I've been here 4 times, but this time was awesome!! Food is always good and that's what keeps us coming back.  Service on the other hand can be up and down.  Most of the servers don't speak English, even with the call button they sometimes ignore it.  But on Saturday, which was a busy night we had a really good server who was funny and really helpful.
My friends and I (7 of  us) didnt really feel  like cooking our food so we ordered individual dishes.  We had dumpling soup, seafood pancake, Chap Chae, chicken, beef, short rib bulgogi, and bibimop. plus the free side dished (=  The food was so tasty, HOT, good portions!! Since we opted to order cooked food I think we ended up paying a little more than if we cooked it ourselves.  But I think it was worth it.
    Overall we loved it!!

I've been here a few time with colleagues, and there is nothing that excites me about this place, except for the corn tea. The prices are OK, the portions are nice, but the food lacks that spark. I normally go for the safer dishes, like prawn fried rice and seafood noodles with vegetable soup.
The place itself is clean and have plenty of seating. The service is quick, but we only go on lunch times on Fridays, so I can't say much about dinner time. Overall a decent space for a budget lunch.

Every couple of months, my friends and I have a reunion. We choose a place where we can stuff ourselves silly and poke fun at Dougie.

Since there are six of us, we decide to get the meal for four and some extra dishes on the side. This meal was epic... I was shocked at the amount of food we got and it was really reasonable. I always wear clothes that I want to wash right after these kinds of places... places where I have to cook my own food and sit in the steam and splatter of it. Let's begin.

Tea for everyone, but I don't really like tea at Korean restaurants. I don't know what kind of tea it is, but to me... close your eyes: imagine brown, recycled paper towels. Immerse them in water and wring them out into the teapot. That is what I think it tastes like... if I did that... which I haven't. I just don't like it. I order a coke and it's in a can... Yippee!

The food starts coming. We ask for lettuce because my friend said that we needed the lettuce for the grilled meat. I quite like it. I am a fan of steak lettuce wraps. I love food I can pick up with my hands. The meal came with some noodles... the clear kind that I was willing to fight my friends for... the meal also came with a seafood omelette. I am not a huge fan of seafood and eggs, but this is delicious. It comes on a hot sizzling plate. The bottom is all crunchy from the extra heat and it is good. We ordered a bimbimbap because we didn't know how much food was going to come with the meal. That was okay.

The meal comes with all the fabulous extras that you get with any meal at a Korean restaurant. We get some kimchi, some sweet and sticky potatoes, some sesame bean sprouts... so good.

The service here was great. We sat in one of the rooms and never felt rushed. The servers made sure we had everything we needed and stopped by regularly. We will probably come here again.

Ordered the Combo A for two and filled us up like crazy. Disappointed with the beef bone soup (too much white pepper) and the side dishes (not fresh enough?) but the BBQ part was excellent. The quality of the meat and the amount were perfect.

I have a long-term relationship with Hanwoori.  In fact, I can't think of any other place other than Guu that I occasionally return to, over and over.

For reasons you might not expect, this is one place that never falls out of mind, and let me tell you why. It's not because they have some unique dish, service gimmicks or amazing prices as one would suspect.  I've been visiting Hanwoori for close to 10 years and you know what?

....NOTHING has changed - and that's the best part!

It's solid Korean food, served by Koreans, never straying away from what they are good at - BBQ meats.  None of this "fusion" BS that is creeping up all over the city - "This is what we are good at, we aren't going to change!"

Seriously, it's like a giant kimchi-serving-time-capsule in here, I swear the staff look the same from 10 years ago and haven't aged a minute!  I jest, but you get the idea.

It's not cheap eats, it's not pricey, it's simply going to give you exactly what you expect, time and time again, no more, no less - and I'm quite OK with this.

Get the BBQ set menus, you won't be disapointed.

Nothing like soup and BBQ on a cold night.

We decided to eat at Hanwoori for my brother's birthday and they are still solid in food and service.  One thing I do love about eating is variety...and Korean food definitely has variety!

We ordered the Korean BBQ for 4 people, which came pork, beef, mushrooms, green onions, rice, oxtail soup and Jap Chae, which are clear noodles - it had meat and onions.  We also ordered the seafood pancake, a medium sake and 2 large Kirins.  It was more than enough food for the 5 of us and we were stuffed.    Oh and of course you get all the little extra side dishes as well - potatoes, bean sprouts, kimchi and pickled veggies.

The bill came up to $155 which is pretty decent for what you get!

    * Still going strong *

It has been a while since I visited Hanwoori, and I'm glad to report they are still putting out very good Korean food.

Today I had the gori gomtang (oxtail soup).  The broth was delicately flavoured - the way it can only be if they take their time to make it.  The oxtails were delicious.  The marrow hidden away inside and the meat surrounding the bones were phenomenal.  The juice inside of the bones was really richly flavoured as well.  Delicious!

I also got to try the samsun udon.  The broth had a pleasant pepperiness. There was a very generous amount of seafood with lots of variety.  The noodles were also freshly made, and cooked to the perfect consistency.  Nice dish.

One of the servers was a bit grumpy - perhaps because it was so busy.  Or because he had a bad day/week/month.  But the second server was friendly and efficient.

