Fantastic customer service even before I became their customer!

I came to the shop one random morning (I didn't even call!) to ask about this loud whine that was coming from the engine bay. When I walked up to the front desk, Hank was there to assist me. I briefly explained to him the situation and *BAM*! Just like that, he runs over to his tool box and came back running to my car with a stethoscope. Even though he clearly had a lot on his plate (he had approx 15 cars lined up!), he still took the time to help me out.

If you want someone considerate, knowledgable, and honest to work on your car, Hank is your guy.

Wanted a 2nd opinion on what was originally diagnosed as a power steering fluid leak and really glad I decided to take my 2004 Pontiac Vibe (aka Toyota Matrix) to Hank Auto Repair.  Especially after a colleague had a good experience with a brake job, and reading all of the positive reviews here on Yelp.  The problem ended up being an oil leak due to a degraded o-ring on the timing chain tensioner, something I discovered is common on Toyota/GM cars with this engine design like the Vibe, Matrix, and Corolla.

Hank is the real deal, a genuine and honest auto mechanic who knows his cars and the importance of customer service.  Hank always answers his phone.  I called him multiple times this week to discuss the problem, confirm my initial appointment for an inspection, and then confirm he got the part for the actual repair.  I didn't have to wait long during both visits, and learned a lot from him in just a short period.  Yesterday, he hoisted my Vibe on a lift and walked me under the car to show where the actual leak was happening.  He told me he could change the o-ring for $80, and I agreed to come back today.  This morning, he informed me that he had to order the entire timing chain tensioner component because most auto part suppliers don't sell just the o-ring.  I had no choice and just wanted to get this fixed.  About 1/2 hour later, he said my car was done and the total bill came to $85.  I was on my way and got to work by 9:00-9:30AM both days.  Talk about great service!  Hank's is small business of 2-3 mechanics and a little bit inconvenient to get to, but I will want to visit him from now on when my oil changing shop finds problems with the engine or drive traiin or anything under my Vibe or my wife's Integra.

They gave really good service for my car. Replaced the hoses. Changed coolant. Made my car go smoother than usual. Changed the rear light . Explained me what was wrong w my car. Told me that there was no need to change air filter since it was not necessary. All in all they charged 430 incl parts and labor.

Very good service and at affordable price.

    Would recommend this place .

And the best part it opens at 8 in the morning till 6 pm.

My Taurus had a coolant leak that suddenly went from mild to catastrophic. I called Hank and he said to bring it in the next day, since they were a little busy. I took it in the next day and Hank told me they would do a pressure test and call me back. Two hours later, I was told that my timing cover gasket was blown and responsible for the leak.

Hank quoted me a fair price over the phone, I gave the ok and he had the part ordered. Two days later, my car was ready for pickup. Hank replaced the gasket, pressure tested again to make sure there were no more leaks, and did an oil change due to possible coolant-oil contamination. During the repair he noticed that my water pump wasn't looking so good, so he replaced it for free! Who does that?? He could have easily called me and added its cost to the invoice, but he smiled, shrugged and said, "It's not that expensive".

Well I know where I'll be getting my automotive repairs done from now on.

A Jeep dealership and an independent mechanic shop was going to charge me $400 (not including parts) to correct an electrical short in the dash, replace a worn turn indicator and replace an automatic door relay. Hank fixed everything and charged me $270 (including parts) and actually found the short in the passenger door. He would've easily taken me for the $400 because it seemed that was the going price to do the work. He told me that the majority his bill was because of the parts and it was only about 1.5 hours of labor.  I'll definitely be coming back here for any car issues.

There are no second thoughts about coming back to Hank in case I would need some auto repair done.

    Let's see.

I found Hank out of a load of frustration from Dannick's Auto Repair (don't go there unless you want the car problem to keep happening). My then VW Beetle was having issues with the headlights. After about 3-4 visits to Dannick's I decided it's profoundly stupid to bring my car there again. They obviously couldn't fix the problem.

