be scarce.
I have been there more than a dozen times...the staff has always been attentive & friendly. Since they have low staff turnover & lots of business...I can only assume the dude complaining about the staff brought an attitude along.
What I especially like...we often buy live crab @ the market next door & have the restaurant prepare it. The prep fee depends on how you want it done. Most recently we had salt & pepper crab, braised tofu & broccoli, special house broiled chicken with sauce, & spring bean shoots in sauce. All were in generous portions & delicious.
Looking forward until next time... -

Visiting family in Vancouver and this is a frequent stop for afternoon tea or dinner. They have a pretty extensive menu, and their food is cheap and pretty good overall.
If you're looking for something from their bakery, their pineapple buns are excellent. Be sure to ask for some butter to go along with the sweet, hot bun that has a deliciously flaky top crust. The butter melts almost instantly, and you end up with a really good hot pastry to go with your milk tea.
For dinner, I'd recommend ordering the ox-tail stew. It hits the spot and goes great with steamed rice. -

Contrary to the name I don't know many dates that would be happy to be taken here. It's not exactly an impress someone Chinese restaurant.
What it is though is a Chinese comfort food spot. Come here for the congee and you won't be disappointed. Come here for some fancy shmancy courses and you definitely will.
Parking is a bit of a nightmare here, so save yourself the hassle and just spend the money on street parking. -

The lady at the front counter was very friendly when we came here to get some bakery goods. I suppose this place has the Hong Kong style bakery layout where you pick up a try & a clamper and select the goods yourself & bring it up to the counter to pay and have it get boxed. Alright selection of goods, but the lady was rather nice. We found out that the bakery accepts both Canadian & US $$. She was also planning a trip down to Washington/Oregon sometime soon.
This place is also a restaurant, and it seemed to be quite packed for an after lunch hour time of day. -

i have been a regular here for over a decade. usually don't sit and eat. when i am on the go, i grab some bakery and a hong kong style coffee.
the lunch specials are pretty good: you can get a main meal and a drink for around $6.00. i recommend you order a cold/iced drink. they run $3.00 just by itself...
