Review from Dan P.

If you are looking for a new stylist or want to try someone new, you have to see Mel at Hands on Experience. I have followed Mel for over 7 years and I consider myself quite picky when it comes to picking a stylist. Mel is probably the best stylist I have had and it has been a pleasure for me to be her client.
Mel possess good style and her technique is solid. One thing that sets Mel apart from the rest is that she really knows how to style/cut Asian hair. As funny as that sounds, Asian hair is generally thick but Mel is probably the best in town if you have hair like mine.
The salon itself is very relaxed and laid back. Good location, just a few minutes away from Skytrain.
Thumbs up. -

I took some advice by Dan P. and went with Mel at this salon and she was really great. The shop is so low key and casual. Really relaxed.

I am also a big fan of Terry at Hands on Experience. This is the third salon I've followed Terry to, and I have good reasons.
She is a very skillful stylist who listens well to what you want and gives a great cut that is designed just for you --your face, your style, your personality. Also, Terry is a great person to spend an hour with when you need your hair styled.
The location off the street is very relaxing, and full of friendly practitioners. Reasonable prices. -

I have known Terry, my hair stylist at Hands On for over 5 years. I've followed her from salon to salon as she searched for the place that worked best for her professionally. I think I'm almost as glad as she is to have settled at Hands On.
It's a small, unassuming place, up a dark narrow stairway that opens into a bright, sunny (when it's not raining) space that's open and welcoming. There are 4 hair stations and a room for Mira, the fabulous aesthetician.
The salon bills itself a "personal care collective," which gives you an idea of the collegial nature of the staff relationships and the philosophy of equality and flexibility. I'm only in there one afternoon about every 2-3 months, but I can imagine that it's a really pleasant place to go to work every day. They also have a policy of keeping the phone off, so that they never get interrupted when they're in the middle of a haircut, but they're very conscientious about checking their messages and returning phone calls.
Terry is a terrific stylist, and I've often seen Mira for eyebrow waxing. She's a great aesthetician as well, and it's usually possible for me to schedule a wax appointment in conjunction with my haircut. That pretty much takes care of my aesthetic needs, so it's very handy for a busy gal like me!