Onwards to Yelp search. Hank Auto Repair appeared to be very close to where I live. I called immediately and spoke to Hank. I asked him if I can bring the car in today and indeed, he took my car right away.

This Vietnamese-American dude plays no tricks. He gets to the problem right away, no BS, no sweet talking. My left headlight was fixed after an hour (I waited for it). He then explained to me what was wrong and why the previous guys weren't able to fix the issue. I think I paid him $25 or so. Hank is your typical dedicated hard-worker who also likes what he does.

After a year or so, my car's right headlight had the same problem. I call before I bring it in and right on the dot - it was probably 9 in the morning when I brought the car in and he worked on it right away. Happy with the service as usual! My car's problem may have been simple (I'm glad) but I am sure glad I didn't go anywhere else.

For sure, I am highly recommending this auto repair shop. Hank does the job right and does it perfectly!

First experience with Hank was regarding replacement of my timing belt. He told me to come back after another 5K miles b/c my car isn't ready for it yet.  I told him that my dealer said I'm overdue and kept pushing me to had it done in the dealer's shop for an arm-and-a-leg.  He laughed, told me to go home, and in 3 months, I was back in his shop.  He did the work for half the price of the dealer and everything was great.

Second visit to Hank was to replace the crappy stock motor/belt for my driver-side windows.  I didn't even bother with any other shop, and went directly to Hank for his advice/service.  He charged me a reasonable amount and I was satisfied.

Third visit to hank was for the passenger side window (same issue with the belt/motor.  ONLY 2 WEEKS after the driver-side window was repaired....This was apparently a common issue with a lot of Honda Accords.  Got it fixed for the same price as the driver side and I was on my merry way.

If you want a no-pressure, self-employed professional mechanic working on your car. He's the man.

Had a fantastic experience here. I screwed up my car in a special way after I installed an aftermarket sway bar and the endlinks ripped off the frame since I didn't install the reinforcement brackets. Skipping my mod jargon, Hank welded things back together and charged only $100 for it. It would have been skyward at the stealership. It was done in an hour and half, and that was only because they had to service the cars that came before me. The shop is a bit of a mess and the parking lot is a maze but they get things done.

My car kept overheating, and after trying to ignore it (and having several prolonged waits in my car) I searched Yelp for someplace to take my car.

I dropped it off at 3:00, and it was finished at 5:30 the next day - pretty fast for the number of cars they seemed to have in the lot. Hank called me in the afternoon to tell me what the problem was, and fully explained what needed to be fixed and what the itemized costs would be. I felt really comfortable asking him questions, and felt like he was really fair with the price.

I will certainly be taking my car back if I have any more troubles -- which hopefully won't happen anytime soon!

My car had experienced trouble on the way to work one morning - which I had thought was engine related. I called up Hank Auto Repair upon searching Yelp for something close to me and highly-rated. They took me in immediately and called me back within an hour or two.

It turned out that I needed a new sensor and for the computer to be reprogrammed by the dealership, since they weren't able to make those repairs and that I may be able to get it done for free by them, if it is covered under warranty. The nicest part was that Hank Auto Repair didn't charge me a dime for this, since they didn't actually make any repairs. I really appreciate their integrity and this simple gesture won me over. Looks like I'll be using them for any auto repair needs this point on.

If you want a very knowledgeable, trustworthy mechanic, Hank is your guy.
I've been to 2 other auto mechanics but their diagnosis of my car's problems were inaccurate. He had saved me hundreds of dollars in repair bills, fixed my transmission issues instead of replacing it.

Hank is honest, knows his craft well, charges fairly.
He goes out of his way to provide excellent customer service.
He has definitely earned my trust & respect. .

Hank runs an honest, hard-working repair shop.  I have used Hank to maintain my Subaru Legacy and my wife's Mitsubishi Montero for the last 5 years.  Both cars are over 10 years old, and Hank has done a great job to keep them running well.  The most amazing thing about Hank is that he gives free tips and advice over the phone--on three separate occasions after speaking with Hank on the phone, I have been able to fix the issue quickly by myself without additional time and expense for repair.  Furthermore, when I do need to take a car in for repair/maintenance Hank does the work well and fast and I have never been shocked by the cost.