Anyway, still really like this place, and wonder why it had been so long since my last visit!

Review Two-Twelve, where the players dwell.  Got my hot Johnson on Johnson Tang (budae jjigae) action here.

Went for a rainy day lunch to Hanwoori.  Dragged around like Bourdain by his producer, Nari - my Korean friend suggested the budae jjigae (army base soup a.k.a. Johnson Tang) and mandu (fried dumplings).

I'm not sure how I spent so many years of my life without knowing there's a dish called "Johnson Tang" (Johnson soup) - apparently named due to the common American surname amongst the Korean War GIs.  Due to the meat scarcity, budae jjigae is basically spicy soup with veggies, instant ramen, rice cakes, and Spam.  I suppose this is a pretty close approximation of my 'if-I-was-a-dish' dish - without infusing tobacco, alcohol, coffee and more dead animals. (pausing to process what that would taste like... [shudders])

I really liked the mandu and enjoyed the budae jjigae, but I would have liked if the soup was spicier and more flavourful.  My friend agreed that it's usually heartier.  Oh well - still solid in my book.  There was about 8 plates of banchan and we got some dessert soup at the end as well.  Yay to the plethora of freebies.  Service was excellent as well.

Pretty solid Korean joint in Burnaby - just try not to imagine what else Johnson on Johnson Tang implies: http://www.youtube.com...

One of my friend who recommended this Korean restaurant for dinner.

They were so busy and long line up when we got there.  Lucky that we made the rsvn for 6 of us.

Most of the Korean dishes are served in huge portion and always good for a group to share.

Seafood, pork and tofu in spicy soup - It's spicy and tasty.
Spring onion and seafood pancake - It was good but tasteless.
Korean BBQ for 4 - Pork, Beef, Beef short ribs and mushroom marinated so flavorful.

The service still good even though they were super busy.  We got tea filled up quite often.

This is one of the best Korean restaurants outside of downtown Vancouver. According to a Korean friend, Hanwoori serves some pretty authentic food. My family and I went here on a weekend in the afternoon, around 4pm and the place was almost full. We ordered bulgogi, bibimbop, soup with rice cakes, jap chae, and the sweet and sour beef. Sorry, I don't quite remember the Korean names of all the dishes but these descriptions should be enough to match with the menu once you're there! The prices of these dishes ranged from about $8.95 - $10.95 each. Also, of note, none of these dishes were spicy and we were given hot sauce in case anyone wanted some extra heat. What I like best about Hanwoori is that they serve more side dishes than some places and they're pretty tasty too - just something to munch on while you're waiting or something to complement the ordered dishes.

All the dishes we ordered were delicious, especially the sweet and sour beef! We had to order the bibimbop with no egg since one family member is allergic to it and they were totally okay with that. In fact, they are fine with any such adjustments as long as you let them know before you order. On this visit, we were too lazy to cook anything ourselves but they do have the BBQ option, which is also just as good as ordering the cooked dishes. The bulgogi and sweet and sour beef came with rice and soup. There were five of us and all the dishes we ordered were just right and left us more than satisfied.

If you haven't been to Hanwoori before, it can be a bit tricky to find since it's located near Imperial and Kingsway but on the street just before the right turn onto Kingsway before the Visions store. Parking isn't too great either since it's next to an autobody shop and there are only about 4-5 stalls owned by the restaurant. Once those are full, there's street parking or, if the autobody shops are closed, use their stalls.

This is a Korean restaurant in Burnaby that serves a variety of Korean dishes with the possibility of barbqueing on the table.  Dishes came out to be on the greasy tasteless side and kimchi side dishes were no better than store bought. Half of the dishes came out to be lukewarm too when it should have been nice and hot.

Hanwoori Korean restaurant is located in an auto repair shop neighbourhood, so I found it strange to have a huge auto repair/oil change signs right inside the parking lot pointing to the locations. I think the owners of the restaurant should think twice how they should make extra money.  Not very classy!

How have I not been here before today? This is some of the best korean food you can get in Vancouver. The side dishes are very well-made and abundent. The soups are piping hot and flavorful. The booth tables are roomy and comfortable. The restaurant itself is very clean and has won several awards. At the end of the meal, they even give you shik-hae, a traditional sweet rice drink.. oh man, I haven't had that in quite a few years. It's official. I love this place.

the best korean spot in the world! if i can teleport from seattle to this place, i would order their #36, which was chicken fried balls with garlic. SO GOOD! we ordered their combination B or C every visit, which we never were able to finish and their korean bbq is still god-like. the marinated meat puts all the seattle's korean bbq out of business. the side dishes were good, corn tea yum, great service.. like which korean place replaces their cooking plates? well none in seattle. well if you're visiting, definitely go down this place, i've never been disappointed and i've had a lot of great meals and a good time. thanks young's family for owning the best korean bbq restaurant, please branch off to seattle!

By far my favorite restaurant ever. Every time I come to BC I ALWAYS eat here. The dishes are enormous and we always have tasty left overs to take home. Their Korean BBQ is so good and they give plenty of sides. It's a bit on the pricey side but it's well worth the money. It's a good thing this place isn't in Seattle or else I would be broke!