I called Hank on a Wednesday night. My clutch had burnt out and I needed it replaced immediately. Hank answered the phone, and I told him my issue. He said he'd give me a call back in 10 minutes and did with an estimate. The $700 was $300 cheaper than the other two quotes I received from reputable auto-mechanics rated on Yelp.

He also told me I could bring it into the shop in the morning, which everyone else said about a week.

I'm very pleased so far with his service, price and honesty. He also told me my back brakes didn't need to be fixed, after I asked him. I wasn't sure because a previous mechanic told me they were in dire need of fixing and wanted to replace them for $600.

    Thanks Hank, you are awesome!

I have been to Hanks multiple times. I recently had a blowup of the coolant system. Got the car towed to Hanks. He was very helpful and given the amount of work, gave a discount on the labor. I took the car a few days later because the check engine light came on. It was unrelated to the coolant system, he fixed it anyway - no charge.
Very friendly, honest and good work. He tends to not call you when the car's ready etc, you have to call him but I think that's a minor annoyance.

I went to see Hank for 2 issues.  The first being a cracked radiator and the second was for my Climate Control (strange sound coming thru and 70 degrees felt like 95 degrees).  Hank was able to identify the causes right away by doing a little detective work under the hood and/or in the glove compartment.  It was a pretty quick same day turnaround for each and he was able to explain to me in detail what the cause was.  When speaking with him, you just get the feeling that you're talking to an honest guy that'll tell you exactly what you need and exactly what the price will be.  I'll definitely be back.

Hank is the Tebow of car repairs. He will give you a quality assessment of your car problem(s). And on the spot, he will tell you if he can or can not perform the job. I have been taking my four cars to Hank's for any services because he is dependable and honest. I have recommended him to my friends and relatives and the feedback is always POSITIVE! Amazing!

I've always had really bad luck with mechanics. Since I don't know much about cars in general i always end up getting charged an arm and a leg. My 2000 ford focus had been sitting idle in our parking space for months. I was on the verge of selling because i was afraid of how much it was going to cost to get it fixed up. I found Hank on yelp and took the car in-  he got everything fixed up for easily 1/3rd of what I had been quoted by the mechanic where we used to live- and this was before it had been sitting idle for half a year. He and his staff were very friendly and professional- i no longer fear having to take my car into the mechanics. Needless to say I'll be returning to him with any automotive issues I have.

Hank is awesome! I had my wife's 4Runner towed to Hank Auto Repair after reading good reviews and because it is very close to our home. The main crankshaft pulley had broken and the price of the part alone from the dealer cost over $600. Ouch!

Hank located a used pulley from a junk yard and installed the part for under $300. I was blown away. That was over 2 years ago and the car runs great.

I am now a regular customer and bring my Civic to him for all maintenance and repairs. He has consistently delivered exceptional service at fair and reasonable prices. Simply put, Hank is the man!

The last time I was there was earlier this year when my water pump exploded on the freeway. I was worried that the engine block had cracked. I had my car towed to Hank's where he replaced all of the belts (including timing belt, which was overdue anyway), water pump, oil change and flushed the system in less than a day. All for a very reasonable price. My car hasn't had a problem since.

Since my first review I've recommended Hank to my cheapskate co-workers (you know who you are) who despite shopping around almost always end up at Hank's. Even if he wasn't the cheapest (though he usually is) I would still take my car there because he's honest and gets the job done quickly. You don't have to worry about getting a low estimate and then a phone call hours later saying it's actually going to cost twice as much.

    A really good mechanic.

I actually know a lot about cars but am short on time these days. My teenage daughter need help with her beater and Hank was totally on top of it. Without knowing that I knew exactly what was wrong with the vehicle he totally nailed it and diagnosed everything correctly.

As someone else posted, he's not Jesus Christ or anything but he is an honest and professional mechanic.

Apparently he works weekends as well. Pretty rare.

Hank is good and honest.  I highly recommend him for service work on your car.

A little story.  The first time I went to him was to check on a possible electrical problem.  He couldn't locate the trouble.  When I asked him how much I owed for his time looking into the issue, he said not to worry about it since he couldn't locate the problem.  Later, I figured out the problem was actually an intermittent issue with the radio.  I've gone back to him ever since.  No guarantee that you'd get that response if he can't find your car's problem, of course.

He's always been good and honest.  His rates are quite reasonable.  He was first highly recommended to me by a friend who maintains four cars.  I've been recommending him ever since.

Hank Auto is awesome and deserves all the praise it can get.
Based on other yelpers, I cautiously gave hank a try with my ford pickup.
He did a tune-up, oil change, brake work, etc...
He quoted me a very fair price and actually came in under cost.

Later I had some transmission trouble, I brought my truck to him and he told me it was a bad sensor and the oil leak was from overheating.
He could have told me I my tranny would need to be rebuilt, but he told me the truth. A cheap fix and I was on my way.

Hank and his second in command Nguyen are awesome.
I live just around the corner from Hank auto so I 'm happy I have a trustworthy and capable mechanic in my backyard.

So I have gone thru multiple mechanics with the many used cars over the years - Hank is an honest mechanic; as honest as they come. He does not do any unnecessary repairs and in fact has turned me away from repair cost
such as when my car needed to be jumped one night when I clearly had not left lights on to warrent the dead battery - my fear was it would be a costly electrical issue - to my pleasant surprise - Hank sent me down the road to get a new battery - that was the problem :)

    HIGHLY Recommend this mechanic !!!!!!!!!

02 VW's battery wouldn't stay charged.  I checked for shorts and battery condition but couldn't come up with anything that made sense.  Took the ride to Hank and he was able to isolate the problem to the faulty alternator within a day.

So why 3 stars only... labor was fair or even at the low end (I had no idea how long it took to fix) but the part was not.  Alternator from Kragen, Autozone and Pepboys were running about $190 with core return, Hank charged me $290, 48% mark up.

    Will I go back, maybe...

I just moved to Sunnyvale from NJ and had my Jeep Liberty sent by truck. On arrival I took to the dealership for a checkup. The car was actually making some noise for a while. Anyway, they said a repair was needed on the rear differential and wanted to charge more than 1,200 for the fix. I took the car to Hank (after seeing all the reviews over here) and I have no regrets, the service was way cheaper, he is indeed very friendly and the car is running great. Thank you Hank!

This is my first review on Yelp and probably the second on the internet for that sake. I am not the guy who goes around writing reviews. Reason, I don't have that time and I am too lazy for it. So, why am I writing this ? Because Hank saved me $3000 which is the value of the car that I am driving.

Part 1 (not at Hank): This happened 3 - 4 weeks ago. One fine morning my old Nissan Sentra didn't start. Not having much patience or time to sit with it I had it towed to my regular mechanic who is located on El Camino Real. I was a regular customer with him for so many months and I put all my trust in him. When I got there he didn't seem to show any about me waiting there. He sees me and then walks away to another client who came in after me. I thought he might be having a busy day. So I waiting like 20 minutes and finally and he decides to talk to me. Says that he is really busy with so many cars and he will see what he can do. (Recently he expanded his shop and grown into a big business). He calls me the next day evening and says my car is no good. The engine is not putting up enough pressure and engine needs to be replaced. This is a old car and replacing the engine is not a viable solution. Then he says "donate the car to me. I will fix it and use it for my customers". He repeated it so many times that I got suspicious.

I trusted him so much that I was about to give it away to him. But I felt something is not right in the way he treated me and spoke over the phone. So, the next day I towed it away from him.

Part 2 (at Hank): After reading reviews I didnt know whom to trust and whom not. So I called up Hank to give it a shot. He told me that he is familiar with the engines of Nissan. Towed it to his workshop which was not as big as my previous mechanic's but Hank seemed to be a very honest man. He told me that he will do the checkup for free. So I left the car there.

Part 3 (at Hank): Next day Hank calls me and says my car is fixed and can come and pick it up. I went to pick it up next day (it was saturday afternoon). He told that there was nothing wrong with the car. There was a check engine light and it could be because of the previous mechanic didn't fix something back while working on it. He  didn't want to charge me anything because he felt there was nothing to fix and the car was still in a good shape. He advised me to drive around for a week or two and bring it back if there was still a problem.

I was really astonished at his honesty. He could have conned me into a real situation given my ignorance about the workings of a car engine (I really feel bad that I don't know much). So I thank him and ask what can I do in return and he tells me, "tell your friends about it" and walks away to work on the other cars.

I am not trying to say that he is Jesus Christ or anything. But this is the least I can do to him in return for saving my car...I am taking it back to him for a tune up.

I only wish I could give Hank 10 stars. He's been keeping my car going for more than 10 years, and I have never had anything less than a great experience in all my visits, whether it's a major fix or routine maintenance. Hank is honest and provides excellent work at prices lower than the market. He doesn't take advantage of his customers. He's like a "car whisperer," because although he uses the standard diagnostic equipment, he knows cars so well that he can usually tell what the problem is before running the tests to confirm it. He will also tell you if a car problem requires immediate repair or you have some time before you have to fix it, very helpful in this economy. Hank hires good mechanics and oversees everything. Nguyen has also worked on my car, and his work is excellent, too. If you get there when the shop opens there's a good chance that you'll get an estimate quickly.

Hank is great. I took my old Chevy truck in because it was running rough. Nobody wanted to work on it. Hank looked at it, figured out the issues and corrected them. The truck runs great again and the price was very reasonable. His shop is very busy but if you talk with him, he will schedule you in. He's honest and I would recommend him to anyone needing a good mechanic.

Hank is an honest mechanic.  I took my car here to have my stuts replaced and my breaks checked. He told me that I still had some life in the breaks and they didn't need to be replaced.  I had gotten for the struts from 2 other places, but Hank came in $300 cheaper.  He was able to do all the work in one day. He finished my car within one day.  When I went to pick it up, I appreciated that time that he took to show me the work he had done to the car.

Very nice guy.  I highly recommend this place.

An honest mechanic.  We took in our new-to-us used car after the check engine light came on.  He hooked it up to a diagnostic machine, told us it was probably the gas cap wasn't screwed on tight enough, reset it for us and sent us smiling and on our way, not charging us a cent.  Thanks Hank!

Last week I took the truck in again, intending to get the clutch replaced.  120K on the original clutch, so I figured it was time.  After looking over/testing the vehicle, Hank informed me the clutch still had good life left in it, and wasn't close to slipping.  So instead of a $1K repair bill, he changed the oil and filter and charged me $30.

Needless to say, I was impressed.  I can't imagine the Ford dealership forgoing a thousand dollar payday.  More likely, they'd pressure me to buy even more unneeded services.

Hank's the only place I'll take our vehicles for service.

I have been going to Hank for all our cars for years.  Hank is a great mechanic: honest, quick and thorough.  I highly recommend him to anyone (I recommended him to my boss).  His service is unmatched, and price is the best.

    Honest Hank,

I've taken a number of cars to Hank over the last 8 years and referred a handful of people.  He's fast and reliable, I've never been turned down and asked to make an appointment on another day.  I've never had a repair that took more than 6 hours.

The work is priced fairly and is always turned around quickly.

For example, one shop in SF quoted a friend $900 for a 60,000 mile maintenance.  They tried to fit every repair imaginable into the quote: new brakes, resurfaced rotors, new accessory belt, two new tires (seriously?).  Took it to Honest Hank and he took care of all of those repairs (minus the tires.  if a repair shop tries to sell you a pair of tires go get your car and get as far away from them as possible), for a fraction of the price.

Mechanics you can trust are rare, but Hank is trustworthy.
